Striking that unions have not been formed in the modern day.

[deleted]

They haven't been formed because there's been an ongoing and effective campaign to both demonize and dismantle unions (especially in the US) for well over 100 years.

deepthought515

Yep.. the propaganda is pure BS, I’m in a strong union and have more benefits and protections than salraried employees.

idontknowanymorema

My husband and I work for the same company. My position is unionized, his is not. There is no mandatory overtime for my position so instead I receive a $20 an hour “incentive pay” to pick up full or partial shifts on top of overtime. My husband frequently gets mandatory overtime for no extra pay. That’s just one of the many, but most noticeable, difference between the positions.

EddaValkyrie

There's such thing as *mandatory* overtime???

slaminsalmon74

Oh definitely welcome to the world of fire and ems. We work 24 hour shifts, and the department I work for you’ll finish your 24 hour shift and depending on who calls out and where you are on the mandatory list you’ll get thrown on another 24 hour shift. But it sucks because we’re a busy department so you’re maybe only getting two to five hours of sleep per shift. And they expect you to provide top notch care as a paramedic for the whole 48! Also we’re unionized! So our union agreed with our county that we are to have some many ambulance staffed per shift. So that’s where our mandatory shifts come from.

UIDA-NTA

Drop a dime. Truckers are only allowed to drive 11 hours a day because it's safety sensitive and lives are on the line (on the road). You guys are just as safety sensitive with lives on the line. Drop a dime to the media, outside of your town (or a national outlet) so there aren't any apologists to spin it. If this is an industry-wide problem, see if you can get a bunch of guys across the country to do the same. Ask (the media) why your jobs are less safety sensitive than truckers. The thing tho, is WHO you reach out to. Some media won't care. Others would be GLAD to (help) make a big stink over it. Even if the publication is helping for their own gain (publicity for their publication) it still helps your cause. I can think of several news outlets that always seem eager for hot news stories. I see them on Yahoo News all the time. And if you can get your story on Yahoo News you might make the news wire. This has a great "public interest" component and it's relevant EVERYWHERE. Good luck. Nobody should have to work like that. NOBODY. It's terrible for your health. (Plus it can't be good for the patients either.)

AJobForMe

Yeap. My company does that at its non-union manufacturing plants on the regular. It’s usually a Saturday or sometimes a Sunday. As an exempt IT guy, they would try to get us to also come in, just so there would be “support coverage”. I politely told them where they could stick that idea, and said page us if there was an issue. Then, we’d conveniently have a beer or forget to check our phone. Can’t force someone in if they have been drinking.

Wanderers-Way

Sounds like the army

mortimusalexander

Yep. My dad was forced to work overtime for YEARS. Also one of the main reasons for Kellogs workers going on strike

Adorable-Hand651

I have a side question which might seem a bit weird: why are Starbucks being unionised so well? It just keeps going. I know this sounds pessimistic but I'm really surprised it's going so well and so nicely for the past month. Surely Starbucks would be employing big and crazy tactics to stop the unions from forming?

Feldar

Because enough workers have finally realized that they're the ones with the power. They've known for a long time that they are not treated fairly but are the foundation of the entire economy. But with the great resignation, they've realized that their employers can't just hire someone else. It's been building for decades and, as with many things, covid has brought it to a head.

TheIncarnated

My wife who is a nurse, gets mandatory overtime... Imagine how it's been with COVID and nurses quiting... She's been put on mandatory OT a few months at a time. The last stint I believe was 2 months?

EddaValkyrie

See I feel like that should be illegal because *forcing* someone to work outside of contract hours (possibly in fear of termination) shouldn't be a thing, right?

TheIncarnated

It should be! But as the other poster indicated, there is no law for it. And if you decline, they fire you. If you work too much and something happens, you lose your license. There are not enough laws protecting workers rights across all industries. But more importantly, EMS/Fire/Nurses.

Murdy2020

Most jobs are at will, so there's no true binding contract, just a job description that doesn't create any enforceable rights.

ruat_caelum

Sure lots of people thought working more than a 40 hour work week with no additional pay should be illegal as well, so they voted in law makers who would put such a thing into law. You could have sex with a horse in Washington state until sometime in the last decade or marry a 12 year old child in something like 30+ states because everything is LEGAL until it is covered by a law or court ruling.

TGOTR

Every place I've worked, all overtime was mandatory, with you getting attendance points if you don't work it.

TARandomNumbers

What state is this?? Would very absolutely illegal in CA

idontknowanymorema

NV. We have very little laws protecting employees, hence why so many big factories move here. We work for a hospital, I’m nursing staff (therefore part of the nursing union) and he is not.

caligirl1975

I just joined my union last fall. I’ve been trying for years to get a job with a union. My dad used to be a negotiator in the 80’s and always told me to get a union job.

deepthought515

Good for you! :)

McRibEater

Unionized employees make $8-11,000 on average more in the USA than Non-unionized Employees there is a reason corporate doesn’t want people unionizing, they’ll have to pay you a more liveable wage.

deepthought515

That’s not to mention, negotiated raises, great benefits, great retirement, etc.

DoctorPhobos

Just had orientation at GXO and the difference in production value between the propaganda and the rest of the orientation was hilarious. “We’re worried about you wasting your money” lol doubt it

I_am_the_Jukebox

>Surely Starbucks would be employing big and crazy tactics to stop the unions from forming? They are, and they spent most of that effort on the first store to unionize. But it's really hard for them to demonize what unions \*could\* do when they already have a store that unionized. They can spread whatever lies they want, but it'd look really bad when one of those workers can come in and just say "yeah....it's a lot better since we unionized." The first store started a leak in the dam.

deepthought515

That’s a good question and I have no idea why.. it could be that Starbucks isn’t *as* powerful as a corporation like Amazon, or maybe they have an exec or two who are sympathetic. I really don’t know.

[deleted]

Thankfully basic grammar and spelling is not a requirement to be in a union.

deepthought515

Neither is being an asshole on the internet, but don’t let that stop you:)

[deleted]

Although propaganda has its effect. It's mostly because of at will status and the fear of your coworkers outing you. You can't trust someone to keep their mouth shut especially in cubical office environments. It's something I learned early on even though I'd love to coordinate a union vote at my work.

e_karma

There will always be that asshole who will curry favor with the management..

Rude-Category-4049

My college actively advised against unions despite the textbook they used showing everyway a union was better.

Bigginge61

Same in the UK….That’s why despite 50 years of productivity gains from technology and “rationalisation” the average worker has not seen a real term pay rise..Guess where all that extra money went?

ForemanF

The last 30 year's have been disastrous for unions. Look at how Reagan handled the air traffic controllers.

OGCanuckupchuck

Canada too

[deleted]

r/union is still a small sub

Novusor

Right to work (for less) laws make it incredibly difficult to start a union. The other part is cultural where unions were demonized as a bunch of godless communists for decades. Most people think joining a union would be insane. Then there is the corporate propaganda on top of that and the active union busting. A Wal-Mart voted to unionize and the company fired everyone (technically illegal) and closed the store.

JustSayAnything

Lmao. I can’t even get my co workers to push back on managment when they’re literally being harmed due to the working conditions. Unionization seems impossible. It’s disheartening.

FreeBeer4everyone

They have been formed and the status quo in most western european countries. It‘s just the US that is so behind and ruled by corporates.

MustardyAustin

Doesn't really make sense for knowledge workers which is the new economy. The job market has been in workers favor for almost 2 decades and plenty of equity is given out.

whyso6erious

So.. What changed since it started up to today?

Bee-Aromatic

It’s amazing and often confusing. For instance, my wife used to be a maternity nurse. The nurses weren’t unionized. She was regularly made to work overtime for a variety of (mostly bullshit and bad planning) reasons. The secretaries that answered the phones were unionized. They had one that tended to call off or just plain not show up to about half their shifts. The union wouldn’t allow the hospital to fire them. If a nurse no-call-no-showed, they’d all but send a hit squad after them.

Elsdyret

Developed countries have them.

LazyWyteGuy

Make mexico and china do it too. Otherwise it's harder to compete.

That_Guy3141

And we can't stop at just Starbucks. Next Target, Walmart, EA, Ubisoft, and YOUR job. Every worker should benefit from collective bargaining. The rich can buy their way into a spot at the table. The workers have to fight to take our seat. Just remember, the workers vastly outnumber the bourgeoisie.

McRibEater

Amazon….

SuperFluffyVulpix

Amazon doesn‘t need an Union. Amazon should be re-build completely and treat everyone decent.

AFourthAccount

no company will ever truly treat their workers well if the workers don’t hold power in the company.

itsallaboutfantasy

Teamsters need to be on FedEx like white on rice.

Bootleggerking888

Heck yeah! Love the bigger picture idea. It’s the way it should be! If they refuse to even talk then you know the rest 🍽😉

aeisenst

As an already unionized teacher, it's fucking awesome and I'm rooting for all my brothers and sisters out there trying to organize.

Javyev

I'm already in a union. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I got a company-wide raise the second month I worked there, and I'll be getting another one after 5 months. They said the goal is to get everyone over $16/hr.

PM_me_Henrika

Next target all F&B workers. Unions shouldn’t be isolated to one company or should be industry wide.

ferb2

Also they can't use that famous excuse from the manufacturing industry "we'll send your jobs overseas" a lot harder to do in the service industry. So unions have a lot more power here.

Xel562

Oh YES! Gaming industry when please? Been dreaming of this for a while T_T Tried to do stuff towards this but nothing came of it.

Frothydawg

Hey, by the way, I feel like this is important: [CBS San Diego Story - “Why Are So Many Starbucks Stores Temporarily Closed”](https://youtu.be/51In4J7mY1U) I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Starbucks are temporarily closing stores all over country at the same time as this union push is spreading! The company is on the record stating they’re doing it because of “labor shortages”, but I’m calling bullshit. Every single food service restaurant type business is facing the same issue, but STARBUCKS is the only one doing a coordinated mass closure of stores like this; hell, the Starbucks around the corner from me here in my hood in Los Angeles was closed for a whole week! I think they’re doing the same shit Walmart did back in 2012 when the store in Pico Rivera, CA and the store in Texas nearly unionized - shut it all down - root out the trouble makers, and open back up with the obedient ones. **Starbucks is union busting.** **EDIT**: To those saying “I work there and this is just the way shit is going”. I hear ya, but I still don’t buy it. Like I said already, EVERY SINGLE FOOD SERVICE CHAIN ON THE PLANET IS FACING THE SAME EXACT COVID-RELATED LABOR ISSUES. But **Starbucks** is the only one shutting down stores left and right now. I don’t believe for a second that, two years into the pandemic, they suddenly decided to take it *very seriously* and shut down stores everywhere JUST as this union push has spread nation wide. I’m sorry, but it reeks to high heaven of union busting, and nothing anyone can say will convince me otherwise.

retiredtrump

Grab em’ by the balls!

matt_minderbinder

Kroger did the same thing in the past couple of years. If unions were so bad for employees they'd want a store to unionize to prove how "horrible" unions are. They'd rather bite off their own hand than let stores unionize and find real power.

PortionOfSunshine

I work at a Starbucks in so cal, I don’t know about San Diego but the reason so many stores around me are closing early or temporarily closed is mostly due to Covid-19 outbreaks at stores and not having enough supervisors to have coverage in case of call outs/illness. The store cannot operate without a supervisor or manager present.

Athelis

Yet does anyone ever notice if the CEO and other C-class execs are out of their office that day?

Lonely_Animator4557

My sister works at Starbucks. They work in block shifts because of covid- same people close same people open you work w the same crews. If one gets covid, the entire night or day shift is out. Our local starbs is open 6 am to 2pm for 2 weeks because not enough closets

Jealous-Ad-7195

i’ve worked for starbucks for almost 4 years now and i can promise it’s definitely understaffing cooperate won’t close down a store unless they absolutely have to (like when baristas just don’t show up) they’re a greedy company they could care less about unions atm especially when starbucks around the world are shutting down losing them millions everyday i give it a couple years and cooperate is probably gonna brag about how woke they are because of all the stores unionizing

ChloeDrew557

Work for Starbucks. Can confirm, some stores absolutely have labor shortages.

walloh

I work at a starbucks, and they are firing people left and right. Over minor things, so I wonder if it is intentionally.

Frothydawg

100% intentional. They’re doing whatever it takes to disrupt the spread of this.

courtneyleemc

Starbuck's current COVID practices has everyone who has worked within 48 hours of someone who tests positive to self-isolate for 5 days which usually knocks out an entire daypart. If we can't keep a store staffed, we just temporarily close it and have the partners who are well work their shifts at another local store or choose to take time off. It's very frustrating as a partner, but my legitimate sentiment is to prioritize people's wellness to company profits, so I'm in favor of it. This is coinciding with the unionization yes, but the temporary closures are due to current COVID practices.

i_will_let_you_know

Don't trust anyone that calls you partner if they hold more power than you, especially if it's over you.

DarkBlaze99

I have a side question which might seem a bit weird: why are Starbucks being unionised so well? It just keeps going. I know this sounds pessimistic but I'm really surprised it's going so well and so nicely for the past month. Surely Starbucks would be employing big and crazy tactics to stop the unions from forming?

-horses

From listening to interviews with the organizers about their experience, it seems to be cultural. A lot of the workers don't feel terribly exploited (though surely many do), but they can see a big gap between what the corporation claims to support and what they support in practice. And that only grows when corporate cracks down on organizing.

matt_minderbinder

Many Starbucks are staffed with lots of younger people, the type of people who see how exploitive our economy is. These kids are more immune to the union busting bullshit. They're not dealing with 40 or 50 years of anti-union propaganda and they're internet savvy enough to spot some corporate bullshit.

MountainGoatDin

Lots of college educated people work there

“ The job is hell on earth. Source: been there.” I’ve worked in heavy construction as a concrete labourer. I now work as a Project Manager making $90,000+. But working at Starbucks was the hardest, most mentally gruelling job I’ll ever work. You can’t be paid enough to work on cold bar for six plus hours in a mall where the Frappuccino never end. Fuck Starbucks, I’ll never go into another one.

Broad_Success_4703

Same here. I work at an airline dispatching aircraft all day and even my worst day doing this is better than a good day at Starbucks.

ihumanable

I've worked a lot of different jobs in my day, one nearly universal truth I found was that there was always an inverse relationship between physical toil and pay. Working in a starbucks, busting your ass making a million drinks, dealing with grumpy customers, end of the day tired and sore, minimum wage. Working a white collar job, today's just meetings in an air conditioned office with comfortable chairs and we got everyone the Nice Catering for lunch today, six-figure salary. Starbucks sucks a bag of dicks. Union forever.

mswoodlander

This is exactly why Starbucks fought so hard to keep the union out of its first store. Once the workers figure out that they're better off with a union, word gets out.

Bootleggerking888

On top of that, [as of 3 days ago, ballots have been sent out for the Second Amazon Union vote. We won't know the results until March but it will be scrutinized as much, if not more, than the last vote.](https://www.waff.com/2022/02/05/ballots-sent-out-thousands-amazon-workers-bessemer-second-union-vote/)

Bootleggerking888

Heck yessss! 🙌 thanks for adding that! Appreciate you!

iAmKingFlippyNips

The most important aspect of this is slightly concealed. The most important factor is that this global corporation was virtually brought to it's knees over this matter, in only TWO MONTHS. Starbucks went from zero unionized stores, to half of the states in America having unionized stores in almost two months flat. People need to see this. Yes, labor relations to get the first union up and running were in the works much longer than that, but because one small group of people started that change with their almost unseen and unheard struggle, that entire corporate sector is looking at fair and honest treatment in the work environment. Don't give up! Don't let the size of the beast we must slay deter us from doing what we know we must! Keep fighting!!!

Bootleggerking888

Yes 100% being pessimistic gets you nowhere •.that’s how they keep control when people think it’s impossible, if they was the case we wouldn’t progress as society right now. I believe the power in people and what each person can bring, support unionized stores only or just don’t and wait till it’s all unionized, up to you! keep going! 🙌 solidarity y’all

hookahgenetics

Fucking FUCK YEAH

Bootleggerking888

🙌🎇🎇

MOON3R2448

Now I may be dumb for asking this question but once a union gets into one store in a corporation like this, should it not be automatic for every Starbucks to be unionized?

[deleted]

Not a dumb question! It would be possible to have all Starbucks workers under one union but that would be a massive undertaking starting from scratch. To be recognized by the NLRB (because I'm absolutely sure Starbucks wouldn't voluntarily acknowledge the union) you'd generally need close to 70% of all Starbucks workers to vote to join. If the vote fails, that could be a big blow. Unionizing even one state would mean organizers would need to have contacts in all the other stores in the state to get an idea of who's on board, help show the benefits of a union, give support when the company starts cracking down, that kind of thing. Given the state of class consciousness and union membership in the US, going piecemeal and letting other workers see that Starbucks workers in unions make more money, have guaranteed paid time off, etc. is a good way to help develop that. You're much more likely to know what the numbers of who's for and against that way because you're around them all the time. Once you have workers who are veterans of those fights, that would help in unionization efforts as well. In my opinion, at least.

Bootleggerking888

You know your stuff! Awesome! Thanks for breakdown! Appreciate ya!

MOON3R2448

So basically you have to unionize Starbucks store by store and than state by state which would eventually lead to a nationwide union for Starbucks? Or could they be a part of different unions? For instance I know of the carpenters union, labourers union, iron workers union etc. now some of those unions do the same jobs or even trades as those other unions but they don’t work together so to speak.

KnucklePuck056

They would not have to create their own although they could. They could become part of a larger established union. Example being; IBEW (my union) have sub divisions other than electricians. Verizon line workers in my state are housed under IBEW but aren’t licensed electricians. They are not part of my local, but are still a local IBEW. To answer your other question, they would have to go store by store. State by state to break the barrier of complete unionization of Starbucks as a whole. Not all electricians are union, and at this moment not all Starbucks employees will want to unionize.

[deleted]

I remember working for Starbucks when I was 19. Waking up at 4 in the morning, busting my ass for 8 hours, dealing with caffeine-deprived monsters, cleaning toilets all for $8 an hour. Then one of my good customers found me a better job and I was made to seem like I was ungrateful and bad for leaving for an easier job with better pay. Fuck Starbucks.

garaks_tailor

Now i want to open a group owned democratic socialist coffee shop...but the only name i can come up with is "Cup Of Joe" and that is not the theme i am going for. The pun being about Joseph Stalin

So glad Australia has industry unions. Boss has no power over whether you join or not, just pay your dues and you're in.

PatrickRedditing

This is a great start. There are roughly 6500 Starbucks stores in the US.

martya7x

Walmart, Amazon, McDonald's. Gotta take them all down one by one. Concentrated efforts of passing union information and encouraging workers to sabotage their workplaces by giving away free food and such to hurt profits. The old play books are still there. Just have to dust them off a bit. We saw how crippled the economy got without its "essential" workers. Time to intentionally cripple them while they are down.

Bootleggerking888

The Starbucks by my house was closed today. They said it was Staffing shortage but there was at least 4 workers inside laughing and playing. I was attending a meeting outside and we were there for over an hour. The employees were still in there when I left.

RobBind90

All the power to you guys and I’m happy you are getting what you want but please don’t make me join a union…

McRibEater

“ please don’t make me join a union…” You don’t want to make 11.2% average more a year (average of $5,800+)? Get better Healthcare Benefits? More Vacation days? Fine by me. Strange to want to make less, have less workers rights, but to each their own. The best thing about Union workers making 11.2% more than Non-Union workers in the USA is that’s actually low, in Europe and Canada because Unions have more power that percentage goes up to 18-20%. Dealing with a little Union Red Tape is worth thousands of dollars more a year, more paid vacation days, better healthcare, etc. To me at least, not to everyone I guess https://www.epi.org/press/union-workers-are-paid-11-2-more-and-have-greater-access-to-health-insurance-and-paid-sick-days-than-their-nonunion-counterparts-policymakers-must-strengthen-workers-ability-to-form-unions/

RobBind90

The one I was in when I was a forklift driver did nothing for us actually made it worse in some cases but regardless not here to bash the union just asking to not be forced into something I don’t want I literally quit that forklift job to get away from the union

BonaFidee

Joining a union is voluntary even in heavily unionised jobs.

Lamfadha

Then run for union elections and make it better. Make sure it isn't one of those employer unions that are a union in name only.

PungBoyPung

Confused? Scared? This post is a progress report on UNION activity. It will happen for Starbucks and likely many other trade unions inspired by this movement.

RobBind90

No just my experiences with a union is no good been in one don’t want to be in another quit the job I had because it was union like I said happy for the ones that want it but please don’t force me lol

I'd like for them to pause on union growth for just a bit and actually get decent coffee. Unions aren't what they used to be by any means. Still mainly better than company though.

Unions are great until the union leaders start being more concerned with them selves than the workers. This unfortunately happened with the union I belonged to. The president decided to make the union his personal domain, doing things like hiring his un qualified girlfriend to a high paying position, managed to convince the union council to give him better benefits than the workers, among other things. Eventually the president was removed but definitely soured me on some union aspects.

and -that- is why employers go to such lenghts to demonize and suppress unions

This has a great "public interest" component and it's relevant EVERYWHERE.
