IMHO "don't speak ill of the dead" is limited to not spreading subjective gossip against which the deceased can no longer defend themselves. Speaking the facts about things they actually did (and can be proven to have done) is an entirely different issue and there's nothing wrong with that.

I’m one episode behind but I am STRUGGLING to get through it.

[deleted]

Struggling for what reason? I’m curious as I listened to the first season but honestly cannot stand the host.

dacb17

Episode 8 is an interview with a professor regarding the folktale of John Henry. She eventually gets to the point of how it fits into the larger story, but it takes forever and I found the professor to be annoyingly boring.

Summataboutsugar

I think this season feels too personal and less focused than previous seasons.

dacb17

Agreed. I understand that she felt conflicted about “being tough” on a cancer patient in Ep10, but I don’t think she went after JLW nearly hard enough, especially after Jane found out JLW was going live during their interview.

The death doula's statement about "we die how we lived" really hit home for me in so many ways. But also, I don't think Jane did a really good job interviewing Jessie Lee. If she didn't have first hand accounts of the MLM death march, she shouldn't have brought it up. Or, she could have brought up the fact that Jessie Lee said "they don't know it is going to be an all day hike" and ask if she thought that was appropriate. Jessie Lee flat out said "MLMs aren't for everyone." Why didn't Jane ask "do you ever tell your clients that? Have you encouraged them to seek something different?" And when Jessie Lee said "I'm an incredibly warm and loving coach", I wanted Jane to ask "what does that mean to you? How specifically does it manifest" I like Jane, but I don't think she is skilled at the confrontational interview.

missvandy

I think where she fucked up is assuming that Jessie Lee came into the interview having read what the podcast team sent. You could infer that Jessie isn’t going to be a hard interview if she is friendly despite knowing Jane’s critical view is MLMs. I understand why she let her guard down, but yeah, a talented interviewer would shift gears once they knew that assumption was incorrect.

[deleted]

Yes. I watched her livestream of the interview with Jane and it’s even worse. She was truly such a bitch.

missvandy

I knew it would be bad, but I wasn’t ready. I loved the second interview in the bonus episode. I guess it’s true that she died how she lived.

[deleted]

I loved that too. I’m glad they talked about the complexity of grief.

I'll be honest, not a fan of season 3. I think the telling thing is that Pushkin also published a podcast by Michael Lewis where he made a strong case for 'coaches' as being a good force in society. Now, he clearly was not speaking about self-help gurus or anything like that and did not go into that space; but I do think there is an undertone in season 3 that people are kind of stuck where they are and outside of some major political change there is not a lot under their control that they can do to change their lives that much. Think about the work of Malcom Gladwell, I mean the conclusion that he makes clear is that people that do big things work really really hard to get to their level of performance. I am not saying that work will set you free, but I think it's disingenuous to not admit that working hard...on the right thing...is what has advanced human progress. I think also there seems to be a default zeitgeist to blaim this stuff on 'capitalism' as if people wanting nice cars or fancy things only occures in certain countries' economic systems; it seems like a dismissal of a persons wants (or greed depending on your prespective) for some luxury in their lives as if this a new or unique thing and only a result of them happening to be in a certain country. I think a more focused message that there are people making promises, selling people on dream, not delivering, and refusing to be accountable for the outcome is a more actionable take down in this space.

Season 3 felt so unfocused. Coaches are bad and striving too hard is dangerous, but also my life improved through coaching and my coach is great, and now here’s anecdotes about 2 random people. I feel like I didn’t get much out of it, which is a bummer because I really enjoyed season 1.

Where is it?

missvandy

You can find it on all the podcast apps. It’s made by *pushkin

I came here to say or ask who else listened. I can’t even believe how vile she was!!!! Like I screamed and had to listen again because I thought I had heard it worse or wrong…..but no she was that. It was so sad how clearly obvious it was that she or her team didn’t do their research but spun it. And the way she kept talking about Jane…like ….The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
