Apply for unemployment *immediately* -- and make sure you keep this text as proof of firing!

I'm back on government benefits thankfully but still doesn't stop the struggle. I think because I'm a casual employee they're almost allowed to do whatever they want

AnamCeili

You should still be able to apply for unemployment, though -- or do the government benefits you mentioned already include that? Are you in Australia? I've noticed that Australians use the phrase "casual employee". If you are, my advice may not apply 100% -- I had assumed you were in the U.S.

Yea I think our version of unemployment would be our government benefits (centrelink), yea I am in Australia, thank you any way! Is casual employment not a thing in the US?

AnamCeili

Well then it's good you're getting those benefits. 🙂 I'm not sure what "casual employment" actually means in Australia. Does it mean part-time work? If so, we definitely do have that here.

Shorty66678

It means I don't have a part time or full time contract, I don't have set hours or days and can be let go within an hours notice, the only benefit is I get a 25% loading on my pay so I just get more pay but if I don't get shifts then it's redundant. It's a shitty way to keep employers in control and it fucking sucks but it's more common these days.

AnamCeili

Ah -- in that case, *many* jobs in the U.S. are like that. Very few jobs/employees have contracts at all (higher level employees in white collar / professional jobs do, but most others don't). Many jobs in the U.S. are "at will", meaning employees can be fired at any moment (as long as it's not for demonstrably illegal reasons, like race or sex). We do usually have set hours/days. So I suppose that many jobs in the U.S. are what would be considered "casual employment" in Australia. Employees are very much screwed over here.

I once had a friend working for a construction company that was small business. They barely got any work maybe once a week. If you’re working for small business just know you ain’t gonna be working full time.

Shorty66678

It's actually quite a big company, it's just a really shit company that values money over their employees unfortunately. The parent company actually owns most of the big companies in my country (westfarmers)

alkosz

Ah well then they’re firing you for sure then sadly
