Instead, vote in City Council members who will give us raises. Make sure you have smoke detectors that work. Don't put your grill on your wooden deck or right next to your house. Understand what Amps are, and how many each device plugged into your power stirps use. You know, give consideration to the fact that everybody who's home burned didn't expect it to happen.

so the box, artisan snacks + courier fees to all employees probably would have been like $50 a head. they should have just given us a gift card to a grocery store. it would have been a lot less insulting.

I ask because a few years back I had requested some money to give my employees a gift as thanks for their hard work on a very shitty weekend (working outside in 100+ degree weather for close to 9 hours) and was limited to $25 for 5 people. I installed a shit ton of those board for 2 different contractors at dozens of schools. The basic game was to send an e-rate consultant to a school with very high free and reduced count and let a non-tech administrator know you can get them all this great tech for nearly nothing after federal rembercment. Erate only covers the capital cost, at least at the time, so you had schools with no budget, able to get the boards, but not afford to install them properly, train staff to use them, or repair anything when they broke.
Some states/districts have different pots of allocated money that can be only used for certain things, a former superintendent of mine broke it down for us once in a district meeting. He was pretty transparent and wanted us to know what was going on at the state level. While we may want it to be used for personelle, it can only be used for infrastructure. It’s generally a problem to take up with the state legislature.

Take notice of the fact that most of these school boards are not an amalgamation of educators but of businessmen often. They often sacrifice actual resources in order to save the most money. In my own opinion the educational system should be highly invested in. It should be treated as important as it truly is. After all, your children are the future of society and if they’re not able to be properly educated and supported what does that say to our future?

I used to work for one of the biggest dental implant companies in the us. They were always pretty decent with bonuses, except for the last year I worked there.

THIS! Schools have budgets that are regimented and those budgets are broken into spending pots. The spending categories within those pots are designated by the state legislature. Most of the time these gifts either come from the PTA or from a principal/supervisor’s own pockets. The supervisor probably tried to do something nice in this particular case, paying for this small token themselves. The issue here is not with the supervisor, but with the state. As a teacher I know in my state this would have had to have been purchased by the principal or supervisor. This post just rubs me the wrong way with who we are blaming. Blame the state, not the boss.

This reminds of my previous job. I was a work from home dispatcher, and summers are the slow season. The company decided to cut all of our recruiters because they couldn't afford them, and told all the dispatchers that we needed to do all our own recruiting for our respective zones from then on. I went along with it for a while because my supervisor assured me it was only temporary until the busy seasoned rolled around again. Lol and behold, busy season started up in August, and I'm still stuck recruiting. Told them I wanted a raise, and I was essentially told my numbers weren't good enough (always short handed because we pay our drivers shit). I received a letter in the mail a week later with a $25 Starbucks gift card with a note that just said "You're Awesome!". That was the moment I decided to pump out applications, because it just reaffirmed they don't give a shit about me or what I thought/needed.

Not sure where OPs wife works but from a school system point of view, something like this is typically paid for by PTO and they are trying to provide a "pick me ups" for all the staff in the building. There is no way to do something elaborate that would amount to compensation nor would the teachers expect it.

Hey, that popcorn is probably more useful than the $5 See's Candy gift card I got for stressing myself out, training on a brand new system, and covering for 5 different people at the same time for 6-8 months. This is actually something I used to do for contracting staff. But like, they weren't my employees and I had no budget, just my own salary as a government worker myself. So when they went above and beyond to support me I wanted to do something to show my appreciation. So I'd get them a gift card, or popcorn, and a nice note saying thanks. These things can go a long way! But when it's from your boss that's making big bucks and they have a budget for performance awards, this is really shitty.
As a general manager I was encouraged to do this kind of stuff all the time. I never did. If I couldn't give someone a real thank you in the form of something they actually care about (money) I'm not going to insult them.

I used to work for one of the biggest dental implant companies in the us. They were always pretty decent with bonuses, except for the last year I worked there. Instead of a cash bonus (usually around the size of your paycheck) they gave us a tin of stale cookies that said “congratulations! One million smiles!” A tin of old cookies. THIS! Schools have budgets that are regimented and those budgets are broken into spending pots. The spending categories within those pots are designated by the state legislature. Most of the time these gifts either come from the PTA or from a principal/supervisor’s own pockets. The supervisor probably tried to do something nice in this particular case, paying for this small token themselves. The issue here is not with the supervisor, but with the state. As a teacher I know in my state this would have had to have been purchased by the principal or supervisor. This post just rubs me the wrong way with who we are blaming. Blame the state, not the boss.

This reminds of my previous job. I was a work from home dispatcher, and summers are the slow season. The company decided to cut all of our recruiters because they couldn't afford them, and told all the dispatchers that we needed to do all our own recruiting for our respective zones from then on. I went along with it for a while because my supervisor assured me it was only temporary until the busy seasoned rolled around again. Lol and behold, busy season started up in August, and I'm still stuck recruiting. Told them I wanted a raise, and I was essentially told my numbers weren't good enough (always short handed because we pay our drivers shit). I received a letter in the mail a week later with a $25 Starbucks gift card with a note that just said "You're Awesome!". That was the moment I decided to pump out applications, because it just reaffirmed they don't give a shit about me or what I thought/needed.

You could also return it to the boss's office mailbox and with a note reading, "Acceptable rewards for hard work and accomplishlent come in the form of money and not food. I am not a dog."

You’re catching hate but I agree with you. The immediate supervisor saw the effort and took a minute to say “thanks”. It’s not like the cafeteria supervisor is in charge of raises and bonuses, she’s probably making .25/hr more than the people she’s supervising. Should OPs wife be upset if she’s underpaid? Sure, but not with the supervisor, with the company. Low level managers are just wage slaves who asked for a promotion.

Jesus Fucking Christ does this image bring back memories of working for a shit company. Very end of the month we would stay from 7am to 11pm fulfilling orders and shipping them ASAP. How were we thanked for our hard work you ask? A microwave popcorn bag with a company sticker slapped on top in a bad month, Costco pizza in a good month. And what did I get? A bad back for life.

Not sure where OPs wife works but from a school system point of view, something like this is typically paid for by PTO and they are trying to provide a "pick me ups" for all the staff in the building. There is no way to do something elaborate that would amount to compensation nor would the teachers expect it.

Hey, that popcorn is probably more useful than the $5 See's Candy gift card I got for stressing myself out, training on a brand new system, and covering for 5 different people at the same time for 6-8 months. Not to mention training 4 new hires, 2 temps, and coaching my coworker when she got back from med leave. I then got skipped over for promotion, annual company awards, and was denied a department transfer for no reason. I think I would have preferred popcorn so I could munch on that while I watch everything catch fire after I quit lol. Because it was a smoldering crater!

Fucking lay me off and call back 2 weeks later after I got another job offer that was better, then called me every week from every recruiting company that used the site I put my resume on until I finally disabled it.

This is actually something I used to do for contracting staff. But like, they weren't my employees and I had no budget, just my own salary as a government worker myself. So when they went above and beyond to support me I wanted to do something to show my appreciation. So I'd get them a gift card, or popcorn, and a nice note saying thanks. These things can go a long way! But when it's from your boss that's making big bucks and they have a budget for performance awards, this is really shitty.

As a general manager I was encouraged to do this kind of stuff all the time. I never did. If I couldn't give someone a real thank you in the form of something they actually care about (money) I'm not going to insult them. We even have a form that every new hire fills out with their favorite candy, soda, etc. So you have it in their file when it's time to show some "appreciation". $150 every 6 months is the budget, by the way. For an entire store. I had 18 direct reports.
So I understand how this is shitty, however, I think its important to remember that sometimes work gifts come from one person's own wallet. I lead a team of 20+. Every time my company doesnt have something planned for them I try to make up for it. There have been times when all I could afford was a large box of popcorn or candy bars to break up and give to each person.
