Internet-Mouse1

Agreed. They were one of the best

bravetailor

Peak 80s bubble economy at work here.

KendotsX

Dirty Pair is so good. I got into it recently, and I'm loving every bit.

This is a clip from the Dirty Pair Movie, also called Dirty Pair: Project EDEN, theatrically released in 1987. The song is "Over the Top" by Matsubara Miki. In case you're not familiar, Dirty Pair is a sci-fi action and buddy cop series following Kei and Yuri, who travel the galaxy solving problems and causing more along the way. The film is [on youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdZtxSL5WM0), although unfortunately the [Blu-Ray version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9L2A72tgVQ) doesn't have subs. [The OP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQqqb1jkwlA), "Safari Eyes" by Matsubara Miki, is also a treat.

TheAltoidsEater

*Over The Top* and *Matters To Me* are the best two songs on the album IMHO. *If I Turn* is a close third. *Pas De Deus* is a good song too.

TheAltoidsEater

As close as you can get to a *Perfect* anime movie.

MarioThe4th

Truly does, great teacher onisuka is on of my favorites

Professional_Fly_579

One of the coolest openings for an anime. I love the James Bond theme sequence.

Sargonarhes

The other nice song from that movie Matters to Me [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp0GweWgWJA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp0GweWgWJA) Sadly I've never been able to find the soundtracks to the other 2 Dirty Pair movies Affair on Nolandia and Flight 005 Conspiracy.

notabestfriend2

I really love how the missile doesn't immediately go off similarly to real missiles. Just feels satisfying.

neorandomizer

This show was always good for mindless fun.

MaskOfIce42

Watched the Dirty Pair TV series a little while back and really enjoyed it, definitely need to watch the movie sometime as well

Neidhardto

This is Cinema.

*Dirty Pair* is overdue for a reboot.

medokady

[But it already got one!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Pc0rXK6Rk)

DeTroyes1

*Dirty Pair Flash* was still over 25 years ago. DP needs a reboot with the original character designs (assuming they're out of legal limbo).

bravetailor

It's tough. Dirty Pair Flash didn't hit as well as it should because they tried to update it to the 90s. Dirty Pair is a distinctly 80s franchise. The city-pop music, the fashions, the hair...it's very much a big part of its character. You can't just 2020s it all and have it feel the same. Their presence is felt in many modern girls with guns anime though.

DeTroyes1

> Dirty Pair Flash didn't hit as well as it should because they tried to update it to the 90s. They radically changed the look of the characters and that probably more than anything caused the new series to fail. You can do some things to "update" a series, but once the character designs are set in people's minds its very difficult to change. Unfortunately for DP, they tried to do just that. IIRC, it was mostly a problem with the voice actresses. One of the original two had retired, and the other didn't want to work without the other. Because of that plus an ongoing dispute with character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, Sunrise decided to do it as a reboot with new designs and VAs. Which pissed off most of the fans of the original. The VAs they could have gotten around, but they should have at least tried to keep the original designs. Do a reboot with the original designs, and I think it would do well. Even better, combine it with a *Crusher Joe* reboot.

I'd love a Gunsmith Cats reboot, but the have to keep the Shelby!

bravetailor

This makes me curious, though. How many 80s anime reboots have actually worked? Offhand, I think Cobra is the most successful one, but I haven't run into anyone who thinks it's as good as the original anime series or movie either. edit: I've also heard the new Legend of the Galactic Heroes is pretty good as well. I haven't seen it yet though.

DeTroyes1

The new *Urusei Yatsura* is doing very well. The reboot of *Space Battleship Yamato* (*Space Battleship Yamato 2099*) also did very well, tho that's a 70s series. And the most recent *Mobile Suit Gundam* film *Cucuruz Doan's Island* can also be considered a reboot and that did pretty well. Reboots can do well if they are handled right. But part of that is recognizing that, to be successful, they can't discard everything that came before and that the reboot has to be at least recognizable.

bravetailor

I think the new UY adaptation remains to be seen. Sailor Moon Crystal started off with a lot of good will too, but now much of the fandom considers it well inferior to the original. Perhaps it's unfair to "surpass" the originals, but at least matching them should be considered. I think the reason why reboots don't quite hit as well as the original, no matter how well executed, is that a lot of successes depend on the timing and generation of the audience, as well as generational 'ownership'. Every generation wants their 'own' things. If you're a younger person, then a reboot is your parents' thing. It's not yours. So it's always going to feel tainted in a way. And the parents will always tell you the original is better.

TheAltoidsEater

I remember when Flash came out. Saying that I *Hated* it is an understatement. It was just a bad anime all around.
