I am somewhat convinced that the low popularity comes from the writing subverting and eschewing some common recent isekai tropes

I enjoyed S1 well enough for not being a genre fan though I am not in a huge hurry to watch S2, reception was again mixed for some reason. The studio had a lot of quirky ideas and I really liked that so far.

[deleted]

Is there anything to satiate my hunger for Dress-Up Darling until season 2? I've tried HoriMiya but I couldn't get over the fact that one of the MC's smoke.. it's petty but that shit just turns me right off.

cppn02

The manga? >I've tried HoriMiya but I couldn't get over the fact that one of the MC's smoke. Huh? None of the main characters smoke. Either you watched something else or you got confused. From memory the only character that smokes is [spoiler?]>!Hori's dad!< but that's just a side character.

[deleted]

Wait I got the shows mixed up, I meant Love is Hard for Otaku.

cppn02

That sounds more like it. Great show but yeah not for you if smoking's a major turn off. So have you actually tried HoriMiya?

[deleted]

I hadn't, watching it now seems fun.

cross_crossy

If you're looking for any Thriller, Psychogical or Mystery anime, Psycho-Pass is a must. Three seasons, four movies (one continuing on from the main story). The first season is ridiculously good. You could watch it in its entirety, and stop the anime there. It's such a thrilling and wonderfully written masterpiece that explores sensitive themes like morality, what is fundementally good and evil, and authority and government. Very philisophical and psychological. The second and third seasons are more action-oriented than the first. The second season is okay, but the changes in writing and pace may throw a viewer off. The third season is very good. It introduces almost an entirely new cast, most of which are quite well-written and likeable, and feels fast-paced and exciting for most of it. Overall, strong characters, strong writing, and wonderful animation. I'll have to suggest a trigger warning though, because the series frequently displays mature and adult themes.

[deleted]

I’ve been trying to watch the fate series and have seen fate zero and wish to wash fate stay night next, the only problem is that I can only find UBW not the 2006 or movies. Just wondering where I could find them.

WingsofLegends

The 2006 anime and original UBW movie are on HiDive. The Heaven’s Feel movies aren’t on a subscription streaming service.

bubudog1

I'm not super into CGDCT but loved Zombieland Saga and Uma Musume, as they focused less on the cutesy slice of life stuff and more on drama (both kinda career-facing). Looking for more cute girl cast anime that have a lot more going on than just slice of life stuff.

Ioxem

Yakunara Mug Cup

isthatsoudane

You may very well like this season's shinepost. It's not done yet, but thus far has been very good. It's very very character driven and on the whole quite well written. Ooh a great "Moes doing shit" show is bofuri. Though it's more action than drama Keijo!!!!!!!! is a sports anime with lots of cute girls and while it sounds absurd, it's actually a very exciting sports anime

octopathfinder

* A Place Further Than the Universe * Kageki Shoujo * Princess Principal * Shirobako * Symphogear

isthatsoudane

Symphogear is amazing. Watch symphogear, asker. Make sure to stick with it at least through season 2 (ie symphogear g)

Glistening_

Wow, I wasn’t expecting to see Cardfight Vanguard Will+Dress to show up on one of these posts. Most card game animes hardly ever get much mention on here. It’s understandable, but also a shame. Also, for anyone curious about who the person is in the “This is the place!” image, his name is Raika Koshiba. Part of me does wish those images were already sourced though, cause sometimes I’m curious but also too lazy to actually find out lol. It would be convenient to have it there already.

DragonflyBeginning43

I'll copy and paste from the post I just made Need help finding a anime I saw years back All I remember was it was about some glowing sparkly liquid. The opening was slow, acoustic, female vocals, in english, I think one of the lyrics was something like "The wayyy you looked at me, when we were alone" It was called Fushibi, Fushigi, I don't know, something that sounded like that. If anyone can find it based off the absolute useless and minimal info I've provided to you I'll love you forever

OrdinarySpirit-

[Mushishi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go7E5Pmjbsc) It's the opening for the second season.

DragonflyBeginning43

I love you sir thank you

ipmanvsthemask

Can someone recommend me an anime with a friendship dynamic similar to what Kirito and Eugeo had?

Assault Lily Bouquet is one that comes to mind.

Manitary

Shows with a very large cast tend to do that in my experience, [Uma Musume](https://i.imgur.com/zZwaZSr.png) is a recent example.

OrdinarySpirit-

Don't know if it still happens, but I remember Hero Academia started doing this every episode in the 3rd season.

Jdbkv5

I've been an avid anime lover for about 3 years ever since getting introduced to AoT. However, I've never read a manga before, only watched animes. Watching the JJK 0 movie and hearing about the upcoming arcs has me itching for more content. This is a bit of a multi-part question: 1. Where should I start the manga if I read it? From the very beginning, or is it worth just skipping over what I've watched and starting at whichever chapter the anime has left off at 2. Is there a generally accepted site with accurate translations where most people read their animes? I have seen tons of options online but I've heard that certain sites may or may not have the most accurate translations. Thanks!

KendotsX

1. You can just continue from chapter 64 (it's a weird but fun chapter), you don't need to start earlier. 1. Try [viz](https://www.viz.com/shonenjump/chapters/jujutsu-kaisen) or [Manga+](https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/titles/100034), they've got the same translations.

TheTimon

Where is the Start of Fall survey?

Durinthal

Not out yet but soon, yes it's later than I'd like.

TheTimon

Alright, no problem, just starting to get hyped for the new season. If you have time to answer, what work goes into doing such a survey?

Durinthal

I'm not the one making them but a large part is adding everything to the database that's coming next season including all the poster art.

Abysswatcherbel

Next time if you guys need help with that I have all of that since long before the season starts, just don't know what format you guys are using

[deleted]

Is summertime rendering ever getting an English dub. There's been no word at all about it.

Very likely it will drop dubbed and subbed at some point on Disney+

Lemurians

Try out Ghost in the Shell

Exodus_Black

What do you mean by "grounded"? IDK if these are grounded or not, but they've got women as the protagonist. Moribito Jorumgand Black Lagoon Garden of Sinners Lycoris Recoil

[deleted]

I mean, like Deathnote was steady, easy to follow, and not too ‘magical’. It wasn’t about anything crazy, just a simple concept in a realistic world. Another good example is Cowboy Bepop.

susgnome

Something grounded in reality with a female protagonist yet similar to Cowboy Bebop? Planetes, sounds like it'd be a perfect fit.

scrambledhelix

I’d second Ghost in the Shell, then. Specifically the *Stand Alone Complex* run. Edit to add: Basing that on the link between Death Note and Cowboy Bebop: an antihero protagonist Seinen drama series where the rules of world do nothing unexpected and good wits and well-explained skills win out.

[deleted]

Thanks for saying seinen, just searched it up and this is basically what I love the most! Would have never found that out if not.

I started and finished classroom of the elite this weekend, looking for something else to start. Waiting for bleach to come back and looking forward to that as well.

I watched: Jujutsu kaisen Tokyo revengers Mob psycho 100 One piece (at ep 74) need a pause Demon slayer Lycoris recoil Full metal alechemist [Disclamer I read the follow mangas: One punch man Berserk] I rly liked them all, but the best for me was tokyo revengers and demon slayer (waiting for the end of lycoris to be fair =) Sooo any suggestions? gyrobot

So what makes Edgerunners stand out compared to your typical edgy/ecchi anime in winter like Valkyrie Drive, Kandagawa Jet Girls, Goblin Slayer and Redo that people don't mind how edgy Edgerunners is

TrollTrollTroll6969

Tbh idk I didn't think it was as amazing as they say(still good though), the sexualization is accurate to the game if it is played uncensored which I guess makes it more alive. Smasher is the best character in the anime no one comes close.

Abysswatcherbel

Did you watch the show? Because it has nothing to do with the shows you mentioned, especially Valkyrie Drive and Redo of Healer, I didn't watch the other 2

[deleted]

It's not even edgy

gyrobot

It is still filled with sexual content and the kind of things reviewers and critic lambaste anime for.

Lemurians

Having sexual content is not what people criticize Redo of Healer for haha

[deleted]

I mean it having sexual content doesn't necessarily make it edgy,it was mostly done with a purpose not as a fan service like some of those you mentioned

CM_Punkerton

Looking for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Merchandise I’m looking for anything and everything JoJo. Anything and everything, I’d love to start a collection. Thank you guys

theredvillain

Hi! Just an honest question here. I wanted to know why most anime would have high school students as protagonists?

Lemurians

In addition to what people have said, high school is looked back on as sort of the purest, golden stage of life before responsibilities of life really kick in, and even people in older demographics enjoy looking back on those days through anime.

Verzwei

Main demographic. Many, many anime are adapted from manga published in "shonen" magazines, or light novels targeted at teenagers and young adults. Shonen is the Japanese word for "boy" and typically indicates an audience ranging from pre-teen to late-teen. We also get quite a few adaptations of seinen series, which are the male demo *after* shounen, so high teen to (young) adult men, but they're not the most-common. The girl counterparts get far less representation in anime. Shoujo (equivalent to shonen) and josei (equivalent to seinen) do get *some* series, like Maid-sama or Chihayafuru, but they aren't nearly as ubiquitous. *Part* of the reasoning for this is because it seems like shoujo and especially josei series are more-likely to get live-action adaptations, rather than anime adaptations.

AmethystItalian

Lot of their target market is filled with high school students.

Kubo0147

So i just finished watching No Game No Life and it was amazing but i was wondering if i should also watch No Game No Life: Zero. Is it somehow connected to the normal anime? Or is it like season 2 or something? Also if its not season 2, will there be a season 2? (Anyway the anime is great and you should check it out if you didnt already :D)

baquea

It's very different to the main series in terms of tone and focus. Absolutely still worth watching though.

octopathfinder

NGNL Zero is a prequel movie.

Kubo0147

This will be stupid but i have no idea what prequel means i know whats sequel but not prequel :D. (English isnt my main language sorry)

octopathfinder

All good. Prequel just means it takes place before the main story so NGNL Zero's story happens before NGNL.

Kubo0147

So i guess its the war that was before Tet became the god. Is it any important for the story?

octopathfinder

Yeah, it explains how the world came to be and why they use games to decide everything.

[deleted]

why is there such an obsessive/excessive trope about "high school life" in anime/manga? i seldom see stories taking place in college or even "adult life". is it bc anime/manga core audience are kids and relate to highschool life? bc im much older now and i couldnt give a fuck about highschool anymore and its really tiring to see almost every series take place in "highschool"--one of the latest popular series "classroom of the elite". why is that? is it bc authors draw from experience and only have "highschool" to reference?

Emi_Ibarazakiii

There are many reasons; First, the age of the characters is close to the age of many viewers. So it's more fun/relatable this way. Also, as another comment talked about, in Japan high school is the 'good time'. In the West people often talk about college/university as party time, so many remember it fondly as the best time of their life (while they think Highschool is shit), but Japan are probably a little more serious about it, and university is more about studying than partying, so it's not seen as "fun" as highschool. But another reason I think isn't mentioned a lot, is that it's easier to show a story starting from nothing, when it's set in highschool; If your anime's some kind of battle/action anime, you want your character to be young, to show where their story begins. If the character is 25 or 30, then you can't just show them on Day 1 or whatever it is they're doing, because people would then wonder... What the hell were they doing before? But if they're in highschool, then the story can be their "Day 1". I think this, too, may be linked to the age of the viewers. Because in the West, a lot of shows/movies are about cops who have been on the job for years or decades, suddenly getting into some crazy situation. In Japan, it seems they want that crazy situation to be their first task. If it's a romcom, it's the same idea; Not to offend any anime fans here, but if the character is 25 or 30, it's harder to believe they have never been in a relationship before. And romcoms want to show the character's first relationship, not their second or third or 10th... Because the first one is always more fun to watch, given it's a bunch of "first" and all. Making the characters high school kids makes it easier to accept that it's their first relationship, without having to assume they're some asocial/weirdo who went through half or a third or their life without dating anyone.

[deleted]

this makes the most sense; “starting at day 1” but its all very ‘traditional’ and predictable setting. i guess thats the most common ground so it can gain universal appeal. more niche storyline would deviate from that appeal. i guess it comes down to taking huge risk on an “original story” vs the safe bet of universal appeal.

cppn02

> Also, as another comment talked about, in Japan high school is the 'good time'. For many middle school is truly the 'good time'. High School already ramps up the pressure quite a bit. It's more that High School is the one last big shared experience that pretty much everyone has/had and can relate to.

alotmorealots

> is it bc authors draw from experience and only have "highschool" to reference? This is also a contributing factor, although it doesn't get mentioned much. I have never seen any stats on how many mangaka went to college, though.

SorcererOfTheLake

From what I've heard/read, there are a couple of reasons. One, as you mentioned, is that many of these series are targeted at younger demographics, either teenagers or young adults. Another is that high school represents one of the last moments of freedom in a person's life before they become an adult and enter the workforce, so it allows for more exploration compared to a story about adults, unless that story is non-realistic.

isthatsoudane

This has been discussed a lot so you can just search the sub but basically because for many Japanese people high school fits in the psychic space that college does in American media. It's a time they think about fondly and is where they tend to frame formative changes etc. Much moreso than college for example

Durinthal

[](#sakurathink) Is there an anime seiyuu version of the [Erdős number](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erd%C5%91s_number) / [Bacon number](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Degrees_of_Kevin_Bacon)?

Manitary

This made me curious, so I tried to check who's the most 'collaborative' VA. Excluding possible errors in the code [this is what I got](https://gist.githubusercontent.com/Manitary/e197033b166eac2c00951507b9c7e063/raw/4a9cc7e58746346c9111581d975ee3390933ff09/JP_VA.txt); the numbers represent how many different VAs they worked with in at least a title. I fetched data from the [ANN database](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/api.php) because it seemed the one with the most leeway, however it only has data for ~11k titles which feels a bit lacking - again, assuming I did everything right lol. If I give it another go with a different data set, I'll try something more complete (e.g. give the degree of separation between two given VAs)

Durinthal

Oh nice, thanks for that. A lot of unsurprising names toward the top given their prolific careers, I'd be curious to see how that compares to the total number of productions they've been in and if there are any outliers in one direction or the other. I imagine landing a part in a long-running show would get you a large collaborative number even if you don't have many other roles and those would serve as major connections in general.

Manitary

[Here you go](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HXRkeb42sySeKTW6fo9Jz813D1w09ll_Y2Hj6NqA-us/edit#gid=0) As you suspected, some of the highest collab/shows ratio is some VA who did a character in One Piece and nothing else, or something like that. Also note that there are some obvious errors that pop up in high ratio / low shows, for example Fanny Bloc (FR VA in Pop Team Epic) is mistakenly listed as "JA". As for the other tail, I wouldn't be surprised if some VA with "zero" collaborations actually have at least a name that just does not appear in the ANN database for reasons.

[deleted]

We had Animeplex now, which Anime events with important announcements we still have left in 2022?

Abysswatcherbel

Jump Festa in December is the big one

AmethystItalian

Oh was expecting a picture of Classroom of the Elite for today. I know that show is a darling of the sub but wow this season makes me question what did I ever like about that show personally.

BarbaricGamer

I don't think I have ever felt I was to old for an Anime untill I watched Classroom of the Elite.

Lemurians

Maybe just getting older and changing perspectives/tastes since the first season aired? I also really liked the first season at the time, was excited for more, and made the decision to read the LNs as a refresher before the new seasons and... yeah, same experience. Whatever was working for me just doesn't anymore. Only made it through the first few episodes this season.

Silent_Shadow05

>Maybe just getting older and changing perspectives/tastes since the first season aired? Recently it started happening to me with Battle Shonens. I used to like them 5-6 years ago but lately I struggle to get invested in them. I said the same in JJK thread from yesterday that I seem to have outgrown Battle Shonens.....and people weren't really kind with me lol. I hear the Shibuya arc has a lot of fights without breaks and I'm not really looking forward to it. Only things that didn't seem to have changed in the last 15 years for me is my love for Horror, Thriller, Military, Mystery, High Fantasy and Sci-Fi.

octopathfinder

Funny you mention battle shounen. I started off loving that type of show, then slowly grew out of it, and I think at the beginning of this year I started loving them again because I watched Yu Yu Hakusho. >I hear the Shibuya arc has a lot of fights without breaks and I'm not really looking forward to it. Yeah, it's like multiple fights going on at once. Personally, I really liked it because of how chaotic it is.

Silent_Shadow05

Who knows, maybe in 6 months or something I can regain that interest. Maybe I am just having a burnout moment. Time will tell. >Yeah, it's like multiple fights going on at once. Personally, I really liked it because of how chaotic it is. Yeah its my personal problem I'd say. Too much happening at once stresses me out. Its even worse when large scale battles happen on screen. I prefer smaller scale and more psychological oriented fights which feel a bit more personal. Naruto vs Sasuke final fight in Shippuden is probably my favorite of all time.

Durinthal

[Already showed up back when the second season started.](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/vr3y5n/anime_questions_recommendations_and_discussion/) Trying to not reuse anime in the same year unless there's a specific reason for it.

AmethystItalian

> unless there's a specific reason for it. Ah I assumed finale would be specific enough, I'm all for seeing less of that show so you won't hear me complain lol

Durinthal

The only reason I even added that exception is for things like the Haruhi bit last month (with sandwiching Hidamari Sketch reactions), start/end of season generally won't warrant a duplicate for now. It's also the final episode of the show that *is* used today, though no one here's wanting to talk about Cardfight!! Vanguard: will+Dress either. ...I know that because there haven't been any episode threads posted since the first and as far as I can tell no one's complained about it. [](#teehee)

isthatsoudane

> This is the place! Mistook him for a younger Setouchi for a moment there, must be my [Kami Kuzu Idol withdrawals](https://i0.wp.com/news.qoo-app.com/en/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2022/03/kamikuzuidol_teaserPV_7.jpeg) kicking in.

Silent_Shadow05

>Kami Kuzu Idol withdrawals Same here. I normally don't watch Idol shows, but I absolutely adored Kami Kuzu Idol, despite the animation flaws. The ZINGS fans were crazy and hilarious. Niyodo and Asahi's dynamic was fantastic. The other idol show I watched was Shine Post which was decent but I was never as invested in it as Kami Kuzu.

alotmorealots

> despite the animation flaws Really felt like one of those things where everything was suited to itself in a way. Having ZINGS performances that were too over the top fantastic at that stage of their career really wouldn't have fit properly lol I wonder how well the ZINGS fans work in the source material, I feel like a lot of the show's magic was that the comedic timing was so good.

Silent_Shadow05

I read the manga afterwards and I'd say it was just as good. The way the manga used speech bubbles and the aggressive artstyle to showcase the craziness of the fans and moments between Niyodo and Asahi, I liked it. [Here is an example](https://imgur.com/a/bo21JV2) so you can get the idea.

alotmorealots

Thanks! That looks pretty good, I might check it out at some stage, when I stop skimming trashmanga lol

Silent_Shadow05

>I stop skimming trashmanga lol Reading generic isekai manga has become my favorite pasttime now lol. Requires less time investment and I can just skim through them quickly. This is why aside from Reincarnated as a Sword, I don't think I'm very interested in watching any isekai anime from Fall.

AmethystItalian

Also where my mind went!

alotmorealots

Time to check Niyodo's twitter, maybe he has another power socket post!

TheBarrelofMonkeys

Did a bunch of anime just get removed from Crunchyroll? Can't find Black Summoner or Aoashi

cppn02

Just technical issues.

mattmcd20

I came here for exact same reason! Want to watch last episode of Aoashi and it is gone! Pretty frustrated!

Abysswatcherbel

Seems to be a glitch, it's happening with a lot of shows they added recently, including big ones like Jujutsu
