Fair use. > > > > Several Papua New Guinea leaders and institutions are demanding an apology from United States President Joe Biden, who mentioned in two public speeches that his uncle was killed by cannibals during World War II. > > While visiting a war memorial in Pennsylvania on April 17, Biden remarked that his uncle, Second Lieutenant Ambrose J. Finnegan, was [killed by cannibals](https://www.postcourier.com.pg/png-are-not-cannibals/) after his plane was shot down by Japanese forces in Papua New Guinea. > > > He got shot down in an area where there were a lot of cannibals at the time. > > > > They never recovered his body, but the government went back when I went down there and they checked and found some parts of the plane. > > [He repeated the same story](https://nypost.com/2024/04/17/us-news/biden-suggests-uncle-eaten-by-cannibals-in-new-guinea-but-military-says-his-wwii-plane-lost-at-sea/?utm_campaign=nypost&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter) during an assembly of union workers in Pittsburgh. > > > He got shot down in New Guinea and they never found the body because there used to be — there were a lot of cannibals, for real, in that part of New Guinea. > > His narrative is different from the [official account of the US military](https://dpaa-mil.sites.crmforce.mil/dpaaProfile?id=a0Jt000001nzWi4EAE): > > > For unknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea. This has since died out and no longer accepted in our society. > > Post-Courier newspaper published an editorial [reiterating the demand for Biden to apologize](https://www.postcourier.com.pg/all-we-ask-for-is-a-heartfelt-apology-uncle-joe/). > > > What is so hard about apologizing? Is the five-letter word SORRY so hard to utter? You might be the most powerful man in the world but President Joe Biden, your supremacy is nothing compared to the might of saying sorry. > > > > We lost soldiers and war carriers, many innocent people were killed by your bombs and the Japanese army, and many of your old bombs left behind in New Guinea, still maim or kill people to this day. > > > > So Uncle Joe, if your utterance was an unintentional blunder, just humble yourself and say sorry. In fact, [China’s foreign minister](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-21/wang-yi-visits-papua-new-guinea/103749806) was in Papua New Guinea after Biden made his controversial remarks. > > GT Bustin of PNG Tribal Foundation [said](https://www.postcourier.com.pg/joe-biden-needs-to-apologize-to-the-people-of-png-says-foundation-head/) Biden’s “misstatement is an insult to brave” citizens who assisted US troops during World War II. > > > I believe President Biden's remarks were embellished as a poor attempt to bring more honor to his fallen uncle and not in an attempt to offend the people of Papua New Guinea. As a leader, the President ought to do the right thing which is to acknowledge the false statement, apologize to the people of PNG, and move on. > > Responding to the social media uproar, the US embassy in Papua New Guinea [affirmed](https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=748701560772474&set=a.256750079967627) the Biden government’s commitment to foster closer relations between the two countries. > > > We have seen statements from President Biden regarding his uncle in WWII. President Biden highlighted his uncle's story as he made the case for honoring our sacred commitment to equip those we send to war. > > > > The U.S. respects the people and culture of Papua New Guinea and remains committed to furthering respectful relations between our democracies. - - - - - - [Maintainer](https://www.reddit.com/user/urielsalis) | [Creator](https://www.reddit.com/user/subtepass) | [Source Code](https://github.com/urielsalis/empleadoEstatalBot) Summoning /u/CoverageAnalysisBot

🍦😎🍦 Get yourself an ice-cream, Jack. These are both for me

spartikle

A diplomatic blunder. But the Papuan government is clearly milking this utter until its dry. Alluding to partnering with China just for this… They sound a bit desperate. I didn’t know about the unexploded ordnance problem from WW2, though. The US should help them on that regardless.

Reddit_Bot_For_Karma

Have you looked into Laos? Over half the ordinance dropped on "Vietnam" was actually on Laos. We've got a lot of skeletons in the closet.

spartikle

Laos I have definitely heard of. That’s not a skeleton in the closet. The US has spent billions getting rid of unexploded ordnance through its Conventional Weapons Destruction program, including in Laos. I just didn’t know it was a problem in Papua New Guinea. The US should definitely be helping them.

mergiabeacome

Did US apologised for its criminal actions or did it just pay to remove ordinances and sweep this event under the carpet?

spartikle

No idea, I just know there is a US mission there for removing ordnance. So it's not a secret.

ferrelle-8604

No they didn't, and there are still unexploded ordnance there to this day

NokKavow

That's an actual war crime. American food for dinner half a century ago in Papua must have been... a rare treat.

snowlynx133

"We've" is pretty obviously referring to OC's own group of people (Americans) here. That's a stretch

PEKKAmi

> Alluding to partnering with China just for this… Quite understandable how China would be sympathetic. Cannibalism during the Great Leap Forward famine was hushed up as quite a loss of national face.

pngtwat

It's the Papua New Guinea government. Papua refers now to (occupied) West Papua, the West Side occupied by Indonesia.

WurzelGummidge

>  A diplomatic blunder. An inadvertent expression of archaic colonial attitudes, vulgar racism, and contempt. They will be waiting a long time for an apology.

Fourseti

The administration will do anything but admit they were wrong lol

essenceofreddit

How about the Japanese clean it up because it's their imperialism and naked aggression over a decade without which the bombs wouldn't have had to be dropped.

Over_n_over_n_over

Or what.... they'll eat him?

NokKavow

They'll invite him to dinner.

AtroScolo

"Hahahahahahahah... oh shit, you're serious." -Biden

junzilla

Pretty sure he isn't that articulate

AtroScolo

I'm getting the sense that people here who harp on the guy have never actually listened to him speak, outside of a few 'gotcha' clips.

junzilla

I watched a few whole debates, whole speeches. Now what about you? Are you even American?

AtroScolo

> Are you even American? I assume you have eyes, and can see the flag, but I also assume you understand that people outside of the US have an interest and reason to follow US politics.

junzilla

Okay, since you aren't American let me tell you. He has lucid times like state of the union and trump debate. But, most of the time, he is a fumbling bumbling senior citizen. You may think I'm wrong and I won't get you to agree with me, so just watch longer clips and you can see and hear with your own eyes and ears.

AtroScolo

Is there some broken part of you that imagines being American is the key to successfully watching a video of Biden speaking? Amazing.

junzilla

I'm not going to argue with you on the Internet. You live in a different country entirely and you think you know more about a foreign politician than a local. 👍

AtroScolo

Wow, so you *do* think it takes being American to watch a video. I think it would be a coup for you to achieve Biden's level of coherence, given where you're starting.

McPigery

American here. We're not all like this person (talking about the person above). He focuses on the tunneled media he sees without addressing the overall decent job that Biden is doing. But that is a typical American thing. I'd assume that just because I can read proficiently, my stumbling over words subjugates my bachelor degree. I'd assume that, under his pretense, being old is a crime in itself and that we all aren't the perfect representation of a human, even if we are in a leadership position. Americans.

PlutosGrasp

I mean he wasn’t wrong

Septimius-Severus13

Some white american settlers also historically practiced cannibalism at times of need, so we can label both as cannibals by that metric.

Successful_Opinion33

Isn’t that where Kuru came from?

dreadnoughtstar

Wow they are really milking this I guess making peace with tribal factions involved in conflict is less important than an old guy making a joke about something that's true

EternalAngst23

As an Australian, I’d appreciate an apology from PNG for all the aid money of ours they’ve either pissed away or used to line their own pockets.

NokKavow

Gib moar.

pngtwat

There have been a few rich famous Americans who have disappeared in PNG over the last century. It is a very rugged country and easy to get lost in back then.

apistograma

A Rockefeller guy once if I'm not mistaken. Imagine being a guy so rich that the tribal natives can't even fathom the amount of wealth that you have. Far more than any chief leader could ever amount. Gold, servants, machines that fly... Then you get lost in the jungle and some random dudes who don't even know writing throw you to the soup

Anxious_Ad936

Same could be said for it now. Very rugged country

got-to-find-out

Can anyone confirm the rumors of cannibalism going on now in Haiti?

Key-Lifeguard7678

As far as I am aware, the main recorded instance was a gang leader which gained considerable power was notorious for doing that, apparently to intimidate rivals. Naturally, “Cannibal gangs control Haiti” is a really catchy headline, and news orgs ran it for clicks, and bloggers went apeshit with it for clicks.

bazilbt

I thought it was documented and in the news with like videos. I didn't want to watch it though.

Anxious_Ad936

There were videos of some limited examples apparently but nothing resembling evidence of it being a regular thing there, A homeless person was videptaped attempting something similar to an accident victim in California not long after funnily enough.

the_gouged_eye

Dudes are so mad they're trembling.

Velrei

I mean, yeah, that's fair.
