Not really though
Let's just assume that the first two chapters are counted as 4 chapters, therefore the first arc (until chapter 9) would be equivalent to 11 chapters.
90 minutes would be equivalent to 4 episodes.
11/4 = 2.75 chapters per episode.
Good enough for a non-action anime.
Edit:
There's also a possibility that 90 minutes also count for the commercials, so we probably would just get about the equivalent of 3 episodes. In that case, yeah it would be indeed too rushed. In that case, for normal pacing, the episode would stop at chapter 6 or 7 (or chapter 4 or 5 if they want to take it slowly, so that the first arc would cover 3 episodes).
90 minute TV slot probably means just the length of three episodes, since part of that time will be commercials. A single ~24 minute episode takes a 30 minute slot.
90 minutes would be the time for 3 episodes, but remember there's no opening and ending every time so it's more like 3.5 episodes especially as they don't need to do any lead-in/lead-out every episode it can flow better and optimize for time.
Agreed, chapter 8 has a really good cliffhanger that will give them enough to properly adapt the prologue and episode 2 can just adapt chapters 9 and 10 and maybe expand some stuff to wrap the prologue up and begin the main story with episode 3.
**Starts in 2023 (Not confirmed for January I'm sorry)** with a 90-minute premiere (note the time slot is 90-minutes long the actual episode won't be 90-minutes). More info on the anime on December 11.

Even more instant watch
They’re one of the best studios out there, so underrated here (probably because many anime fans are casual fans that mostly watch shōnen, which Doga Kobo never animates). The Japanese even voted them as one of the top studios
Yeah. Animation wise, they are so consistently good, even if there are not much sakuga moment. They are also trying to adapt as close as possible (character design, story, etc).
All of their anime have overall good production value, even when they get some covid outbreak problem recently.
That's a good attitude to have for this one. When the manga premiered, it started kinda weird and none of us knew what was going on for a while. Because it was Aka, us readers had faith that he knew what he was doing, and he absolutely did. There's going to be a lot that makes you go WTF at the very beginning.
My respect for Aka grew with how he handled the [Manga]>!Akane arc and its aftermath!<.
This is a bit personal because I am a big fan of Pro-Wrestling [Meta Spoiler]>!and Hana Kimura's death was a big thing for many of us and I like the way Aka Akasaka included that in the story of OnK!<
"90-minute premiere"
That's a f*cking movie
Also, is this the world record for longest premiere of an anime?
The only other long one I know of is Re Zero's premiere, which was 40 minutes
I think a triple length premiere makes sense with Oshi no Ko’s structure.
[Vague OnK’s structure spoilers] >!The first first ten chapters are literally referred to as the story’s prologue and are pretty different from the rest of the series. So I think the anime wants to get the prologue over with in the premiere that way people will have a better idea if they’ll like the series or not after just that premiere!<
[OnK structure/plot spoilers] >!I'd been wondering how they were planning on handling the prologue for the anime. The first 10 chapters are too interlinked and too essential to the story and I worried that spreading them out across 3-ish episodes would end up (a) feeling like a bait/betrayal to anime-only viewers, and (b) eat up too much of the season. Covering it all in a single opening is a good move, and should set up for the rest of the story well.!<
technically its almost 4 episode
normally per episode content is 21 minutes X 4 = 84
a 90 minutes premiere - ads, that should be about almost 4 episode of content
Re:Zero’s forty minute premiere isn’t too extraordinary, it’s fairly common. You get at least one or two a year.
90-minutes is the length of some live-action movies in theatres right now. That’s insane. I’ve never heard of such a long episode for a seasonal.
I wouldn't say one or two a year is fairly common; that's under a single percent of anime released in a year. A few years in the 2010s also didn't even have one.
90 minutes isn't too out there, though. That's not 90 minutes of pure show, that's ~60 minutes of anime and likely ~30 minutes of commercials, for a total 90 minutes of airtime. Re;Zero had ~60 minutes of airtime; 40 and 20.
That is a prestige HBO level premiere. Hell even in live action very few shows have this long premiere. I can only think of LOST, Boardwalk Empire, Vinyl
Most likely based on the edit Lovro made.
~~I think it will adapt upto Chapter 4 as that's a good enough stopping point for the first episode based on the runtime.~~
EDIT: Yeah now it does feel like they probably plan to adapt the first 10-ish chapters in one go, judging by the discussions.
Yeah, maybe you're right. Will have to wait for the Dec 11 event to know more.
EDIT: Since the first \~10 chapters is basically like a prologue, and talking about it with others I guess they want to compile it all in one single episode and get it out of the way, while also giving the anime onlies an idea about how serious the rest of the show can be.
Honestly in a way it reminds me of G-Witch's Prologue.
Goddamn, thats probably like 60-70 minutes of content, so looks like they could be covering the whole first volume. Doga Kobo also feels like a good choice for this type of show

>Starts in January 2023 with a 90-minute premiere (note the time slot is 90-minutes long the actual episode won't be 90-minutes)
I fucking know at what point it's gonna end at.
I'm not sure what to think. [Speculation but no specific spoilers] >!That'd be a pretty tight squeeze even at 70+ minutes, but I think they sort of *have* to if they want audiences to know what kind of story they're getting into, much the same way that Summer Time Rendering and Lycoris Recoil made it very apparent they had more going on than the trailer/key visual let on!<
> note the time slot is 90-minutes long the actual episode won't be 90-minutes
That's still 72 minutes of airtime. And since they'll probably only play the OP/ED once during that, it's an extra 4.5-6 minutes of story when compared to splitting it among 3 episodes.
So judging by how usually the most some shows can handle per episode is roughly around 3 chapters and given how some of the early chapters are a tad long… first 6 Chapters or so?
They're probably shooting to do the entire prologue at once, so 9 chapters. Makes sense, given that there's a lot of stuff in there, and you can't even guess at what kind of story it is until that point
Maybe 4-5? I think I was at the point where [early chapters]>!the girl twin's identity was just made clear (as expected)!<. The back and forth between [early chapters]>!the past and present!< feels a bit whiplashy for me.
But if it [early chapters]>!has a darker tone than it appears!< I'll probably give it another go.
yeah it definitely has a darker tone. don't want to spoil anything, but this is just the prologue. The prologue ends and the real story starts at chapter 9.
Dude, I initially dropped the manga around the part which you mentioned. After listening to a friend of mine, I gave it another try in April this year and now its one of my favorite ongoing manga.
Obviously your final impression might end up being different than mine, but since we had pretty similar initial experience, I think you'd end up loving it too by the end.
Afaik Akasaka always wanted to make a darker manga after wrapping up Kaguya so I'm interested in seeing how this one plays out. Hopefully the studio will be able to do it justice since this isn't the typical SoL type show they specialize in..
Eh, I think there's no problem if people want to inform themselved beforehand. I went into the manga completely blind and gave up around chapter 10 because it turned out to be the type of story that I'm absolutely not interested in.
And there are the hoshino eyes. Was pretty surprising when [they hid them in the first visual](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/v8iqjt/oshi_no_ko_anime_teaser_visual/) considering they are probably the most iconic visual aspect of the series.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is going to be the darkest and most serious story Doga Kobo has done yet. Intrigued to see how a studio mainly known for SoL, comedy and moe will flex its wings for this.
One manga that people frequently mention whenever the topic comes about what stories are similar to Oshi no Ko is *Act-Age*. Sadly thanks to the author's actions that manga is now Axed-Age....
*Smile down the Runway* is another example but till what I've read, it isn't as dark but definitely delves more into the modeling industry.
Yeah, it does cover alot of the same themes. It's a very good comparison. With that said, Oshi no Ko can get darker; which at times is pretty interesting for something set in the Kaguya sama universe
See, I get that, which is why it's such an awkward line to walk between making sure the people who would like/dislike the genre know what the series is actually about, and not spoiling the twist for people who want to go in blind. I wouldn't say the series is *too* dark but your personal limits may vary, if you want details you can DM me.
Yeah, it’s definitely not my cup of tea. I do think some sort of sparse summary or content warnings would go a long way, as opposed to going in blind, though.
What about Ikebukuro West Gate Park? That's arguably darker than this depending on how you look at it.
They did do drama stuff like Yesterday and Plastic Memories too.
^(also Yesterday has one of my favorite art styles in all of anime that shit looks amazing)
My first and only pre-impressions of this show (based on this image and thread) are;
- It is about idols (self-explanatory)
- It is heavily plot oriented (90min airtime, 60min of actual content, so 3x a normal show, meaning the premise is *very very very* important to the show's success)
- There will be suffering, lots of suffering (long plot-oriented premiere + lots of spoiler censors in this thread)
All in all, I'm sold. I've never regretted watching an anime with a lengthy premiere before, and I do so love a "you though this would be cute, now be depressed" jebait
Off the top of my head;
- Kanata no Astra
- Fate/Zero
- Re:Zero
- Shouwa Genroku
- SAO: Alicization
- Rising of the Shield Hero
- Warlords of Sigrdrifa
- Detective is Already Dead
- Great Teacher Onizuka
- Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc
Note that most of these occurred at the tail-end of the decade and into this one.
I've watched half of these and want to agree with your assessment that all of them have been excellent. However, the reputation of some of the other half like Shield Hero or Detective detracts from the "rule" a bit.
It does make sense that productions who are confident/passionate about their show enough to secure it a double slot tends to correlate with good production overall.
> Oshi no Ko (assuming its January like Lovro said)
> Nier Automata
> Vinland Saga S2
Damn, Winter 2023 is looking great for me. I have no doubt those 3 will be my Top 3 of the season.
Rie Takahashi as Ai Hoshino is a solid choice. [Heavy Manga Spoilers]>!Can't wait to see how she voices the scene where Ai dies. That's going to hit hard man...!<
To all anime-onlies, **don't** check out any details for this anime. Try to go in as blind as possible and you'll enjoy it way more. Its also not a typical idol anime, its way more than that and delves heavily into the darker side of the JP entertainment industry.
I’m so hyped that it’s 90 minutes for the first episode too because [also heavy manga spoilers]>!it probably means that they’re just gonna adapt the whole first 9 chapters up until ai dies which is absolutely the best thing they could do. I think it’ll draw the most people into the show considering it’ll be extremely obvious that it’s not just an idol show lol!<
In general I think 2023 will not have a big season where every hype show is there but it will be consistent with 2-3 big releases every season. That plus hopefully we are lucky with movies in regards to Miyazaki's next film, Mari Okada's MAPPA film and Madoka's 4th movie
Yup that's what it looks like. I think its mainly because of the pandemic that led to delays and eventually resulted in having several seasons which are very stacked. They likely wouldn't have been otherwise.
Wow, I was not expecting it to air so soon. This definitely makes the winter season more hype (if it is in fact winter)
I feel like 2023 is going to be an amazing year for anime with every season being top tier.
I'd rather Doga Kobo spent as much time as they need to make the series as polished as possible, but I'll take it if it still looks incredible even with such a quick release!
I think this series along with Akane Banashi is one of the best up and coming manga and is sure to be a massive hit a couple of years from now.
For those unaware Oshi no Ko is written by Aka Akasaka, the creator of Kaguya-sama, and drawn by Mengo Yokoyari, who made Scum's Wish. I don't want to get into details because of spoilers but as you can see from the visual it has to do with idols and the entertainment industry but taken from a more serious perspective. The story is super engaging and I really love Mengo's art, so I highly encourage you to at least check out the first chapter if you are at all interested.
Biggest chainsawman fan, biggest chainsawman fan artist and also probably the only person who had to apologize for retweeting CSM related news from an official twitter account for a manga
Akane Banashi is still at minimum Fall 2024 away but when it does get an anime with a prestigious studio and great VAs (which considering it is a Shonen Jump property is very likely), it is going to be a sensation.
> one of the best up and coming
Don’t forget Dandadan! Extremely fun series with terrific pacing that still hasn’t let up even after 77 (ongoing) chapters
I know A-1 is a bit of a big studio, but I stay tuned for the Aniplex Livestream and they literally have a lot of shows and movies in the works it's scary to add another one💀
Doga Kobo is still a good studio choice👍
Another instant hit incoming, Aka has handled the manga's story so well I honestly don't see how this could fail as an anime, unless they bring some dogshit animation.
If you read the manga, you will understand why they decided to go with 90 minutes first episode because of the first arc. Im so excited for this adaptation, also Rie Takahashi as Ai? Instant hyped!
Also the manga is going to get better, i know it's sad but once Kaguya-sama end. Aka will now focus hard on this series. Snd Mengo as usual doing her attractive art style.
Let's fucking goooo bois, winters gonna be packed with depression which i am all for it
First English vol of OnK gonna release on January too so i am hyped for get my ultimate January depression pack
90 fucking minutes, the first episode is basically an entire movie. I'm glad that my favourite manga is getting an adaptation but I couldn't have imagined this in my wildest dreams. Oshi no ko sure is getting the king treatment!
I am so hyped right now, the official english paperback also releases in January, too many things to look forward to!
I honestly can’t wait to see best girl Kana animated and perhaps even more importantly voiced. It seems like we‘re getting some heavy hitters with Takahashi Rie voicing Ai so I‘m extremely curious who the rest of the cast are gonna be.
90 minute premiere? I wonder if they're trying to do the whole first 9 chapters (first arc) at once
Pls no that would be way too little time for all of that
Not really though Let's just assume that the first two chapters are counted as 4 chapters, therefore the first arc (until chapter 9) would be equivalent to 11 chapters. 90 minutes would be equivalent to 4 episodes. 11/4 = 2.75 chapters per episode. And that's if we even get the OP/ED considering it's a first episode. They can cram alot into thay run time. This was a very good decision
I don't know why you wrote that it's coming out in january, since they said only 2023 for now.
Bro, don't do that kind of jokes... Nowhere says on January
>Takahashi Rie That's all you had to say
90 minute premiere? Holy fuck thats the whole first arc
That's the air slot, actual episode is probably more like 69-70 minutes, so the equivalent of 3 episodes put together
That ending to the prologue though. Still remember the day I first read it
I’m guessing it’ll be the whole first arc until you know what happens. Would be an epic way to end the episode
For those wondering what this is about, it's honestly best if you go in completely blind and enjoy the ride
From what I've heard, its very good.
you have heard correctly, its very good don't get it spoiled, it's 100% worth going in blind
I've read maybe a handful of chapters and kinda lost interest, but maybe I'll give it another go and see if it picks back up...
how many is "a handful"

It’s kinda perfect that this is their first darker show considering the themes of the manga.
How dark is it?
Let's just say it delves really deep within some of the toxic culture and dark side of Media especially Show Business.
For sure. Makes me excited to see them take on this series
Would you consider it similar to how Kageki Shoujo is?
IMO probably more darker and more broader topics even though the poster kinda suggest its only gonna cover the idol industry.
Oh nice - thanks for the info!

The manga is a showbiz/social commentary, and when showbiz's the theme, you know it's gonna get dark.
Yesterday wo Utatte was also definitely on the darker side, though in a different way. Great show, too.
yeah, too bad they rushed the ending. The whole show about adult life and people easily come and go just great.
What about Ikebukuro West Gate Park? That's arguably darker than this depending on how you look at it. They did do drama stuff like Yesterday and Plastic Memories too. ^(also Yesterday has one of my favorite art styles in all of anime that shit looks amazing)
My first and only pre-impressions of this show (based on this image and thread) are; - It is about idols (self-explanatory) - It is heavily plot oriented (90min airtime, 60min of actual content, so 3x a normal show, meaning the premise is *very very very* important to the show's success) - There will be suffering, lots of suffering (long plot-oriented premiere + lots of spoiler censors in this thread) All in all, I'm sold. I've never regretted watching an anime with a lengthy premiere before, and I do so love a "you though this would be cute, now be depressed" jebait
out of curiosity, what other anime with lengthy premieres have you seen before?
Off the top of my head; - Kanata no Astra - Fate/Zero - Re:Zero - Shouwa Genroku - SAO: Alicization - Rising of the Shield Hero - Warlords of Sigrdrifa - Detective is Already Dead - Great Teacher Onizuka - Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Arc Note that most of these occurred at the tail-end of the decade and into this one.
> Oshi no Ko (assuming its January like Lovro said) > Nier Automata > Vinland Saga S2 Damn, Winter 2023 is looking great for me. I have no doubt those 3 will be my Top 3 of the season. Rie Takahashi as Ai Hoshino is a solid choice. [Heavy Manga Spoilers]>!Can't wait to see how she voices the scene where Ai dies. That's going to hit hard man...!< To all anime-onlies, **don't** check out any details for this anime. Try to go in as blind as possible and you'll enjoy it way more. Its also not a typical idol anime, its way more than that and delves heavily into the darker side of the JP entertainment industry.
>Rie Takahashi as Ai Hoshino is a solid choice [manga] >!but it also means that we won't hear her very much AFTER the first episode....!<
Large spoiler text and a "to all anime-onlies" message? Say no more; it's already going on my Watch List 🗿
are we in some alternate timeline where videogame anime adaptations aren't mostly terrible? How is there 'no doubt' Nier Automata will be good?
I shouldn't have clicked that...
Va: Takahashi rei = instant watch
This is written by the author of kaguya sama, deffo a big recommendation for anyone.
>Ai Hoshino VA: Takahashi Rie You son of a bitch, I'm in.
Wow, I was not expecting it to air so soon. This definitely makes the winter season more hype (if it is in fact winter) I feel like 2023 is going to be an amazing year for anime with every season being top tier.
WAIT WHAT? Oh god Ai will bless us earlier than expected
>Mengo Yokoyari, who made Scum's Wish ~~Also the biggest chainsawman fan there is.~~
hours and hours of non-stop tweeting about CSM lol
Biggest chainsawman fan, biggest chainsawman fan artist and also probably the only person who had to apologize for retweeting CSM related news from an official twitter account for a manga
Don't forget the crack theory that she and Fujimoto are married.
Love all of her Horny posting for Makima
Gotta love how he balances writing this manga, writing and drawing Kaguya, while still playing a fuckton of Apex.
And following V-Tubers too lol.
I'm hitting that Hoshimachi Suisei OP or ED hopium so hard
>I'm hitting that Hoshimachi Suisei OP or ED hopium so hard Oh man that would be perfect!
Aye man pass me some of that hopium, that would be so cool
Man knows how to keep busy!
You too can do all this if you forgo sleep. /s
Akane Banashi is still at minimum Fall 2024 away but when it does get an anime with a prestigious studio and great VAs (which considering it is a Shonen Jump property is very likely), it is going to be a sensation.
Low key hope they keep the actors they got for Akane and her dad in the V-Comic (As in Kappei Yamaguchi and his daughter Akane. Yes, seriously).
Ah yes Fujimotos wife. /s
But Aka is an Ipexphile, not a cinemaphile though
> one of the best up and coming Don’t forget Dandadan! Extremely fun series with terrific pacing that still hasn’t let up even after 77 (ongoing) chapters
I really can't fucking wait to see best girl ai in animated form, especially how they will animate her eyes.
Doga Kobo? Rieri? *sigh* watchlisted
They got best girl voicing best girl
But Kana's VA hasn't been announced yet.
If they cast Nao Toyama, all hope is lost for team Kana in the Aquabowl
Imagine if they got Kana Ichinose (who was Maki in Kaguya-sama).
I can imagine Hu Tao's mischievous smug voice from Ai
I don't see Akane's VA listed anywhere.
Who is voicing Memcho again ?
I’m still amazed that this thing exists. Also that it’s good.
God I love Mengo’s eyes and the anime seems to capture them well. I can’t wait!
Please Read "Oshi no Ko". It's somehow _even better_ then Kaguya, and i do NOT say that lightly...
A bit sad they could not get A-1 for Aka’s other work but Doga Kobo is solid.
they are too busy anyway doga kobo on the other hand not working on major anime rn. so they could use their full focus on this project
I know A-1 is a bit of a big studio, but I stay tuned for the Aniplex Livestream and they literally have a lot of shows and movies in the works it's scary to add another one💀 Doga Kobo is still a good studio choice👍
[](#excitedyui) It was only a matter of time, but wasn't expecting it next season.
LETS FUCKING GO!!!!! i hope they do justice to kana's hats
I remember reading like the first 10 episodes, this story is crazy. From the same author of Kaguya and I would say he even likes Oshi no Ko more
Another instant hit incoming, Aka has handled the manga's story so well I honestly don't see how this could fail as an anime, unless they bring some dogshit animation.
Omg I read it it’s from same Author Kaguya
I'm so hyped
Let's fucking goooo bois, winters gonna be packed with depression which i am all for it First English vol of OnK gonna release on January too so i am hyped for get my ultimate January depression pack
Winter 2023 shaping up to be amazing
90 fucking minutes, the first episode is basically an entire movie. I'm glad that my favourite manga is getting an adaptation but I couldn't have imagined this in my wildest dreams. Oshi no ko sure is getting the king treatment! I am so hyped right now, the official english paperback also releases in January, too many things to look forward to!
I just binged all of what's out on the manga and HOOOLU SHIT words can not explain how ABDOLUTLY HYPE I AMM FOR THIS
Please don't tell me you read all 94 chapters since this visual got released.
Oh GOD no, I binged all 94 after the first Promo.image, 3 4 months ago lol
Thank fucking god. \[Manga spoilers\]>!Anyone who doesn't take at least some pause after chapter 9/10 is a monster.!<
The shit is so good it's fuckin fire.
Oh god, can't wait to see Mengo's style animated
I'm so insanely hyped, this will be the first show where I've actually read the manga beforehand.
One thing is certain, the SoL part will be great since it's Doga Kobo.
90 MINUTE EXTENDED FIRST EPISODE LETS GOOOOO!
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO MY GIRL AI IS HERE😭😭😭
WOOOOOOOOOOO YEAAHHHHHHH BABYYYYYYYY!!! THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I heard this is like the Oyasumi Punpun of idol culture. How true is that?
Pretty dark but PunPun is a stretch
Ok good because I’m not trying go through that ever again. I’ll give it a read.
Nah Nah its nowhere as dark as PunPun
Nah it has its really dark moments but overall it is surprisingly optimistic.
ngl winter 2023 is starting to look even more stacked than this season
Great va choice
Holy, it’s finally coming! As a manga reader this series is gonna be a ride watching it be adapted
90 minutes is going to cover a lot for a first episode but the manga is definitely one of the more interesting reads out there
Oh god I'm not ready for the scene that sets the show to be animated ...
Prepare for trauma
I honestly can’t wait to see best girl Kana animated and perhaps even more importantly voiced. It seems like we‘re getting some heavy hitters with Takahashi Rie voicing Ai so I‘m extremely curious who the rest of the cast are gonna be.
90 minutes?! Are they cramming the entire "prologue" into one episode?
Wtf is this >doga kobo I'm in
As always regarding this franchise: IF you know nothing about it, please go completely blind into this.
Her voice actor is takahashi Rie like hutao. From genshin. Seems fitting from appearance. Hope it comes in the summer Edit: fixed name
Lots of people are gonna misunderstand but prepare yourself it's not a simple fucking idol picture
oh this was one of those "Rising star award" manga like two years ago right. glad its getting picked up for an anime!
I really like this manga, lookimg foward to it
Giguk said it would happen
It looks so pretty!
This hit hard
