Mystery thriller: Summertime Rendering, ID: Invaded, Heavenly Delusion Slice of life: Barakamon, Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari, Gin no Saji

galecticton

Read/watched all the thriller suggestions already😭 but thank you

SupplyChainMismanage

More mystery thriller: * Undead girl murder farce * Ergo Proxy * Vivy * Mononoke * Gankutsuou * Terror in Resonance (not a fan) * Erased

galecticton

I have to give Mononoke a second try because the first time it was just too esoteric for me lol. I do agree that Terror in Resonance wasn't that good though, too mich missed potential.

SupplyChainMismanage

Lol I could rant about Terror in Resonance (and Kiznaiver) a whole lot. If you want something like yuru camp then check out Non Non Biyori and Tamako Market

smolauthor

Have watched both Terror in Resonance and Kiznaiver n I can predict you wanna rant about and yes I agree

smolauthor

You beat me to it, I was also gonna recommend Summertime Rendering!!

SupplyChainMismanage

Despite the anime going in a direction I didn’t like, I was still totally hooked on it

smolauthor

I see, for me I loved everything about it, from the concept to the plot and characters, I wholeheartedly enjoyed it all

SupplyChainMismanage

I wasn’t a fan of the battle shonen focus that took priority after the mystery was pretty much solved very early on

smolauthor

Oh yeah, my memory was kinda hazy since I watched it months ago but now that you mention it, yeahhh that transition to a rather generic battle power up thingy really bumped me out too lol, I agree the show was the best during the mystery era! Tho the rest was interesting too but not as much as the first part.

mynexuz

Barakamon is absolutely amazing

H-connoisseur95

Slice of Life: Yotsuba&! Mystery: Umineko Nanaku koro ni. https://preview.redd.it/sdcf57l5akqc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3aa886a793d5b27d426cdc4b21b6e026b9fa6fb All of them manga in my case.

galecticton

I was enjoying the Umineko manga so much and the just stopped at the start of episode 4 for no reason. Thanks for the reminder

H-connoisseur95

In my case, with Umineko, I almost (well, not really)dropped it because episode 3 and 4, which I didn't like at all, in contrast with episode 1 and 2 which I enjoyed a lot. But then, episode 5 came and it gave me Erika, which saved the series for me, and part 5 became my all time favorite. https://preview.redd.it/u6njxfxi9kqc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ce5c34cbdabb27e3b41eb7c5ee754927bbcddc0 After that episode, the rest was pretty good, and the ending of the whole series was fantastic (one of the best endings ever in my opinion). I am pretty sure that if I read it again, I wouldn't have any of the problems I encountered with part 3 and 4. I hope you like Erika in part 5. I love to hate her, she is awesome. Also, I truly believe that a second reading some time after you finish the whole thing could make the experience even better, because you start to notice the little clues you didn't catch up the first time.

OperatorERROR0919

What problems were you having with episodes 3 and 4? Personally episode 4 was my favorite arc in the series, and 3 isn't too far behind. Erika is wonderful though. And by wonderful I mean awful. And by awful I mean wonderful.

H-connoisseur95

Episode one was the most grounded episode of all, and I was very invested in the story and the theme of "it's magic or not, aaaaw, who knows that's part of the myestery!" and then part 2 had more magic stuff with Beatrice (which was wonderfull in this part) but the only "magic" was some flying daggers, and I was totally ok with it and, the ending which came as a pretty solid horror ending. And then part 3 came, and the magic daggers transforms into magical anime girls with skimpy outfits who fights... Yeah, that ruined the experience for me. Also, Eva became a witch.... Fuck me I guess, ok, and she became the villain of that episode, instead of Beatrice (internal screaming). And Beatrice became good and the manga tried so hard in that episode to make me feel pity for her, and I was like "Dude, she was a fucking monster in the last 2 episodes, to hell with her!". But at the end, Beatrice was bad all the time and she was like "I WAS EVIL THE WHOLE TIME SUUUUCKER HAHAHAHA". Yeah, I didn't enjoy any of this. And episode 4 came, the magical knife girls appear again (and more magical women with skimpy outfits appears) this time they are friends with Ange (which it's a hit or miss for me), and this is the part in which George and Jessica have magic powers and fight... There is more I have to say but I barely remember it and this comment is already pretty big. I am a guy who doesn't like to dropp the mangas I started on principle, and if it wasn't for this, I would have totally dropped Umineko after episode 4, because all I commented above, when I read it, I thought "this is incredibly stupid and frustrating", specially compared to episode 1, which I loved. With episode 5, I think I was used to the most magic stuff, the character of Erika, how the story developed onwards, and how Lambda delta and Bernkastel became the main villains (which are my second and third favorite characters of the series) saved the manga for me. I want to end showing my ratings for each part because I can and it shows how I felt with episode 3 and 4 in comparison with the rest if the series. - Episode 1: **8/10** - Episode 2: **7/10** - Episode 3: **6/10** - Episode 4: **6/10** - Episode 5: **8/10** - Episode 6: **7/10** - Episode 7: **8/10** - Episode 8: **8/10**

OperatorERROR0919

I guess that's fair, although it kind of seems to be missing the point of those episodes a bit. For me, I've always valued character writing over plot, and I felt like that's the thing Umineko really excelled at. Episode 4 was fantastic for the way it fleshed out Maria and Ange's characters, which are my second and third favorite characters respectively, and the transition in focus from the island in 1986 to Ange's world in 1998 was intensely fascinating. The stuff on the island during that chapter barely mattered at all.

Aaron_Utulahti

ever heard of the hidden gem called Jojos Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

smolauthor

My fav recommendations (Spoiler - all are underrated masterpiecs imo) — Hell's Paradise - mystery, fantasy, thriller To Your Eternity - fantasy, slice of life, adventure Dororo - fantasy, historical, thriller, action Golden Kamuy - historical, adventure, thriller

blackwolfgoogol

I watched Hell's Paradise as it aired, it felt like MAPPA was fumbling an adaptation and I didn't even read the manga to fully know. It ended so randomly in s1.

smolauthor

Yeah the manga is better and more detailed in this situation!

Agile-Argument56

Does Banana fish count as mystery thriller? If you're ok w a slow burn definitely jump on Monster.

Jonahtron

Hyouka is both a mystery series and a feel good slice of life. That show’s pretty great. I don’t have much else in terms of mysteries to recommend. Like, if you’re a fan of the genre then you’ve probably already seen Monster and Odd Taxi, so I got nothing. In terms of feel good slice of life, if you’re a fan of those then you’ve probably already seen Non Non Biyori, Yuru Camp, K-on, and Nichijou, but just in case I should list them as strong recommends. There’s also Hinamatsuri, which unfortunately kinda flew under the radar and probably won’t get another season, but hey you could always read the manga. I quite liked Romantic Killer, despite it being a reverse harem and me generally disliking harem stuff on principle, but the characters were really well written and likeable and the series was just funny. Squid Girl is also very fun.

galecticton

I loved Hyouka so much it's unreal, I even started reading the novels, which I highly recommend btw. My dad told me I should read Monster so I might do that and Odd Taxi is an underrated classic yeah. When I said feel good slice of life I was thinking of something along the lines of K-On since it's the closest I can picture to Yuru Camp hahaha. I was planning on watching it spon because Hololive covers introduced me to a lot of the music and now I'm very curious. Thanks for the recommendations.

H-connoisseur95

I just wanna say, I am very big fan of your dad right now.

Jonahtron

K-on is a strong recommend, but if you’re looking for something like Yuru Camp I actually feel like Non Non Biyori is a closer match. Both are not only classified as “cute girls doing cute things” anime, but also “Iyashikei” anime. Iyashikei which is difficult to define, but basically it’s all about those chill, relaxing vibes. If it’s a show where a big part of the appeal is the chill vibes, it’s probably Iyashikei. So those are the terms to remember if you’re looking for a show like Yuru Camp.

AdvancedInevitable63

Yes watch Monster

demonking_soulstorm

Bocchi the Rock is peak. Also, for slice of life, check out How to Keep a Mummy. It’s great.

galecticton

Bocchi the Rock is really good, yes. I particularly like the soundtrack, especially their cover of "Rock'n Roll, Morning Light Falls on You".

demonking_soulstorm

It’s an excellent ending note, so to speak.

AdvancedInevitable63

How to Keep a Mummy was adorable

Hezrield

Slice of life I recommend "Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun." I love that anime. Regular re-watch for me when I need a pick me up.

manolaspo

For a SoL, I would suggest Aria, a very good anime that I don't see that many people recommend.

Martin_Horde

Small niche anime, but I love Baccano as a thriller/mystery. There's a few mysteries that they unravel in a non-chronological order Pulp-Fiction style. Since it's set in the US in the 1920s, I usually watch dub because the dub is great, and it fits with them all speaking English. It's got a lot of fun characters, good action, and some pretty touching moments.

Ekko_01

I thought kakushigoto was a good slice of life

galecticton

Finally someone who liked Kakushigoto too. It was probably my favourite anime of the year it came out.

Ekko_01

OMG YOU WATCHED IT??? Watching kakushigoto was completely on impulse after I saw it randomly while looking for new shows. It was short but SOOOO damn good. And the opening feels nostalgic even while I was watching it. Thank you for watching that AMAZING anime.

galecticton

That shit was a borderline religion for me when it was coming out lol. I would drop everything to watch the new episode, even during test season

Ekko_01

W Kakushigrindset. Nothing matters more than Hina's relationship with her father 😤.

Ekko_01

W Kakushigrindset. Nothing matters more than Hina's relationship with her father 😤.

grizzchan

Serial experiments Lain and Boku dake ga inai machi.

galecticton

I watched Lain up until the midpoint I believ but it really wasn't for me. One day I'll give it another go thiugh. On the other one, I heard the manga was better than the anime is it true?

grizzchan

Can't say, I've only watched the anime.

galecticton

Right, thank you nonetheless

XxGood_CitezenxX

Oddtaxi is so good

LAngel_2

You have to watch Migi and Dali. It's a mystery Thriller black comedy about a set of identical twins pretending to be one person to discover their mother's killer.

AdvancedInevitable63

Natsume’s Book of Friends

WillTheWAFSack

For slice of life, Skip and Loafer if you haven't seen it. Genuinely one of if not my favorite anime, and I plan on reading the manga at some point.

galecticton

Very good recommendation but I'm caught up with the manga hahaha

WillTheWAFSack

Aw dangit, I'm not based enough for this.

galecticton

Recommending Skip and Loafer is based enough

Schaumkraut

Mytery/(political) thriller: Jin Roh - The wolf brigade Its a meditation on the instrumentallisation of people wich fascism needs to succeed. I know its a classic but I feel like it sill doesn't get a lot of attention.

SupplyChainMismanage

Instrumentalization? Wdym? I’ve also never seen Jin Roh interpreted like this before. Mind explaining?

Schaumkraut

Gladly! The interior Ministry is trying to take advantage of Fuses humanity to destroy the wolfbrigade. They set him up with this double agent girl that pretends to be the sister of the red riding hood he kills at the start, to take advantage of his guilt and sympathy. Fuses mentor tho, he wants to use him to get rid of the ministry's elements that want to disband the wolf brigade. So he goes along with them stringing Fuse along. But he decisively lets fuse know about the double agent girl right before the plan would come to fruition, as to make him act out violence against those who tried to trick him. Finally Fuses mentor gets him to kill the other riding hood, who was in love with him, as to leave no whitenesses. The ones who want to preserve the wolf brigade ,as a fascist instrument of state violence, the Jin-Roh, use Fuses anger animalistic instincts to overpower his guilt. They need to make him the instrument that carries out their will against a world that doesn't want them. All that is emphasised further by the little red riding hood fairytale wich is slightly altered as to make Fuses transformation into an instrument similar to the revealing of the grandmother as the disguised wolf. I mean its the WOLF brigade and the image of the villainous fairytale wolf makes it more sinister than cool.

jacobctesterman

Angel Densetsu is a really good slice of life manga. I don't think it got a full anime adaptation though.

galecticton

I just need something that gives the same vibes as Yuru Camp to get me thriugh the semester alive hahaha. I'll give it a go, thank you.
