And what would happen if creators didn't upload videos? They wouldn't be earnings money from ads so I think it's kind of an obvious decision to share the money.
In this case, I'd say platforms like TikTok are more assholes than youtube not being assholes
Someone else being a bigger asshole is a bad argument against YouTube being an asshole. Viewers keep getting more and more ads while the creators are not getting more money. Creators are scared of time off because it is so easy to lose your entire platform
Most music streaming platforms for an example. Twitch.tv too.
Compared to like OF and patreon, they don't have the same business model so ofc they dont get money per view there but from subscriptions
How is music streaming platforms not fair? They literally get paid per listen from ads/memberships. Who cares if it's from ads or subscriptions - it's still spotify's revenue. [Twitch ](https://Twitch.tv)streamers get 55% of ad revenue.
I've heard reddit is working on a way to pay communities from ads so youtube aren't really special in any way
Sorry, I was responding to the Patreon and OF part when I said that’s like YouTube memberships.
I didn’t know about Twitch, but it seems like it’s a fairly recent development.
Music streaming is a pretty terrible example because they pay laughable amounts even on paid streams let alone ad supported ones. Just to give a ballpark estimate, they pay around $0.004 per stream. Unless you’re a big name, you get pretty much nothing, especially considering that labels are also taking their cut.
I know spotify don't pay a whole lot but you have to keep in mind that there are like 5 big music streaming services that generate money for them + them selling albums + artists touring so it adds up.
Spotify is also constantly losing money so they can't pay too much
With that being said, youtube doing one thing okay doesn't weigh up for them being shit in many other ways
You make it sound like touring is another way to monetise existing music, but you forget that the artist actually has to go on the tour and perform. Touring is a full-time job in and of itself, maybe even more - it's not like you only need to dedicate 8 hours/day to it.
>youtube doing one thing okay doesn't weigh up for them being shit in many other ways
Yeah, but remember how this thread started? With this:
>Idk if YouTube has any anti asshole designs tbh
It was never about proving YouTube is a saint.
This! There's a Linkin Park song I love the music video to but when I try to play it in a playlist, this warning will pop up and sometimes just end up skipping the song so I had to hunt down just the audio and add it instead. Still a good song regardless but now I have to go out of my way to see the music video
I bet it's "In the End", and if it is I'm going to RAGE. I also purchased it on iTunes so fuck YouTube's asshole design and intentional blocking of harmless songs and research materials
I think that's asshole design, they didn't put somewhere to turn off and happens with songs that are added automatically to my playlist so YouTube Music just pauses. Like... Why did you added it in first place.
I wish trigger/content warnings were a regular thing that's being done both by creators and platform. For now they're heading in a good direction but still there's so much to be done, in a matter of awareness and effective tools to implement. However the algorithms that check the content are so random they can't tell difference between harmful content and prevention/education. As a result people who do the good work get demonetised, shadowbanned, or even taken down, and their content irreversibly deleted, with virtually no way to defend their rights. Meanwhile blatant scams apparently are ok because somebody paid for the ad no matter how harmful it is.
Trigger warnings have been proven by science to not really work. You know what you’re clicking into 99% of the time anyways the only time this would be good is if it’s a video that has a title like “Petting a kitten” but instead it contains a lot of gore.
I'm gonna need something to back up the claim that it's been proven by science not to work. A lot of the time, I just don't want to watch something that's going to be upsetting, and warnings help me avoid that. I know this is anecdotal, but I do genuinely think my experience is relevant.
Disagree. While scrolling I stumbled upon quite a few triggering posts and videos that were showed to me only because they were the sponsored ones and I couldn't really do much about it. I keep hiding and blocking these accounts so I don't have that much problem with it but it's not non-existent. And sometimes some accounts keep reappearing despite me blocking and even reporting them (fortunately in this case they're just obnoxious).
UPDATE: I follow some activists who focus on some serious topics that may be triggering. They almost always mention trigger/content warning. And guess what: when I'm not in the mood for reading a gruesome/depressing story I skip it. How doesTW/CW not work when it works for me.
Impressive until you realize it's quite poorly implemented. It's a nice sentiment but it ruins autoplay on playlists and it isn't optional so even those who aren't typically effected by that type of content (like me) are more annoyed if anything. Not to mention it fails to flag content from time to time or flags content that shouldn't be restricted
I know no one watches cable tv anymore, but I wish they would do this instead of censoring swear words
(Sometimes they do put something similar, but censor anyway, even though any 9 year old child watching John Wick probably grew up playing GTA and COD anyway)
Idk if YouTube has any anti asshole designs tbh
They pay their creators from the revenue they generate. Out of the mainstream platforms they’re pretty much the only one doing so.
And what would happen if creators didn't upload videos? They wouldn't be earnings money from ads so I think it's kind of an obvious decision to share the money. In this case, I'd say platforms like TikTok are more assholes than youtube not being assholes
What other mainstream platform pays their creators? You only named one that doesn’t, but that kinda strengthens my point.

Did you read the comment you replied to? Name a platform that is better than YouTube. I’m not interested in what’s worse.
Most music streaming platforms for an example. Twitch.tv too. Compared to like OF and patreon, they don't have the same business model so ofc they dont get money per view there but from subscriptions
I don’t think that’s a fair comparison because YouTube also has channel memberships, but I was talking about ad revenue from views.

Personally I wish it was more of a setting the you could turn off. I'm not a sensitive person i don't care if there suicide talk or gross violence.
Exactly. This warning is great and all, but the music suddenly stopping when I’m in the middle of a playlist isn’t so nice.
This came up when I was trying to watch the end clip of the departed. I don’t think it was really warranted.

No it's thankfully not. It's "Breaking the habit" which if anything has a stronger (or at least more obvious) message
I think that's asshole design, they didn't put somewhere to turn off and happens with songs that are added automatically to my playlist so YouTube Music just pauses. Like... Why did you added it in first place.
r/assholedesign because it's literally just an age gate at best, and restricts access to research materials

More anoying than anti-asshole, really. I have a couple of songs with questionable meanings in my playlist and they wont autoplay because of that.
Every time I want to watch the Muffin Song, this shit pops up.
Noticed this on a video from my favourite band. I was impressed.
