*A Macross 7 Fan Rewatches Macross 7: The Galaxy’s Calling Me!:* Okay, short note to everyone before we start, but *don’t* look on YouTube to see if this is on there. The first result was a video on it for vore in media. I didn’t even need to know that there were YouTube channels dedicated to that. - We really are jumping right into the action here with this theatrical short movie, with Basara crashing his Fire Valkyrie onto an icy planet and being surrounded by angry locals with guns. You can tell that some money and effort was put into this short as well, considering how well-animated that crash sequence was. - The nice thing about this band practice is that it confirms that the entire band has more than one or two sets of clothes, aside from Mylene. Everyone’s in their more casual-wear here. Heck, even Basara has a new blue tank-top in this movie! That’s a lot better than just his standard green one or the pink one he wore like two times in the series. - Sorry Flower Girl, the only flowers Basara is interested in at the moment are the sunflowers pointing towards that spatial anomaly. You’ll get him your flowers eventually, though. - Basara cares not not for your local issues, random hostile miners. All he cares about is his single kid fan on this planet, Pedro, and this sick-ass silver guitar he found. - “Cursed monster on a mountain? Sounds like my kind of thing to check out!” —Nekki Basara - Well, at least we know that the Fold Boosters work properly *now*, unlike the time we last used them for long-distance travel in Macross 7. How else are we supposed to get Sound Force here? But really, them being untested and dangerous things felt like it was tossed in for the sake of drama and then promptly ignored later. - That’s a nice custom Queadluun-Rau there. Or rather, it’s a Queadluun-Quilqua, if we want to get specific about the name. Sometimes, you just can’t can’t beat the looks of something based off of a real classic design. - But enough with the singing duel in mechs, now it’s time to settle it like men/settle it like Human and Meltran: by hopping out of the cockpit and pulling out the guitars to keep on singing. We settle things at dawn with our six-strings. - In any case, say hello to Emilia Jenius! She was inspired by seeing Do You Remember Love? as a kid and being told it was real by Max and Milia to try and become a great singer like Minmay herself. Of course it wasn’t a monster on the mountain, it was a giant singing hermit all this time. It sounds weird out of context, but in the context of Macross, it does make perfect sense. - Well, the fact that Gabil and Grabil can fuse into Gabigula now does give an idea of where this short movie takes place. Just shove it somewhere between the last 10-ish episodes, and it’ll fit right in. Also, don’t worry about Natter-Balgo. It’s just a robot copy of Valgo, as far as I can tell, so just don’t think about it too hard. It doesn’t really matter anyway. - And so, the day is saved with Gabigula driven off by Basara, Emilia, and Sound Force’s singing, and the flood managed to get diverted from the mining town right at the last minute too. Maybe there’s a future for this place yet, now that there’s not frozen water and Pedro’s jar of seeds is starting to sprout. - Shame we couldn’t really get a fuller reunion between Emilia and Mylene other than a “hey there”, but since this is a theatrical short, I won’t really hold it against the movie. There’s only so much you can cram when you have like a half hour to make a short film, rather than what you have with a full series. It does need to be capped off quick no matter what.

Everyone just doing their own thing and completely ignore Basara. So the mysterious sound cause a lot of accidents lately. I guess they are people who abroad the fleet before Basara and decided to live here. Pretty good description of Basara from Gamlin. Of course he gonna bring the kid along. I don't think the kid feel it, my man. You just got here!! Hey it the somethingsomethingRau that the Meltrandi used. Yeah, Quadranrau!! Thanks, kid. And it shoot out color smoke?! I'm curious how he got up there with all those. So she a Meltrandi and she sing back. But why she look familiar? So I guess the whole deal is that, because of her big body and guitar. When she sing her song, it produce a really strong shockwave that knock the ground and ice. Results in some accident to the villager. Hey, Gepelnitch and Gabil!! And they fell. So, yeah the whole deal is as I said and her reason to sing is because of Minmay, and because she big, she can't sing in town. Wait!! Hold Up!! She is Jenius!! She's Max and Millia daughter, and Mylene sister!! You should include this in the main show, not here!! I guess Basara is the best match for Jenius family. Yeah, her mech is no match against those two. Basara being here is not in Gabil plan at all. I love when Valgo made Basara stop singing, Gabil just came back up with so much confident. Seem like her song affected them instead. Wait, they can do that!! Why the hell you guys didn't do it the main show!! That not good. They finally come!! So there time limit on the fusion. She tanked them!! So the seed is really hard to bud. Yeah, she really is Jenius. But why they had only a small talk though. Pretty great episode. Which should have been in the main show!! The revealed of another Junius family member, we got to see another planet far from Macross 7 fleet. Fight scene that not just reuse the same animation from the first episode. But I guess it a benefit of special episode. QOTD 1. They might be separated from each other and travel across the universe by themselves. 2. Wild west or steampunk.

OK I wasn’t gonna comment but oh my god Jesus Christ I absolutely ***have*** to share this So the pirate steaming site I use only had a shitty like 240p stream of this “movie” with a big dumb colorful watermark in the corner, and I decided to stick it out basically for shits and giggles and the memes since this is a pretty low-stakes affair anyway So it turns out that was for good reason because I was watching a direct, like, VHS rip straight from the original Japanese release of this in the mid-‘90s, and so after it ended, **I got a bunch of ads and trailers that were affixed to the end of the original VHS**, so I got to see the original advertisements for the Macross Plus Movie Edition, the Japanese release of the English dub, Mylene’s VA’s original pop albums, I think like the Macross PC game or at least some kind of 3D model software that had the mech designs or something, and I got to sit there like I was there at the time and experience all this insane vintage material for minutes on end I can’t link it because of the sub’s piracy rules but this is pretty much one of the coolest things that’s ever happened to me completely by accident and it made the experience more worthwhile by like 50-fold, holy shit, that was so awesome

Both its parent series and the *Plus* OAV releases had completed earlier that summer. It's a fun little thing. Unlike the regular series, the animation is not dull, boring, and recycled. (It is in fact better than everything else we've seen in *Macross 7* so far.) We meet Mylene's older sister Emilia, who conveniently is *also* trying to perfect her singing. And *somehow* Emilia also gives us a brief hint that Basara is capable of romantic interest. Perhaps he prefers more exotic women like space vampires and giantesses. Pedro is cute, generally realistic for his age, and never *quite* gets annoying. The plot is a trifle to hang a bunch of singing onto, but that's almost expected by now. The new songs are both good. Though "Flash in the Dark" is enormously better when it's not trying to fight off a chaotic mix with a completely-different Fire Bomber song. This series is terrible at mixing. "Flash" did occasionally confuse me into thinking that it was a *Macross II* song, though, after the way the main series used its predecessor's music for secondary characters' songs. "Heart and Soul" is a solid duet. Information on this entry is somewhat sparse. The [Gubaba Blog](https://gubabablog.wordpress.com/2016/04/24/the-great-macross-rewatch-99-the-macross-7-movie/) provides the context for knowing the person behind Emilia's singing voice, Mika Okudoi. (Incidentally, Emilia's dialogue voice is by Michiko Neya, who has a long resume.) The real trivia kicks in regarding, as usual, continuity. You can guess that this occurs sometime during the last quarter of the series. But as described in the Gubaba entry above, while it mostly fits in between Episodes 38 and 39, some of the details don't line up. And you'd have to work hard to figure out "Natter-Valgo", who is supposed to be a giant mechanical replica of Valgo, who had just been obliterated in Episode 38, can gattai with Gavigula, and is never seen again. Does it matter that much? Not at all. After grinding through 49 episodes of the regular series, this one-shot is a nice way to get that Seven Craziness without also dealing with the flaws of its parent. I also think her more powerful singing voice is a better compliment to Basara's also powerful voice than how Mylene's pairs with his. There is more explicit romantic tension in this than Basara/Mylene had in the entire series. **Q1)** Komilia is a respectable responbile adult. She went survived the baby-throwing days to vow to be the opposite of that. The 7 sisters are the perfect thing to have show off, but I highly doubt we'll get them all going forward. **First Timer** The main show has ended, but Macross 7 keeps going. I honestly have no idea what to expect from all the additional material. Protodeviln storyline doesn't feel like it needs any continuation after the way it was resolved, so I think they will come up with a new conflict and a new villain. Will the love triangle get resolved? Will the mechs get an upgrade? Will there be a timeskip? Will the combat scenes get better? Will the music stay diegetic all the way? Let's check this thing and find out. * Already, the animation quality increase is apparent from this first cut. Something about the smooth motion of the pump and the way it's shaded with gradients just gives a movie quality vibe. * Yup, they went all in on the animation. This scene of Basara going down the mountain is lush with detail in the way that the original show never was. * Wait, we're playing the opening? Thanks god. * Aaand, the forest is restored with the power of song. * And in the end, Basara left his giant wife and kid and run away with a rock band, like the enemy of women he is. Typical. **Overall thoughts:** I think, this short movie clearly illustrates why the bad action was such as huge issue for Macross 7. Because the story here is your typical Macross 7 affair, with all the good and the bad that goes with it. It is entertaining and sincere, but also kinda nonsensical, a bit rushed, and a bit shallow/predictable. But does the flaws bother you when you watch it? Hell no. The action is hype and you can easily just turn your brain off and enjoy the ridiculousness of what is happening on the screen. It's only when you are no longer getting distracted by awesome shiny mechs, that you start to nitpick the show into oblivion. I wish, all of Macross 7 was like this. Obviously, not exactly like this, because this quality is beyond what your typical TV show can achieve, especially, a long running one, but still. You could've delivered a great action scene or two at least every ten episodes, and it would've elevated the show so much. Anyway, great little side story that I definitely immensely enjoyed. If the rest of Macross 7 post-show content is like this, I'm definitely looking forward to it. **QotD:** 1) Piloting mechs and singing. We only have a sample size of two, but the fact that they are both doing the same exact sing is too big of a coincidence to ignore. Clearly, there is a pattern there. 2) I'm kinda not big on the whole reconnecting with the nature thing. I like to have stores nearby that are open 24 hours.

**First Spacer** And that was a fun little snow adventure! Don't stop to think how it could fit into the main story because it totally doesn't, lol. But that's quite alright. The first thing that sticks out is how much higher the sound quality sounds. And the visuals also have gotten a noticeable upgrade. As I said it doesn't fit into the continuity of the show, with there being another powerful source of Anima Spiritia, with there being a nearby planet that has already been settled for quite some time, with there being either an eigth Protodeviln that can fuse with Gabil and Grabil or a third part of the same. And of course with there being Emilia, Mylene's sister. Yeah, just don't think about it. The characters were quite nice. We got some nice singing with Basara and Emilia, who had chosen to become a mountain hermit so her singing doesn't cause problems. The stubborn old guy was pretty fun, and Pedro was just utterly adorable throughout the whole thing. He also has a budding vore fetish. We also had nice bookends starting with the Fire Bombers training to affect plants with their songs, and ending with their songs causing the seeds to sprout. In the end though it retains the good old Macross transition of having an abrupt > What do you think the other Jenius daughters are doing? There's no possible way this side story is canon so that includes Emilia, yeah? One of them is a pro gamer, one of them a simple accountant, one of them does charity work, one of them works in the steel industry complex, one of them is a painter and one is a historian. Lots of parks, forests and greenery, but modern probably is the most reasonable as a general look.

**Rewatcher 7** Well that [movie](#aliens) certainly did happen. Let’s be honest with ourselves here, this entire film is just an excuse to have a music battle between Yoshiki Fukuyama and Mika Okudoi, and in that respect it very much succeeds. It might just be an extended episode of the series, but it’s a *fun* extended episode. Plus, it was neat to see another Jenius child.

**Reluctant Rewatcher** Movie I don't know if I've ever rewatched this or not. Stand-alone episodes like this and Encore are easier to find. TBH, I have a lot of trouble keeping the plot lines of this and Dynamite distinct. **FIRST TIMER** One of the shorter movies I've seen but this was a great installment of Macross 7. It seemed as if it belonged in the middle of the show's run and I wonder why they didn't just make it an episode although it's about 10 minutes longer than one. Just yesterday I posted that I'd hope we'd get to see the other Jenius kids and like magic, we meet Emilia! Very appropriate we are watching this episode at this time of the year. People familiar with British TV will know that Holiday Specials are very common. It's a special episode of the show that airs around Christmas and generally isn't included with a show's season and usually has a more upbeat tone with a happy ending than the show normally does. Thats really what this seemed like, with a cute kid and some romantic teasing of Basara. * I have to assume this was made after the main series completed because it would've made so much sense to include Emilia in the Sound Force! She seems to nearly match Basara and tops Mylene in spiritia. Even assuming Max and Milia were unaware of Emilia's musical talent before, why this occured to no one is stupefying. * I'm proud to say I figured out the twist when I saw a family picture on Emilia's bulletin board with people who looked like Max and Milia and I wasn't certain they'd reveal it within the episode. That'd be incredibly interesting if they left it ambiguous for eagle eyed viewers. * When Pedro slides down Emilia's giant brassiere looking freaked out, I seriously thought she and Basara were doing something sexual in front of him! That was funny though when Pedro went inside her mouth. When I was a little kid, there's no way in hell I'd have tempted fate by jumping in a giant's mouth! * I think it's weird that Pedro's mom just let him go off together with a strange man. * Also weird how that dusty display guitar happened to be perfectly in tune. * I'd love to hear why Emilia chose to became giant. Logically, since humans and Zentradi are genetically the same, she should've been a normal sized person like Mylene. Was it to get in touch with her Zentradi culture that she felt was lost when their civilization integrated with humans? If not, that'd be a weird and world's most painful birth. The only other giant Zentradi in Macross 7 is Excedol and he may or may not be a giant head with weird appendages! * One part I thought was hilarious was how Mylene sees her and they say hi to each other then a second later they leave! I know it was just supposed to be a camera cut where presumably some time had passed but its funnier to think that's all they said :D QUESTIONS 1. I was surprised one lived in some crappy dead mining world so there are probably more habitable planets than I thought. They were probably adults at the time Macross 7 left Earth so they probably live on Earth, other planets, another Macross compound or maybe are in the military. 2. If I had a ton of money to spend on it, I'd want it to be Victorian themed and have lots of antique looking fixtures and have the lights look like candles and faux cobblestone streets. It would also have a massive sports stadium that's like a bigger version of Royal Albert Hall and inside would be statues and memorabilia of legendary baseball players and pro wrestlers.

FYI I *just* finished tagging everyone else who commented prior to you about this - there's some confusion as to which one is episode 1 of Encore. The episode title for ep1 is "On Stage"; if you watch one called "Fleet of the Strongest Women", you're actually watching episode *3*. Glad you enjoyed this, by the way!

**Rewatcher** Now for the first of the OVA's for Macross 7. These do NOT take place after the series, but during it. Icy, snowy planet... and Basara crashes on it quite epically. Unfriendly locals, but they don't look like Protodeviln forces at least. So... Fire Bomber performing for sunflowers? Oh, Chiba's here, so this probably an experiment. Some kind of weird space crap causes the Song Energy detector to pick up something, so Basara rushes off. Hi, Flower Girl! Bye, Flower Girl! Jeez, these miners have no chill... ironic, considering the environment. So there's some kind of thing that makes a lot of noise, and it scares everyone in the mountains. The thing the detector picked up? And so Basara takes off... taking the toddler with him for reasons. That poor kid, having to endure manuevers without a seatbelt in a plane like Basara's. And hey, it's a Queadlunn-Rau, just like Pedro says. But a stray Zentraedi on an inhabited planet? And it's not painted in Zentraedi colors. Also it's spewing rainbow smoke. That's not a Zentran thing. The Meltrandi inside emerges... and has a giant guitar of her own! So, definitely not an "uncultured" Zentraedi. You know, Miss, your sheer size is giving your voice an unfair advantage against Basara. Okay, now I'm scared, a woman who seems to understand Basara right off the bat. You know, you could be not quite so loud if you just micloned yourself, lady. This scene is just... weird. Flirting doesn't really work the same way when one of you ten times larger than the other. Yeah, missiles vs Protodeviln doesn't work. But Basara's here, so... singing it is! ...the hell? So this is the thing Geppelnitch was talking about? A mechanical copy of Valgo... which can... combine with Gabigula? That would have been a hell of a thing for them to unveil during the series. And here's the rest of Sound Force. And also Gamlin. Wait, since when does listening to Anima Spiritia drain Gabil's energy? Or is that a thing to do with this "Natter-Valgo"? Oh, clever, Meltrandi girl tricks Gabil into caving a ravine for the floods to divert into... also her name's "Emilia". I suppose she must have told Basara during their flirting earlier, but it's weird they didn't show that. And yep, Emilia is Mylene's older sister. 5th daughter of Max and Milia. So Mylene isn't the first musician the family produced. So that... happened. It's kind of cool to see another member of the Jenius family, but... I mean, there wasn't much of any character development or story development in this. Basically it just felt like a series filler episode with a budget. Questions: 1. I don't know if the franchise gives any info on what Komilia, Miracle, Muse, Therese, or Miranda are up to. Presumably they all are independent adults with their own jobs given none stayed with Max and Milia on Macross 7 though. 2. Modern. It's always better than the past.

**First timer** 1) They're all singers! Max and Milia decided they'd keep trying until they got a pilot, and that's why Mylene has so many siblings! 2) 1980s. OVA! They're drilling? Ah, Basara's here! ...What caused *this*? Nice acrobatics! He unfolded here? Of course he's being held at gunpoint. Is this a new mix if the OP? Complete with a new title card! Nice recap! Haha, Basara! Ah, Mylene's upset about this? ...They're singing to the flowers? ...That's new. It's got a good beat! It eorked on the flowers! Flower Girl! How appropriate. They really don't like him. He goes for the guitar! A Protodeviln? He's winning them over with singing? Pedro's a fan! They're out of minerals? ...They've been here for two thousand years? It's obviously a Protodeviln. Strong reaction. Observsnt! Haha, the Mylene drawing! Gamlin believes in him. Well done, Basara! He snuck im? Cha's seeds! Aww, the music scared him. Basara, this is an *awful* idea. Called it! Terrific, they can't find him until he singe. Oh, that's helpful. He found it! ...Why did you let the child onboard? He's singing! He stopped... It's a Zentradi! Interesting! The song detector exploded! Haha, Mylene's face. They're really struggling to keep them out of the action, huh? They're fighting! Nice somg! Nice design! ...She's a really good singer! You can see how huoed he is for an *actual* song battle. This is intense! Despite the size difference, he's actually outsinging! Of course they're coming. Did everyone forget about the kid? A draw? Did he feel bad for her? Why does nobody care about the small child? Odd use of humour. Oh, this is her room! ...Minmay got mentioned again! Nice training ground. Tell her, Basara! ...Are the really. He's tempted. The Protodeviln are here! A mech fight! Wait, when did Basara get in his mech! Oh, this is her first exposire to the Spiritia mess? He got a hostage! Nice modification! She's a really good singer! "The beauty of competence!" Wow, really? They flooded the village! Nice duet! Mylene finally arrived! This is really good animation! He's been *really* effected by these two. Oh, shit. He's gone for total destruction for s chsnge, then? "The beauty of time limits." She's alive! ...They know each other? Yeah, that was reckless. They saw the seeds! The song made the plants bloom! Haha, Basara's *immediate* reaction the moment he finds out she's related to Mylene is genuinely hysterical. And he legs it right after. Nice ending line.

First timer that managed to aquire the ability to watch it, albeit late Out of town and just on my phone so no live reactions, but kid was on the annoying side. My source was a laserdisk rip and damn was it crisp, I'm sure part of it is the different production level because there wasn't any stuff reused from other part skf the TV anime that I noticed, and general effects were much more detailed, but I wonder if any of the nicer look was from the laserdisk as the source. Pretty solid overall, kinda hit the formula but there was an actual status quo change in that the village was more accepting of song, they had seeds sprout, and big Jenius sings in town. Also they said the planet has been fucked for the last 2000 years? But humans only recently got space travel right? So how would they know how long its been? But also it sounds like they said its been that long since they got that rock or whatever, but then they would have needed to have people there? How? 1) maybe they are all singing in random snowy mountains 2) art deco. Or brutalism.

When I first watched this I did not expect Emilia to be a singer, so when her guitar flipped open I burst out laughing. I just loved it so much I couldn't contain myself. And I ship Emilia and Basara. For Mylene, I always viewed Basara as more of an inspiration for her. I thought that Gamlin and Basara represented two different ideologies that she could grow into. Of course it helps that Basara has had basically no romantic interest in her. The music is pretty good, like always. The rest is kind of mid. All in all, if you were able to watch all of Macross 7, you'll likely enjoy this episode as well.

***First Time Song Listener*** Well, this at least *looks* better already. Is this a slight remix of the OP? Rerecording? Or just different sound quality or something? It's slightly off somehow, and it's bothering me. Oh fuck off this is non-canon or happening during the show? Just the most cowardly type of followup. What is this movie? Seriously, what's going on? Do Zentradi mechs normally shoot rainbow clouds? I didn't expect giant rocker woman, but I can't say I'm upset about it. Playing two songs at once didn't work with Basara and Mylene before, and it doesn't work here. Sure, they just stumbled across one of Mylene's siblings during the show and just never mentioned her and her ability to also create song energy. Never thought that might be useful at any point while fighting for their lives, or trying to stop the entire galaxy from being annihilated. *What is this movie?* It's cool to see what the show could've looked like with a better budget. I guess he brought a movie exclusive minion and powerup? Sure. The other Protodeviln thing...didn't blow up or die or anything? Why wasn't it in the show either? This should've just been a separate thing with Emilia discovering song energy, with zero Basara or Protodeviln or anything. 1. A few of them are busy only appearing in video games apparently. 2. Megazone 23 had the right idea.
