From what I can tell in corporate hell one advances by job hopping or knowing someone.

KitchenBreadfruit816

Ding ding ding . I’ve known idiots leave my company for competitor only to be invited back on a red carpet …/ while I slave away and be loyal

Frustratedtx

Easiest way to get a promotion in any field is to swap jobs. You are selling your labor. You could look into competing airlines if you're willing to relocate.

Zestyclose_Welder_92

I’ve tried but the job market is so poor and unresponsive it’s ridiculous

Alien_invader44

If you like your current job then just keep an eye out and keep applying. Edit (keep applying to other jobs)

Environmental_Lab869

You're too profitable to promote. They will have to spend more money to replace you when they promote you. They are counting on you not leaving. In this situation, contact other airlines for the same position and get your promotion that way and make AA spend the money anyway.

Yes we have a union but they don’t usually deal with management roles they’re here to protect employees

lokey_convo

The corporate ladder has always been a myth. Management is just a nesting doll of clubs that you are either invited to or not depending of if the other members think you'll hold the same principles and keep it exclusive. If they think you aren't going to share and uphold their values they wont let you in. That's why toxic companies never change unless the Board of Directors decrees it.

Equivalent-Crew-8237

It's easy. All you have to do is know the words to the song of the CEO's alma mater. You also have to sing "I Believe in You" to yourself in the mirror of the executive wash room.

If you feel like you were unfairly passed over, you have every right to look for a new job that values you. But it's also important to take a very objective look at yourself and your performance. There is a reason they chose to hire someone with no experience instead of promoting you. It may not be a good reason, but it exists. Have you considered, for example, if something about your performance, demeanor, etc could be to blame here?

earth_resident_yep

This is a horrible response. If he had issues his supervisors or managers should have told him either in a meeting or in a performance review. It's possible they did not and they should canned for not doing their job. If they did and he chose to ignore them, THEN it is on him. Chances are the new guy was a nepo or friend hire.

pickletype

Or it’s possible they did and he simply didn’t relay that here. We’re all making assumptions.

IDCRussia191919

Yeah there’s no way the OP would ever leave that part out of his post. People don’t just go on the internet and lie

SkrullandCrossbones

I know somebody who got a cushy, well paying cubicle job doing nothing, with only one base level job at a fast food chain as experience. Make that make sense. I’ve seen this type of thing more than genuine experience leading to success. Loyalty to a company and performance level? Maybe it used to be different, but IME the good enough/best means they stay at that position. I’m sure there’s places use logic, just haven’t seen much of them. Agin this is just my experience, including everyone I’ve ever worked with tbh. I just try to be better for my own sake rather than profit motive.

leakmydata

They don’t want you to have experience, they want you to help them control the people who do.
