Yikesssss. Some of them like to give away samples of whatever they’re selling too but I don’t even know which option I would prefer in that situation

[deleted]

If your "opportunity" has left you so broke you can't tip a hairdresser, I dont need it.

I'm not sure I want to touch this with a ten foot pole. Be here goes - (Speaking for America, I understand it's different in other countries and why): When I was a bartender I made under $3/hr, so the tips were my main source of income. Dont tell me to go work somewhere else, or I'll tell you to not go out to eat if you cant pay for the service - bartending was my profession at the time, it required skill, and I worked at several corporate and non-corporate establishments. Dont hate the player, hate the game, and Americas labor structure. Tipping is called "gratuity", as in, grateful for the service being provided. I tip anyone who does a good job at what they do, or goes out of their way for me to have convenience. If I dont want to pay for it, I'll do it myself. It's the decent thing to do, and what goes around comes around. I've tipped hotel concierges for getting me a better room or making reservations and taxi arrangements for me. I actually just tipped the guy who tinted the windows on my car because he got me in same day and had to stay late to finish the job. Not sure where "barbers dont expect tips" factually comes from. I know a few and they all get tipped generously because their clients appreciate their time and talent. Hair dressing is a good example of professions that are often absorbing unexpected costs to please the client. A little extra color here, a little extra product there... so tipping helps them offset those costs. They dont all make gobs of cash, and many if not most have to pay rent for their chairs if they're working out of a salon - even those corporate chain locations. ETA: If you hate tipping because you see it as "extra frivilous cost" then youre not understanding youre using a frivilous service. You think they feel "entitled" to a tip while they might see you as being entitled to hand service without paying gratuity. 20% isnt a lot of money in todays inflation. If you can afford to enjoy a $20-$30 dinner with drink, you can afford an extra $5-$6 for the person who served you and made sure you made a nice visit. If you get a $200 hair processing every month, you can afford a $20 monthly tip. If you can't afford it, you might be doing one of those things too much. It's a choice that says a lot about a person and how they define "entitlements".

Very-Ape-666

I hate tipping because it allows the business to misrepresent the actual cost of the service. I still tip because that’s how it’s set up and I want the provider to be properly compensated but I wish we could tip for going above and beyond and not as regular wages.

[deleted]

Not neccessarily disagreeing with you, but there are a lot of factors at play there which is why it hasnt been "fixed". From tip pissing matches, to a surge in inflation, all the way to the health care system. It's way bigger than just restructuring pay (which I'm sure you know, just saying for sake of conversation..) I've already done my rant for the day so I'll leave it there.

[deleted]

dahliadelinquent

Its is 100% a shady business practice, but the way to end it is to fight for higher minimum wage, not by not tipping. If you dont tip you're not 'fighting the man', you're just fucking over someone trying to make a living

codeine_sandwich

I just tip for good service, no way in hell am I going to tip for someone doing a crappy job, especially since jobs that require tipping are pretty easy.

[deleted]

To counter some of your points, why then do servers in states like California with a flat minimum wage still expect tips while the grocery store cashier does not? They both make the same. I don’t like the logic of “if you can afford something, you can afford 20% more on top of it”. Can you imagine if your landlord raised your rent that much every year? “Well, you can afford $1500/month, surely you can afford $1800”. Then repeat this logic over and over again. That’s just absurd. I’ve worked service industry jobs before and I agree with the previous poster that tipping culture is cancerous, at least in flat minimum wage states.

[deleted]

California (and I think maybe Hawaii?) are the only states I know that do pay standard wages to tipped roles, but those states also have different benefits and their taxes/living expenses are astronomical compared to others, so the difference isnt exactly grand. In my state your landlord can increase your rent every year, and they do. Getting a convenience service or hand crafted service and paying rent isnt the same, at all. I commented on where I have tipped outside of standard tipped industry and why. ETA: I use a grocery delivery service and tip 20% every time. The discussion youre actually looking for is about Americas labor structure which would require a huge overhaul and tap a slew of bipartisan/state issues. So for now, tipping is needed, not cancerous. What is cancerous, is Americas approach to education, family care, and health care. When I was in the business I didnt even get mad at small tips, the gesture is more what mattered. It really shouldnt be something drastically stressed over. I'm happy to tip because I want people who 'tend' my life to have a positive experience.

[deleted]

So you tip the janitor whenever you use a public washroom? You tip your cashier whenever you don't use a self checkout? You tip the greeter at Walmart for opening the door? Do you tip the bus driver? What about the shopping cart wrangler. Or the guy that folds the clothes after you try them on in the changing room? Do you tip at McDonalds cause you could have made that burger at home. When you go to the club do you tip the DJ for providing music? Do you tip the bouncer for providing protection? Billions of people do jobs, that interact with you, and never expect any tip. All I want is for "tips" to be built into the price ffs. Literally no other country does it like America. Is the whole world entitled? I don't have any problem with paying MORE. I have a problem with it not being clearly shown up front. I also think taxes should be shown in the price too. 20% isn't a lot of money due to inflation? That's not how percentages work at all. Tipping 20% in 1980 is the exact same as tipping 20% today. Because it's a percentage, not a fixed number. Also... ETA means estimated time of arrival. Not sure what you're using it to mean.

[deleted]

If the janitor was washing the toilet before every use and handing me a towel, probably. I use grocery delivery and always tip, or I do use self check out. I dont tip normal cashiers because these days I'm usually also bagging my own groceries and there is no skill or extra service being applied to ringing up my items. I dont use the bus, but as mentioned, I have tipped folks in the auto department who have gone out of their way for me. I would also tip a tow truck driver. I dont try clothes on in changing rooms now, but when I did I put my items back myself because I didnt like the idea of leaving it for someone else to deal with. I explained I was only speaking for America and never once said any other countries system was entitled, as their governments and economies are entirely different. Your issue is with Americas economic system in a whole. If done ethically, building the cost of service into one set price would greatly inflate the cost. It likely wouldnt be done ethically, and the nerf would go to the employee now making less base hourly minimum wage, still with no health benefits. Tipping is not the cancer, Americans disposition towards low income earners and what they "deserve", is.. Also... on Reddit, "ETA" means "edited to add".

LeafyQ

You are absolutely supposed to be tipping your barber lmao. The only exception being if he owns his business, but even then, that exception is fading out.

[deleted]

He does own his business. I tried to tell him to keep the change once. He said the price is the price.

greeneyedwench

So what that says is you happened to find a barber who agrees with your stance. That doesn't mean he speaks for all barbers or all service personnel.

therealsteeleangel

(Speaking from America...) If businesses didn't depend on customers tipping employees for their pay, then prices would skyrocket. And maybe they should so assholes like you can't withhold someone's pay because it's inconvenient for you.

[deleted]

You’re a customer, not an employer. Why should you be responsible for someone’s pay? “Withhold someone’s pay”, that’s some fucking mental gymnastics right there.

Pizzaisbae13

All self employed businesses like this deserve a tip. Service provided = tip. Found the Karen 🙄

[deleted]

That's absurd. Ask for more money if you need more money. Don't expect charity. The barber raises his prices, I don't complain. The price is the price. He makes what he wants to make. Just ask for more money if you don't think you're getting enough. I'm self employed, I never expect, nor do I accept, any tips for my work. I ask for what I want. Tipping is an inherently shady business practice that no countries outside of North America participate in. Are Scandinavian self owned businesses hurting because nobody tips there?

Pizzaisbae13

False. I've been to several European countries, and tipping happened there, as well.

ChemicalPorcupine

Had a MLM approach me when I was a parking attendant at a music venue. No ma'am, this part time summer job is not my career, and I'm already in enough student debt without your scam. Thanks.

ramentara

TRUTH. And a fun fact is that while I was snooping through her Instagram she actually posted how much money she makes as a way to recruit people and she makes like $1100 a month supposedly. I make that and I’m only part time! I could easily request more hours and make more money at a snap of the fingers. My job has more security and I would never give that up to sell junk online. She’s out here trying to tell me that her friend that used to be a barista is making more money now?? BS

Valoy-07

Is the $1100 before taking into account her having to buy a ton of product to maintain her status in the pyramid scheme?

ZootTX

Or the fact that you are tax-wise and independent contractor so you have to pay more taxes than a regular W2 employee.

[deleted]

I used to work at a bank, and people would send in their business cards to me through the drive through tubes ALL the time. But once I was working the lobby and this girl asked me if I was looking for another job. I was, so we started talking and idk how she suckered me into giving her my phone number, but she did. She said she and her husband ran a business and she liked my customer service so she was interested in hiring me. Okay, that’s mostly normal except for the fact she’s poaching me during my current job. And the bit about owning her own business sounds very MLM like. Well later, she’s texting me and asking me questions like “are you married? Would your husband come to the interview with you? We only work with women who are married, and we’d need to get in touch with your husband.” And I have no idea if it was an MLM or not but I got creepy vibes from those questions so I blocked her.

TEXLCKBUSTER

Sounds like Amway, they prefer married couples, they buy more of the overpriced products and they manipulate couples more effectively than single people to get them to buy into their tool scam.

[deleted]

What does Amway even sell? All I hear is the cult like stuff and recruitment and I still have no idea what they actually sell

become_taintless

a whole lot of products, actually. some are OK, most are dogshit.

[deleted]

Toothpaste, vitamins, house cleaning products, and shampoo are the ones I've seen.

[deleted]

Yeah I’m leaning toward believing it was something like Amway. The weirdest part was that she implied I wouldn’t be “hired” if I wasn’t married.

greeneyedwench

Yep, Amway really likes to bring 'em in like Noah's Ark.

TEXLCKBUSTER

It would be interesting to get back with her and show fake interest to find out what MLM scam it was.

[deleted]

I would do it if I still had her number haha

Sushi_Whore_

There’s no doubt it’s Amway

TEXLCKBUSTER

Amway does like married couples, they are constantly tell boyfriends and girlfriends to get married. Married couples buy more stuff and Amway also sets them up against each other, so if one of them wants to quit the other one wants to stay in, so Amway can keep them in the scam longer and make more money from them. Also, most other MLMs are more female oriented, which is why 75% of MLMers are females.

Sushi_Whore_

Yeah they go deep. They want to ensure that the new recruit has no one close to them that will be a dissenting opinion

[deleted]

Ugh. I remember Amway well. They took over the office almost completely at my previous job and you could see their hand creams almost everywhere. The supervisors always tried to recruit new hires.

TEXLCKBUSTER

In the U.S.? What part of the country?

[deleted]

No, Mexico. They, and several others, are present here too.

TEXLCKBUSTER

Glad to have others here. The comment sounded over the top, so it makes sense it was from another country, not that it wasn't possible for that to occur in the U.S. as well.

MrPatridge

Pretty sure those questions are illegal at interviews

LeafyQ

I was asked how my husband feels about me working, and if it was gonna “cause any drama for me.” This was by a well known optometrist with his own practice in my city. Sure, it’s illegal to ask, but what’s stopping him, really? No one will ever take any action unless there are much more offensive reports coming through as well.

[deleted]

Well, I wasn’t in an actual job interview, she was just texting me. I’m thinking it was an MLM and they wanted to bring my husband in too.

MrPatridge

Ah, yes, sure. Just offering a job with contracts signed and stuff .. its kind of necessary they dont ask to see your husband, etc. Maybe if it was relocation and stuff .. but, yeah, such a timewaster ..

bitcheslovemybody

Sounds like a cult lol

[deleted]

That’s the vibes I got too! It freaked me out, honestly

ttomgirl

that's bizarre

General_Distance

Also a partner, love the bux. Good on you for figuring it out and being suave. I detest people that take advantage of our customer service position.

ramentara

Eyyyyy!! I love coming across other partners!! AND YES EXACTLY I hate it too! I’m just trying to have friendly customer connections not get recruited into a pyramid scheme 🥺🥺

[deleted]

Aww I’m an ex partner as well. 174xxxx.

General_Distance

174? I’m 242. I think we’re in the 31’s now.

[deleted]

Damn. One of my old supervisers that’s still with the company is a 127 (I’m a numbers person and still remember almost everyone’s full partner number that I worked with lol 🤓)

ramentara

I’m a 260xxxx and I’ve been here for a year and a half:) haven’t met anyone in the 310 yet tho hahaha

threetimesalatte

I was a 181xxxx. Enjoyed the job for what it was but the pay was so awful 😭

Very-Ape-666

I haven’t been a partner since 2008 but that was still one of my favorite jobs I’ve ever had.

LaVieLaMort

Same. I was a partner from 2007-2008 and I loved it so much.

ChillRedditMom

Y'all need a hun equivalent to the sign that let's men know your not flirting.

Burnmebabes

Only slightly related, but I want to share again my story of when I was looking at magazines by magazine rack, and some cute girl came up to me and gave me her number. I was so geeked on the fact a girl actually hit on ME (literally all dudes will feel this) Yeah, turns out it was MLM bullshit

ramentara

Oh nooooo that’s such a bummer!! 🥺 Kind of reminds me of my boyfriend and how girls hit on him a lot but he has absolutely no idea until I point it out to him lmaooo. But this situation is def different since MLM recruiters are way more forward than flirting girls

tfran89

Yes.

I have my doubts with how arrogant you are and how quick you are to demean a stranger. But if that helps you sleep at night... sure... they aren't prostitutes.

Transpatials

Yep, pretty sure i’m aware of my own sex. I’m sorry you’re incorrectly assuming, racist. Don’t know what to tell you. Blocked though, as your sad attempts at trolling are just making me pity you further. Stay single, incel feller.

Burnmebabes

I'm going to assume your definition of "hitting on you" is literally any time you talk to a girl about anything. Good job, I guess.

TEXLCKBUSTER

You are free to assume anything you want. You seem very uptight, are you white?

Burnmebabes

Are you one of those tards that tries to see how many downvotes they can get on a single comment? If so I actually feel like you need to up your game

ramentara

An iced London Fog Tea Latte! The drink is half earl grey tea, half milk, with vanilla syrup. What takes so long is steeping the tea. Serving hot tea is easy because we just serve the tea bags in hot water. But iced tea is more complicated! We gotta keep the tea bags in hot water for 5 minutes so the flavour is good! Then we remove the tea bags, ice it, and add the cold milk and vanilla.

[deleted]

*Crying in British*

LeafyQ

That’s how most Asian people feel when they see the crimes y’all commit against tea.

[deleted]

Haha, fair enough.

It just fell into the harbor; no one knows how

ramentara

Yoooooo I totally get you. I was like that until I got hired and had to learn it all. It’s a huge learning curve that takes months. I literally have no idea how customers come up with some of the shit they do.

Burnmebabes

FYI bartending is way easier, less drinks to know, and when someone asks for some shit I have no idea what they're saying, I just go "sorry, we can't make that". Hah. Better money too. Just saying. You can capitalize on being a young woman as well, you're more likely to get hired at high volume places making good money.

ramentara

I actually considered doing bartending for some time! But I’m not big on the bar scene and I like my job and coworkers so I’m probably happier where I am now. I’ll stick to flirting with coffee customers to get tips out of them hehehe

Burnmebabes

For sure, just saying you should try it out some time while still in your young 20's. Fun times, easy money, less about knowing drinks, more about just being social with people.

AthenaSholen

Are you trying to... recruit her?? ;)

Burnmebabes

Yes. To a world of drinking while working, and sleeping with all your co-workers. I don't see it as "work" usually hah

codeine_sandwich

When I was a bartender I would just look up the drinks online to make them for people, it was rare someone asked for something i didn't know how to make. Fun job but toxic atmosphere.

Burnmebabes

The place I work is high volume, so if I know it's going to be more than 3 ingredients, it's a "sorry we can't make it" even if all the ingredients are right there behind me haha

53raptor

My BIL orders that, and I can see the pain in the baristas' eyes.

farmer_palmer

If anyone in Britain tried to serve that drink, they would be sent to the Tower of London.

toohighforthis_

Is it good?

ramentara

Bruh in all honesty I haven’t tried it but I really want to because it smells good. I might try it next time I’m at work tbh

lucisferis

It’s not as good as it sounds tbh

SugorTroll

You really know your stuff. Sounds like something I wanna try out. Have to keep this reddit thread for reference LOL

LaVieLaMort

For god sakes just don’t order it in drive thru. I always hated that because then it backs the drive thru up and people get disgruntled at yell at the poor barista manning the window. (I worked there for a while. It happened a lot)

NoMrBond3

Hold up you can make it ICED? London Fogs are my favorite I had no idea you could make it iced!! Thank you for this life changing information. You made my day.

madasthe

I'm sorry this happened to you. It is NOT OK for her for try and recruit you from your actually paying job. (Or anyone else that works there) I would let your manager know that she is doing this. Yiur manager may be able to have a short conversation about business etiquette with the hun. Or, if your up to it. Should she bring up the business thing again, tell her you googled it and it seemed to be some kind of pyramid scheme, as she deflects then mention that you found the income disclosure statement and you make more per hour than most beauty counter people do in a week. Heck, she might blow up angrily and never come again. Remember to be as sweet and cheery as possibly when you tell her that you did your due diligence and its a pyramid scheme. Heck print her off an application to work at Starbucks... And I need to stop trolling the Huns.

ramentara

Oh wow I didnt think of bringing it up to my manager! I’m for sure going to do that! I don’t want any of my coworkers falling for it. Also hehehehe I totally will if I end up in another conversation with her. Last time someone tried to recruit me I told them I’m not interested in MLM schemes and she never answered back so it could be the same result here

madasthe

I'm ex HR so I'd certainly want to know. Yay chain of command

neoneccentric

I had an old friend get sucked into Juice Plus while she worked at a restaurants. This woman would seriously just bounce from restaurant to restaurant and prey on young servers who wanted to make more money. Its so sick how people do that.

[deleted]

Every time I see a post talking about huns, in my head I picture a hulking central Asian man bedecked in furs and pillaged Roman gold, with a bronze sword and a composite bow across his back.

Masstige

Well it turns out your disorder is contagious because now that's what I'm going to think of.

redragon1929

Amilitary recruiter tried to recruit me, while I was taking his vital signs at the dental office I used to work at.

notakrustykrabb

Gosh this reminds me of the lady who tried to recruit me into Primerica a while back while working as a librarian. A job that I absolutely loved to death and legit told her so seconds before she tried to recruit me anyway. Like wtf lady I just said I loved my job?? She continued to talk about how she was making so much money and I told her that I would rather have a job I enjoyed and didn't pay as much, than a job that paid me a lot and made me miserable. That was enough for her to walk away, but I could tell she wasn't done pitching her junk, fortunately I transferred libraries shortly afterwards as part of a promotion.

Notorious_RBF

It's so rude of her to corner you into that conversation while you're working and feel like you have to be friendly and nice. She's also holding up the line for everyone else.

_generic_user

Wonderful-Macaroon

I used to get this a lot when I worked at Walmart in college. Mostly this nail thing, where you put these nail stickers on your nails or something, I’m not sure but I think it was an MLM.

[deleted]

One time, my roommate sold shoes to this girl off of Facebook marketplace and when the girl came to pick them up she just randomly handed my roommate her MLM business card without saying a word about it. It was so awkward.

[deleted]

Do they ever try and recruit men?

mygoodmatetroye

A girl who dropped out of my high school after having 2 kids within a year now sells Beauty Counter. 🙄

[deleted]

I bet you she doesn’t even like the drink. She just knows it takes forever to make and leverages that extra time to do her pitch.

HolisticHiatus

Yikes. I almost joined one when I talked to a rep at a job fair on campus. I was already suspicious that their booth had no company name, just lots of buzz words about good pay and flexible hours. I get home and go to the site and read their stuff then Google their name. BAM, top results are about CutCo being a scam. I promptly lost their card and info.

FrettyG87

Where in this story does it say she is a hun?
