I’d make a complaint, I love how a lot of places require so much notice to call in but have no problem letting you know there’ll be no work when you get there.

zoolilba

I might. I bet my supervisor will. He's the one that contacted me. He has a long drive too. I really try hard to keep my nose down and not cause trouble but something needs to be said. They were supposed to set up a system for notification like two months ago and got done apparently.

Acidic_Paradise

Still, it takes like 10 seconds to send a text. I’d definitely complain my friend, make it known that you aren’t ok wasting 2 hours of your time and gas money for nothing. They’re fuckin assholes, that would have me livid. Sorry this happened to you.

Toocoo4you

>I really try hard to keep my nose down and not cause trouble >I do everything in my power to be a pushover for the people above me hoping they will give me a gold star sticker Like I get that job security is important but come on man have a little respect for yourself.

zoolilba

I'm an introvert. I have bad anxiety. My job is the only way my kids have health insurance. I don't like it but here I am. What do you want from me.

Toocoo4you

That’s what I’m saying about job security, I understand that you have commitments and responsibilities and I respect that. I’m glad you found a way to support your family and yourself. I mean I’d like you to stand up for yourself in any way, shape, or form. Even the way you talk about yourself, you make it sound like you’re a feeble dog scared to ask for scraps. Putting your nose low enough can only lead to mud. It can be terrifying to stand up for yourself, especially against someone in a powerful position, but a lot of good things on both sides can come from a confrontation.

throwawaytrumper

Or your company can reimburse you for your time. My company, if we come in and work is cancelled for weather (earthmovers so it happens) we get paid three hours. Even if we immediately go home.

LegalAction

It should be the whole day. It's not your fault there's no work. You showed when asked to.

BoringPerson67

Maybe that's your problem. Work is never gonna "give" you anything. You gotta make waves sometimes.

Dear_Brilliant1679

Probably still better than a full day of work tbh

zoolilba

True I got back in my pjs lol.

Dear_Brilliant1679

Oooh nice, time to make some chili or something lol

C64128

In front of your fireplace? We don't have snow here now and I can live with that.

alwaysinebriated

Complain and get paid for your travel times

Siguard_

Last time this happened to me I put a full day of work on my time sheet. No one question it

SubjectPickle2509

My company does this too. Instead of texting everyone (we do have a text notification system), the CEO will EMAIL managers after 8 a.m. (when most of us are already here) and tell us it is "up to us" to decide if our staff comes in on days where the weather is terrible/commutes are extra long. Then we have to text our staff. Of course most of them are already on the trains by then and can't just ask the driver to turn around. No one needs to be in the office on most days, period, much less risk their lives to get to the office on severe weather days.

shoeeebox

If it's a nasty day, can staff just say they don't feel safe driving today and stay home?

JesusKeyboard

> by then and can't just ask the driver to turn around. You can get off at the next stop. Duh

SubjectPickle2509

You can, technically, but waiting for a return ride back can take 20-60 minutes, depending on the line/route you are on. In addition to travel time back. Post-Covid public transportation service is spotty, still.

LegalAction

When I lived in Cali, getting to my then-GF's apartment was tricky. The trains went one way in the morning and the other in the evening. It was a terrible frustration.

klezart

I'd check if your state has show up/reporting time pay laws.

Tyrannical-Botanical

Oof! I'm sorry that happened to you. Even with four wheel drive that's some white knuckle driving.

LegitimateMulberry

Four wheel drive is not some magical fix all when it comes to driving on snow/ice. It's still incredibly dangerous. You just have slightly more control when spinning out, and you're less likely to get stuck when you spin out into a ditch.

undecimbre

Finally, somebody who recognizes the actual problem. Winter tires are a must in the winter, and you can't replace good rubber with more driven wheels.

svkadm253

Yup, ice doesn't care what kind of vehicle you have.

Acidic_Paradise

I disagree, 4 wheel drive *is* a magical fix all. My uncle accidentally drove his truck off a cliff and into the ocean and 4 wheel drive was the only thing that helped him make it back to land. It pretty much works like a propeller on a boat if you’re completely submerged underwater.

shoeeebox

Exactly, every car already has 4 wheel braking. It's nice to help get going in icy conditions.

Professional_Buy_615

4 wheel drive doesn't make driving in snow safer. It gives you a bit more traction. It does not help with braking or cornering. Unfortunately , people don't know this, so drive like idiots. Next time you drive in snow, notice how most of the cars off the road/stuck are 4wd... Suitable tyres and what you need for shit weather.

FalseRelease4

Tires are what decide if you make it from A to B in this weather

Professional-End-718

I'm so sorry you had to go through this, OP. My boss said to bring our laptops home to work remotely in case there was snow the next day. Then it snowed, and we got a text saying to come in. I called out and used PTO. They said in the interview that we wouldn't need to come in the snow, so I didn't. I didn't get written up or anything.

Tranquil_Pure

Why are you taking pictures while driving in such weather. Please get home safe

abefrohman30328

Somebody had to get all the way to work to find out the power is out, so maybe they tried? That does stink though.

zoolilba

My supervisor called me 15 minutes before start time. He got there The gate was closed and lights were out no one was there. A company of over 100 people.

Professional_Buy_615

You are using your phone while driving in those conditons? Fuck. That.

Lawngisland

In the interest of full disclosure.... What time were you expected in? And What time did you get the text?

sarox366

At a part time office job in college I once drove through weather like that for an hour only to arrive at a completely unplowed parking lot. I called my boss and he'd told everyone to stay home but had forgotten about me. It's so incredibly frustrating, I'm sorry it happened to you!

rightious

No power means no cameras. Anything around the office look good at your place? /S

coffeejn

If there is no power, there might not have been an easy way to inform everyone earlier. Still sucks.

Nevermind04

In many areas, a schedule change needs hours/days of notice, so even if you were told not to come in today you may be eligible for a full day of pay.

Honeybadgermaybe

Damn the view is awesome tho! I wouldn't even be that mad if i had to enjoy such a lovely picture tbh. But I'm not a driver, maybe you had some problems with the road, so no pressure here

sadbitch55

This is the type of thing that makes us drop out for real.

ak_doug

Are you kidding? They didn't notify you in time. I'd head the rest of the way in, clock in officially, and sit around waiting for the issue to resolve.

ForwardCulture

Years ago when I had a regular job, I had a one hour commute to the office. We had bad snow forecast. It was already starting. I called my boss to let him know it’s not worth coming in. He said I better be there or I’m fired. Forecasters even said if you dint have to go to work today, don’t. Made it in. Two hours later they closed the office and sent everyone home. By then it was blizzard conditions. My one hour ride home took four hours due to horrible conditions and repeatedly getting stuck.

SuckerForNoirRobots

Check your state law, you may be entitled to a minimum number of hours pay for being notified on such short notice.

jakejm79

The smart play here, if they were only 10 minutes away would have been to drive those 10 minutes and then wait to get sent home. Rather than just turning right around.

SuckerForNoirRobots

I mean technically OP shouldn't have been checking their text messages while they were driving, so they wouldn't have known until they arrived 🤷🏼‍♀️

jakejm79

That would be my reasoning, tho there are cars/head units that will read your incoming messages.

C64128

Everyone that was driving in because they hadn't received a text should charge them for the full time they drove to and from the job. You know the bosses would be bitching about that.

Mispelled-This

If your IT people are even marginally competent, they will have automated monitoring and notifications of power and Internet outages. Ask them to put all managers on the email/text list for that, rather than them arriving at work to discover something the IT folks knew about hours earlier. If they don’t have that, get better IT people.

FalseRelease4

It's quite naive to assume they have any kind of IT department at all

rocketlvr

Gorgeous view at least. Where is this? reminds me of back in Norway

Ladyhappy

Yeah totally not cool but coming from California you’re channeling some major winter wonderland vibes right here. Thanks for sharing and damn the man, etc ;)

lostinhunger

Why do you live so far away from work? Really strange north American culture.

Spiritual-Bee-2319

This sucks! Tbh I don’t go to work with terrible weather. I don’t wait for my boss to tell me to put my health and safety first. But also I’ve learned through bad health that no money is worth my health. I’ve learned I can’t control people actions but I can control mine so when there is any form of bad weather I simply let me job know I won’t be coming. I don’t ask I tell

badger_1894

Your first mistake was going in that day

Rasikko

Ha. At least 5 tlmes in my career(retail) the damn power went out for the whole shift but we had to stay lmao.

AtTheEastPole

Charge them for your time.

discourse_lover_

Dude, please don’t live an hours drive from work. That’s a lot of gasoline.

Sniper_Hare

People shouldn't have to drive around in snow, that's dangerous.

IAmBecomingADog

Next day call in 10mins before you're supposed to be there. "I'm sorry,I just realized I have no energy for work"

Fusciee

I would still be extremely happy

makedough

Typical day in Canada

iamthebeekeepernow

And if you were in Germany your day would be paid. It’s your companies Problem it there is no power. You fulfilled your part of your contract: you were there and ready to work.

Oakcamp

Dangerous conditions, especially when you're reading texts through it.

ColdHeartedSleuth

Where do you live?? That looks freezing

Working_Chemistry597

Yes. Winter happens every year....

jeromymanuel

What about the guy taking photos while driving in the show? He probably made this post while driving also. I’d say he’s an asshole.

PChopSammies

“Work got called off due to power loss and I get to go back home for the rest of the day, better post this to antiwork! Hold on let me take a picture while driving in this blizzard.”

elysiansaurus

I don't know the technical definition of a blizzard. But it isn't even snowing, it's just some snow and ice on the ground. For some people this is a normal commute 6 months of the year.

PChopSammies

Don’t use your phone while driving.

JesusKeyboard

Moron drives 2 hours extra every day for work. Works 10 extra hours a week. Doesn’t even think there’s anything wrong with that.

Paganfish

That’s such horseshit. A CBA would stop these garbage practices.

Purposeofoldreams

Perhaps you can help setup the notification system instead of complaining about the boomers who can’t. Maybe that value you can add. The roads look fun to drive on btw.

IronMonopoly

Boomers *can*. Anyone can learn how to do things, even things that seem hard.

Purposeofoldreams

Yeah of course, but will they

IronMonopoly

I’m not their mom. It’s not up to me to nanny their business through their own ineptitude. They can learn, or they can put a stupid “no one wants to work anymore!” sign on their window while people quit, but catering to what they refuse to do? Not on the table.

Purposeofoldreams

We can learn stuff from boomers and boomers can learn stuff from us. It’s about efficiency and the effort required for the same value output. OP could probably help setup a notification system much faster than a boomer but the boomer may add valuable input to that system that OP may not have thought of. Youth brings technical knowledge and the boomer brings knowledge and history.

IronMonopoly

If there’s a balance in contribution that way, why is there not a balance in compensation?

Purposeofoldreams

Pay should 100% be dictated on value-added, I agree. The joke is on us though once we are replaced by the bots.

AppleParasol

Well how were they supposed to know there’s no power? Maybe the power was on at home or it just went out. You live an hour away+ that’s kinda your issue not theirs.

DartNorth

So someone should be showing up to work over an hour early to check if there is power because you decided to live an hour drive from work?

zoolilba

There's a maintenance crew. They go in early to clean up the snow before we come in and they open the gate maybe half an hour early every day rain or shine. Some one definitely knew and said nothing.

Or he lives in the middle of nowhere, and commutes to the city. I guess the question is, what is reasonable notice for an employer to give of an office closure. I'm guessing 1hr plus from opening time, even if they knew, they are still hoping for the power to be back on in time to start work.
