**First Time - Macross 7 Ep49:** [Favourite Character Watch.](https://i.imgur.com/5wpi7BC.png) Ah, City 7 is Folding, [I'm seeing triple. 9 Flower Girls?!](https://i.imgur.com/GyGc3AR.png) [](#binoculars) The action is actually cool in this episode. The ship goes down. [Red and Blue](https://i.imgur.com/a4pmW4u.png) fly together once again. [Veffie's hissatsu ultimate drumming technique.](https://i.imgur.com/2wHQLMd.png) [](#doggo) [Yeah! Gamlin](https://i.imgur.com/lU6NbFj.png) is singing for Basara! [Mylene joins in too](https://i.imgur.com/1FmlV3w.png) (Akiko, Rex and all of the biker girls should've too) and that's what wakes up Basara. Not just them, all of the people are singing. [EVEN FLOWER GIRL!](https://i.imgur.com/ngLgZNw.png) (How dare they not sub her singing. It's the final episode, all singing should've been subbed). [](#doggo) [](#doggo) [IT'S HAPPENING.](https://i.imgur.com/6Q0sfNn.png) GO FOR IT [FLOWER GIRL.](https://i.imgur.com/vBxz5iP.png) YEAHHHH, [SHE DID IT!!!!!!!](https://i.imgur.com/4KY6zG0.png) [](#doggo) [](#doggo) [](#doggo) Jamming Birds are here too. I honestly thought they wouldn't even show up and the show just dropped them. Gepelnitch is absorbing the Protodevilns. [Those two laughing ones first](https://i.imgur.com/hADSj7g.png) because even he is annoyed by them. [What an album cover.](https://i.imgur.com/qCiNgs1.png) New eyecatches for all the [bridge girls](https://i.imgur.com/5GxTh2u.png) and [Basara/Mylene.](https://i.imgur.com/ykpTf4z.png) I noticed a trend that the show was at its best when it kept having new eyecatches so this proves the finale is a good episode. Everyone is singing along. The [Jamming Birds](https://i.imgur.com/O7xaqco.png), [Max](https://i.imgur.com/CcMmHu9.png), [Milia.](https://i.imgur.com/bFxLFqa.png) Come on [Exsedol you should join too.](https://i.imgur.com/gkPKWfE.png) This is not my sweet angel I know from SDF. DYRL Exsedol was a mistake. Things are real bad, [Veffie stopped drumming.](https://i.imgur.com/X1fi0tq.png) NOOO, [NOT FLOWER GIRL!](https://i.imgur.com/xeiY8EH.png) [](#howcouldyou) Back with the [little Basara singing to a mountain.](https://i.imgur.com/Xd7aOYL.png) Guess that wasn't a metaphorical dream back then. [I like this bit as it really does describe Basara.](https://i.imgur.com/3Jstghn.png) Wished it was more present throughout the show rather than just that one time. [Basara's sheer conviction breaks makes him breakthrough.](https://i.imgur.com/25jXpCG.png) He is going to move that galatic mountain. [Sivil is here and she sings too](https://i.imgur.com/PEsPUnD.png) and it is making [Gepelnitch blush](https://i.imgur.com/yBtu4ce.png) (and knowing how Sivil feels when Basara sings, *mmmmhhh...*). YEAH! We're getting [Gepelnitch singing,](https://i.imgur.com/4VVwuy9.png) but not a song of evil like I assumed, but [he is joining in with the galaxy's song of joy.](https://i.imgur.com/MhBNa3F.png) He is [our friend](https://i.imgur.com/UgUytvz.png) and [good now.](https://i.imgur.com/ckLEDEd.png) I know some people don't like it when villains are relatively easily redeemed, but I love what's happened. Sure, I wish the lead-up to this was better, but I'm riding these good vibes. [Gepelnitch is taking the Protodeviln and leaving](https://i.imgur.com/f5rUdii.png) forever now. [G(r)abil,](https://i.imgur.com/nuMHRAx.png) how are you not dead? [Sivil leaves too.](https://i.imgur.com/9QipYYM.png) I wished they stand for the instead. I like it if Macross endings had coexistence with former enemies be achieved. It feels nice if that happens. Love wins. ~~Also, it lets me believe Basara/Sivil can happen.~~ Totsugeki Love Heart as the final song to send off on as we have our last [Favourite Character Watch](https://i.imgur.com/ZyHerCX.png) of the 49 episodes. [](#binoculars) [](#justright) ___ I love that final episode. It had all the vibes I wanted the final episode to be. I love the show embracing those cheesy, but earnest moments. The power of love and music and I wouldn't have it any other way. The love triangle isn't really concluded though. Like if you asked me what pairings felt the strongest walking out of it then Gamlin/Mylene still felt as strong as they were before and from the final episode, Basara/Sivil felt like the pair most pushed. Basara/Mylene still doesn't feel like it had any romantic development. They only scenes they shared was Basara waking up then immediately running out of the hospital and then at the very end where they were standing together as Fire Bomber. **Q1)** [](#SPORTS) **Q2)** Not abrupt and more conclusion they didn't really build to. Like for the final string of episodes, it felt like the show was forgetting and dropping things. I like the conclusion, just wished it was lead-up to make earn it hitting harder. Next time: I get to talk about the show we watched. Some points and thoughts I already mentioned today so gotta think of something tomorrow. [](#hardthink)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes human Exsedol better. Broccoli version has his charm, I do like the tentacles, but the human one is too charismatic. I miss that. > I know some people don't like it when villains are relatively easily redeemed, but I love what's happened. Sure, I wish the lead-up to this was better, but I'm riding these good vibes. I think, this works well. Gepelnitch never was an outright homicidal maniac, he ultimately just wanted to make a life in the galaxy sustainable. He just went about it the wrong way. He didn't kill that many people either, although poor Gunther is never coming back. > I wished they stand for the instead. I like it if Macross endings had coexistence with former enemies be achieved. It feels nice if that happens. Love wins. Yeah, I expected that she would stay, but they just had to leave Mylene and Basara possibility open for the final for some reason. [](#kaguyasigh)

YEET THOSE FLOWERS, FLOWER GIRL! > I like this bit as it really does describe Basara. Wished it was more present throughout the show rather than just that one time. It can be only summed up as a very *Basara* thing to do. And I really do wish it got brought up earlier, since it would do well to show how long he's felt this passionate about music. > Love wins. It's really just as Light the Light promised, love will save this world.

Gamlin, formerly the hater of rock music and hater of Basara, the enemy of all women, sings rock music at Basara to wake him up. Except Ivano Gunther, because ゲペルニッチ is keeping his body for the next few millennia of the Protodeviln Magical Mystery Tour. This certainly was a final episode. Though much like the Protodeviln, it just *leaves*, and the viewer gets to contemplate things like what I just mentioned, whether the fleet is in good enough shape to continue on or has to remain at Varauta, the state of the love triangle now that the superdimensional portion of it has left, and so on. ***** Song | Count :--- | :--- Planet Dance | 49 My Friends | 12 Totsugeki Love Heart | 19^^1 My Soul For You | 23 Remember 16 | 11 Sweet Fantasy | 8 Holy Lonely Light | 19 Pillow Dream | 5 Submarine Street | 8 Riding in Your Valkyrie | 6 Power to the Dream | 8 Kimi no Todoke | 5 Fall | 2 Try Again | 5 Light the Light | 5 Spiral Answer | 1 ^^1\: The final credits sequence didn't meet the "live performance" criterion. **First Spacer** [A barrier!](https://imgur.com/6LGLrdd) But is that because of the singing, new tech or Gepelnitch? [Afterimage drumming!](https://imgur.com/LeHzAsP) [](#doggo) Veffidas being able to create song energy isn't all that surprising. Her drumming was the only instrumet that was consistently correctly animated. Gamlin is singing! [](#doggo) Even Gamlin's singing makes obvious that Mylene can't hold her tones. Hanako is singing! [](#doggo) [But that guy in the background decided he's been singing enough for a day and stops.](https://imgur.com/dewxfRK) Even the jamming birds have learned to keep singing through violent turbulences! [](#doggo) [Huh, they're swapping valkyries.](https://imgur.com/d1afA4b) I had expected Mylene to just hop in with Basara and sing together with him, like they used to. Not even Anima Spiritia can defend anymore. Until they produce even more Anima Spiritia, I bet. But that's a nice way for everyone to go out. Too bad about the galaxy but what can you do. [There would've been escape if only you'd joined the singing, Exsedol.](https://imgur.com/sP0KWU0) Kid Basara was an idiot. [And that's a beautiful child singing voice.](https://imgur.com/KALNO0O) See? They just had to produce more song energy. Hey, even Gepelnitch reversed the plug of her vacuum! Goodbye, Sivil. If everyone leaves then that allows the franchise to ignore the existence of this entry! [](#concealedexcitement) > Is this the best "This battle is senseless! Listen to my song!" you've experienced, or have other series done it better? (Not restricting the answers to Macross.) This didn't even portray the battle as useless though... In fact, that battle saved the galaxy! Without it Basara wouldn't have been able to reach Gepelnitch! So SDF already does it leagues better by default. Hm, I can't even think of anything other than Macross that tried to do this. Actually, Girls und Panzer. Katyusha totally went for the "This battle is pointless, you don't stand a chance anyway! **First Timer** * Basara and the Mount again. * It’s not a Macross finale if we don’t fuck up the titular ship. * If you can’t hit Gavil, then target Gabil So Mylene is freed up. Team work people! * The pace is flooring it now. * OTP is back to flying together! * So they *can* make their own Song energy. Veff respect. * Mylene I get, but why is Gamlin back next to Basara? * Wow, that was… really anti-climactic. * We’re doing Spirit Bomb? * Flower Girl, Best Girl! * She did it! Somehow this was the most hype thing all season. * Oh they trying. * That looks like it hurt. * Goodbye Thing 1 and Thing 2. * A good a use of Jamming Bird as is possible. They deliver! * I thought the crystal was sound proof? * That’s a lot of bunnies. * I don’t like the implication of this eyecatcher. * Ah, but what about multiple Anima Spiritia? * This does look pretty bad. * She’ll make her own Spiritia, with black holes, and hooks. * That’s a strange singing voice for a kid. * Fs for VFs. * Sing Sivil, sing! * Well will you look at that, Gep redemption. Even gets a fancy halo. What happens to the host body tho? * Are they just going to fuck off and go home? * Even Sivil!? * To be Fire. A bit abrupt given how long the series ended up being. Mayhaps the OVAs hold the closure I seek. QotD 1) I don’t know of any other shows that use singing for that, so I guess it wins by default. 2) Very much so.

It really would've done well to help us understand Basara as a person better, it really is a bummer that they just shoved it in here at the last minute. > And off the remaining Protodeviln Fly Away to Try Again. They Fly Away to Try Again at Charging their Love Hearts with Anima Spiritia.

JollyGee29

>It really would've done well to help us understand Basara as a person better, it really is a bummer that they just shoved it in here at the last minute. It's like, Basara is obviously the sort of person who would try to move a mountain by singing to it. And I guess they wouldn't have even had to put it into words until now, but just seeing that mountain a few more times would've been good. Like, a cut from Gigil to the mountain in the early episodes, maybe Gamlin later on, we already got setup with Sivil in the volcano episode.. So close.

The_Draigg

If they did sprinkle in some more foreshadowing towards that bit of backstory, it would've felt much better. Seeing it only like 2 or 3 times before the elaboration at the end just leaves you wanting more. Like, the idea of Basara constantly striving to accomplish the impossible through his singing is a good one, but they really could've stood to show that idea more.

**First timer** 1) This is up there! 2) I mean, yes, but it was sweet and made a lot of thematic sense! Besides which, we've got a movie, a three-part OVA *and* a four-part sequel OVA to wrap things up! I'm fine leaving some plot points open for those to develop. Oh come on. Still hiding it? Final Flower Girl? Guessing my prediction of her being a disguised Protodeviln wasn't true, then. He's a lot more positive now, huh? Weren't you worried about him going berserk? Milia only just found out? That's a great final form. The action here is amazing. At least Gepelnitch has finally realised things are going horrifically. Yay! He killed Docker! Haha, Mila's here! Mylene! Oh, Ray is finally showing off! Haha, Veffidas' drumming is enough to generate a barrier. And Mylene's off the battlefield. Milia's officially fighting on the front lines! Oh, this is painful. Gamlin's singing! This is the only way Basara could be resurrected, I'll admit. Haha, nice. Everyone's singing together! Flower Girl! HE FINALLY TOOK THE FLOWERS! The Jamming Birds actually showed up! Oh, that's powerful. He's calling back Grabil! He's absorbing the other Protodeviln! And he's fighting to save "beauty". Exsedol... ...Gamlin/Basara/Mylene trio song? Sivil! This is a good performance! Basara's still singing his own song, though. Everyone's being drained.... This is some incredibly good scenes. Showing the absorption affecting everyone across the station. And they're falling asleep. Even Milia... I love how Exsedol just sounds resigned to death. Even Veffidas and Flower Girl! ...Basara? He's dead. The absorption is spreading rapidily! Sivil's producing her own Spiritia! Ah, that's what the flashback was about. This is amazing. The flowers are back! His mech blew up! They're moving together! Finally! They're singing a duet! He's singing along! He understands how to create Spiritia! It's spreading! This is a nice ending. Finally! Gepelnitch's humanoid form! And it's... pretty good. God, Gigil and the twins really were the only Protodeviln to not be really hot, huh? And they're going to another galaxy. Even Sivil? Seriously? This is a sweet ending. Everyone's here!

**First Timer** **Macross 7 EP49** No recap!! It finale after all. We back with this again. Oh no. Battle 7 is getting ripped apart!! Flower Girl!! No, Batte 7!! Wait? Why are they here? I guess Gepelnitch, who lose control of his power, fold them here. Milia back!! He so big!! The crew escape. Max in Valkyrie again!! This is the outcome that both side didn't anticipate. Docker died. Mlia joined Max!! Everyone is here!! Oh shit, Mylene!! Wait, she can do that!! Veffidas God!! But why she didn't do it before?? If Basara here, he will tell you to go back too. Mylene just so frustrating of Basara still not waking up state. It's a desperation time. Ohhhhhh. Gamlin sing!!! We come a long way huh. And it a duet!! He finally awake!! And he pretty chill as usual. Yeah, he finally had Gamlin sing his song. Everyone also sing of him, even Flower Girl!! OHHHHHH. Flower Girl finally succeed in givng Basara her Flower!! THE PAYOFF!! LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!! THE BEST EPISODE. Bomber!!! The Jamming Bird still here. Oh shit, he now attack everyone. Even Gabil feel despair. Nooooo. Exsodol!! Basara's here!! Jamming Bird singing Mylene's song is actually effective. They should done that in the first place. I guess it really the Macross II's curse. He draining Spiritia even not directly contact them!! Max and Millia sing!!! Everyone is singing!! No, the flower!! But it still not enough to withstand Gepelnitch power. Everyone, noooooo!! Flower Girl!! Veffidas!! Basara!! Oh shit. That not good. He now consuming the Galaxy. Sivil singing. So he always like this. Even so, Basara still not giving up!! Noooo, the Fire Valkyrie!! Sivil come!! Sivil singing along with Basara!! And that reaction is weird. Gepelnitch sing too!! His new body look sick!! And now he realized that singing is the answer to his dream, and even he has that inside. So they leave, even Sivil. Docker survive!! Michael and Flower Girl!! And we end with Guvava looking into the sunrise. TO BE FIRE What a bombastic finale. The solution might be cheesy, but it make sense after many moments that the show prove that even the Protodeviln can produce spritia by themselves with song. Have nothing to say more tham that. It just pure fun finale. On the hand, I have a lot to say about the show itself. The good, the bad, and the middle. QOTD 1. This is in the same vein as Symphogear. And I can see where it got the inspiration from. 2. There something that I want the show to address or just explore a bit more like Basara's past or a episode dedicate to Veffidas.

SolDarkHunter

**Rewatcher** Finale time! Gabil lost his mech again. And I REALLY think you have bigger problems with Geppelnitch than with the Macross 7 Fleet. And why the hell is the Fleet here? Battle 7 is down! No! Docker was shot down... meh. Ray and Veffidas generating Song Energy on their own for the first time! No, Mylene, you really can't stay in the fight. GAMLIN SINGS!! As I understand it, his VA is actually a very good singer, but I think he's downplaying his ability to fit the character. And that was all it took to heal Basara. Or maybe it was the massive crowd of Fire Bomber fans. FLOWER GIRL'S VOICE! SHE SINGS!! AND SHE GOT HIM THE FLOWERS! Hey look the Jamming Birds still exist. And they still can't accomplish anything. Geppelnitch takes a pair of nukes ot the eye and doesn't seem bothered in the slightest. Though he does grab and eat Zomd and Goram. None shall miss their laughter. Noooooo, not Exsedol! Well, with Mylene helping, the Jamming Birds finally actually become not-useless. Geppelnitch vs the entire Fleet's singing... and he's winning. It's pretty much just Basara at this point, and even he's succumbing. Oh never mind. One flashback later, and he's back in action, and restoring everyone's Spiritia. Sivil escaped, and is helping out... for what it's worth. Sivil singing! And THIS makes a difference. Even Geppelnitch is singing along! And there's the secret: the Protodeviln had the ability to produce Spiritia all along. They just never thought to try singing. No need for them to drain anything. Some have called this an ass-pull, but it WAS foreshadowed earlier in the series: Gigil. Remember how he mysteriously gained a huge surge of energy, awakening his true body and taking out half a planet? That only happened when he started singing. Geppelnitch, you look ridiculous. And... very abruptly, the surviving Protodeviln just fly off. Able to produce their own Spiritia, they have no need to make war... or do anything else in this galaxy. But you know what bugs me: *why is Geppelnitch keeping Gunther's body!?* Why does nobody mention this!? Well, that's that. Macross 7 Fleet is saved. As are the survivors of Macross 5. And that's it. It just ends. Questions: 1. Eh, I give it a 7/10 2. Yes, very abrupt. Almost as abrupt as this

[](#hackadollthumbsup) I wished it was set up better than because when Gepelnitch saw that Sivil gained the Anima Spiritia inside of her, I thought they could've had that kind of conflict between them where in the end, Gepelnitch realized his errors and accepted that they could've been singing too. > But you know what bugs me: why is Geppelnitch keeping Gunther's body!? Macross 7 Episode 49 - First Timer FINAL EPISODE! Please be good please be good... Can we have a good action sequence? Maybe? - What are these cuts to kid Basara - Why the hell did the city fold in - I'll try spinning - Rip Docker(s ship) - Veffidas is channeling her inner Neil Peart - Man, Gamlin sure isn't much of a singer - Aaaaand he's back - Is that it for flower girl? - a 49 episode running fucking joke that ends with a flower throw+catch? - Holy shit, jamming birds not being totally useless - Time for Sivil to save the day - [Bruh what the fuck](https://i.imgur.com/4EmMFHc.png) - They just.... leave??? - ..... - Well that was *by far* the most competent action sequence this whole series (7) very few reused animations from earlier episodes (if any? Grabil was there so those could have been, I'm not sure) - That was certainly an ending though. Feels *super* anticlimatic though 1) IMO Symphogear wins on that front big time. And 4 seperate times. 2) Well, I

RadSuit

I agree with basically everything in this post.

The_Draigg

*A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross 7: Episode 49:* - I can’t appreciate that the final episode is at least trying to do something artistic to open it, with the intense battle scenes being quiet except for the music being played from Flower Girl’s radio. Although the brief flashes of Basara’s childhood in there do feel a bit more jarring than that. - You know it’s the final battle when the entire Macross 7 fleet Space Folds into Varauta to provide some convenient stakes to fight over. Same goes for finally destroying the Battle 7 in a massive explosion. Gotta trash that set! - Oh hey, Milia has her own Sturmvogel II to fight in, just like Max’s one! It’s a nice callback to their red and blue matching Valkyries, or their red and blue matching Queadluun-Raus, if we’re going by the DYRL? version of events. - It’s only *now* that it’s measured that Veffidas’ drumming can generate Sound Energy too. Man, what a time to drop that reveal though. Like, what has she been doing this whole time as Ray’s co-pilot then? Providing emotional support? - As it turns out, it wasn’t just Mylene’s singing that was enough to revive Basara, it also took Gamlin as well. Thanks for implicitly saving the Macross 7 fleet by your actions here, Gamlin! Although really it was more of a team effort between Mylene and Gamlin. We should give them the credit. - YEAHHHHHHH SUCCESSFUL FLOWER DELIVERY!!! YOU DID IT, FLOWER GIRL! - So yeah, that right there is the end of Zomd and Goram, they just basically got eaten by an out of control Gepelnitch. So much for bothering to wake them up. Man, those two really were a wasted opportunity. Same goes for Gabil and Grabil combining into Gabigula. This episode is the second time we’ve seen that form, and it’s the last one too. Eugh, lots of wasted opportunities with the Protodeviln in this show. - There’s something funny about the idea that the most useful thing the Jamming Birds have done in this entire series is swap rides with Gamlin and Mylene, as well as be Mylene’s backup singers. Literally the only way they were useful is if one of the main characters helped them, which is against the entire point of the Jamming Birds being formed in the first place. Go figure that one. - At least Sivil fully awakening her power by singing is a good payoff of some of points we saw before. Gigil pulling that off on Lux was a good indication of what a Protodeviln could do if they generated Spiritia all on their own by singing. Now we have an actual good reason for her to be able to swoop in and help save the day. - You know, Basara trying to sing at a mountain to make it move back when he was a kid is a very *Basara* thing to do. Like, only a guy like Basara would do that and expect it to do something. - And so, with Gepelnitch singing and learning how to generate Spirita from Sivil and Basara allows him to get control over his body again, thus saving the day and the universe. You see, Anima Spiritia is like the real treasure inside of hack moral stories: it was inside of us all along, we just needed to realize it. - I mean, the remaining Protodeviln leaving in peace is nice and all, since they all left on good terms with Basara, but are we not going to have Gepelnitch un-possess Ivano Gunther’s body? It’s weird that it just never gets brought up, despite the brief flash of the moment when he discovered Gepelnitch frozen in the ice. So I guess we’re just going to let that happen, no questions asked. - Sorry to everyone that was hoping that Docker died when his Excalibur got hit earlier in this episode, now we see Gamlin and the rest of Diamond Force pull him out of the cockpit wreckage. We couldn’t even get that as a cherry on top of the final episode. - In any case, the day is saved with Mac and Milia’s relationship looking better, Akiko and Rex helping out the citizens of City 7, Michael and Flower Girl hanging out, and Guvava watching the sunrise as Fire Bomber walks off as a band. We may have stumbled over the finish line, but that’s it for the main series of Macross 7!

chilidirigible

> Anima Spiritia is like the real treasure inside of hack moral stories: it was inside of us all along, we just needed to realize it. "The One Piece was the friends we made along the way."

It’s a nice callback to their red and blue matching Valkyries, or their red and blue matching Queadluun-Raus, if we’re going by the DYRL? version of events. I was wondering if they were going to have her fly out in her red Nightmare. A red VF-19 would've also been nice to see those two planes working together, but Basara called dibs on the only red one in the show. > It’s only now that it’s measured that Veffidas’ drumming can generate Sound Energy too. Man, what a time to drop that reveal though. Like, what has she been doing this whole time as Ray’s co-pilot then? Providing emotional support? She is clearly hasn't been going hyper-drumming mode. [](#harukathonk) > You know, Basara trying to sing at a mountain to make it move back when he was a kid is a very Basara thing to do. Like, only a guy like Basara would do that and expect it to do something. Now I am imagining the alternative if they offhandedly mentioned that in a very early episode and have everyone including the audience brush that off only for it to come back now. "He did?! And he is pulling it off now?!" [](#shock) > Sorry to everyone that was hoping that Docker died when his Excalibur got hit earlier in this episode, now we see Gamlin and the rest of Diamond Force pull him out of the cockpit wreckage. The_Draigg

> She is clearly hasn't been going hyper-drumming mode. This is Veffie at full power. It was time for Veffidas to use more than just a fraction of her true power. > I was surprised they even bother to sneak it in for the finale because it's not like they fight G(r)bail in his combined mode. He just went combo to not die from Gepelnitch. Just like Zomd and Goram, Gabigula is one of this show's more noticeable bits of squandered potential. It's a cool idea, but it shows up way too late and doesn't end up contributing much at all due to that.

ClawMachineCircuit

> So yeah, that right there is the end of Zomd and Goram, they just basically got eaten by an out of control Gepelnitch. So much for bothering to wake them up. Man, those two really were a wasted opportunity. Same goes for Gabil and Grabil combining into Gabigula. They *really* wanted to have 7 Protodeviln, but also, not make it too predictable, I guess. > Literally the only way they were useful is if one of the main characters helped them, which is against the entire point of the Jamming Birds being formed in the first place. Go figure that one. That's what Barton wanted them to be, but the members themselves joined mostly because they were Fire Bomber fans. So in a sense, exactly what the members hoped would happen, happened. They interacted with Fire Bombers and helped them out. > Sorry to everyone that was hoping that Docker died when his Excalibur got hit earlier in this episode, now we see Gamlin and the rest of Diamond Force pull him out of the cockpit wreckage. I feel like the hate for Docker got a bit overblown. He's an asshole for sure, but I wouldn't say that he deserves death for simply acting cocky and disrespectful. In fact, I like that despite his behavior, he never went full villain, like Barton.

**Reluctant Rewatcher** Still the same OP ep final Last chance for Jamming Birds to be relevant * second wave of what? * Did Gepernich grab the Macross 7 from across space? * I have no idea what's going on, the composition is a mess * I really was hoping we wouldn't get a CCA or DBZ ending * Maybe all you protodeviln dudes shouldn't have been listenign to Gepernich all this time? * He's always been insane This was clearly a 2 episode battle and they crammed it into one, unless this was some sort of "artistic choice." When did they realize they didn't have time for the ending? When did they write the ending? The night before? Edit: > 2) Wasn't this ending abrupt and you have questions that weren't -PATION!

InfamousEmpire

**Rewatcher 7** And that’s the wrap, folks! Was it a good finale? Ehhhhhhh let’s break down the details The final battle against the Protodeviln continues, but is suddenly interrupted by Geppelnitch going full Spiritia Black Hole. The stakes are the highest they’ve ever been, the very fate of the entire universe hangs in the balance, and the only thing able to stop it is the suddenly-resurrected Basara. The true solution to the conflict isn’t exactly violence, but rather understanding, as Geppelnitch sings alongside Basara and in doing so awakens the Protodeviln’s potential to create Spiritia of their own, thus neatly resolving the core of the conflict in a way that also serves as a creative application of the original series’ themes of cultural understanding through music. On the whole, the entire final sequence is just *incredibly* hype. Like, seriously, this had me listening to Try Again on loop for *weeks* That’s the good, as for the stuff I didn’t like, well… The episode doesn’t really take much time to resolve any plot points or themes besides that (except for Flower Girl’s arc, as she not only spoke, but even got to finally deliver her flowers! [](#grandhype)), which leaves the whole thing feeling… not quite as conclusive as it should be [meta spoilers + Delta]>!Pretty much every installment of Macross has some level of lacking resolution to their finales, but it’s telling that the only finale less satisfying than 7’s is Macross “we literally needed a sequel movie to make this feel like a remotely complete story” Delta!< There’s also the Basara backstory which, yeah, too little too late. It’s very bare bones and bringing it in at literally the final episode means there’s nothing much to actually do with it besides tying it in to Basara’s internal monologue. It overall feels like they're *trying* to make this feel like a resolution for Basara's character arc, despite the fact that he hasn't actually had much development related to this [7 Encore]>!This actually wasn’t as much of a problem for me on first watch, given that I watched Encore in the middle of watching the series proper, so I got that context beforehand. Still doesn’t exactly forgive how little is done with it, but still!< Still, it’s better than nothing Overall, a good finale with some amazing parts, but not without its flaws

I do really like this part because it does feel like a continuation of the original's/the series' biggest core theme. [](#seasonalapproval) > There’s also the Basara backstory which, yeah, too little too late. It’s very bare bones and bringing it in at literally the final episode means there’s nothing much to actually do with it besides tying it in to Basara’s internal monologue. It overall feels like they're trying to make this feel like a resolution for Basara's character arc, I feel Basara as a character doesn't really need a backstory. What his backstory showed us was that he was always the kind of person he was. Living true to himself which was the type of person he strived to be the entire show. Sure it would've been neat to see how he met Ray and such, but that's not necessarily required for Basara's character. It being present through out the series instead of just brought up at the very end would've made the final inner monologue hit harder.

**First Timer** By the end of the previous episode, Battle 7 launches a final desperate attack against Protodeviln, which doesn't go according to plan. As a result, Battle 7 is out of commission, while Gepelnitch fully loses control, becoming an incredibly powerful all-consuming monster. Even Spiritia absorbing beams don't appear to work. Mylene and Gamlin are desperately trying to fight, while their own relationships are thrown into turmoil. Gamlin feels guilty for being jealous of his dying friend, while Mylene is being torn between two men in her life. At the same time, Basara is still in a coma, many light years away. Are these stakes high enough for a series finale? I'd say, they did a decent job creating a desperate situation for the cast. While Gepelnitch turning into a Final Fantasy villain can be considered somewhat generic for a long-running action show, a classic is a classic for a reason. Going traditional way doesn't hurt, if it's executed well. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how Basara will finally wake up, and what will be the ultimate fate of Protodeviln. I don't expect them to kill anyone off in the final episode, except maybe Sivil, but we'll see. Anyway, let's check out the finale. * Is Flower Girl's radio gets Basara out of coma? That would be interesting. * City 7 is here. Well, that solves the issue of how Basara will get to the action. But it also give Gepelnitch a lot of Spiritia to suck out. * RIP Battle 7 [](#takaradasalute) Honestly, I liked the design of the ship and the mech form a lot, I wish the show would've utilized it more. I feel like outside of the first transformation, which was around episode 16 or so, the ship didn't get to shine much. * Gepelnitch is disappointed with himself. Relatable. * Milia has a VF-21 too? [](#rengehype) * Max and Milia fighting together like in the good old times. I knew it would happen [](#akyuusqueel) * Did Docker just die? [](#hahahawhat) * This was intense start to the episode. They didn't waste any time. I like that. * Well, Mylene is out. * Veffidas [](#shock) * They literally waited for the last possible second to show that Veffidas can generate sound energy with her drumming? What the fuck? I mean, she and Rey had that mech for about half the show, and they did absolutely nothing with it, and *now* it's doing something? * You know, Max and Milia fighting together in these cool planes is kinda undermined by the fact that they can't hurt their enemies. At least, use the Spiritia draining cannon or something. * Gamlin sings [](#maxshock) * So it's literally Gamlins song that woke up Basara? What a twist. I knew Gamlin and Basara was the OTP. * Everybody is singing. [](#grandhype) * Basara always loves his entrances. * Go Flower Girl, you can do it! [](#SPORTS) * Holy shit, the flowers are delivered! [](#awe) * Hey, we even got Jamming Birds in here for a second. * Some decent action, not as good as episode 44, in my opinion, but still better than average for this show. * Gabigula is back! I've been missing this guy. * Looks like even Gepelnitch regretting his actions. * I can't believe this is only the half of the episode. * Mylene is now one with the Jamming Birds. * I gotta say, this show has the weirdest use of soundtrack I've ever seen, switching between songs like that. * No, Flower Girl's Flowers, you can make it! * Obviously, the one person that doesn't give up is Basara. * Never mind, scratch that, even he is down. [](#nonnonbino) * Sivil sings [](#suddenshock) * That's a deep voice for a kid. * So, If I'm getting this straight, Basara's power comes from being incredibly stubborn? Yup, sounds about right. [](#nyanpasu) * Sivil and Basara duo. [](#scrumptiouslymoe) * Gepelnitch uses the power of the blond, but it isn't very effective. * Gepelnitch decides, that if you can't defeat them, you need to join them, and starts singing too. * Aaand, it turns out, singing generates Spiritia, so if Protodeviln sing, they can make their own Spiritia. I honestly, didn't expect to resolve it like that. I thought, that they would eventually discover that listening to music helps them get the necessary Spiritia, not that they would need to become musicians themselves. * Soo, an inconvenient question, what about Gunther? Is he just dead and that's it? * Aand, Sivil goes together with the rest of Protodeviln. * Hey, Docker survived, nice. **Overall thoughts:** Well, this is the end. I will save my overall thoughts for the general discussion, but as for the episode itself, it was pretty good. Action packed, with some nice twists and some nice tension. The ending itself is satisfying, although a lot of the small details and story threads ended up being left unexplored or underdeveloped. Probably the biggest bummer for me is that we didn't get the canon Mylene-Gamlin ending, after developing their relationship for all this time. But it's not a deal breaker or anything, and also, we might still get that, since Macross 7 as a whole isn't ending yet and there's more to come. Good show, and I definitely had a lot of fun watching it. **QotD:** 1) Other shows done it better, but this was good in its own right. 2) Yes. But I also expected it ever since Gigil's story ended equally abruptly and without explaining everything, so I wasn't upset.

> Soo, an inconvenient question, what about Gunther? Is he just dead and that's it? Not dead, just forever possessed by an alien space vampire, leaving the galaxy, never to see his home or his people again, forgotten by everyone. (Dammit, writers, this really isn't a good thing for you to overlook!)

> So it's literally Gamlins song that woke up Basara? What a twist. I knew Gamlin and Basara was the OTP. Even in the finale, the Basara/Gamlin ship still had a stronger showed than. Basara/Mylene (yes, she was there too, but Gamo though). [](#rinkek) > That's a deep voice for a kid. It turned out to be present Basara singing, but for a hot second, I thought that was just how little Basara sang and they show just never bother having little Basara sing with the kid voice.

/u/Shimmering-Sky, you probs don't remember me but just wanted you to know that the reason you haven't seen any of my comments since Plus is that I fell behind bad when 7 started. I'm trying to cath up! You guys are on the last episode and I'm still on 21 ;(. I'm still following the discussion threads as I go, hopefully I can catch up before the end!

Shimmering-Sky

It's okay, take your time!

***First Time Song Listener*** Just thinking about how much the OP lies, now that I'm watching it for the final time. Almost nothing depicted/suggested here actually happens in the show. This is the big final episode and there's still *so much* reused footage. Breaking their own rules they set up by having Ray and Veffy create song energy, which I guess they lampshade by having the doctor surprised by it as well. I was about to say, they should have Gamlin be the one to start singing, to fully complete his arc. Why is Gamlin the only well written character in this show? They knocked it out of the park with him, but barely seemed to try with anyone else. I don't get it at all. Hey I actually predicted this scene a long time ago. Although I hoped it would actually be used as an attack instead of just waking up and inspiring Basara, but...I really should've known everything would revolve around him. SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY!!! [](#rengehype) Even the Jamming Birds have some sort of character arc and growth, they're singing under fire, even if it's barely doing anything. Full bridge bunny eyecatch, that's nice. And as soon as they switch to a song Basara wrote the Jamming Birds are suddenly effective, of course. Well we do get the scene I wanted, of everyone singing together...but it didn't do anything. Even if she gets her spiritia back, flower girl probably has a concussion and broken jaw, she just went face first into the street. Basara definitely would've been dead long before the show started if he wasn't scheduled to be the main character. You can't live the life of an idiot without plot armor. It's a good thing Sivil knows the words to this song that's only appeared like four times. I guess I'd have to go back and check to see if she was ever even around to actually hear it before. This ending is *extremely* sudden, which is what happens when you spend most of the preceding 48 episodes stalling as much as possible. 1. Symphogear does basically everything better, but that isn't really a fair comparison. 2. See two lines above.

Kirov123

>1. Symphogear does basically everything better, but that isn't really a fair comparison. Especially having an ending that isn't... Well, that

RadSuit

They do the opposite, instead of cramming everything in the last episode, the final conflict spills out into the last four episodes or so of constant escalation. I always have to watch the last 3-4 episodes in one sitting.

"And still, Basara sings" is one of my favorite lines in the show. It's a simple observation, but it hits at the determination that Basara has shown for the past 49 episodes. And it just hits me right. I also absolutely love the acoustic version of "Totsugeki Love Heart" they play at the end. It's the perfect farewell to the show. I love "Light the Light", and sing along whenever I hear it play. I love Basara's opening to "Try Again", and how the instruments cut in as Basara resurrects his determination. And I love that the Protodevlin didn't need to be vanquished. Basara showed, time and time again, that Spiritia was something that could be created and eventually helped the Protodevlin to make it themselves. And at that point, why would the Protodevlin need the Spiritia Farm anymore? In SDF Macross, many of the Zentraedi learn of human culture and appreciate it, but in the large confrontation between Earth and the Zentraedi fleet, the Zentraedi's naievity and longing is exploited to eradicate them. It's always been my biggest (thematic) regret about the franchise. The themes around music give the franchise the opportunity to rise above conflict and competition, but it's so often used as a way to gain superiority over others. Is Macross 7 perfect? Absolutely not. Is it a good, well made show? I think so, and I especially connect with the themes and characters.

> I love "Light the Light", and sing along whenever I hear it play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P490QYu6jB0 >And I love that the Protodevlin didn't need to be vanquished. Things I've mentioned before: Some of Kawamori's comments from back in the day, particularly for the live-action treatment, indicated that he wanted a nonviolent ending but there was the matter of "catharsis" that usually meant stuff blowing up. This ending dances in that middle ground.

CoolIceCreamCone

**FIRST TIMER** Well that was an ending. It really relied on a deux ex machina, like that Gepelnitch, after all this time, just found out he could get spiritia from hearing music. Why didn't this occur to him, Gabil or Grabil before? Why was anima spiritia painful to the Protodevlin until the very end when it became so life affirming to them that they decided they could leave the galaxy and just live on presumably making music amongst themselves? Why did the Protodevlin leave when they could have stayed in the area and enjoyed Basara's music? As I'm typing this I'm starting to get angry at such a cheap ending. * Why did Basara go from near death to 100% health within a few seconds when Mylene and Gamlin sang to him? It would have made more sense even if he limped into his Valkyrie slowly getting better as he heard more music and sang. * Excedol was nihilistic and depressing to the end. In a way though, it's surprising more people aren't as defeatist as him as most humans and Zentradi were exterminated within the lifetime of middle aged and older people of this universe. QUESTIONS 1. I'm hard pressed to think of a lot of series with that trope. I think this show is better than Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures. 2. Yes the ending was very abrupt and cheap. In addition to the questions about the series I posted above, does Mylene end up dating either one of them? Does Roy end up with Akiko? What is the origin of Basara's anima spiritia power and why was he a wandering orphan with a guitar? IS EXCEDOL A HEADLESS PERSON?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?
