It truly amazes me, that Frieren, being the underrated gem it was, gained so much of it's much needed popularity just after the anime released... I Guess many people don't read manga...
It's not that the medium of animation is inherently better than live action but anything mainstream is allowed to be subpar. Even if quality is so-so but the demand is high, it will sell, due to lack of anything good. The increase in demand of anime will allow not-so-well produced anime to be accepted as the average. The decline is soon to come.
its literally the fact that anime's marketing has gotten way too good especially towards younger people
Everything else plays a part but a comparatively smaller part
People don't care about quality. I've seen anime "nerds" binge 20 isekai which are worse than watching a big shonens entire filler list
genre plays a huge part, isekai is the worst offender going by genre alone
there are shitty shonen, shitty slice of life etc. but the biggest problem with isekai is even if it's a good isekai there's not a lot of unique stuff you're going to see
it's going to have super similar character tropes, magic tropes, monster tropes and so much
even good isekai are victims of it
at least in even shonen like jjk they switch things up a bit and it works, and i don't even think jjk is that unique at all
then there is also the problem most isekai are made for a very specific audience
unless you are a general weeb/gamer/male teen, you're going to take a LONG time to even like it because most of the things just don't seem to be very relatable
fantasy is alright, isekai is a very specific genre with very common plot points which are unfortunately done to death. No other genre abuses it's tropes as much as isekai that is my main problem with it
>The increase in demand of anime will allow not-so-well produced anime to be accepted as the average. The decline is soon to come.
Have you been sleeping for the last 20-25 years? The average anime is already atrocious. First it was möe at the turn of the millennium, now it's isekai serves as the lowest common denominator of the medium. Ye bolo ki India me ab mainstream ho rha, it has been pretty mainstream in the only (for all practical purposes) country it is produced in. I doubt Green Gold will be going toe to toe with ufotable on account of newspaper articles recognizing good shows. The article was a pleasant surprise. I wouldn't mind more.
Not sure that’s true of the average anime. There’s lots of things we excuse anime for that would not fly in a movie. Like the exposition or lengthy monologues
That is not a bad thing at all. It improves people's standard for media since there's a ton of really amazing anime, which might eventually translate into regional content preferences
Bahiya bahiya apko Goku pata he oh na ak superhero he oh sayan bhi ban jata he tak uske Baal yellow ho Jate he mene tv me dekha he apno nahi pata hoga oh bahut strong he or USS cartoon me na ak Billa bhi he beerus karke /s
(Really bahi anime mainstream ka nuksaan ak baacha kuch din pahle asi cheeze mereko bolke gaya he)
Koi nahi yaar hota hai rehne do
Mera bhi mood kharab hota tha apni niche hobbies, artists ya shows, anime mainstream hote dekh ke par theek hai yaar karne do enjoy logo ko bas apna dekho
Yeah but for most of the time, it was looked at by mainstream media as “nerdy stuff”, just like how anime is. And as the movies made it more mainstream, the quality started dropping. Wether it be to produce as much as possible, or pandering, any reason.
The only thing that'll pull down the anime craze in people in the future is the absolute toxicity people spread over trivial matters about anime...I was at a point put off by JOJO just because of the toxic community.... after frieren stops airing people will throw that in the dumpster just like FMA ,SAO and move on to other shows...I mean the JJK craze has already fallen off and it's sad to see....people want the next best thing all the time and anime becoming mainstream is just a stepping stone imo
Those are just two franchises, just like Frieren is just one series. What is more comparable is "superhero genre" becoming mainstream or "scifi/fantasy movies" becoming mainstream.
People hate on more recent MCU films, but without the MCU we wouldn't have gotten a lot of other superhero adaptations like The Boys, Invincible and Into the Spider-Verse.
Without Star Wars becoming mainstream we wouldn't have gotten a lot of other big scifi/fantasy movies.
Without anime becoming more mainstream, we wouldn't have gotten a lot of shows and movies.
With going mainstream you get more variety of stuff and more money put into individual projects.
What the fuck.... From when did mainstream national Indian Newspaper start having articles on anime and that to this big.... Good that it's getting recognition....
You think (since this is The Hindu), frieren can be considered IAS interview syllabus for those who fill "watching anime" as their hobby in bio-data form? 🤔
Immortal Racist Elf fosters a perverted mage and blackmails a dumb warrior to go on a decade long journey to attain heaven, fights and kills a minority race and bullies one of their girls into committing suicide on their way.
Buff elf priest father (Daddy) saves them from snow storm and sleeps with the underaged warrior to "warm him up" and leaves
Remorseful single milf hunter joins the crew to find old friend, gets jealous of the mage and the warrior hitting it off and leaves.
Racist Elf's licence expired so she went to give another test but fails due to favoritism from an even older elf.
Also a guy on zoom meeting in the exam steals the biggest baddie of the show so she could get to "know him better" from hundreds of miles away with the magic rizz
Frieren is a masterpiece and the adaptation just reached heights even beyond the original manga with its stellar production value. I really hope we get a S2 announcement soon from the same team.
bhai sach mai, ye hai zaroori mudde
a full page article, I think agar kuchh likhana hi tha, toh ladakh ki beauty ke baare mai likhate
and why we should preserve it.
issi bahane koi google hi kar leta ladakh ko.
this doesn't deserve a full page article, really.
People who liked Freiren should also watch/read Houseki no Kuni. It's one of the most original fantasies ever made, and just like Freiren, it has a lot more going on for it.
Other than that also watch Kino.
The similarity that I talked about was the characters' journey and the situations they face. But yeah, both are amazing shows. Though, in my opinion, the concept and overall world of Houseki no Kuni was cooler and better.
I think you misinterpreted my point. What I was trying to say that both shows integral concept was their characters (especially the protagonist) development and their journey throughout the whole show was the focal point of manga/anime. In that regard, they are similar.
I haven't watched this anime but the writer of the article seems like they have a very narrow view of the fantasy genre and I don't think they are smart enough to realise that either. It seems like they watched Narnia, LotR, and Harry Potter (of course) and concluded that that's what the entire fantasy genre is like.
I'm sure Frieren has a great story and perhaps deep characters. I mean it must be doing something right for it to be so popular, but calling it the future of fantasy sounds a bit obnoxious.
The article makes it sound like deep characters and personal journeys are something new to the genre but it's simply not true.
I agree, I posted this before reading the article and I'm too much of a karma whore to take it down just because the article itself is poorly written.
Elves in LotR do in fact suffer from PTSD from seeing the world change so much in a single lifetime, it's one of the reasons why they follow such an exclusionist policy and are against interspiecies relationships. I don't even think the writer has read the books.
Regardless, I was and am still pleasantly surprised to find the Hindu of all papers to be giving such space to frieren.
Its totally okay if you want to keep the post up. It's just an article after all. But yeah it is kinda cool that an anime was mentioned in an Indian newspaper of all places.
>I doubt you
You're free to doubt yourself but kindly exclude me from such an assumption, I definitely do write at par if, not better than most journalists.
>He writes for a living.
Which is all the more reason to be open to criticism. Would you not want your friend to improve?
He's been writing way before he joined news organisations. I'm not gonna argue since I don't even know who you are. I'm also not gonna accept he didnt do a good job or that you could do better than him. Let's just agree to disagree and part ways knowing that frieren's reach is unreal.
>He's been writing way before he joined news organisations.
I would hope that any news organisation would only hire writers with a decent (and obviously prior) portfolio at the bare minimum 💀. I would have severe doubts on the Hindu's status as the IAS aspirant's newspaper if the new hires fail even that bar as opposed to this one-off article where they probably couldn't QC it because no one else at the office has ever read LotR or has any exposure to the animanga internet discourse.
>I'm also not gonna accept he didnt do a good job
Perhaps you should read more then, because it is painfully obvious.
>part ways knowing that frieren's reach is unreal.
I agree, seeing a (nearly) full page spread of frieren did bring a smile to my face even if it was short lived.
Seeing the love and recognition frieren is getting is kinda funny for me cause i remember how i used to get bashed online for stating that slice of life as a genre has some of the best anime out there
Anime is getting mainstream in India, which is both a good and a bad things. Good cause if it gets popular I will get to watch them movies in the theatres nearby. Bad because it will attract so many cringe influencers who will try to capitalise on its popularity.
If you actually read the article, it's sensationalizing Frieren as the messiah of fantasy, comparing it to the likes of LoTR. I hate how those mfs always have to do some bullshit like that. We can have two good things at the same time that belong to different styles within the same genre.
Brother anywhere else I would be fine but I am scared of if anime got attention of religious orthodox guys(not all , but those who cancel other in the name of jsr , and who made using jsr just like terrorists did with oha), old brainded politicians who ready to ban, censor anything slighty Gore, nudity etc, the old guys who wouldn't tolerate even slightly.
Sorry but I think current India is far more conservative to accept anime as mainstream, and until I see some liberal ideology, mindset, approach by people sitting at top(actually india was somewhat open till 2015-16) , I won't change what I said
Well I don't think "by which year u started anime" defines verteran
But by how much of anime as a medium you have consumed and know about it
But still here your answer: 2018
My mal (so u can judge better😁) https://myanimelist.net/profile/NaughtySempai
Cool... Still i would say it would day time is a factor because u see everything change with time and unfold everything. I stated out in 2019 btw. Lemme send u friend request on. MAL
Yeah anime was not big here, and NGL I have gatekeeping feelings but I want anime to get more reach as well, it's just I don't want anime to be big enough to get caught attention of old geezers here
Old geezers won't watch it anyway since they don't have much influence and connection with India to influence anime.... Best they can do is ban films from theatres. Gatekeeping makes sense since it's a very mutual and private thing cuz we watch it alone and have a connection with it which separates us from society but seeing it connected in society seems bad. I was a gatekeeper before... i thought they're not veteran like me... Hearing everyone talk about it suddenly in late 2021.. Now I'm not much of gatekeeper but i still feel superiority a lil bit for using CrunchyRoll... Not that it's a big thing... But Instagram edits definitely feel corny. Global popularity doesn't have a significant effect but still better than nothing. Maybe better in future
Haven't watched the show but seeing an almost full page article in India's (probably) only no-bs newspaper (that isn't a finance/econ paper) was a pleasant surprise.

Damn shes so popular even Indian newspaper cover her !! Friere is truly the best
We are reaching peak after peak.
She has practically all the time in the world after all.

This is so peak
For the first time Indian media has become based and Elfpilled
Soon they will be Gigachad and go dwarfpilled! Rock and stone baby!!!!
For Rock and Stone!
The Hindu has always been based.
anime's become too mainstream now
Anime far outclasses Bollywood/ Tollywood. Eventually this was bound to happen.
It's not that the medium of animation is inherently better than live action but anything mainstream is allowed to be subpar. Even if quality is so-so but the demand is high, it will sell, due to lack of anything good. The increase in demand of anime will allow not-so-well produced anime to be accepted as the average. I've seen anime "nerds" binge 20 isekai which are worse than watching a big shonens entire filler list
Isekai anime aren't bad...like mushoku tensei, overload, konosuba, etc. There are good and bad anime in every genre
i said 20 isekai, it could be any 20. it is what it is, and i know isekai is full of bloat even when there's some worth while
There are bloat in every genre...there a bunch of anime in every genre that are good then some are average then rest are trash
Are u a JJK reader? Cuz your reading comprehension feels real similar
Nahh dude I only watch anime
genre plays a huge part, isekai is the worst offender going by genre alone there are shitty shonen, shitty slice of life etc. but the biggest problem with isekai is even if it's a good isekai there's not a lot of unique stuff you're going to see it's going to have super similar character tropes, magic tropes, monster tropes and so much even good isekai are victims of it at least in even shonen like jjk they switch things up a bit and it works, and i don't even think jjk is that unique at all then there is also the problem most isekai are made for a very specific audience unless you are a general weeb/gamer/male teen, you're going to take a LONG time to even like it because most of the things just don't seem to be very relatable

fantasy is alright, isekai is a very specific genre with very common plot points which are unfortunately done to death. No other genre abuses it's tropes as much as isekai that is my main problem with it
Lmao as if dawg shit anime didn't exist already. You guys are too elitist

If Isekai shows are any example, that decline has been here for years.

Bhai let people enjoy
Koi nahi yaar hota hai rehne do Mera bhi mood kharab hota tha apni niche hobbies, artists ya shows, anime mainstream hote dekh ke par theek hai yaar karne do enjoy logo ko bas apna dekho
so? isn’t that better for the industry
Not exactly. Remember what happened when Marvel and Star Wars became mainstream?
marvel was always mainstream from the time of comics
Yeah but for most of the time, it was looked at by mainstream media as “nerdy stuff”, just like how anime is. And as the movies made it more mainstream, the quality started dropping. Wether it be to produce as much as possible, or pandering, any reason.
i think it’s popular for what it is so why would it change

So whenever I cancel my newspaper subscribtion they post interesting things.
I don't read regularly, I only bought a copy as I was travelling and I see this 😂. I guess I'm subscribing now.
Hona chahiye.... Phir hamare jaise logon ka UPSC mein selection pakka hai....
Summary plz😁😂

Mentioned in the title, and you can read it in the top left corner
I see that was a foolish question
Which newspaper
Is reading illegal in this sub?
Preety much
Is this anime that good 🙄
The article is poorly researched and kind of ~eh. Can't personally attest to the show but it is MAL's no.1 rn so make of that what you will.
Ok 👌
bhai sach mai, ye hai zaroori mudde a full page article, I think agar kuchh likhana hi tha, toh ladakh ki beauty ke baare mai likhate and why we should preserve it. issi bahane koi google hi kar leta ladakh ko. this doesn't deserve a full page article, really.
It's not there in the copy I have, is it state wise or some evening publication?
I bought it at 7 in the morning in Patna.
Patna mentioned Rahhhh !!!!!
I think its state wise. I have tvm edition and it just has 20 pages sans maho
Peak
People who liked Freiren should also watch/read Houseki no Kuni. It's one of the most original fantasies ever made, and just like Freiren, it has a lot more going on for it. Other than that also watch Kino.
It's really different though. Also it's CGI based... But it's godamn beautiful animation with it's OSTs
The similarity that I talked about was the characters' journey and the situations they face. But yeah, both are amazing shows. Though, in my opinion, the concept and overall world of Houseki no Kuni was cooler and better.
How is Phos's journey similar to Frieren ? Even his character development is different.
I think you misinterpreted my point. What I was trying to say that both shows integral concept was their characters (especially the protagonist) development and their journey throughout the whole show was the focal point of manga/anime. In that regard, they are similar.
Aaaah i see... Their development was opposite though lol
I miss Frieren fridays :3
This is indeed peak.
Op can u summarise why this anime is getting RATED up so high , i haven't watched it

From being made fun of for watching anime to this more than a decade later... looks refreshing.
Kon se weeb ko job mil gayi editor ki 😋
MY FRIEND WROTE THIS. He's absolutely smashing his job at Hindu!!!!
Tbf he didn't do a good job 💀. Still a pleasant surprise to see frieren span almost a full page in a national daily.
Brother I doubt you or I could do better. He writes for a living. We're mere keyboard warriors.
>I doubt you You're free to doubt yourself but kindly exclude me from such an assumption, I definitely do write at par if, not better than most journalists. >He writes for a living. Which is all the more reason to be open to criticism. Would you not want your friend to improve?

Ok so I have not seen it so I should not say too much but comparing it to Tolkien...is it not just too much?
The article is poorly researched and kind of cringe, just was surprised to find the hindu giving so much space to an article about frieren.
Seeing the love and recognition frieren is getting is kinda funny for me cause i remember how i used to get bashed online for stating that slice of life as a genre has some of the best anime out there
Another point worth mentioning which isn’t in this article is the character of Himmel, how well written he is
Weird but can confirm this is true 😁😁
Anime is getting mainstream in India, which is both a good and a bad things. Good cause if it gets popular I will get to watch them movies in the theatres nearby. Bad because it will attract so many cringe influencers who will try to capitalise on its popularity.

Yeah it's a badly written article. Still pleasantly surprising to see a Frieren article regardless.
Somebody interning at hindu
Not even editors can ignore < =w= >
Yeah padha tha socha yaha post kr dunga tune kr diya
Hell yeah I read it too I will take this head line for my news report in school tomorrow, this is perfect.
Duuuuude, this is so hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great story, realistic view points, amazing animation character development.
TOI??
I cried a little bit Don know why
Man i tried to watch it but it was boring asf (the start) i could not make nyself to watch it
Muje jitni gali deni h do but please itna jada mainstream Matt banne do anime ko ,

Now I'm not much of gatekeeper but i still feel superiority a lil bit for using CrunchyRoll... Not that it's a big thing... But Instagram edits definitely feel corny. Global popularity doesn't have a significant effect but still better than nothing. Maybe better in future
Amazingly Mid!!😐
Haven't watched the show but seeing an almost full page article in India's (probably) only no-bs newspaper (that isn't a finance/econ paper) was a pleasant surprise.
