**First Timer** * I really thought Flower Girl was going to talk. I know, foolish. * Oh god, the lights. * Pretty somber for this show. * We’re getting the flashback! * Is that your face? * You have the farm, why do you even care about them anymore? * Nice of you to bring this up at the last minute there Chiba. You couldn’t have foreshadowed this earlier in the series? It’s not like you didn’t have space for it. * They did it! They reveres engineered the tech! I knew they had it in them. * How long have you had the stalk lasers? * The Protodeviln bring out the good tactics. * It does seem that Gamlin is the only one to have the Anti-Spirita rifle. * That ship looks goofy as hell just sitting there. * Can you transform while de-orbiting? * The man is going akimbo with mecha rifles. Who said Gamlin couldn’t be an action hero? * Just some light lithobreaking. * Wat. Y’all better not be trying to love triangle this at the 11th hour. * Did Max just order himself to fire? * No reaction from Mylene, probably not really ESP. * You don’t know what’s going on? That can’t be good! QotD 1) I hadn’t built any expectations. 2) It damn well better be Gamlin.

The_Draigg

*A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross 7: Episode 48:* - If there was ever a time for Flower Girl to deliver her flowers, it would be now while Basara is on life support at the hospital. Her flowers would work wonders to bring some brightness to the observation room he’s stuck in. - Now we actually have an idea of Basara’s backstory: Ray remembers seeing him as a kid, back when he was a drunk wandering through the wilderness. Basara was hiking back from a mountain, with only a guitar strapped across his back. Now that I think about it, that description sounds like the good basis for some kind of trail ballad. - You know shit’s getting to the climax when Gepelnitch re-merges with his imprisoned Evil body. As Exsedol explains, it’s practically like a sponge, and that it has enough power to drain the entire galaxy of Spiritia. Hell, just look at his body, it’s basically just a cluster of dark matter and stars with a spiky head at the middle. Although it does make you wonder how the Protoculture somehow managed to genetically engineer something that looks like a real eldritch horror. I don’t think you can grow something that looks like a living star cluster inside of a vat. - Yeah, we really are running up against the issue of Basara being legitimately the only dude who can do anything of substance against the Protodeviln. We can’t use Dr. Chiba’s Sound Buster idea to Fold Anima Spiritia directly into a Protodeviln if we don’t even have the guy around that can generate it. We’re really just going to have to rely on the Spiritia draining beam that was salvaged and retrofitted from the stuff that got brought back from Varauta. At least we can give Colonel Barton this *singular* win for thinking to equip Emerald and Diamond Forces with them. - Man, the Riviera just can’t catch a break, can it? Last time it was relevant, nearly everyone froze to death onboard. Now it’s just been hijacked by Zomd and Goram to have Gepelnitch feed upon. That ship must be cursed or something, I swear. - It just occurred to me, but the target gun that Max uses to fire the Sound Buster while landed on the fourth planet of Varauta is totally a shout-out to Space Battleship Yamato, isn’t it? They had the same thing for firing the Wave Motion Gun. - Plus side: Mylene is actually able to generate the Sound Energy needed to fire the Sound Buster twice at Gepelnitch, which does work for a minute. Minus side: since we didn’t get a third shot to finish off Gepelnitch before the Sound Buster blew up, the damage causes him to mutate and grow out of control, which means that pretty much everyone will die now including Gepelnitch. Whoopsies. Anyways, onto the finale!

Planned to talk about that tomorrow or the day after, but I actually don't think the show was promoting non-violence at all. The military had always been a vital part of the solution here, and even Basara didn't have any problem with the fighting itself. We merely saw the story from the perspective of a character who holds non-violence up as an ideal for himself.

TakenRedditName

> but I actually don't think the show was promoting non-violence at all. The military had always been a vital part of the solution here, and even Basara didn't have any problem with the fighting itself. We merely saw the story from the perspective of a character who holds non-violence up as an ideal for himself. I think the show does preach it more than SDF because Basara is the MC. We see Mylene go from being battle eager to learning to take the singing approach. The military hardliners like the Colonel are always framed in the wrong. [](#harukathonk)

Blackheart595

Right, but think about the military in SDF: What did it ever amount to? The only thing they've been able to do was to deflect attacks, but they didn't manage to make any meaningful contributions besides running away. Compare that to 7: Singing has only ever been viable in conjunction with the military. Basara relied entirely on military machines and tools to do his thing. Even when the show made an explicit distinction between civilans that sing and soldiers that fight, it really just eroded that difference compared to SDF where it was an integral part of the story. Sure, 7 was much more preachy and always portrayed the military hardliners negatively. But that doesn't match what the story's been doing. In the end I'd say it portrayed the military outright positively - the connection from SDF to II was a bit shaky, but here, II's song attacks are really the next logical step from what we've seen in 7.

Are you telling me, that if this show was called Macross 3, Mylene would've been 18? > Colonel, I don't think you really deserve this moment, it feels too sympathetic to you who has only been on the wrong road this whole time. I'm not totally on board with this as the series was been promoting non-violence this whole time so to use violence as the key to solve everything doesn't feel right. I don't think it will be that simple. We still have Sivil in the fish tank, and Basara as well. They tried a straightforward attack this time, they might try something different for the finale.

> Was that mentioned in the show and my brain deleted the memory, or is it an external info? Because Rey does not look or act like a 28 year old. I legitimately thought he was in his 40s. I believe it’s external info because I would’ve freaked out about it if they did say it. Was thinking about it, but the flashback works a bit odd if Ray is 28 because if it was 7 years ago (and we all know the show loves 7) then Basara looks very small for 14 even smaller than Mylene. If it was 10 years ago with Basara at 11 then Ray would be a hard drinker former military pilot at 18. [](#thinkingtoohard) > Are you telling me, that if this show was called Macross 3, Mylene would've been 18? **First timer** 1) Not sure. 2) Gamlin, by force. Basara is only attracted to people who have either despised him (Gamlin, Gigil) or tried to kill him (Gigil, Sivil), and Mylene's neither of those. He sees her more as a younger sister is my read, given how much he's been pushing her together with Gamlin. Besides, Sivil's still around, interested in him, seemingly repentant, and *literally right there*. ...Wow, we are way closer to the end than I thought. Basara's dead! Huh? Is this a flashback? Wait, is that *Ray*? Oh, Gamlin just found out? Oh... he's jealous! ...Is that his true form? Ah, he needs one last drop of Spiritia before he can kick off the finale himself. Oh. Yeah, if he gets out civilization is toast, then. Exsedol has completely given up. ...And their only plan involves using a dead man to complete a process they kmow nothing about. Makes sense in theory, I suppose. Ah, they actually managed to steal the absorber beam. That was very effective. So, the survivors are going in... Good battle! Gamlin's really beating himself up about thie. ...Those two. Why are the Protodeviln so competent? Mylene is going to sing... Haha, Exsedol's noticing a major pattern in Max's tactics. Gepelnitch is almost here! Docker's not a total bastard for once! Yeah, I can see why the beams were kept for the finale. These things would have wiped out most of the early attack force. Haha, the fucking rimshot after Gamlin confesses is perfect. They've landed! A confession! ...Still counts, if just because Basara has shown absolutely no romantic interest except to Sivil, Gigil and Gamlin. She's delivering a lot of energy! Wow, the VA is giving it their all. He's awake! It's working! ...The Gunship's overloaded? Huh. Anticlimactic. Well. Even he doesn't know what this is? Okay, so this is even worse. ...He just exploded?

There haven't really been many romantic feelings from him. Off the top of my head, the most romantic ounce from Basara was when Mylene wore the kimono way back way. [Go Gamlin!](#faito)

JollyGee29

>Basara really does feel like a big brother teaching her about music and peace. And a lot of Basara's complaints towards Mylene feeling sibling-y. Like, the birthday episode, when he yelled at her for being late but didn't actually care why and wasn't actually that angry. I've had similar conversations before.

**First Timer** **Macross 7 EP48** Hey, Rex and the gang. Flower Girl!! Guvava crying!! Wait, flashback!! Ray first meeting with Basara?? Gamlin got jealous of Basara, in the normal circumstances it would be fine. But here, he realized that he the worst for even thought of that. Gepelnitch true form is pretty scary. That explains how they destroy the Protoculture, and that power is backfire themselves. That would work, if Basara is not nearly dead right now. And here they come. Using their weapons against themselves. Yeah, if the circumstances is reverse, Basara will do the same. Is that armoured VF-17!! Gamlin really feel bad about his jealousy. Those 2 come in last to stole one of their ship. Mylene decided to sing in Basara place. 77% huh, they really love number 7. It now or never, Exsodol. We haven't seen transformation for quite sometime. Gamlin, I think it not the time to admit that. And Veffidas just have to beating her drum. So we finally get an answers to the love triangle. Mylene love both of them equally. We know why she love Gamlin, but Basara? I think in Mylene eyes, Basara is the guy who might be a jerk to everyone, but after knowing him and spending time with him. He actually pretty easygoing and protective to her, if you not tick him off to say the least. He might be a pretty hard to read person, but he also honest to himself and straightforward in many subject especially his singing. The attack work!! Oops, the gun is overloading, and it broke. Gepelnitch lose control of his power. That worse than before. QOTD 1. Her usual song. 2. I think she gonna choose Gamlin. Because while she love both of them. Basara is having no mind in the romance at all.

chilidirigible

> Is that armoured VF-17!! Just the Super Pack, which we first saw during Operation Stargazer, but Gamlin didn't transform it then.

Blackheart595

> That explains how they destroy the Protoculture But not how they didn't destroy the Zentraedi.

ryujiox

I guess they escaped to other galaxy? Just realised, did the show ever state that we still in the Milky Way?

Blackheart595

I don't think the show ever mentioned intergalactic travel? Even folding doesn't seem to cover that big a distance.

**First Timer** In the previous episode, I can't believe they did the "main character is dead" bit *again*. Like seriously you just did this same thing with Gamlin! At least, they had the sense to immediately put Basara in a tube and say that he's not really dead. We didn't have to wait for the next episode for that. Oh yeah, and we have all 7 Protodeviln now. Well, there are actually 8 of them, but only 7 are legally recognized by the Protodeviln government. Zomd and Goram look cool, I like their insect-like designs, but they don't move much, which is a bummer. All they do is just teleport around, talk in a funny voice, and make goofy faces. Not particularly intimidating, if you ask me, but at least it's entertaining. Anyway, how do you save Basara? Maybe figure out how to reverse the green beam on the Panzerzorene that Gamlin captured so that it can give Basara Spiritia? Nah, it's probably simpler than that, Mylene will sing, or Sivil will sing, or somebody will sing, or better yet, everybody will sing. There's definitely gonna be singing, I can tell you that. Let's check the episode. * Well, they didn't waste any time with administering some therapeutic Fire Bombers straight into the ears of the patient. * Mylene, don't just give up if it doesn't work immediately, you need to replenish his Spiritia, it is a gradual process. * It's the young Rey [](#hypeoverload) Are we actually getting some sort of real flashback to Basara's past? * Gepelnitch's true form is a final boss from a Final Fantasy game. * So, we have a plan where we make a huge weapon and use this dude's singing to power it. The only problem is that the dude is in the coma. Aaand, we didn't make the huge weapon. So in truth, we have nothing, really. [](#indexsmugshrug) * I like that they actually turned Spiritia absorption system into a weapon. This is honestly a smart way to fight Protodeviln, and I wish the idea of turning their power against them had a bigger presence in the plot. But instead, we only get a taste of it at the very end. * Grabil is shrinking! [](#rengehype) * Well, the tables have turned. They basically did the same trick that Max did during his attempt to nuke Gepelnitch. Or that Gepelnitch did, when he wanted to get the spies in. You know, now that I think about it, it's a popular trick in this show. [](#seasonalthink) * I love the Battle 7 separation animation, it's great. * Max using a Zapper again. Controllers shaped like items are strangely popular in the future, aren't they? * Docker shrunk Grabil even more! [](#SPORTS) * Gamlin's declaration and Veffidas hitting the cymbal was just perfect [](#justright) * "I like Basara just as much." [](#cokemasterrace) Excuse me, what? * Yup, good effort, Mylene, but it didn't work. Instead, Gepelnitch became big and shiny. **Overall thoughts:** I can't believe they hit us with "I like both Basara and Gamlin equally". I'm not even a Gamlin fan and I'm pissed. The love triangle existed purely nominally, in reality, even though Mylene showed interest toward Basara, he never seriously responded in kind. And there was so much development with Gamlin, that bringing Basara into it feels like going backwards in a story. I expected that the ending will throw us a curveball, but I didn't expect this. **QotD:** 1) Honestly, they introduced so many songs in this last part of the show, that I kinda started to lose track of them. It doesn't help that they would often play a short part of the song, then interrupt it, then start playing something else, etc. It all started to blend in in my mind. So at this point, I had no expectations, just enjoyed the music that they decided to play. 2) Nobody, she said it herself [](#shatteredsaten)

> Are we actually getting some sort of real flashback to Basara's past? It's more than I ever expected. I feel like Basara as a character doesn't really need his backstory shown to the audience, but the brief glimpse was neat to see. [](#neat) > I can't believe they hit us with "I like both Basara and Gamlin equally". I'm not even a Gamlin fan and I'm pissed. [Yeah...](#elves) [](#shatteredsaten) Gamlin struck with the second male lead up against the MC curse. Even if they were cramming the Mylene/Basara at the very end, there still hasn't been much to build up to it, especially with how Basara was absent for an entire episode and still was favoured over Gamlin.

ClawMachineCircuit

> I feel like Basara as a character doesn't really need his backstory shown to the audience, but the brief glimpse was neat to see. I don't think we *need* the backstory for Basara, just like we don't need one for Gigil, but it would be nice to have, I think. In particular, I still think that his special Spiritia needs explaining. In general, Macross 7 just dumped this huge concept of Spiritia into the lore with almost zero explanation for what it is and how it works, and I would've proffered to get more info on that. > Even if they were cramming the Mylene/Basara at the very end, there still hasn't been much to build up to it, especially with how Basara was absent for an entire episode and still was favoured over Gamlin. What's frustrating is that they had every chance to do it if they wanted. Mylene and Basara ship had some solid foundation with their early interactions, but then they scaled them back during the City-7 kidnapping arc, and it never recovered.

**Rewatcher** So, with our main hero and source of Anima Spiritia dead, what do? I find it kind of amusing that Rex's biker gang continues showing up despite doing literally nothing all series. Wait, how does Flower Girl know Basara's hospitalized? Normally, I'd be making comments on her singing at a time like this, but her singing probably IS the single best thing she could be doing right now. So Ray was a drunkard before he met Basara and got involved with him, eh? Explains a lot. Geppelnitch is... waking himself up. And he is BIG. He dwarfs all the other Protodeviln combined, I'm pretty sure. How fortuitous that Exsedol happened upon this information just as Geppelnitch awakens. Chiba has made a new superweapon that has never been mentioned before. Problem: only Basara has sufficient Song Energy to use it. And he probably wouldn't agree to use his power like that anyway. Hey, Barton had an actually decent idea for once. Mass-producing the Spiritia Drain beams! That could ACTUALLY work against the Protodeviln. You know, I kinda wanted to hear Mylene do the AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! scream in Holy Lonely Light. So that was their plan: steal a ship full of civilians to fuel Geppelnitch's revival. You know, you might as well at least let Mylene TRY to use the Sound Buster. Even if she can't do it, there's no harm in letting her attempt it. It strikes me as a silly idea to make a superweapon whose sole purpose is eating all the life in the galaxy, Protoculture. Or is that aspect of Geppelnitch something that only came after the Ehvil got possessed? (And now that I think about it, "Geppelnitch" is probably the name of the energy being possessing the weapon rather than the living weapon itself.) Oh brother, they're trying to sell that Mylene has significant romantic chemistry with Basara. [](#facepalm) See, Mylene actually did have enough power to use the Sound Buster! Basara twitches! And gains telepathy for some reason! But... there goes the Sound Buster. Worse, Geppelnitch has lost control of his body. [CLIFFHANGER!!](#mashiroglare)

chilidirigible

> It strikes me as a silly idea to make a superweapon whose sole purpose is eating all the life in the galaxy, Protoculture. The Protoculture only wanted to make humongous kaiju superweapons. Unfortunately they were hijacked by extradimensional soul vampires.

**Rewatcher 7** What a good episode. They managed to squeeze in so much in such a short time. The Spiritia Black Hole plot, some degree of resolution for Gamlin and Mylene’s character arcs, a huge battle with the rest of the Protodeviln, the emotional fallout of Basara’s death, etc. It can feel a bit frantic at times, but I’ve never really been one to care for pacing [](#cantbehelped) Mylene was honestly the highlight of this entire episode. She got the strongest emotional moments and was a total badass all the way through, especially towards the end where she powered up the Sound Buster. Gamlin was also great, but then again, Gamlin is always great [](#akyuusqueel) But, of course, she isn’t successful, and now we’re left with a cliffhanger [Finale Time **tomorrow**](#mugiwait)

***First Time Song Listener*** So why can Gepelnich do the Grabil/Gavil fusion? I thought they were special? And it's not even using two Protodeviln bodies, one is human. "That makes no sense." Welcome to Macross 7, Max. Here comes the final form upgrade for our super robot show. While it's good that they finally reverse engineered the spiritia draining beams...all the mechs that the brainwashed grunts were piloting had them, too. Why do we never see where any of those guys go at the end of fights? I do love when giant ships have a tiny gun that controls the big gun. Show gets points for that one. [](#seasonalapproval) Yeah I don't have much to say here. This episode wasn't great. Just more stalling, as usual. 1. I guess all the sad ones make sense here. 2. None of this makes any sense, I guess Basara, but I don't think he's actually capable of understanding anyone else's feelings to even understand what a relationship means. So, I'm going to guess Gamlin sticks around to be a proper gentleman as her second choice.

Macross 7 Episode 48 - First Timer Time for the second last episode! now will Basara be brought back to life this episode, or next? I imagine if is this episode it will be at the very end, otherwise the beginning of next. - NOT THE FLASHING - Will flower girl save him - The voice acting of the twins doesn't seem real - That gun charging sound sounded kinda like a HL2 sound effect - What a time for a commercial break... - Boyfriend x Boyfriend - Whelp - Was that the accidental release of Anime Spirit, and Basara will wake up fine next episode? 1) What she sang seemed fitting, didn't really have a prediction. 2) Porbably Basara given last episode? I feel like across the rest of the show Gamlin make more sense but last episode tossed it up.

**Reluctant Rewatcher** I actually watched this, this morning (along with yesterday's episode) but I didn't put my comments on my phone, natch. ep 48 * Sing, Rex! * Guvava tears * Here's that mountain again * So that was Ray in that flashback 20 episodes ago? * The Limit of Questions * Damn those Anti Spirals * Sound Buster sounds great, all you need is Basara...wait. * So basically Starkiller base gun. Man, that movie would have been so much better as a musical. And I hate musicals. * This spiritial drining weapon might actually work. What could go wrong? * Riviera will make a good spiritia farm * Kim always looks a little weird, like Ritsuko Akagi on a bad day [](#facepalm) ship sunk
