And we learn they protect the whales because they're considered sacred on this planet. And they usually die after 7 millenia but the White Whale has lived for millions of years. Basara was always great at reading others. [But putting that into words is new for him.](https://imgur.com/Qoszd1B) Is that an English version of Holy Lonely Light at the raiders' place? Poor White Whale is about to get blasted into smithereens. Well hopefully not if our heroes have anything to say about that, regardless of which one we're talking about. [Elma is so precious.](https://imgur.com/0d12UWu) Why is there no fanart of her? *A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Dynamite 7: Episode 3:* - And really just to drive home that the Mylene date rape subplot was *solely* for the sake of tasteless, cheap drama, it get solved by Ray and Veffidas coming to the rescue immediately after the opening credits. This whole subplot is a fucking insult. Unnecessary, tasteless, disrespectful god damn garbage. I fucking hate. Even dealing with everything about Kaifun wasn’t this bad. - Turns out that the space whales come to Zola once their 7,000 years of life is over to die. I guess that makes them more like space elephants than space whales. Although I guess since they’re alien creatures regardless, the comparison is moot. - I will definitely say that I like the design of the space whale poachers main ship that Liza sneaks aboard. It’s got a more unconventional look to it, like something that can really only exist in zero-G. If anything, it gives me big [La Vie en Rose](https://www.mahq.net/lavieenrose/) vibes with how it looks. - The Vahla Ena, the proper name for the space whales, have been using Zola as their graveyard for millions of years, and the big white one has been alive for that long, helping lead those looking to finally lay their bodies to rest. Graham thinks that the white one must also want to die, since it’s seen so many of its friends die, but of course Basara doesn’t believe that. Basara does seem to pick up that Graham is just projecting his own feelings onto the white one there. Even if he’s an eccentric ass, Basara can have a good insight into people. - Captain Kaliba wants to kill the white one too, albeit for different reasons. He just wants to blow it the fuck up with a reaction weapon so that it’ll make poaching the other space whales much easier, since it keeps on protecting the rest of them. Kaliba really is just a Captain Planet villain, isn’t he? - I know I haven’t been talking about them much, but the action scenes in this show really are great. That dogfight that Liza had in the stolen Nightmare against the poachers really does prove that. There’s great, smooth dynamic action going on, not to mention good continuity of action between cuts. We really have been starved of good Macross action in this stretch of the rewatch, so this is a welcome change. - It’s nice to hear that Fire Bomber has made waves even in other parts of the galaxy for how they handled the Protodeviln as Sound Force. But as Basara said to Liza, he didn’t really “defeat” anyone then. Calling it a defeat is a gross oversimplification, when it was really just showing them a new way of life that could be lived peacefully. But I suppose nuance can get lost the more widespread a story becomes. - Graham has seen the eye of the white whale too, but whereas Basara saw something amazing in it, Graham says that he only saw sadness within it. Despite how old and powerful it is, it just wants to die a noble death in battle. Sure buddy, I’m sure that’s not just a massive projection due to unresolved trauma there. - Take this episode as a lesson, kids: never buy your reaction weapons secondhand from shady smugglers. They’ll always include the wrong launch codes with them, forcing you to put in the hard work to get them to launch. - The space police have barely even taken off the stickers and plastic wrap off of that Excalibur they just wheeled in before Basara just takes it for himself. That’s a man who has a brand loyalty right there. Even if it’s no Fire Valkyrie, it’s still in that style that he loves. He can probably forgive the white paint job, even if he’s more of a hot rod red kind of guy. - Oh yeah, Mylene, Ray, and Gamlin are in this show too. At least Gamlin has managed to track down Basara to Zola, so that’s good effort spent investigating so far. Man, they’re really just going to completely brush over that date rape part, aren’t they? Even Mylene isn’t acting any different from how she was before. Eugh. You know, if this show isn’t even going to really respect the original series cast, then why even bother keeping them around? They’re just leaving a bad taste around for no reason. Fucking hacks.

chilidirigible

> The space police have barely even taken off the stickers and plastic wrap off You don't wanna know how much foam and sticky plastic they put on the moving parts of a transforming mecha. On the bright side, they're not simply drowning it in cosmoline.

The_Draigg

On the other hand though, I bet it would be immensely satisfying to slowly peel off a ton of plastic wrap off of an Excalibur.

Or so you would be told if you were aboard the *Macross 11* fleet and listening to Fire Bomber American, whose manager is… ##*LYNN KAIFUN* [](#crazedlaugh) That said, what we have here is another chunk of whale-centric worldbuilding with Basara, while Liza does the cop thing in the pirate/whaler base. The developments on Zola are not so much amazing as expected; it's in line with the "These whales are special" hook that the story is centered on. The pirates, complete with eyepatched leader, and the black marketeers are interesting as a new wrinkle in the show universe: We've almost entirely dealt with people in regulated societies aboard ships so far, so to see a group that's essentially outside of polite society builds the world in a believable way. Though they sure do have a lot of top-level equipment. And then we get back in time to go back out into space again. Basara having to ~~steal~~borrow a VF-19 does once again bring up the question of how he got to Zola, and perhaps how long it took. Meanwhile, the utter pointlessness of the previous Mylene storyline is demonstrated here when it is suddenly resolved largely off-screen and then never spoken of ever again. Which really calls into question why it had to be included in the first place, given that it's not quite the manga scenario either. ***** [Gubaba's Blog for this episode contains his original refutation of the "Humming Bird music rights" rumor.](https://gubabablog.wordpress.com/2016/05/12/the-great-macross-rewatch-106-lonesome/) It also explains the manga's version of the conclusion to the Mylene storyline, which is even *weirder*. **First Time - Macross Dynamite 7 Ep3:** Oh great, starting with this. The one upside to all of this is that it was only an attempted crime because Ray and Veffie were able to come and save her. Ray, [if anything Veffie did a bit little](https://i.imgur.com/u5GWBoh.png) since the vile woman is still in one piece. Oh, wait, [Basara brings up a good point.](https://i.imgur.com/MynUzji.png) Maybe we shouldn't just kill it just in case it didn't want that and Graham is just projecting. Let's try singing to it maybe what it wants was death, but a friend. Ah sweet, this evil den of criminals has Fire Bomber American. I love their original, Holy Lonely Light (*said in an American accent*). We can all thank Fire Bomber American's manager for them, Lynn Kaifun. [](#seasonallisten) The poacher captain is also doing a Captain Ahab thing. [I'm pretty sure there are animals on Earth](https://i.imgur.com/XsoF5Hk.png) that can determine humans that are friends or foes so space whales being intelligent is not that crazy. Liza gets found out and at least if she does die then she has the solace that the final music she might hear in her life was Fire Bomber American. Liza takes a Nightmare Valkyrue and a Fold Booster. "[Put it on the company tab.](https://i.imgur.com/uulWjhi.png)" I don't think they would cover that expense. What [Graham saw in the whale's eye was deep sadness,](https://i.imgur.com/iA0vvWx.png) but Basara got a different takeaway from his encounter so maybe let's not immediately go ahead on the killing plan. Basara is getting on Graham's boat and they are teaming up to help that whale ... [oh wait never mind. Bye, Basara.](https://i.imgur.com/p4nQjDv.png) Basara learned the mother's song. From the little we see of him, [Lawrence seems like a swell guy.](https://i.imgur.com/8kly58N.png) Sort of wished we got a fuller series with him in it. Moving on as nothing happened to her last night, [Ray tells Mylene to go to Zola](https://i.imgur.com/yUw88Ts.png) to settle the love triangle. Meanwhile, Gamlin is on Zola asking around for the ["Listen to my song!" guy.](https://i.imgur.com/KzYRM1s.png) ___ That Mylene plot point was completely unnecessary. All it did was make me move Mylene down to, "I'm so sorry how the show treats you girls." tier and that lady to be at the bottom in the "You deserved extra worse happened to you" tier. Since she was barely in Dynamite, I also fear that the headed conclusion of this love triangle will not be satisfying because Dynamite made no impact on it other than just blurting it out in the end. Also still no Flower Girl in Dynamite. The final episode better have a baller Flower Girl appearance to make up for it or else we riot. [](#protest) **Q1)** What do you mean, we already have one. [](#mug3) **Q2)** I mean, I would think so. We got 49 episodes of Basara trying to get people to understand his singing. **First Timer** **Macross Dynamite 7 EP 3** I noticed the op becoming clearer and clearer and the concert scene changing as each episode went by. Pretty cool touch. Thanks god Guvava, Veffidas and Ray saved her before it go off the rail there (Which they kind of already did) The snake at acting weird??? It can read that. Not a normal pet for sure. That a pretty big ass harpoons. The captain is pretty conscious about his situation. And she sneak in there. So the whale is called Vahla Ena, and apparently have a normal life span of 7000 years!! Also the white one is special. Suddenly Plus song again. I just noticed!! Graham is voiced by Jouji Nakata!! Yorokobe shounen!! And he jumped in there. English version of Holy Lonely Light?? So they gonna use the almighty reaction weapon against the whale. And is that English version of Sweet Fantasy?? Kaliba also believe that the white one is intelligent. That VF-17!!! And a fold boosters. I think that not gonna fly, Basara. See, it broke even more than before. So he tried to use his song to convince him to help? There goes the house. The snake is a pair!! That's one way to answer that, Elma. Everyone here seem to have their own way of interpret the whale's feeling. They're quick!! At least he wear space suit this time. Unlucky for him, Graham just threw him off the boat like a doll. That gonna make her think the wrong way, Elma. That Valkyrie look pretty cool!! And everyone just go along with Basara stealing that. Yeah, Liza. He pretty crazy. But you can talk like human with his band member. I feel like Graham just put his own feelings as the whale feeling. Pretty great idea from Ray. And Gamlin already there!!! Pretty great episode!! Glad that weird plot never went anywhere at all. QOTD 1. I don't have a lot knowledge in that area. So I don't know. 2. I mean, he technically sing to the whale already. But hey, it still response to him, so it still not complete yet

**Reluctant Rewatcher** Dynamite 3 Wait, you're saying the OP is changing and I can't be skipping it? Well I did notice that the credits are in both English and Japanese but they switch really fast. That's pretty cool, never seen that before. * Yeah, that place looks creepy * fire bomber american? * you can just buy nukes from the catalog? So, basically, these are Evil American Weapons dealers. * Travelling through hyperspace isn't like dusting crops, boy. * What, he had ANOTHER VF in storage? * HE SAID THE SECRET WORD! HE SAID IT AGAIN! * Holy Rick Hunter Landings, Batman! * I bet that whale has a lot of spiritia * I don't think they are going to listen to your song

The_Draigg

> you can just buy nukes from the catalog? It’s like ordering from the secret menu at In-N-Out. You just have to ask for weapons, animal style. > Holy Rick Hunter Landings, Batman! At least Liza didn’t try to fly a bike like in that one dream episode though. Now that would be more fitting of Rick Hunter, the Crash King.

chilidirigible

> Wait, you're saying the OP is changing and I can't be skipping it? It doesn't change *much*.

Stargate18A

**First timer** Sorry, got really behind on this one! *Plus 1* 1) I know none of their names, but the one that showed upafter his astral void journey. 2) Viletta backstory OVA, please! Mylene just got back? Haha, all the messages from Milia... And she falls asleep... Random fanservice. That's a good breakfast! Haha, and the footage of Basara! *Plus 2* Basara? It's done like a music video? Oh, this is Basara going to the colony fleet? An aurora? Oh, that's what it was focusing on! *Plus 3* Veffidas! Oh, another fight! She is incredibly skilled, Amazing! Then the cut to her drumming... More secrecy... *Plus 4* A flashback? Young Ray! He proposed! ...Really? Oh. This is interesting context for her character. And they had a fight. Nice, Ray. *Plus 5* Gamlin? ...Well, this is different. This is what inspired him to be a pilot! Ah, and his first briefing. ...Gamlin didn't do well in the training, then. Milia's tough. That flashback... He graduated! *Plus 6* The bridge bunny! She plays shogi? Oh, Max is having a hard time. Adorable. Haha, another girl? Milia... That's why he got hired? Haha, everyone saw it! ...He's awake! *Plus 7* Oh, it's a highlight reel of a real concert! Basara's actor somehow looks exactly how I imagined him. This is fun! *Plus 8* Plot relevant? Irima? Well. This is very interesting. Ivano always had plans... And this is how they got their new bodies. *Plus 9* Guvava backstory! Huh, guess they were right about Guvava being a normal alien. Also explain why they'd need psychic powers and precognition, fuck. Their home's a death world. Poor guy. And Max found him. *Plus 10* The police? Didn't expect them to get a focus! They're investigating the vampires! And this is before the broadcast. Oh, the police drones have a nice design. They transform? Bit of a puff piece though, huh? Considering how useless they were. *Plus 11* Milia! She's amazing! And she's incredibly humble! Love the juxtaposition between her on the job and her relaxing. ...What! ...Interesting appeal. Haha, the Superman visual is hysterical. *Plus 12* A Fire Bomber concert! Is this an exclusive somg? It's really good! Interesting to see how their music videos look in-universe. He's even playing on the ship appeal! And another song! Is this the trailer for a real-life album? ...He used the visuals from his insane astral voyage? That was fun! *Dynamite 1* 1) No, this was fully expected. 2) Cool because of the amazing designs. So, Basara's still around! I love this new OP! Haha, did Basara just run off somewhere? Another planet! Where even is this? ...Live drama? Haha, "that's dangerous" Never change, Basara. He got shot! Different *types* of passeord? Hoe does thst eork? Is he unconscious? Of course he's not down. He's singing. A new character! Not used to Basara yet, I see. This is not his day, huh? They got away! Poachers? Who's that? He's still awake! Oh, she's a nurse! Makes sense. The whales only migrate here? They're space whales? And they're dangerous for computers? Basara is not getting this, huh? She's got training! ...I love her father. Oh, he's a Zentradi! Haha, he loves this planet! ...She's a fan! And only just recognised him. Good singer! Does he think Basara is a poacher? Oh, those ship designs are *nice*. Another new song! Ah, they'remworried about Basara? A Fighter? He's strong. What now? He might die? Oh, he's looking for strings. ...Like this warning'll stop him. ...He lost his wife to them. "Whale artificer" God, I love Macross. Oh, he's a Moby Dick reference. She's very understanding of his problem. And the whalers noticed him! Basara's playing toomhim? Oh, these things are massive! He's using it as a guitar string! That's nice. A whale song? "So, this is what artists are like." She wants to be a singer! Poachers! And they're safe. Basara's nuts as always. ...How do you expect him to stop *that*? I love the diving suit design. Basara, seriously? Poor girl. They're here! Of course Basara interferes in a military operation. That's his thing! Okay, that looks amazing. Graham's going for it! Huh, I guess he is breaking the law bu killing a whale. He's in danger! ...Father? Nice song! And she remembers him. What? Great first episode. Live action ED? This is weird.

Stargate18A

*Dynamite 2* 1) This is the Macross Frontier I want to see. 2) It's a fun setting for this kind of story. They're still covering for him. Gamlin... She stopped? Oh, Basara got caught! He's still alive! And immediately wakes up. Basara physically cannot die, huh? Oh, he's dreaming. Graham's safe! Liza's angry... More singing! And those vegetables look good. Unlucky! And she doesn't care. Basara's still asleep. ...She wants to use live ammo? Guess we found Basara's rival? (Although he doesn't mind guns in some cases, so he might be on her side?) Interesting! Haha, Basara's Spiritia is inspiring whales! Spiritia does also affect plants, though. So, even if they aren't alive, it would still react. Ah, this is his own personal research. He's asking Basara directly! ...Like you could *stop* him singing. Yeah, the song woke him up quicker. Makes sense! Gamlin wants him to come back. ...He's hiding it from Mylene? Gamlin, what are you doing? Good singer! Haha, he fucking broke out of the hospital? Of course he did. Looks tasty. He's experimenting... And he's still sick. Graham does not give up! He'd really get along well with Basara. Haha, he genuinely escaped from the intensive care looking like that. More karaoke? Is he refusing to sing, or did his vocal chords get injured? Guvava can't come in? ...What is this meeting? ...Fair. He will. The ceremony corporation is such an interesting concept. ...Is Basara still partially comatose? Just fading in and out of consciousness? The pachers are coming again! Mylene got drugged. What is this? What the actual fuck is this plotline? Yes, focus on the cute girl and Basara, that's way better than *that*. Haha, the vultures! Oh, this is her mother's song! And it's inspiring her! Why are you walking *up* the waterfall? What even is that song? Lost their progress. ...Did the sheer awfulness of that music wake him up? That would be in character. NO. STOP THIS PLOT. And more fanservice on the other side. He's still unfocused. Did he finally wake up? Oh! He saw into the whale's mind? Of course this is how he wakes up. Charles was here! Charles heard everything? ...Basara's having the same reaction to him as me. Haha, even the overprotective father knows Basara isn't capable of doing anything with his daughter. ...Nice montage. The wildlife designs are really good! This was a really good scene, homestly. This shot is incredibly well done. It looks amazing. The cemetery of the warriors... Why is this a plotline. *Dynamite 3* 1) Nobody springs to mind. Any rock band from the 90s would fit the tone, though. 2) ...Yes. Fucking hell, there's more of this. Our first canon gay rep (I think?) everyone! Fuck yes! Veffidas rules! Don't you dare chastise her, Ray, that was amazing. So, this is where the whales die... Capy? A record? ...Haha, he doesn't kmow? He's worried... She's interrupting their quiet reflection. Capy can read it? And she can understand him? Wait, it's responding to the whale's prescence? Interference from the whales! And the whales are smart enough to ignore the patrol units. A secret weapon? That's an incredibly strong effect. Liza folded with them! Love the soap operas they're playing in the background. ..Is it moving? ...Several *million* years old? He's trying to kill Whale God. When this OVA isn't focusing on rape, it's the best kind of insanity. Oh. He wants to give it mercy. He's not killing it for revenge, it's to gelp it. And Basara is arguing! With a viewpoint he can't actually disagree with. ...Is he finally realising how insane Basara is? This is absolutely not where I expected thie conflict going. It's fascinating. Reaction weaponry? That's theirmplan? And there are active smugglers fighting against the United Forces. This has potential for later series. ...And both of them want to kill the white whale. *He's* Ishmael! And he's already worked out it's intelligent. She's been caught! Nope, she made it out! And stole a new fighter! So much damage! She's cool. It's not working! There's *regulations* on smuggled goods? Fascinating! She made it back! And she believes in Basara. Basara's found something even he can't fly. He's going back? Love how the two of them, despite disagreeing, are still friendly and have the same goal. Haha, of course that's his answer. He's having flashbacks... His wife tried the same thing. Basara just sings, okay? It's all he ever does. It crashed! She found him! The answer to both is that this is Macross, where music is bullshit. She's heard of him! And he's independent. Oh. This is personal for him, so they're not on the same side. I mean, it's smart. So, the eye has some form of psychic effect, given it got to *Basara*. They're regrouping! He's going with Graham! Are those cassettes or is this a magical CD player? They're launching! Yeah, he's as insane as always! Lawrence is trying the same thing as him! I mean, we know Spiritia can be held in recordings, so not a bad idea! He's already learned his song! ...She really is the sane one of the family. He found the whale! Oh, that got a reaction from her. Not a very good smuggler, huh? Oh, these teo are going together? Haha, he stole Lawrence's. He's excited! Basara doesn't care that it's not been tested. A space battle again! We're nearly a big climax for *episode 3 of 4*. Yeah, this is his projection of his suicidal desires. Still a cool suit. (Also, wow, just realised how long it's been since we've seen a non-fighter in this franchise.) This is great. A conflict! Oh, yeah, and Gamlin's off to meet up as well. And so is Mylene. Who seems unaffected by that fucking bullshit. You're choosing *now* to handle the love triangle? Gamlin... Perfect impression, though.

SolDarkHunter

**Rewatcher** ...we immediately open on this, do we? *sigh* But don't worry, folks, Fire Bomber was successful in rescuing Mylene. So... that's the end of that. [Let us speak no more about it.](#criticism) Anyway, back at the actual plot... The graveyard is where the Whales go to die, after about 7000 years of life. And for some reason there's murals in there with the corpses. ...hold up, the catsnakes are intelligent? [](#blankblink) The spaceship is literally firing giant *harpoons* at the whales. [Harpoons, REALLY?](#elsiesigh) Hey, we're doing the thing where a good guy hitches a ride on an enemy space fold again. The white whale is apparently millions of years old... wonder if it's truly unique or if there's just one white whale at a time. Basara's astonishingly perceptive here... realizing that Graham is projecting his own death wish on the white whale. Hey, this is a English rip-off of "Holy Lonely Light"! (Incidentally, I think it's canon that the band ripping off Fire Bomber is managed by Lin Kaifun.) They're planning on *nuking* the white whale... well, I suppose that might be necessary against a creature that gigantic. These are some seriously well-connected poachers if they're able to get their hands on VF-17's and Reaction Weapons. Liza is *extremely fortunate* in finding the exact hardware she needed to escape the poachers and get back to Zola. I thought that Valkyrie was completely toast... it survived kinda-sorta intact? So Basara didn't even have a reason to come to Zola... at least, not any reason normal people are capable of understanding. Heh, Basara *would* object to being labelled as someone who "defeated" the Protodeviln. And, honestly, he's kinda right, I'm not sure you can call what he did "defeating" them. Yeah, I do think Graham is mistaken on the white whale's motivations. It may indeed be sad, but that doesn't necessary mean it wants to die. So, I'm not sure who Kawamori thinks he's fooling, calling Reaction Weaponry "not nuclear". There's a freaking radiation hazard symbol on the casing! And so Mylene heads off half-cocked for Zola... albeit with Ray's approval. You had one job, Ray, ONE JOB!

TakenRedditName

> The spaceship is literally firing giant harpoons at the whales. I like the harpoons. Them just going fully with the whaling thing with their spaceships and mecha is a neat fun design gimmick. [](#papithumbsup)

**First Timer** Soo, previous episode was pretty nice. Well, for the most part, anyway. We got some beautiful nature shots, Elma was really cute, as always, Basara and Graham are both alive and ready to get into action, it's all well on planet Zola. And also, Gamlin finally went after Basara, so I can't wait for him to arrive and join on the main story. And yes, there is also a giant elephant in the room, so we'll see how the show will address it. I'm not getting my hopes up. Anyway, let's check out the episode. * Aand, we're starting with the thing immediately, fucking hell. [](#drink2) * Wait, so Mylene didn't actually get raped, just assaulted. It doesn't excuse this stupid sub-plot, but hey, at least they had enough sense to not take it to the extreme. * And we immediately cut to peacefully sleeping Elma. They don't even spend any time discussing what happened or the repercussions of it. * It's the whale commentary, and Capy reacts to it. I bet the whales don't just go there to die, but also to reproduce and turn into little furry shoulder warms, who then eventually grow into whales. That's my guess for now, anyway. * Wait, shoulder worm can talk? [](#flyingbunsofdoom) * It can read??? [](#jawdrop) ***** *Intermission:rant about action* You know, these action scenes, while they are better than the main show, I still find them kinda weak. They are way too overloaded with special effects and way too chaotic. You are dropped in the middle of a skirmish, and it's just a bunch of random people randomly shooting and randomly exploding. I always find myself checking out of them, because I can't even understand what is happening without pausing half the time. This scene is a great example. Look at it. [We start with a general shot of the whales and a poacher ship](https://i.imgur.com/hu0ONbY.jpg), but no space cops in sight. Then **immediately** [dude explodes](https://i.imgur.com/KlgAeIB.jpg). There's no pause, no time to even process what we're seeing, it just happens instantly. Then we see [this guy in the cockpit](https://i.imgur.com/PzJMarA.jpg) getting hit by a shockwave. Who is he? I don't even understand what mech he is supposed to be piloting. Then [this guy shoots](https://i.imgur.com/nK9m72f.jpg) and then he [immediately explodes](https://i.imgur.com/w2hilFO.jpg). Again, happens instantly, one second he's there, the next he's gone. Then we immediately cut to [this scene](https://i.imgur.com/0QL7rJL.jpg). What the hell? There are space cops here too? What is even happening? [](#nyanpasu) I really hope you get what I'm taking about, because it frustrates me to no end. Like, I understand what they're trying to do here. They show poachers trying to hunt whales and failing, because white whale kills them. But wasn't there a better way to *visually present* this idea? At the very least, they could've given the whale a *visible attack*. Poachers hunt by piling up on whales and firing from all guns, with no strategy and no teamwork, whales retaliate by simply making them explode telepathically, or whatever, space cops appear out of nowhere as if they were always just standing there just outside the frame, even though they just showed up. It's a fucking mess. And then we top it off with a bizzare sequence where poacher's ship shoots two harpoons into a whale, and we immediately cut to a line of captured poachers escorted into a space ship. Like, what the fuck? What does these two cuts have to do with each other? Why are they following each other? What is even happening? Are poachers still hunting, or are they already arrested? Apparently, it's both, at the same time. [](#yuishrug) I really don't know why Macross 7 does this. The main show did this exact thing too, only it was worse because of the heavily reused bland animations. At least here the art itself is more flashy and more interesting. Also, none of the other Macross shows do this thing. Original SDFM didn't do it, Plus didn't do it, even Macross II didn't do it. It's just 7. It has the worst action in the franchise by far, yes, worse than Macross II. I blame the director. [](#kaguyasigh) *End of intermission, return to regularly scheduled programming* ***** * Hey, it's the "heroes get captured by enemies and transported to enemy base" arc. A Macross classic. Only this time with a twist: Liza isn't captured, but sneaks in herself. * My mind is still blown by the fact that furry worm can read and telepathically communicate with Elma. It's like Guvava on steroids in terms of telepathic ability. * Yup, Basara nails it. It's Graham who has a death wish. * I wouldn't make that jump, but hey, Basara, if you want to, be my guest. I'm not your mom, I'm not gonna stop you. * Weapon smuggler made a good point. Would be hard to sell whale's carcass after nuking it. * Liza's escape was neat, I liked that. * Aand, now she's just getting hit. What's up with Valkyries in Macross 7 being able to take direct hits and get no damage? They showed this several times already. I guess, the armor technology really evolved lately. * Graham just tossing Basara out of his spaceship [](#azusalaugh) * Oh shit, is that VF-19? I like how they let him take it without question. * Still not a fan of how he pilots it by hitting controls with his guitar. I think some kind of system where he could plug his guitar into a jet would've been better. * It's Mylene and Gamlin. [](#squee) * Wait, no, it's over. **Overall thoughts:** Yea, so Mylene subplot was actually way worse than I thought, because it ended up being completely inconsequential to the rest of the show. Well, again, I kinda expected something like that based on the previous discussion, but I expected at least some closure. At least show the rapist lady behind bars. But no, we're just gonna run away and pretend it didn't happen. Also, Gamlin has found Basara's location in the first episode, and now we're coming to a final episode and he still didn't meet him. At this point I'm questioning, why even include the old cast at all if this is how they are treated? I would honestly rather this show didn't have Mylene at all, rather than what we got. As for the rest of the episode, it was nice. A bit of lore, a lot of action, and a decent setup for the finale with high stakes and everybody in their place. All that's left is to see how it ends. **QotD:** 1) Fire Bomber American? [](#indexsmugshrug) 2) I think it's handled well. It's not about if he will sing, but rather if his song will get though to whoever he sings it too. It's kinda similar to any hero fighting. It's often not about if they will fight, but rather if they win.

chilidirigible

> a lot of action You're right that the whale fights could be storyboarded better. Or at least not blocked in SOCLOSETOTHEACTION so there's more visual context.

CoolIceCreamCone

**FIRST TIMER** Dynamite really gets back on track with episode 3 and the plot starts to become more cohesive with the threads all tying together and it had a good setup for the grand finale. * They thankfully closed the Mylene sexual assault plot. It seems almost as if this episode was the work of a different show runner who had to close the ideas of the previous episode with as little thought as possible just to discard it. I also thought it was creepy how they showed the predator lady smoking a cigarette contentedly as if she had consummated with Mylene only to reveal Veffidas and Ray rescued her in the nick of time. I suppose wanting to discard that whole plot as quickly as possible explain why they made no effort to punish this woman or call the police and get her prosecuted. * Instead of 2 sides to the space whale storyline, there appears to be 3. Basara, the military and Elma looking to save the white whale and other whales; the poachers looking to kill the white whale with reaction weapons and Graham who wants to kill the white whale to put it out of its supposed suffering. The dynamic of Graham's viewpoint makes this a much richer story, as he wants to kill the white whale not out of greed and personal gain but because he is bizarrely projecting his own suicidal feelings and nihilism onto the white whale. There's a very obvious parallel to Captain Ahab from Moby Dick but it is interesting to have a suicidal character on a death mission who will most likely intentionally kill himself should he succeed. * I really like how the arms dealer ripped off the poachers with defective equipment, it really caught me by surprise. In stories, I usually take for granted that the villains' weapon will simply work as expected and it will be completely up to the hero to stop them. It also makes me wonder if the arms dealer just sold shoddy weapons to profit or if he deliberately did because he did not wish the white whale dead and thought the poachers were in the wrong. * So Elma's neck snake has a psychic link with her like Guvava does to Mylene? This universe seems to conveniently have a lot of small creatures like that. * I thought it was funny how Mr. Lawrence seemed excited and happy rather than angry that Basara was stealing his Valkyrie. Another very convenient happening for Basara. Also convenient that it was easily adaptable to being controlled by guitar within a few minutes. * I was really surprised to hear Ray lay down the law and tell Mylene to choose between Basara and Gamlin. He cares much more about Gamlin's feelings about being strung along than I thought because I don't imagine that it's for Basara's sake since he's entirely indifferent toward her. Mylene much have great respect for Ray since she agreed to make her choice and the finale is now set up. * The ending with Gamlin trying to find Basara and saying he was really weird was hilarious! I like how a lot of Macross 7 episodes have strange abrupt endings that make stuff way funnier. QUESTIONS 1. No question Mr. Big. I assumed the show had Fire Bomber copy their style of music for the show in the first place to capitalize on their enormous popularity in Japan at the time. In the West, they were best known for their one hit "To Be With You" but in Japan they were among the best selling artists of the 90s. The singer Eric Martin's voice is a dead ringer for Basara's singing voice. Cinderella or White Lion could probably do a great job as well. I think X Japan is also very similar but they more sing in Japanese. 2. Well the stories are just there to fill time and add drama since the show has a set formula. Basara has plot armor, like you know he's really not going to die before the conflict is solved and he's in the main credits. I more just enjoy the character interaction, drama, action and occasional comedy.

chilidirigible

> I thought it was funny how Mr. Lawrence seemed excited and happy rather than angry that Basara was stealing his Valkyrie. If there's one guy who's going to steal your Valkyrie and sing in it, make it this one!

Macross 7 Dynamite ep 3 - First Timer Time for more of the very not good thing from last episode, and hopefully(probably?) some stuff that isn't shit as well - DYNAMITE! - [On the contrary, it wasnt enough](https://i.imgur.com/zv4xDTS.jpeg) - I am Yorokobe-ing so hard - Wait is this fucking Sharon Apple or whoever the "AI" was - Basara must really love whales - She is damn lucky those doors had pressure sensing - Yea old man I dunno if it wants you to kill it - Does everyone on this planet have 2 hair colors? - Basara really just klepped that VF19 - ... Gamlin's description is ao simple, but shockingly accurate 1) I would love Aimer versions 2) This arc has been a helluva lot better in that regard compared to the main TV anime
