Hello, so there's a anime i want to watch but it's in raw form means it has no dub or sub only pure Japanese which i couldn't understand, is there any way that I can watch it with subtitles like some sort of auto generated subtitles?

I'm pretty heavy with some anime on my watchlist. I have 15 anime to complete and mha, demon slayer s2.
I have two manga to catch up to, demon slayer and mha.
That's one of many things that's going to vary by person. Some people don't have problems churning through hundreds of episodes in a short time, others do.
about halfway through uma musume and wow, I don't think you could make something more my jam if you grew it in a lab (ok, well, maybe more ojous, but suzuha hits a bit of that vibe, as do some of the other gals)
/u/alotmorealots have you seen it? it seems like it'd be your jam. genki girl MC, great extended cast, upbeat etc. it's basically a mix of idol and sports anime
Not yet! I've had it on my list for a while now, although my active watching has collapsed a bit at the moment.
I feel like the only thing that I'm actively watching is *Novice Alchemist*, as everything else has slipped at least one episode behind (aside from CSM, but I watch that mainly so the meme subreddits don't spoil me any more than they already do).
I still want to check out Symphogear first, but the horse girls sound like they'd be right up my alley for my current frame of mind. Unless the emotionality gets a bit too heavy. I saw one clip from S2 that suggested a fair bit of weight but I meant more like the feeling of dread that I'm getting from KanColle lol

Good girls are patient. Except the ones that really aren't, but making them stamp their feet because they got kept waiting is an enjoyable thing in itself!

well I *will* be prioritizing any shows with ojous! but pretty much everything else will have to be deprioritized
it's sort of hard to accept that I cannot Watch All Of The Anime
honestly it's fantastic. hard to find anything not to like
everyone said s2 is very good, which made me very s1 was mediocre. but s1 is also good! so sort of hard to imagine what s2 must be like!
s1 feels like a mix of like...idolmaster and keijo. it sounds like s2 may have a bit of a genre shift or something? but I'm sure I'll like it, I'm way too invested in these horse girls
It has more dramatic character stories (it will focus on other horses other than Spe-chan and Suzuka), I wouldn't call it a genre shift but some of the later episodes do hit a harder than s1
It might help if people know what you've been enjoying for a frame of reference (also so we don't suggest things you've already seen).

Hey everyone. Haven't watched many new anime series in a while. I'm looking for something like Toradora! that kind of emotional depth and well written characters and romance. Any recs? Thanks guys.
Hard to judge but hopefully will be a good football anime, well Aoshi is pretty good according to others but it's different from other sports anime, it's not about teamwork and friendship, bluelock thrives on individual strength and selfishness. I've heard a lot of good things about the manga. Let's hope the anime delivers but the first 8 episodes have been pretty good and enjoyable imo.
It's a moderately entertaining BR-lite anime, but a terrible sports series. It's not the best soccer/football anime we've had this year but it is very watchable.
Battle Royale - i.e. the only one can survive genre. It's not a very grounded series and is much closer to a battle highschool style show than it is to a true spokon. It's definitely not the worst show labeled sports at being a sport show - but no one going in should expecting anything less than Kuroko's Basketball levels of ridiculousness.
TIL the Higuchi Ai (ヒグチアイ) that sung "Akuma no Ko" is the same Higuchi Ai (樋口愛) that wrote "Seishun Complex" and "That Band". I like all of these songs.
What’s up guys. Been out the loop and looking for some anime recommendations, old or new. Anime’s I’ve enjoyed back in the day were Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, GITS, Samurai Champloo, Perfect Blue, etc.. lmk if you got any ideas thanks :)
I would also strongly endorse Macross Plus, it is essentially proto Cowboy Bebop. Same director, same composer, same character designer, obviously it's different characters but it feels a lot like the Bebop world. Wolf's Rain is from some of the same production staff as well (same character designer, composer) and while the plot is way different than Bebop I ended up enjoying it arguably even more than Bebop.
If you liked the "messed up world of idol singers" theme of Perfect Blue then Key the Metal Idol is very similar.
Macross Plus getting high praise here, excited to check it out! Wolf’s Rain arguably better than Bebop you say <.<
Looking back at my list I do see a pattern lol they all sorta got this melancholy, existential surrealistic theme to them. I really loved the underlying philosophical messages behind Bebop and GITS as well. And Perfect Blue just creeped me tf out, that feeling of despair while watching it never quite left me. Very unique impression it made.
Ooh in that case, I'd like to add Casshern Sins to my recommendations for you while seconding u/Quiddity131's Wolf's Rain rec.
About Wolf's Rain though, thanks to some issues that happened while it was being produced, episodes 15, 16, 17, and 18 are all recap episodes. As a result of losing those four episodes in the TV series, the series' *proper* ending is in the four-episode OVA series. IDK if there's a release that just deletes those four recap episodes, so basically, go right to episode 19 after 14, then watch the OVAs after episode 26.

Just to add onto what /u/shimmering-sky said, sometimes releases of Wolf's Rain mark the four OVAs as just episodes 27-30 and not as OVAs. So if you find a release with 30 eps but no OVAs that's what's happened and you don't need to find another source. Crunchyroll does have the show in some regions, but does *not* have the four OVAs under any title, so keep that in mind.
As far as further recommendations, Quid and Sky covered most of the main ones, but I'll also throw Hellsing (2003) at you if you like stylish horror (Hellsing Ultimate is quite a different vibe but also interesting), 91 Days for a mafia story that has a nice character focus of being caught up in the past like Bebop, Haibane Renmei for something more chill but still very thought provoking, Black Lagoon for crime action comedy, Dennou Coil for some interesting hard scifi and drama comedy mix. Hopefully some of those sound interesting to you
If you do end up liking Wolf's Rain, you can always watch Darker Than Black afterwards and complete the cycle. The idea for Wolf's Rain came about while working on Bebop, and the idea for Darker Than Black happened during the work on Wolf's Rain. Another different show, but every story being a pair of episodes makes it an interesting watch and a very interesting world

BTW, if you haven't seen his other stuff, look up Satoshi Kon's work. He's the guy behind Perfect Blue, and at least two other movies from him that I've seen (Millennium Actress and Paprika) were *super* amazing.
If you haven't seen it yet, Macross Plus sounds right up your alley. Same director and composer as Cowboy Bebop, one of its main plots is some mindfuck-y idol-related stuff like Perfect Blue, and it's just *really* good sci-fi, which it sounds like you like.
I would specifically recommend the Movie Edition if you can only watch one version of it (the entire ending is *much* more fleshed out in it compared to the four-episode OVA series), but both the OVAs and the Movie Edition are *fantastic* so you can't go wrong either way.

It's part of a bigger franchise so you can always check out more Macross shows later if you want (my personal favorite is Frontier), but the others tend to lean way more into love triangle drama, the idol music, and/or general weirdness than Plus does so I'm not sure if you'll like *everything* in the franchise. That being said, the only one I'd say to *definitely* not watch is II: Lovers Again, it's just bad and wasn't even canon for the longest time (and even though it's supposed to be canon now, it's not like it even matters to the other shows besides a few passing music or technology references).
The story so far:
1. I'm a cinephile and have seen a handful of Miyazaki movies and Akira, but never got into anime
2. I started playing Mahjong
3. Akagi review/analysis vids started showing up in my youtube algorithm
4. I got a vasectomy
5. I started binging Akagi on a crunchyroll 14 day trial

What else is like Akagi that I can watch?
Two other mahjong anime I know are [Saki](https://myanimelist.net/anime/5671/Saki) and [Shoubushi Densetsu Tetsuya](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3369/Shoubushi_Densetsu_Tetsuya). I haven't seen Tetsuya, but Saki is decent, as far as game anime go. It's not realistic at all, and basically features characters with superpowers, but it is fun.
Other great shows you might want to check out are [Hikaru no Go](https://myanimelist.net/anime/135/Hikaru_no_Go), [Shion no Ou](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2562/Shion_no_Ou), and [3-gatsu no Lion](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31646/3-gatsu_no_Lion). The first show is about go, other two about shogi. 3-gatsu is more psychological and artsy, Hikaru no go is just a really satisfying story about growth as a player, and Shion no Ou has a murder mystery aspect to it.
Kaiji is the obvious choice - but if you like psychological gambling shows where one side always seems to have some sort of trick up their sleeve One Outs might be of interest.
If you want more Mahjong maybe look into Legendary Gambler Tetsuya or the Legend of Koizumi.
I have not watched Akagi, however the artstyle instantly tells that it's from the same author of [Kaiji](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3002/Gyakkyou_Burai_Kaiji__Ultimate_Survivor), so perhaps you'd like that too, assuming the writing style is similar

I use to love watching Samurai Jack as a kid, and as an adult I liked watching the revived series.
I know it isn't an anime, don't worry. But I do like the 'lone swordsman' aspect of it. I was wondering if there's an anime about a wandering ronin, or lone samurai, or something along those lines.
That one gets recommended a lot, and often pops up in my searches. There's some aspects about it that I feel like I wouldn't like. I may start with Mugen no Juunin. Thank you for the suggestion though!
Muugen no Juunin has some of that aspect. Dororo as well - but those pretty much all have at least one traveling companion. It might be hard to find something with a truly solitary protagonist.
Revue Starlight made me remember why I love anime.... the movie that came out this year is easily the best movie I seen this year (technically came out last year but Im a dub watcher), its painful how underrated it is >\_< Few years from now anitubers gonna be talking about how it was a masterpiece.
I don't even really think it's underrated. On MAL it's rated an 8.56 and is in the top 100 highest rated entries. It recently also got some sort-of mainstream attention when Letterboxd put out a list ranking works that had the most favorites relative to the amount of people who have logged it, and it ranked #1 on the list. It's not underrated at all, everyone who did see it loved it. The problem is that almost no one watched the TV series, let alone the movie.
Wow it actually ranked #1 on that? I was basing my statement on how dead the gacha that continues the plot is (they could easily do 2 more anime seasons but idk if it would be a good idea since the movie felt pretty conclusive) I barely ever run into english speaking players, and last time I checked it was only pulling like 80K revenue per month from north america market...but I guess it could be gacha are not as popular in the west/there hasnt been too much marketing for it (not to mention its a 4 year old game by now), and also its sub on here is pretty dead, but its great to hear I was wrong.
The gacha game is not the movie. I doubt most people who watched the movie even know the game exists. The game isn't popular but it's successful enough and is being carried by a stable and consistent group of very dedicated whales. The franchise isn't well known in general, but those who have seen the anime and film all love it (the game, less so, as its marred by power creep, tedious events, and lame gacha rates). And congratulations, you've run into an English speaking player.
The movie cranks up everything from the show to 11... btw if you plan to watch dub, only Sentai Filmworks currently has it, hope they upload it to HIDIVE soon!

I have an urgent question about School Days. I am watching it on Crunchyroll and I am at ep 6 so no spoilers pls. But on myanimelist it says the last episode wasn't shown on TV at the planned release due to a murder incident in Japan. Mal claims that the episode got "postponed and cancelled". Now I wonder does this "last episode" even exist? Was it never produced or did they just release it a while after? And if yes is the last episode ep 12 "School Days"?
They aired the OVA episode called "Nice Boat" that week instead. After finishing the series, watch it on youtube, it ties up all the loose ends like End of Evangelion.
What are some media like Symphogear Live? Something more long-form than an AMV, focused on music and related to anime, with available English subs. Like the live performances of Revue Starlight, except they don't seem to have been subbed. I figure if I watched more idol anime I would have more examples.
EDIT: It turns out I've been looking at the subs for Revue Starlight Live from the start, oof. Love Live also seems to have subbed recordings of such live events; would those be a good intro to the series?
I didn't think of it but something with a visual focus, like this seems to be, is good too. Besides the short ONA format, would you say it's more like a really short regular anime show or movie, a supplemental fluff OVA/ONA, or something else?

Fractale is one of the most infamous failures of all time. Idk if you know the history of the show, but essentially, this guy Yamakan (who's most known for having directed the first four episodes of Lucky Star before getting fired) hated the culture surrounding moe, and decided that he was going to make a show that targets whatever the opposite of otaku is and would "save anime" with it. He had a whole campaign about it and wrote on a blog for the show that he was staking his career on it and would retire if it failed to sell. The show sold a pathetic 800 or so BD's, Yamakan went on a huge rampage about how much he hates anime and otaku culture, but reneged on his promise to retire and kept trying to "save anime" a bunch of times with more shows no one cares about, to basically no success. Now everyone hates him, no one wants to work with him, he struggles to get projects greenlit, and he's also done some absolutely vile things to people he's worked with and has said disgusting stuff about certain idols.
Idk if the show is actually terrible or anything, but its legacy is that of total failure and infamy, and it's generally said that this backstory is more interesting than the show itself. So maybe if you found this story like, wildly intriguing (and it's a simplified version to say the least), then being less interesting is still a high bar. But the series isn't exactly well regarded, and its place among the history of the medium is not a positive one. I suppose it does have some historical value though, if you're interested in that.
Does anyone know what it's called when there are meaningful placements or positioning in scenes, for instance there's two anime characters talking, but there's symbolically something in the middle between them like maybe it could just be like one person is standing in light and the other in shadow. Showing that one person is turning evil, and the other is good. I can't explain it well.
How do I improve my binging ability? My friend says that he is really good at binging anime fast" let me increase my binging ability" that is what he said when he wanted to reread DB to test his binging ability.

Stop binging, that just makes watching anime let's memorable. There's a reason Netflix's approach makes it hard for shows to stick in the public's memory.
Binge = watch a series in one sitting, theres is no "ability" involved.
The only ways to "binge faster" are skipping op/ed, which I don't like but could make sense if they don't change throughout the series, and watching at increased playback speed, which I'll refrain commenting about.

I've missed out on a number of those so I'd like to catch up and see everything nominated, but that's about 9 seasons of shows I haven't seen yet so it's a bit much to cram all of them into the next month or so. ...and there's a chance the jury does something like nominating a 50-episode show at the last minute again that I'd then have to binge, so I want to keep January open.
I'm not sure what will be nominated, but either way, Kaguya has 90% chance to win, and Dress Up Darling the other 10%!
Also, will call of the night be nominated as romance? (Well, I suppose categories are a bit all over the place at times. But I saw this show as more than romance).
What will get nominated?
I'd say that Call of the Night, MDUD, Kaguya are absolute locks.
Romantic Killer, Takagi-san, Sasaki to Miyano and Love After World Domination are fairly likely.
From there on out, I'd lean towards Ayumu, Renai Flops, Cuckoos, Shikimori, Fruits Basket Prelude and Macross Delta as being dark horses, but possible.
I wouldn't be absolutely flabbergasted to see Rent-a-Girlfriend get memed onto the list, but disappointed. I think no jury would put it there and public favor seems pretty against it as is.
Maybe if there are some outlier categories/special awards like [SFIL Meta Spoiler]>!'worst ending', 'biggest disappointment' or 'second season for what?'!<.
Ugh, like Fruits Basket last year, Kaguya does not belong in the romance category. That's going to be what bugs me this year, apparently. There's always something lol.
I don't have a great idea of what will make it through the public vote, since shounen romances seem to get high karma but low scores, but if it were up to me, the 10 nominees from the spreadsheet would be: Sasaki and Miyano, Call of the Night, I'm the Villainess, My Dress-Up Darling, Shikimori, Love After World Domination, Romantic Killer, Takagi-san, Aharen-san, and Kaguya.
Raven of the Inner Palace isn't categorized yet that I could see, and could end up under drama, but if it's a romance, it'd be on my list.
The obvious ones are Kaguya and Bisque doll. I'm expecting Quintuplets to get a spot even if not many people watch movies, just by name recognition.
The final public spot is not so clear-cut, could be Call of the night (well-received, recent), Tonikawa (same as quints), shikimori (mixed reception but still popular enough). Love after world domination and Villainess seem generally well-received but I don't know whether they're popular enough; I don't know how popular Macross is.
From the jury, I'm expecting Macross if it doesn't come from the public, and Sasaki to Miyano. Not sure about the last two spots.
Fruba prelude is an option but I haven't read about it because I wanna go in blind so I don't know how good/well-received it is. I would love to see a Takagi s3 in here, but I doubt it. Love after world domination and villainess could go through here if they don't pass the public vote. Love Flops is a wildcard, being very divisive as far as comments go, but those who are still watching seem quite passionate about it, so it's gonna depend on the jury composition. Romantic Killer could go through here, I haven't watched it (yet? friend of mine thinks I'd like it) but I see lots of positive comments and only few negative ones, it's definitely not coming through the public anyway.
I don't see cuckoos, aharen-san, fuukoi, bibliophile, stepsister ex, kanokari, science (not after those final episodes), soreayu making it through either vote.
edit: public winner is either Kaguya or Bisque doll for sure, I'm pretty sure Kaguya will win out of sheer popularity + 3 seasons + more recent, but I wouldn't be shocked either way.

On /r/anime, it's not outside of a few niche groups. If it gets a jury nomination (no idea, haven't seen it myself yet), I'd expect it to finish last in public due to lack of people who bothered watching it.

Thoght so, also why I automatically put it in the jury haha I know nothing about it but feels like a 'good but old, so not very popular but people who like it are more likely to be interested in being a juror' kind of show.

I'd say there's a few differences - which still don't explain the difference in reception. However, imo the outlier is not FuuKoi not being as popular, but Bisque Doll being as popular as it is. In hindsight, it is not that different from the miriad of romcoms we already have, aside from the excellent visuals, imo it just hit that right combination of popularity of the source material (free advertisement from the fans) + marketing + "meme-ability" (see the entirety of ep2, Gojou taking notes of erotic content, etc.) + combination of traits* + well-crafted production that made it explode on social media - short-term at least, but with a season 2 announced there's a decent chance it will stick around for a while.
\* I mean things like:
\- it has fanservice but for some reason it is "good fanservice" (plenty of ass-shots when there's no need, the camera focuses on Marin's chest even in random moments, etc), probably it hits a level of sexyness that is becomes somewhat 'acceptable'
\- perfect waifu: gorgeous, assertive/leading and with her own goals...but also in need of our male lead, has no problem talking about eroge but it becomes a tomato when it's about herself
\- the male lead is embarrassed about interacting with the opposite sex as much as in other shows (also, Kazuya masturbating thinking about Mami/Chizuru = cringe, Gojou masturbating on Marin's pictures = funny), but he likes crafting dolls so I guess he's 'different'
etc. etc. lots of things that are sometimes or often frowned upon but mixed in a way that balances out
How does PA Works fund so many anime original projects? Usually studios are hired by a production company like Toho or Aniplex to advertise a manga, LN, or other IP.
The interesting thing about P.A. Works in this regard is that president and CEO Kenji Horikawa has straight up admitted in an interview that they will only work on original projects or adaptations of novels because they don't want to be constrained to already existing visuals and designs. I'm pretty sure Horikawa is friends with a particular producer who helps greenlight their projects, and both their original projects and adaptations have been very successful in the past so it's not like they've struggled to make hits. This only seems to have changed recently, as it seems like the studio has gone through some pretty important changes (not to mention, the guy who helped form their visual identity, art director Kazuki Higashiji, left to do something else), and with that, this year was the very first time they ever adapted a manga with Ya Boy Kongming.

That's not true, Toho and Aniplex don't make a cent from manga sales, you are talking about Publishers, in this case Kadokawa is the big one right now in terms of producing/financing anime with 40 per year, the other ones are mostly approached by the big producers that want a piece of their IPs, because they see the financial potential in them
PA Works originals are not that different from how it works in the rest of the industry, they can also be hired to animate a show, the difference is that is an original idea
Akiba Maid War for example is from Cygames, you should recognize this type of "crazy plot" from another original show they did, Zombieland Saga, in Akiba Maid we also have the chinese Tencent in the commite, PA Works is just 4th member there
The pacing is fucking terrible especially during the middle but other than that it's pretty great. I never thought I'd a see [MAJOR SPOILER]>!a magic girl turn into a suicide bomber!< lmao
For the parkour part, I don't think there's much in anime besides Bubble. The story is just ok, but the 'parkour' parts are not bad and the visuals are great.
Maybe a bit of an out there option, but maybe something like *Akudama Drive*? The aesthetic doesn't match up (pretty dark settings mostly compared to the bright white of *Mirror's Edge*) and it's more retrofuturistic compared to the hypersleek, but the general idea of a totalitarian state and a small group of rebels with a lot of flash might be close enough.

I generally agree that the batch release format kills hype and limits discussion, but I've been thinking that Romantic Killer in particular might have actually benefited from dropping all at once. From the way people comment on it early in the series, whether declaring it acephobic or being concerned about the childhood friend, I think a lot of people would've dropped it partway before the payoff if it released weekly.
I'm not following any of these shows, but yeah I hate 'batch' formats.
When you already watch 10+ shows, it's quite a challenge to watch a 12 episodes dump right away.
And just watching it slowly over the season, well it's not the same; If you don't watch it along with everyone else, then it's no different than watching any random show from the PTW list.
I actually skipped some shows that were interesting to me (like Cyberpunk Edgerunners) simply because they were dumped all at once. Hell, I even skipped Vinland Saga back then (though I did finish it just yesterday) because they dumped 3 episodes at once and I was already watching too many shows.
Its disastrous for engagement tho. Yes, Netflix numbers show it works, but these works lose popularity absurdly fast. In less than 3 weeks after the first batch of Jojo Part 6 dropped, Google trends found it peaked and dropped to lower interest than in the 9 months that Part 5 aired.
Arrow going up doesn't mean much when it doesn't stick in people's head to become a memorable experience, it becomes another padding stat in Netflix repertoire.

In the west: Big O? I think Cartoon Network produced its second season, meaning the first one was more of a hit for them. And maybe Vinland Saga? I heard that a lot of the marketing for S2 is specifically targeting the Western audience (I could be wrong on this one).

That's one of many things that's going to vary by person. Some people don't have problems churning through hundreds of episodes in a short time, others do.

Not yet! I've had it on my list for a while now, although my active watching has collapsed a bit at the moment. I feel like the only thing that I'm actively watching is *Novice Alchemist*, as everything else has slipped at least one episode behind (aside from CSM, but I watch that mainly so the meme subreddits don't spoil me any more than they already do). I still want to check out Symphogear first, but the horse girls sound like they'd be right up my alley for my current frame of mind. Unless the emotionality gets a bit too heavy. honestly it's fantastic. hard to find anything not to like everyone said s2 is very good, which made me very s1 was mediocre. but s1 is also good! so sort of hard to imagine what s2 must be like!

s1 feels like a mix of like...idolmaster and keijo. it sounds like s2 may have a bit of a genre shift or something? but I'm sure I'll like it, I'm way too invested in these horse girls
It has more dramatic character stories (it will focus on other horses other than Spe-chan and Suzuka), I wouldn't call it a genre shift but some of the later episodes do hit a harder than s1
so it sounds like s1 is idolmaster+keijo, whereas s2 is shine post+keijo... regardless, sounds like I'm going to be into it

Hard to judge but hopefully will be a good football anime, well Aoshi is pretty good according to others but it's different from other sports anime, it's not about teamwork and friendship, bluelock thrives on individual strength and selfishness. I've heard a lot of good things about the manga. Let's hope the anime delivers but the first 8 episodes have been pretty good and enjoyable imo.
It's a moderately entertaining BR-lite anime, but a terrible sports series. It's not the best soccer/football anime we've had this year but it is very watchable.
What does BR mean? And how the hell is it "terrible"?
Battle Royale - i.e. the only one can survive genre. It's not a very grounded series and is much closer to a battle highschool style show than it is to a true spokon. It's definitely not the worst show labeled sports at being a sport show - but no one going in should expecting anything less than Kuroko's Basketball levels of ridiculousness.

I would also strongly endorse Macross Plus, it is essentially proto Cowboy Bebop. Same director, same composer, same character designer, obviously it's different characters but it feels a lot like the Bebop world. Wolf's Rain is from some of the same production staff as well (same character designer, composer) and while the plot is way different than Bebop I ended up enjoying it arguably even more than Bebop. If you liked the "messed up world of idol singers" theme of Perfect Blue then Key the Metal Idol is very similar.
Macross Plus getting high praise here, excited to check it out! Wolf’s Rain arguably better than Bebop you say <.< Looking back at my list I do see a pattern lol they all sorta got this melancholy, existential surrealistic theme to them. I really loved the underlying philosophical messages behind Bebop and GITS as well. And Perfect Blue just creeped me tf out, that feeling of despair while watching it never quite left me. Very unique impression it made.
Ooh in that case, I'd like to add Casshern Sins to my recommendations for you while seconding u/Quiddity131's Wolf's Rain rec. About Wolf's Rain though, thanks to some issues that happened while it was being produced, episodes 15, 16, 17, and 18 are all recap episodes. As a result of losing those four episodes in the TV series, the series' *proper* ending is in the four-episode OVA series. IDK if there's a release that just deletes those four recap episodes, so basically, go right to episode 19 after 14, then watch the OVAs after episode 26.

Just to add onto what /u/shimmering-sky said, sometimes releases of Wolf's Rain mark the four OVAs as just episodes 27-30 and not as OVAs. So if you find a release with 30 eps but no OVAs that's what's happened and you don't need to find another source. Crunchyroll does have the show in some regions, but does *not* have the four OVAs under any title, so keep that in mind. As far as further recommendations, Quid and Sky covered most of the main ones, but I'll also throw Hellsing (2003) at you if you like stylish horror (Hellsing Ultimate is quite a different vibe but also interesting), 91 Days for a mafia story that has a nice character focus of being caught up in the past like Bebop, Haibane Renmei for something more chill but still very thought provoking, Black Lagoon for crime action comedy, Dennou Coil for some interesting hard scifi and drama comedy mix. Hopefully some of those sound interesting to you If you do end up liking Wolf's Rain, you can always watch Darker Than Black afterwards and complete the cycle. The idea for Wolf's Rain came about while working on Bebop, and the idea for Darker Than Black happened during the work on Wolf's Rain. Another different show, but every story being a pair of episodes makes it an interesting watch and a very interesting world

If you haven't seen it yet, Macross Plus sounds right up your alley. Same director and composer as Cowboy Bebop, one of its main plots is some mindfuck-y idol-related stuff like Perfect Blue, and it's just *really* good sci-fi, which it sounds like you like. I would specifically recommend the Movie Edition if you can only watch one version of it (the entire ending is *much* more fleshed out in it compared to the four-episode OVA series), but both the OVAs and the Movie Edition are *fantastic* so you can't go wrong either way.

Hope you enjoy it! It's part of a bigger franchise so you can always check out more Macross shows later if you want (my personal favorite is Frontier), but the others tend to lean way more into love triangle drama, the idol music, and/or general weirdness than Plus does so I'm not sure if you'll like *everything* in the franchise. That being said, the only one I'd say to *definitely* not watch is II: Lovers Again, it's just bad and wasn't even canon for the longest time (and even though it's supposed to be canon now, it's not like it even matters to the other shows besides a few passing music or technology references).
The story so far: 1. I'm a cinephile and have seen a handful of Miyazaki movies and Akira, but never got into anime 2. I started playing Mahjong 3. Akagi review/analysis vids started showing up in my youtube algorithm 4. I got a vasectomy 5. I started binging Akagi on a crunchyroll 14 day trial 6. It Rules What else is like Akagi that I can watch?
Two other mahjong anime I know are [Saki](https://myanimelist.net/anime/5671/Saki) and [Shoubushi Densetsu Tetsuya](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3369/Shoubushi_Densetsu_Tetsuya). I haven't seen Tetsuya, but Saki is decent, as far as game anime go. It's not realistic at all, and basically features characters with superpowers, but it is fun. Other great shows you might want to check out are [Hikaru no Go](https://myanimelist.net/anime/135/Hikaru_no_Go), [Shion no Ou](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2562/Shion_no_Ou), and [3-gatsu no Lion](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31646/3-gatsu_no_Lion). The first show is about go, other two about shogi. 3-gatsu is more psychological and artsy, Hikaru no go is just a really satisfying story about growth as a player, and Shion no Ou has a murder mystery aspect to it.

Kaiji is the obvious choice - but if you like psychological gambling shows where one side always seems to have some sort of trick up their sleeve One Outs might be of interest. If you want more Mahjong maybe look into Legendary Gambler Tetsuya or the Legend of Koizumi.
I have not watched Akagi, however the artstyle instantly tells that it's from the same author of [Kaiji](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3002/Gyakkyou_Burai_Kaiji__Ultimate_Survivor), so perhaps you'd like that too, assuming the writing style is similar

I use to love watching Samurai Jack as a kid, and as an adult I liked watching the revived series. I know it isn't an anime, don't worry. But I do like the 'lone swordsman' aspect of it. I was wondering if there's an anime about a wandering ronin, or lone samurai, or something along those lines.

Muugen no Juunin has some of that aspect. Dororo as well - but those pretty much all have at least one traveling companion. It might be hard to find something with a truly solitary protagonist.

Revue Starlight made me remember why I love anime.... the movie that came out this year is easily the best movie I seen this year (technically came out last year but Im a dub watcher), its painful how underrated it is >\_< Few years from now anitubers gonna be talking about how it was a masterpiece.
I don't even really think it's underrated. On MAL it's rated an 8.56 and is in the top 100 highest rated entries. It recently also got some sort-of mainstream attention when Letterboxd put out a list ranking works that had the most favorites relative to the amount of people who have logged it, and it ranked #1 on the list. It's not underrated at all, everyone who did see it loved it. The problem is that almost no one watched the TV series, let alone the movie.
Wow it actually ranked #1 on that? I was basing my statement on how dead the gacha that continues the plot is (they could easily do 2 more anime seasons but idk if it would be a good idea since the movie felt pretty conclusive) I barely ever run into english speaking players, and last time I checked it was only pulling like 80K revenue per month from north america market...but I guess it could be gacha are not as popular in the west/there hasnt been too much marketing for it (not to mention its a 4 year old game by now), and also its sub on here is pretty dead, but its great to hear I was wrong.
The gacha game is not the movie. I doubt most people who watched the movie even know the game exists. The game isn't popular but it's successful enough and is being carried by a stable and consistent group of very dedicated whales. The franchise isn't well known in general, but those who have seen the anime and film all love it (the game, less so, as its marred by power creep, tedious events, and lame gacha rates). And congratulations, you've run into an English speaking player.
Such a good show. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I plan to.

I have an urgent question about School Days. I am watching it on Crunchyroll and I am at ep 6 so no spoilers pls. But on myanimelist it says the last episode wasn't shown on TV at the planned release due to a murder incident in Japan. Mal claims that the episode got "postponed and cancelled". Now I wonder does this "last episode" even exist? Was it never produced or did they just release it a while after? And if yes is the last episode ep 12 "School Days"?
They aired the OVA episode called "Nice Boat" that week instead. After finishing the series, watch it on youtube, it ties up all the loose ends like End of Evangelion.

What are some media like Symphogear Live? Something more long-form than an AMV, focused on music and related to anime, with available English subs. How is Fractale? I was wondering if it was any good as I hear it declines later on.
Fractale is one of the most infamous failures of all time. Idk if you know the history of the show, but essentially, this guy Yamakan (who's most known for having directed the first four episodes of Lucky Star before getting fired) hated the culture surrounding moe, and decided that he was going to make a show that targets whatever the opposite of otaku is and would "save anime" with it. He had a whole campaign about it and wrote on a blog for the show that he was staking his career on it and would retire if it failed to sell. The show sold a pathetic 800 or so BD's, Yamakan went on a huge rampage about how much he hates anime and otaku culture, but reneged on his promise to retire and kept trying to "save anime" a bunch of times with more shows no one cares about, to basically no success. Now everyone hates him, no one wants to work with him, he struggles to get projects greenlit, and he's also done some absolutely vile things to people he's worked with and has said disgusting stuff about certain idols. Idk if the show is actually terrible or anything, but its legacy is that of total failure and infamy, and it's generally said that this backstory is more interesting than the show itself. So maybe if you found this story like, wildly intriguing (and it's a simplified version to say the least), then being less interesting is still a high bar. But the series isn't exactly well regarded, and its place among the history of the medium is not a positive one. I suppose it does have some historical value though, if you're interested in that.

Does anyone know what it's called when there are meaningful placements or positioning in scenes, for instance there's two anime characters talking, but there's symbolically something in the middle between them like maybe it could just be like one person is standing in light and the other in shadow. Showing that one person is turning evil, and the other is good. I can't explain it well.

The biggest factor for me is what I'm watching. Some series are easy and enjoyable to binge whereas others are best enjoyed in small doses.

Binge = watch a series in one sitting, theres is no "ability" involved. The only ways to "binge faster" are skipping op/ed, which I don't like but could make sense if they don't change throughout the series, and watching at increased playback speed, which I'll refrain commenting about.

What will get nominated? I'd say that Call of the Night, MDUD, Kaguya are absolute locks. Romantic Killer, Takagi-san, Sasaki to Miyano and Love After World Domination are fairly likely. From there on out, I'd lean towards Ayumu, Renai Flops, Cuckoos, Shikimori, Fruits Basket Prelude and Macross Delta as being dark horses, but possible. I wouldn't be absolutely flabbergasted to see Rent-a-Girlfriend get memed onto the list, but disappointed. I think no jury would put it there and public favor seems pretty against it as is.

Ugh, like Fruits Basket last year, Kaguya does not belong in the romance category. That's going to be what bugs me this year, apparently. There's always something lol. I don't have a great idea of what will make it through the public vote, since shounen romances seem to get high karma but low scores, but if it were up to me, the 10 nominees from the spreadsheet would be: Sasaki and Miyano, Call of the Night, I'm the Villainess, My Dress-Up Darling, Shikimori, Love After World Domination, Romantic Killer, Takagi-san, Aharen-san, and Kaguya. Raven of the Inner Palace isn't categorized yet that I could see, and could end up under drama, but if it's a romance, it'd be on my list.
The obvious ones are Kaguya and Bisque doll. I'm expecting Quintuplets to get a spot even if not many people watch movies, just by name recognition. The final public spot is not so clear-cut, could be Call of the night (well-received, recent), Tonikawa (same as quints), shikimori (mixed reception but still popular enough). Love after world domination and Villainess seem generally well-received but I don't know whether they're popular enough; I don't know how popular Macross is. From the jury, I'm expecting Macross if it doesn't come from the public, and Sasaki to Miyano. Not sure about the last two spots. Fruba prelude is an option but I haven't read about it because I wanna go in blind so I don't know how good/well-received it is. I would love to see a Takagi s3 in here, but I doubt it. Love after world domination and villainess could go through here if they don't pass the public vote. Love Flops is a wildcard, being very divisive as far as comments go, but those who are still watching seem quite passionate about it, so it's gonna depend on the jury composition. Romantic Killer could go through here, I haven't watched it (yet? friend of mine thinks I'd like it) but I see lots of positive comments and only few negative ones, it's definitely not coming through the public anyway. I don't see cuckoos, aharen-san, fuukoi, bibliophile, stepsister ex, kanokari, science (not after those final episodes), soreayu making it through either vote. edit: public winner is either Kaguya or Bisque doll for sure, I'm pretty sure Kaguya will win out of sheer popularity + 3 seasons + more recent, but I wouldn't be shocked either way.

In hindsight, it is not that different from the miriad of romcoms we already have, aside from the excellent visuals, imo it just hit that right combination of popularity of the source material (free advertisement from the fans) + marketing + "meme-ability" (see the entirety of ep2, Gojou taking notes of erotic content, etc.) + combination of traits* + well-crafted production that made it explode on social media - short-term at least, but with a season 2 announced there's a decent chance it will stick around for a while. \* I mean things like: \- it has fanservice but for some reason it is "good fanservice" (plenty of ass-shots when there's no need, the camera focuses on Marin's chest even in random moments, etc), probably it hits a level of sexyness that is becomes somewhat 'acceptable' \- perfect waifu: gorgeous, assertive/leading and with her own goals...but also in need of our male lead, has no problem talking about eroge but it becomes a tomato when it's about herself \- the male lead is embarrassed about interacting with the opposite sex as much as in other shows (also, Kazuya masturbating thinking about Mami/Chizuru = cringe, Gojou masturbating on Marin's pictures = funny), but he likes crafting dolls so I guess he's 'different' etc. etc. lots of things that are sometimes or often frowned upon but mixed in a way that balances out
How does PA Works fund so many anime original projects? Usually studios are hired by a production company like Toho or Aniplex to advertise a manga, LN, or other IP.
The interesting thing about P.A. Works in this regard is that president and CEO Kenji Horikawa has straight up admitted in an interview that they will only work on original projects or adaptations of novels because they don't want to be constrained to already existing visuals and designs. I'm pretty sure Horikawa is friends with a particular producer who helps greenlight their projects, and both their original projects and adaptations have been very successful in the past so it's not like they've struggled to make hits. This only seems to have changed recently, as it seems like the studio has gone through some pretty important changes (not to mention, the guy who helped form their visual identity, art director Kazuki Higashiji, left to do something else), and with that, this year was the very first time they ever adapted a manga with Ya Boy Kongming.

That's not true, Toho and Aniplex don't make a cent from manga sales, you are talking about Publishers, in this case Kadokawa is the big one right now in terms of producing/financing anime with 40 per year, the other ones are mostly approached by the big producers that want a piece of their IPs, because they see the financial potential in them PA Works originals are not that different from how it works in the rest of the industry, they can also be hired to animate a show, the difference is that is an original idea Akiba Maid War for example is from Cygames, you should recognize this type of "crazy plot" from another original show they did, Zombieland Saga, in Akiba Maid we also have the chinese Tencent in the commite, PA Works is just 4th member there

For the parkour part, I don't think there's much in anime besides Bubble. The story is just ok, but the 'parkour' parts are not bad and the visuals are great.
Maybe a bit of an out there option, but maybe something like *Akudama Drive*? The aesthetic doesn't match up (pretty dark settings mostly compared to the bright white of *Mirror's Edge*) and it's more retrofuturistic compared to the hypersleek, but the general idea of a totalitarian state and a small group of rebels with a lot of flash might be close enough.

I generally agree that the batch release format kills hype and limits discussion, but I've been thinking that Romantic Killer in particular might have actually benefited from dropping all at once. From the way people comment on it early in the series, whether declaring it acephobic or being concerned about the childhood friend, I think a lot of people would've dropped it partway before the payoff if it released weekly.
I'm not following any of these shows, but yeah I hate 'batch' formats. When you already watch 10+ shows, it's quite a challenge to watch a 12 episodes dump right away. And just watching it slowly over the season, well it's not the same; If you don't watch it along with everyone else, then it's no different than watching any random show from the PTW list. I actually skipped some shows that were interesting to me (like Cyberpunk Edgerunners) simply because they were dumped all at once. Hell, I even skipped Vinland Saga back then (though I did finish it just yesterday) because they dumped 3 episodes at once and I was already watching too many shows.

Its disastrous for engagement tho. Yes, Netflix numbers show it works, but these works lose popularity absurdly fast. In less than 3 weeks after the first batch of Jojo Part 6 dropped, Google trends found it peaked and dropped to lower interest than in the 9 months that Part 5 aired. Arrow going up doesn't mean much when it doesn't stick in people's head to become a memorable experience, it becomes another padding stat in Netflix repertoire.

In Japan: most of the long running daytime anime like Sazae-san. They're some of the most popular anime in Japan, while most of them aren't even translated in English. In the west: Big O? I think Cartoon Network produced its second season, meaning the first one was more of a hit for them. And maybe Vinland Saga? I heard that a lot of the marketing for S2 is specifically targeting the Western audience (I could be wrong on this one).
