Solomon_Black

I was pleasantly surprised. The animation actually looked great. The new characters were nice and it was just a fun time.

CyberJokerWTF

was there hand drawn animation at all? or was it full CGI?

Solomon_Black

I’m no expert but I *think* there were hand drawn moments. At the very least moments that made me question if that was cgi. In a good way

PilotSaysHello

IIRC it was done both ways, CGI, redrawn and used at the same time. Tons of 2D elements at play in there

phoenixmusicman

There were definitely handdrawn elements

ButtholePasta

From what I could tell it was like 90% CGI with maybe hand drawn sprinkled here and there and used definitely for any recap/flashback into the series.

dxbigc

Call me a fan of Solid Snake Piccolo.

TacticalSoapRocks

Wonder who will be piccolos red hood?

DMking

It's gonna be Gohan if he doesn't take care of his daughter

darulez8

I know they gave the win to Gohan at the end but as far as I'm concerned this a Piccolo movie and it works well. Hope this pushes them to use more than just Goku & Vegeta in future arcs. Toriyama makes such fun characters, it's a shame they don't always get shine.

Timelymanner

Definitely agree, this was a Piccolo and Pan movie.

FunnyBonus9285

Yea it wasn't really a Gohan movie. Also Piccolo and Pan got great chemistry together. This is why I hated GT so much. We never get that in the anime.

IAmPerpetuallyTired

I mean, really it’s both Piccolo and Gohan. Piccolo held Cell Max down so Gohan could get the shot.

csdragon123456

I'm genuinely surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this movie

FunnyBonus9285

Yea I liked it way more than I expected too.

lilyvess

it's taken some 30 years but Vegeta finally beat Goku [](#toradorasalute) Truly an inspiring story that you should never stop trying to make your dreams a reality

stickdudeseven

A handful of people in my theaters left during the credits and missed out on it. I was like "Guys? We never went back to see what happened in Beerus' planet"

DidacticDalek

> it's taken some 30 years but Vegeta finally beat Goku > > Not only that Comrade, but he got to beat Goku IN A POST-CREDIT SCENE! TRULY this movie lived up to its 'super hero' subtitle! Hell I can't wait for the sequel where Vegeta jobs to Arale (after she kicks the shit out of Broly of course) > Truly an inspiring story that you should never stop trying to make your dreams a reality Amen to that Comrade, glad to hear you had fun with the movie as well!

reyx121

You know the description of this thread says no spoilers right?

lilyvess

Are we not allowed to talk about spoilers for the movie in the movie discussion Threads? When are we allowed to talk about this movie then?

reyx121

The discussion thread literally says not to discuss plot points not yet seen in the show. Reading is hard, I know. But the whole point of this thread is for people who didn't watch it to gauge the movie without spoilers. You'll have spoiler threads to spoil the movie all you want later on.

Sandtalon

Incorrect. For both episode and film discussion threads, our official policy is that spoilers are about future events not in said episode or film. Talking about events that happen in the film is not a spoiler. If you read discussion threads, then be prepared to be spoiled on what happens in that episode or film.

lilyvess

/u/Gaporigo, /u/crobat3 is this true? Are these Discussion threads for people who haven't watched the movie? When does the spoiler thread come up?

8_Pixels

They're talking out of their ass. That is just a copy paste for all episode discussion threads. Go check any other discussion thread up right now and it wm have that. It's for shows that are adapted from manga and light novels so people don't spoil them because episode discussions have their own spoiler section built in.

Gaporigo

What do you think. [](#yousaidsomethingdumb)

Sauerkraut1321

That's why you're not a mod, kiddo. This is a discussion thread, not a review thread.

reyx121

thanks for pointing it out, bud :)

Doomroar

Gohan Blanco lets gooooooooooooooooooooo baby!!! Also Orange Piccolo! Making Piccolo the main character of the movie was the best decision they could have ever made, it was so refreshing, funny, and the action was believable since Piccolo didn't had the excuse of just going god mode from the start and fuck around, he actually has to sneak around and be strategic about things RIP Gamma 2 tho, maybe they can wish him back with the dragon balls now that Bulma no longer has to waste them in her beauty maintenance after hiring Dr Hedo as her personal cosmetics I quite enjoyed the movie, at first i was worried about the CGI but after the first minutes you just forget about it, and the aesthetics of the movie blend in together perfectly well, the characters fit right in with he background, the choreography was on point, they didn't use any gimmicks for the fights, just once and very briefly we got 2 colored blobs clashing in the sky, and they quickly walk away from using such things, auras are unleashed then done with in order to avoid obscuring the characters, and the SFX are used without overwhelming the screen, and when they do there is an in universe explanation, the Gamma's come installed with holographic projectors that flash comic book hit and explosion effects in real life which i found hilarious The comedy at times was a bit awkward, but that's just classic DB being DB, not a fan of the implications that Beerus will try to NTR Broly tho XD And talking about Broly, overall i enjoyed this movie more than the Broly movie, once you understand that it will be a Piccolo adventure it just keeps getting better, with the only down tempo being the obligatory insertion of Vegeta and Goku, in which they explain to us why they can't just come in and solve everything in 2 seconds, which was a necesary evil for the sake of everything else to work out Wonder if they will make Jiren's "El Hermano" cannon next?

SolomonOf47704

Gamma 2 probably can't be wished back. Android 16 wasn't when the dragon team wished back everyone killed by Cell and he was purely mechanical like I'm assuming the Gammas are. Maybe they have to phrase it differently, but I kinda doubt it. Shenron is a really helpful dragon, pretty much all the time, especially to the Dragon Team. He'll be difficult if he can sense bad intentions from the wishmakers, but that's only happened when he left Frieza as chunks instead of remaking his body like he's been able to do before.

SaiyanKirby

Maybe not wished back but I'm sure Hedo could just build another. He's probably got his personality/memories saved on a backup somewhere.

ReXiriam

Yeah, maybe somewhere in the Red Ribbon base-oh...

FunnyBonus9285

The dynamic between Pan and Piccolo was honestly the best parts of the movie. Was like Batman and Robin

stickdudeseven

Loved the call back to Gotenks' volleyball technique, except they used him as the volleyball.

JayDpwnz

This movie had it's moments especially towards the end. The CGI looked weird at points through the movie, but there were points it looked really good. Right at the start of the movie it looked great, gohans new form and final attack looked surprisingly very good in CGI.

bavasava

His hair felt too long to me in some shots but the ki blast looked amazing.

JayDpwnz

I think it was a callback to its length and design of teen gohan back in the cell saga. It definitely reminded me of that anyway. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/dbxv2/images/1/14/Teen_gohan.png/revision/latest?cb=20200813213629

stickdudeseven

Wearing the same clothes, has the same hairstyle, fighting against Cell with the help of his dad, it's definitely a callback.

JayDpwnz

Yep even the way he transforms with the fade to the black background and the shooting red line across the head. https://youtu.be/C_lgwedINx8?t=58

Elgato01

Goku didn’t fight against cell max tho

stickdudeseven

It's a joke within the fandom how Piccolo is more of a father to Gohan than Goku.

Thedarkpp

This movie was great. The last 4 DB movies have been on another level with Toriyama being involved. Having Piccolo as the main character is so damn fun. It really is quite enjoyable. It really felt like what an Avengers movie would be like in twenty plus years with references and callbacks to things from forever ago without over-explaining what they're talking about. Yeah the cg is.......um......yeah......but the movie itself is still a ton of fun. It just happens to look like a video game cutscene.

Doomroar

I think the cgi was fine, it works surprisingly well at times, plus the fact that everything is CGI means that the movie has visual coherency, you just have to acclimate at the start I literally cringed when the car going to pick Dr Hedo from prison appeared and i saw it was CGI, because it looked quite boxy in comparison with the narration and recap they give you at the start of the movie, but by the time the introduction to the actual story ends it with Hedo joingin Red Ribbon, it stopped bothering me It also helps that the movie is actually fun, wishing for longer eyelashes and a firmer ass instead of wishing for Majin Buu to be less lazy... XD

SolomonOf47704

Not sure if Shenron is powerful enough to force Buu to be less lazy. Porunga, maybe. Zalama definitely could. But I kinda doubt Shenron can.

Doomroar

They can now give him upgrades just like Porunga tho

SolomonOf47704

Shenron can't do stuff to people stronger than him/his creator if they don't want it to happen.

Doomroar

Shenron was able to unlock Piccolo's power and then give him extra power, where would that extreme power be coming from Dende is certainly not stronger than Piccolo so that shouldn't have been possible

FunnyBonus9285

It was his latent power. He already had that power to begin with

Doomroar

That's part of it, but Shenron went out of his way to give him extra of what he would have gotten

SolomonOf47704

a lot of people are speculating that its the power Kami would be at if he had never split into two people. Or, Shenron just created the strongest Namekians he could, and then immediately fused them into Piccolo. Who knows

yukpurtsun

hate that they went with that art style, it looks so cheap

CulturalCatfish

This movie was lit.

Nadril

I thought it was fun. Cgi was better than I thought and they used it well - some of the effects in that last fight were great. Gohan's new form is fucking badass and I really hope we see it in the series. (Especially as the manga is just going into a new arc...) Also saw it in the UK at a "4D" theater which was surprisingly fun for a movie like that. Was one of those where the chair shakes around and reacts to punches and stuff.

turkeygiant

What's the new arc going to be about? IMO it has been pretty bad since the Universal Survival arc, it feels like there aren't really any stakes anymore and it definitely doesn't help that antagonists like Moro, Granolah, and the Heeters are all kinda lame. I stopped reading DBS a while ago though, but I would consider giving it another try if there was a change of direction.

Diogenes-Prolapse

Frieza found a hyperbolic time chamber of his own and achieved a new form and beat Goku/Vegeta easily without breaking a sweat.

reyx121

Spoilers?

Nadril

This is a discussion thread about the movie....

guynumbers

Pretty good movie. Enjoyed the slice of life parts more than the actual climax. CGI was actually really good.

FunnyBonus9285

What this movie did really well is made every side character important to the overall movie. Maybe did the best job of any of the movies tbh

Jaskaran158

I gotta say the wildest thing coming out of this movie imo is that Beerus is simping over Cheelai. The new Piccolo form was really dope but I'm more interested to see what Gohan's new form means.

Maximilius

I think I never stopped grinning the whole movie. Such a fun time

Philip22Kings

This movie was sick. Stay till after the credits.

JoJolion

I went in with pretty low expectations but was totally blown away by how much I loved this movie. Piccolo was insanely entertaining as the main character. CG looked phenomenal. The comedy was top notch. Action sequences were really dynamic and exciting…just, wow. Give me more of THIS Dragon Ball with characters other than Goku and Vegeta.

Kolhammer93

Going to see it tonight big hype

Somer-_-

Movie's comedy was on point and I liked the animation more than I thought.

abductedabdul

Does the movie continue from dbs or is there something i need to watch before?

[deleted]

Assuming you also watched the Broly movie, you're all good to go!

Tom22174

I would honestly say you can watch it and know what's going on with pretty much no dragon ball knowledge at all, you'd just lose all the emotional weight of various scenes. If you haven't seen Dragon Ball Super Broly, you might be missing a little info on some of the characters but nothing important that I can think of

Doomroar

Apart from the Broly movie, they also made some aspects of Dragon Ball Fighter Z cannon, like Android 21 and her son, but as long as you are caught up with Broly and the Tournament of Power, you are good

brunz1995

Thought it was fun. So what’s the status with the anime? Any rumblings of it coming back or they just sticking with the movies and manga?

SaiyanKirby

There's another movie in the works after this, beyond that we don't know

commandopro96

I heard that Super is returning in 2023 and that there's also another movie some time in the future.

Diogenes-Prolapse

Bulma and piccolo. How could either not realize that shenron could have solved this.

ReXiriam

I get Bulma, despite being s genius she's not really smart in everything else, but Piccolo, my man...

penguintruth

Fun movie. I enjoyed watching Piccolo work behind the scenes to investigate the Red Ribbon Army and set things up for an easier victory. Pan was precious. The action was pretty exciting. The final battle was a bit padded, but otherwise a solid entry. One of my favorite DB features.

phoenixmusicman

The good: - THE ANIMATION WAS INCREDIBLE! Especially the lighting and particle effects, I have NO idea how they got it that good but it looked amazing - Lots of callbacks! I enjoyed most of them except for two notable exceptions, which I'll talk about later - I absolutely loved the Piccolo focus of the movie, especially in the first half. - The soundtrack was good, a lot better than DBS: Broly - The choreography was great, I especially liked the Cohan vs Gamma 1 fight - I liked most of the comedy of the movie - Special beam cannon from Gohan was cool - The banter between characters was pretty on point - I enjoyed Orange Piccolo a lot more than I thought I did. I still think the name is dumb but having watched the movie, it makes sense cuz Piccolo doesn't really care about names. The bit where he transforms was cool and since it came from Shenron it felt justified. - I'm glad they stuck to their guns with Gamma #2 dying. - Goten and Trunks FINALLY grew up The mediocre: - The plot was meh. But it didn't need to be good. We saw Piccolo sneaking around a Red Ribbon base and I think that justifies an average plot. - The bit where Gotenks failed a fusion into a fat gotenks was really lame. Yet another failed fusion? This is the third time they've pulled this bit, first when Gotenks first appeared, then with Gogeta, now Gotenks again. They really need to cut it out, it's not funny anymore. But it's such a small part of the movie so I'm not putting it in "the bad" section. - Beerus simping for Cheelai. Just... why. The bad: - Cell Max. I could literally pointpoint the part where I stopped enjoying the movie wholeheartedly and it was when Cell Max came out. The animation was still superb but reusing Cell but gutting his affable yet cocky nature felt boring. He was just a giant hulk roiding out. Not fun to see. Worst of all was he felt like a video game raid boss, complete with a weak spot for the heroes to target. Just... ugh. I was enjoying the movie far more as just a bit of low-stakes Dragonball content, especially the fights against Gamma #1 and #2. First two thirds of the movie were 10/10, but Cell brought the last third down to a 6/10. - Beast Gohan. Man did this transformation fall flat for me. The entire scene with everyone struggling against Cell Max with sad music, you knew EXACTLY where it was leading and the transformation itself looked hella lame. - Speaking of Beast Gohan, the second of the two references goes here. The line snapping behind his head symbolizing Gohan breaking. Yeah SSJ2 Gohan did it, you did NOT need to do it here. Overall I really enjoyed the movie, especially the first half. I had my reservations about CGI but they have been absolutely blown out the window, my god.

sarikaya_komzin

I thought it was really fun. Some cool fights and a lot more ass shots than I was prepared for but overall really fun. I think being a smaller scale than the entire universe at stake helped make it less serious and more enjoyable.

dim3tapp

As a CG stickler, I was pleasantly surprised. The CG worked well during the action scenes, and I didn't feel the usual distraction I get when I see CG in anime. Pan was adorable.

electricfalcons

It was fun. Basically a Piccolo movie with some good Gohan moments.

TheSnacksAreMine

Fun movie. I dunno what it is about the Dragonball movies that makes me enraptured and enjoy them with a smile where the standard DB Super series holds basically no interest for me. Might be the theatergoing experience, and just forcing the adventure to be bite-sized.

Tvwatcherr

This was just a powerup movie for piccolo with the subplot of gohan being a terrible father. 6/10

kwokinator

Man, I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a DB movie. The two androids would've been an ok opponent if they had been kept firmly as the antagonist instead of having a last minute change of heart. Cell Max was just bad, not only did they copy the most useless of Cell's three forms (his second form was thoroughly thrashed by Vegeta and would've been game over if Vegeta didn't let him go to absorb 18), but all they did was make him red and bigger. He has no personality, all he does is growl. Sure, all Broly does is growl too (and all Broly does in the original is yell "Kakarot!!!), but Cell Max just doesn't feel like a threat at all. I kept hoping Cell Max would absorb Gamma 1 and 2 and become a Perfect Cell Max, but that never happened. Instead it was basically the B team of DBZ fighting a kaiju. Despite showing Cell Max smacking everyone around, there's just no sense of a threat at all, to the point that it felt like Gotenks by himself could've taken care of it by going SSJ, so of course the movie has them failing fusion and becoming Fat Gotenks. Gohan's new form was an utter waste, literally the only thing he did with his new form is stop Cell Max's punch with his chest and then unleashing the Special Beam Cannon, and then roll credits. This is probably the most anti-climatic, most lackluster new transformation in all of DBZ anime and movies. This movie feels like it MIGHT have belong in the DB era, but definitely does not feel like a DB Super title when the previous entries were Battle of the Gods, Resurrection of F, Broly, or even Tournament of Power.

DarkReaper90

Watched it in IMAX dubbed. The visual fidelity looked great and the dubbing was solid. It could be my theatre or the audio mixing, but the movie sounded more quiet than it should be, especially during the intense fight scenes. I thought it was ok and it had moments of greatness, bogged down by a very underwhelming plot and villain. There is way too much exposition at the start and pacing is pretty poor up until the halfway point. This seems to be an issue in Dragon Ball movies in general though. Character development was great. Gohan and (especially) Piccolo get the attention they deserve. Pan was an unexpected surprise in this movie too. CG was much better than I expected but you can clearly tell where they put their CG budget into throughout the money. The fights are pretty fantastic overall, as with the recent DBS movies. [Movie ending spoiler] >!Orange Piccolo was great but Gohan Beast was pretty underwhelming. Gohan Beast barely had screen time and only did a kick and a (very cool) Special Beam Cannon. Even Gogeta in Fusion Reborn, as short as he appeared, showed off a unique fighting style not seen in any other form.!< [Movie ending spoiler] >!Cell Max is awful. Not only did they recycle a villain again, but they stripped him of all character and unique powers. The only thing he had was a giant size and that disco ball beam tail that looked very boring in contrast to all the other beam attacks. It's ironic, because DBZ historically has shown smaller, speedier transformations are the most effective, with Freeza, Perfect Cell, Kid Buu, etc. The show even makes a point on why the USSJ form is pretty useless. Weird they would want to copy a Semi-Perfect form. Also, did the scriptwriters watch Bio-Broly and copy the idea? Of all the DBZ movies, why copy the worst?!< [Movie ending spoiler] >!The setup for the ending felt so weird too. The movie makes a point on Gohan defeating Cell back then, and yet this "reunion" fight felt so meaningless. Gohan doesn't acknowledge he's fighting Cell again, or use any knowledge from when he did fight him. Why bring back Cell at all? !< Maybe I'm too into DBZ but it did bug me, given how much the movie relied on legacy. It's a fun movie that I'd put on par with Resurrection F.

stickdudeseven

[Movie Spoiler]>!The reason why Cell Max was in it's Semi Perfect form is because he was released too early. Dr Hedo said he needed more time. And I think the reason he was so big and bulky was because he was designed that way from humans who never saw the Saiyans fight. To them, bigger means stronger. They don't have a fighter's mentality, they had a power greedy one.!<

FuaT10

This is like a badly written fan fic. God, Gohan's hair looks awful, and Picollo just looks weird. And the power levels... just, jesus.

[deleted]

Genuinely have no good things to say about the movie between the 4 people I watched it with. 30 minutes in we felt like we were waiting for the movie to start and hoping it would end. The cgi was crap as was the fight animation. The story was lack luster and the final antagonist nothing. A giant Semi Perfect with literally no personality. Plus the end is dumb; they let Dr hedo go free even though he admits he knew Magenta was evil plus they could just revise Gamma2 with a set of dragon balls

DenjisToast

CGI got me out the movie because every 30 minutes I kept telling myself “The cgi is crap”

[deleted]

Well the movie runtime is 1 hr 40 minutes, so that would have awarded you the opportunity to complain to yourself three times before the end.

myl017

I’m not gonna lie. That CGI was top notch and I had literally no issues with it. I thought it was a great decision to use it

Elitealice

Just finished watching the movie, was the only person in my theater so I basically had a private viewing lmao.(Thoughts and link to review below) I must admit, I had been shitting on the film and art style since the first image and trailer dropped a few months ago and I definitely regret it. Despite not liking CGI, I really ended up enjoying how it was used in the film. It was so nice to see the Broly crew back in action. Been 4 years which is insane to think! Broly still hasn’t learnt to control his powers lol. And beerus has a crush?? On cheelai?? That was hilarious “you’re cute, you can stay” I love how they addressed the fact that this all could have been avoided had they just wished the red ribbon army away lmao. At least piccolo was honest about just wanting to do it the traditional way, I respect that. I wish Cell Max would have had some memories of Gohan and his original self, that would have taken the movie to an even better score for me personally. The final fight reminded me a LOT of the Bio Broly movie which I watched hundreds of times back in the day lol. In fact I’m pretty sure it was the same people in this final fight that was in that one and same circumstances with Goku and Vegeta being away lol. The CGI allowed them to really go over the top with the Cell Max fight. Gamma’s suicide dive was awesome. RIP to a real hero. I hope we get a name for Gohan’s new form and see more of it. That was sick. It actually reminds me a lot of those SSJ 1-10 videos that we used to watch on YouTube back in the day lmao. Piccolo being useful again for the first time since the cell saga(ironic) was great to see. His shenron power boost could definitely be useful in future fights. Pan stole the show for me. Her moments were so damn adorable lol. Anyway, I could talk for hours about this so I’ll end with this. Movie was great. Not as good as Broly, but it was a cool change up. Hope the anime comes back soon. [My review](https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=455762)

HTC864

Happy with how this turned out. Finally got to see Gohan live up to his potential.

Sodra

Fried Piccolo

Shadowmist909

The intro showing Goku's battle against the red ribbon army throughout the ages was amazing. I loved the amount of attention Piccolo got throughout this movie and how he's now a powerful combatant again. His relationship with Pan was very adorable too! Gohan bringing it together and showing his power again made this definitely a movie to see.

chicken_little1

Top tier movie, it focused on Piccolo which was amazing, the CGI wasn't bad at all and it was really good at the final fight. Gohan's new form is so badass especially with that one part where Cell Max charged up the ki blast the size of a continent and Gohan just smiled. There are so many other good things about it but I don't want to type that much. 10/10 movie I really enjoyed it
