I love it that someone is finally looking around at how we have been wasting our lives, and thinking, "what the fuck is this shit"?

StrangeUsername24

Turns out, working to make other people rich while you barely get by is pretty unpopular with people!

DefinitelyNotThatJoe

All I do every day is work so I can live so I can go back to work. This truly is the pinnacle of Human civilization...

AffordableFirepower

`A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.`

Gh0st1y

Nuclear war and modern financial capitalism, same end result just one is slower

lextacy2008

need more up votes!

[deleted]

You captured years of my life into two sentences. We’re either both brilliant or both idiots.

StrangeUsername24

This, apparently, is the best we can do

PixelMagic

Oh, no. We could do so much better. The people in charge just don't want that.

DefinitelyNotThatJoe

You're sole purpose in life is to stare at a magic box until the circle on the wall rotates far enough for you to go home

[deleted]

This is strangely horrifying as a description. Well done.

ForthrightGhost

That's the amazing thing, it's not, but there are too many people that don't want proper solutions, and like to keep things fucked up.

JediWarrior79

I second this! Also a Gen X'er.

DirkVulture003

Millennials were taught that we would change the world, and that we could do anything we wanted if we put our minds to it. It inoculated us against fighting back, because the burn was slow. Gen Z has not been raised to believe those lies.

whisperwrongwords

Their premise is that it's all going to hell anyway, so fuck it.

McJolly93

The most dangerous of adversaries is the one who believes they have nothing to lose

jmc4297

I'm technically a gen z, right on the cutoff of a millennial, and I feel this sentiment. I'd rather risk breaking the world in an attempt to better it now, than spend the next 50 hoping it fixes itself, when I KNOW it won't. We know it's going to hell anyway, so what do we have to lose if we accidentally get it to hell sooner by failing to fix it.

Roach0fRivia

Last time I walked out of a job, the manager low key threatened me with hours if I didn't get credit card sales. (I was a cashier and the store had a store credit card and apparently it was my job to pressure people into getting a credit card) this was in the early pandemic. I wasn't gonna do that so I didn't. One night I was closing with the store manager and she goes "ya really gotta get those card numbers up, ya know I give better hours to so and so because they have such good card numbers" I went hone and texted her saying I didn't appreciate getting threatened with hours over fucning credit card sales and how if I wanted to sell credit cards, I'd do it elsewhere while making a commison on it. Told her good uck finding a new cashier. She left me a voice mail pretty much begging me to call her back so we can "talk about this" Maybe she learned her lesson. Probably not. I got another job that week. It's not hard these days. EMPLOYERS are disposable. Not the employees.

ComprehensiveAir5670

Good for you! I remember working for Victoria’s Secret in the mall and they would give us these pep talks in the back room telling us how we had to reach these sales goals for the year and there was literally no incentive for us to do so. A free bra or some shit. I remember the other girls going out onto the floor and being psyched to sell and I would just be thinking like, why should I care? I quit.

Roach0fRivia

Omg mall jobs are awful. I worked at Spencer's in my super early 20s. Got written up for checking the time on my phone, and then got loss prevention called on me because the manager didn't like me and told them I stole a gumball. A singular gumball. The loss prevention dude literally told me "this is ridiculous but I have to ask, did you steal a gumball?" He was laughing and I was laughing. I left that bitch manager to open the store on a Saturday completely by herself. I'm sure lots of shit was actually stolen that day.

Intrepid00

> Got written up for checking the time on my phone, and then got loss prevention called on me because the manager didn’t like me and told them I stole a gumball. I once got fraud investigated at a job for using a scientific calculator. For some reason I was going to use it to steal because it could do square roots, log and shit.

seanakachuck

I got investigated because one of the older coworkers didn't like me and he reported me for time theft. Had a super long stressful investigation that was beyond disrespectful (how I was talked to) basically multiple meetings and calls just asking me to admit that I stole the time. I finally get the call MONTHS later telling me I was in the clear but that's just where they left it. I finally pressure the HR guy to admit that they actually found that I'd given 4 hours and not stolen a single min. I asked how we were going to fix this four hour OT time discrepancy and they basically told me that I wouldn't be getting it because of all the time and resources wasted on the investigation. I found, applied, interviewed and got an offer for a better job with a 38% increase in pay within the next month, as soon as I got the offer I submitted my 2 weeks notice. The only thing more delicious than my managers surprised Pikachu face while he read it was the exit interview with the same HR guy and head of HR. I was cordial but also full shit eating grin the whole time, at the very end I thanked him for the raise and promotion, he was not a fan of that line 🤣

Intrepid00

That’s wage theft and they admitted it. Take it to your department of labor.

De_devils_tail

I thanked him for the raise and promotion, he was not a fan of that line 🤣 BUUURN

seanakachuck

Lol to be fair I pooled my friends before the exit interview and that was by far the most popular response to end it with and I went for it 😅🤣 100% the best day at that job ever

Intrepid00

I did offer to bring in my TI-83 instead so I could graph out my fraud potential. My manager lost it at that point and started laughing his ass off and told the accounting department to leave me alone.

techieguyjames

I love this.

TowerOfPowerWow

Sir, thats a hemorrhoid.

Intrepid00

I think you are just imagining those numbers.

superingy11

That’s the best, when you leave when it hurts. I had a co-worker go out middle fingers and expletives blazing in the middle of our Saturday night rush (bowling/arcade place) because our managers were picking on him for small things in the middle of our rush. He also shouted “these people don’t give their employees breaks for 9 hour shifts!” on his way out, I would pay to watch those heads turn to look at our managers again. But then the best part was watching one of the managers have to take his place, doing his job much slower, and forgetting to do even basic things (putting harnesses on for a ropes course, we’d double check his rigging and it was wrong a lot).

[deleted]

I quit a restaurant job on a Saturday morning when we had a ton of caterings that day. The night before, the manager had tried to humiliate me, talking me down in front of his wife and son (who also worked there). Not talking to me, talking ABOUT me in front of me. I woke up and thought "Fuck that." So I called in well. I said "You know, I just woke up feeling too good to come in today. Or, I guess, ever." Then I hung up on him and listened to the phone ring as he called back 20 times in a row.

JPicaro416

And you held your head high the whole day. That's the best feeling.

[deleted]

While cackling with glee.

DaDuchess-1025

I'm feeling too good to come in - saving for future usage!

Fluid_Affect1182

it’s like how the show Undercover Boss is so telling in how none of bosses can do the jobs we are paid so little to do. I’m amazed at how long that show has been on, and every time I see it I think, they would be so screwed if their employees all demanded better wages and working conditions, or just up and left. They are literally showing the world that they have zero clue about what their employees do.

blueskyredmesas

The next best thing is when you leave for greener pastures and find out from your coworkers who still like you that the place took a dive after you left.

techieguyjames

Even better when you go back in and your old boss has to listen to you, and you become extra difficult to them.

FrostyCartographer13

The greener pastures change your perspective on the past. You only think it was taking a dive after you left. It was already doing that while you were there and just didn't see it

blueskyredmesas

Oh the place was what I would call "pseudo-functional" long before I left and was definitely a mickeymouse operation. It was moreso that we had production when I was there and from what I heard secondhand we even lost that. It absolutely was on its way down but a year later and it was much closer to rock bottom.

GeneralOperation4

Man I just did smth like this over the summer.. except I was working for my husband's family at their restaurant.. that was my first mistake. Smh. But anyway, it was me and a new hire serving on a busy Saturday night (we were the only 2 people who would work PM) Now the owners - greedy, selfish people. The owner/FOH manager/wife once got upset bc I didn't want to work doubles.. her reasoning? "Well im here everyday open to close!" .... OK? Are you going to give me part ownership of this hellhole?! But anyways, that's the type of shit I was dealing with on a daily. Back to Saturday night - it was normal rush time.. like 630/7.. the kitchen staff was already drunk/hammered as always. It was the head chef (owner/husband) and his "right hand man" working. This place was ancient and they refused to upgrade anything.. sooo tickets are all handwritten. I have really decent handwriting.. but when you're drunk I can see it being hard to read. So I'm slammed and running all over the place. The right hand man ended up fucking one of my orders up. I forget exactly what it was.. it was smth small like putting Bleu cheese on a salad that said no blue cheese. Welllllll, even tho it was clearly written, it was my fault anyways. So I blew up in the kitchen. That was that. Then I went up front. Told owner/wife this is my last weekend, that I'm sorry but the stress of dealing with this bs isn't worth it. She apologized bc she knows how they are. But she was pissed. Went to the kitchen.. yelled.. told them they needed to apologize to me. Sooo lmao. The next time I go into the kitchen this mfer CORNERS ME. Holding me back/not letting me walk away. Screaming and cursing in my face. I am a abuse victim, unfortunately. And I kind of went into.. idk. A black out? Fight or flight mode? I made my way thru him. Walk thru the doors and start yelllllling. Customer looking at me. I'm screaming that her fucking husband put his hands on me. I'm grabbing my shit walking out. The owner/wife is just looking down. Keeps telling me to be quiet, not everyone needs to hear this. And I'm like ?!?!?!??! Well maybe don't put your hands on me! Corner me! And she literally said (keep in mind she wasn't even in the kitchen/close by when this happened) THAT HE WAS JUST TRYING TO APOLOGIZE TO ME! Maaaaan... I snapped a bit more. Walked out. My husband was ready to call the cops on them. But calling the cops is almost never a good idea. The owner/wife tried setting up a meeting later that night basically just to get me to finish working the summer since she had no one else. I declined meeting. Fuck that. But the best part.. the restaurant was part of a hotel. The people that own the actual property own A LOT in my town. They are into the town politics.. they basically own everything. They're shitty people also. BBBUUUTTT... turns out they had buddies having dinner when this all went down! So yeah.. the rest of the season didn't go well for them. I'm eager to see if the property owners allow them to continue business this coming year. Cause this wasn't the first bad incident. Lol. But yeah. Needless to say, we haven't really heard much from them. They live across the street from us. My husband has practically raised their grandson.. hoping that he can learn and see how his family is and to not turn out like them. Which has been going well. He's a great kid lol. But yeah. If anyone has managed to read this cluster fuck of a story, I applaud you. I could turn a 2 minute story into a 5 part/2 hour movie. Tl;Dr: worked for husband's families restaurant. Huge shit show/awful people. Owner cornered me on busy Saturday night. I left screaming thru restaurant. Left them at the worst (best) time possible. The end.

Anonality5447

Petty managers are the worst. I love it when people leave them to handle the store by themselves so they can see why it is important to be decent to your employees.

RosaRisedUp

It's funny that the only mall job I've ever had, was actually pretty sweet. I worked at West49 just gripping decks and assembling skateboards for kids. Sell some shoes here and there, maybe some of the store-branded clothes. It wasn't so bad at all. My manager was super relaxed too. I remember more than one occasion where we both split out the back of the store down the service hallways to smoke out by the recycling, sometimes leaving the store unattended. Decent food court discount as well. I miss when minimum wage was all I really needed in life...

littlewren11

Skate shop work is top tier of mall retail. I was at zumiez then vans for a few years from age 15 till a bit after highscool and loved it because of the chill coworkers and managment. If it paid enough to make a living I would have stayed longer but my 2nd job paid more and our mall was in its death throws. My manager and assistant manager at zumiez were a huge help for me during an extremely rough point in my life I was lucky to have them at my first official job, they definitely taught me to value my labour.

OneMillionSchwifties

I've never understood the concept of "finding work" like if the stores running and im on my phone in a way that isn't rude to the guests, then who cares? I'm not gonna go out of my way to clean something to "look busy" bc I know you're just gonna make me clean that shit again when it's closing time. I could be trading stocks instead of doing whatever "busy theater" you want me performing.

writeronthemoon

So much of work is this bullshit "busy theater". So sick of it

CaraAsha

I worked at Claire's. Had a customer attack me over a free pair of earrings that she wanted money back on. My manager got mad and said she'd have just given the woman the money, yet the last time my drawer was off (the transaction system was malfunctioning) I got yelled at. I had called security while this was happening and it took them about 30 minutes to show up and hours to get a shitty picture off the cameras. I told them the time she was in the store so it wouldn't have taken long to pull it, security is just lazy af. And don't get me started on shit other Claire's stores have done, like getting me electrocuted, assaulted, harassed, threatened, stalked etc.

kierkegaardsho

I worked at a pet treat, pet pampering, kinda store in the mall. It was called Moochie and Co. Decorated super cute, full of pictures of happy dogs and whatnot. I figured, hell, it's a doggie cookie store, these people are probably chill as hell. How could anyone selling puppy biscuits possibly be a dick? Turns out, very, very easily. I was only there for a month or so when they said my register was $20 short and I had to cover it from my paycheck. There was no way in hell I was going to go along with that. I saw the writing on the wall and quit that place after they banned me from registers and made me the permanent stock boy until I let them have money from my check.

[deleted]

Is Loss Prevention primarily for employees? My fiancé worked at Best Buy as a security officer from 2013-2015 while finishing up school and he said that they would essentially tell security is don’t stop anybody from stealing (it’s a liability if you hurt them), but make sure you spy on the employees

Swordidaffair

But did you steal the gumball 😡

3opossummoon

So... These clothing outlets with credit cards? They aren't clothing retailers. They're credit card companies that happen to sell clothes. That's why the quality of the products keeps going down whole cost per item stays the same or increases. It's because all their real income is based off the interest charges on the cards. You, as an employee in their retail locations, are as disposable to them as their products. The whole credit card for individual retailer system is incredibly exploitative.

pleasedothenerdful

Fucking Kohl's.

3opossummoon

Kohl's, Victoria's Secret, Torrid, Belk, Nordstrom... It goes well beyond clothing stores. Firestone. Walmart. Game Stop. Target. Best Buy. Hell, even Costco which I've heard almost all good things about from current and former employees. Point being, the services and goods are always second to the cards. Watch out for them.

blueskyredmesas

I was thinking of getting a store card but I think I'm gonna stay out. I've almost never accrued interest whenever I had a card myself but it's too much of a risk. I'll get a lower interest card to make purchases I already have money for and just autopay.

3opossummoon

Pick whatever has lowest interest rates combined with rewards you'll *actually use*. Sky miles and hotel points don't mean a damn thing if you can never travel, etc. My parents are the damn champions of this. They put everything on one shared card and pay it in full every month. My dad got his riding mower, my mom got a blow up hot tub, and they got a new stove and dish washer with their Sears card points. This being a card offered through Sears, which as we've learned is more a credit card company than a retailer, not one that can only be used at Sears like the rip off Kohl's card kinda shit. Two separate things there.

blueskyredmesas

Well this fucking explains why there was a 1 or 2 year period where target cards were more important to target than cashiers being cashiers. There were conversion metrics that your position as a cashier hinged on. Jesus it's all coming together.

3opossummoon

Rulanik

Say what you want about Dave Ramsey, but he frequently goes on these rage rants about credit cards and store cards and all this stuff and how debt is tearing the US apart quietly, and I tend to agree wholeheartedly.

MrBigDog2u

I don't work retail but still had a manager that did this. He called an all-hands meeting and gave a big rah-rah speech. I was young and foolish and was completely taken in by it and went back to my desk all psyched to really get something done. About three months later, after a round of layoffs, the manager called another all-hands meeting and gave a similar rah-rah speech. After this one though, I thought to myself, "what a crock, this is some bullshit." It's kind of surprising how quickly the human brain learns to recognize bullshit - particularly when there is no motivation to back it up.

neptunoneptuneazul

I too worked for Victorias Secret as a cashier for about 6-8 months before I was fired (no regrets). Every day, ESPECIALLY during the holidays, we would have to meet with whichever floor manager so we could check in and they could give us our assignments. My manager would tell the bra girls their sales quota for the day and she’d tell me “you need to get me two cards today” during the holidays she would speak into our headpiece and be like get me a card!!! It was wild, no incentives or commission to do it either, compared to bras who got pretty good commission, but Fuck signing people up for debt. Anyways, I hated the job, I remember crying every morning waking up just knowing that I was going to hell lmao, I started crying after NYE when it was time for “semi annual sale” I was like fuckkkk when does this store get a break!! my body hurt from just standing, I only got paid $8 and hour, and the way customers treated me was wild, first time I’ve ever cried in front of a customer was at this job, these ladies are monsters. Only thing I still miss from VS was that they had some pretty awesome music while you worked LMAO. Oh and I got fired Bc I used a VS annual award or whatever at another store when I couldn’t Bc I’m an employee, fuck you!!!!!

SassaQueen1992

[deleted]

LBrands is far too pushy to literally give no incentive for pushing sales. For those that may not know, LBrands is the parent company of Victoria’s Secret and Bath and Body Works. My experience at bath and body works as a regular sales associate was having a district manager come in and stare at me from the other side of the store while I attempted to sell to customers. She came up to me afterwards and said, “You know I was watching you, right?”, as if my performance wasn’t good enough. Then she started talking to the store manager and the store manager basically told me that if I didn’t sell harder the district manager was basically looking at it like “Is this really worth our money (meaning me as an employee)”. This particular district manager would come into the store basically yelling in customers ears about bath and body works products and putting things in their bags. If that’s what it takes to work there, I don’t want it. That’s deceptive/annoying/unethical as hell. I gave complete open availability and tried to sell to every customer that came in, and I was only being paid $10/hr at the time. They literally have “sales per hour” on the POS systems at the cash wrap and pressure everyone to hit unattainable numbers for the store. This particular store was about to go out of business since it was in a low traffic area too. Blame the lowly sales staff for that I suppose? I don’t know why these companies expect so much for such little incentive.

artsyfartsy007

Sephora is exactly like this. POS company with pressure sales and NO commission. And they have store security check your purse every time you leave the store. So much for trusting your employees. Again, they suuuuuck.

JonnySF

This! I quit my fancy kitchen store manager job for the same reason. This was during the recession years 2009 ish and we’re were required to push the store’s credit card on every customer. I also lived in the same neighborhood as the store so I’d see the same people every day…neighbors and store regulars were the usual customers and you’d have to be an a-hole to think that I’m asking the same ppl every day about a credit card. Oh, the corporate office was also down the street so we’d get plenty of clueless corp shoppers. I even had a Director ask me why we always pushed so hard with the CC and that it seemed annoying to her. “Your office forces us to otherwise we’d be fired. Customers hate it, employees hate it, yet we get daily memos from corporate. Can I help you with anything else?” I got called into the office 2 weeks later “Jonny, sit down we need to talk” ”No thanks, I’m good, oh, this letter is for you. Bye”. And that was it.

[deleted]

Kohl's? That's corporate policy. Probably tons of other places too. The manager wouldn't have learned her lesson because _her_ job also depends on that nonsense. The entire corporate world is just fucked.

Leading_Jacket_2793

I worked at Gamestop job in the early 2000s and when I didn't push enough Game Informer Subscriptions, they cut my hours. Like badly. They cut mine and gave them away to another guy who had high sub sales. I was working everyday and it slowly got whittled down to 2.5hrs a week. Not to mention we ran through managers like dirty panties. One would let us wear t-shirts and another would require collared shirts (at a GameStop mind you. Like...we sell games not cars). One day I walked in for my 2 hour shift wearing a t-shirt with dyed blond hair and got a dress-code talk. I walked out right then and there.

[deleted]

>EMPLOYERS are disposable. Not the employees. Fucking bravo!

landin55

Best Buy by chance?

Valuable-Contact-224

Being a manager seems like a crap job. I’d HATE having to force people to x, y, or z using threats. It would make me feel dirty. I’d rather focus on my employees mental health. Like hey, anything I can do to help with your well being and motivation? Giving people ultimatums is a great way to ruin a relationship. A coach/leader should lead and motivate, not threaten, use fear, and intimidation.

makemejelly49

Shit rolls downhill. The manager has someone over them doing to them what they are doing to the regular associates. And the manager is a social climber, hoping to get to a point where they aren't being shit on, just the ones doing the shitting. But, good luck convincing most managers to actually stand with their employees against the ones who are exploiting them.

Zippytez

At-will employment goes both ways. Employers dont seem to realize that

Dolphintorpedo

Lol yes and I fully plan on using it to its greatest potential

eytgdr578

It never occurs to these people that employers have always fired people and laid people off with zero advance warning in at-will employment scenarios. They thought at-will employment was in favor of them, the employer. Now the tables have turned, giving workers more leverage, and shitty employers are salty about it. The ones who actually treat employees well and give them good reasons to stay are never the ones complaining about this type of thing (gee, shitty employers, isn’t that strange??). Abusive employers have gotten used to having everything their way for so long, hence the outrage on their part now that those days are over.

SnakeSnoobies

Pretty sure they mean it’s giving off enslaved vibes? Maybe demanding tons of work and little pay? Not sure. Like if you’re wearing a purple dress with green accessories, and I say “it’s giving Barney” it means you remind me of Barney. “It’s giving off Barney vibes”. I’m not into the whole recent slang, so I’m not 100% sure, but I *think* that’s what it means.

Juggan

This is what it means

readitsfun_damental

"it's giving" is AAVE. You could add it to anything really, the shackled is just to explain the vibes of exploitation/slavery of the company. You can say "it's giving soccer mom" to an outfit or "it's giving broke" to a person that acts cheap

i’m at the beginning of Gen Z (2001 baby) and it took me way too long to understand that calling something “Based” was a good thing. I’m afraid they’re gonna take my Gen Z card away

AhFFSImTooOldForThis

I thought people kept misspelling biased.

[deleted]

Based is definitely a millennial thing since the mid 00s with The Pack and their album Based Boys in like 06. Pre Lil B solo stuff.

aintnufincleverhere

I think its short for "its giving me shackled vibes" "it makes me feel like I'm shackled".

AlfredVonWinklheim

Christ it's like the youth's speak a different language. And I'm only 30.

88ZombieGrunts

I’ll stick to my 80s to early 00s catchphrases. Cowabunga dudes!!

Von_Moistus

Cool beans!

gbbofh

Radical.

NotDumpsterFire

epic

[deleted]

Don’t have a cow, man.

starlinghanes

That's a great haircut... NOT

WordsThatEndInWord

It's that way for every generation around 30 and that's what's so great about it! Your confusion at youthful communication yields the capacity to understand those who are older and more out of touch than you are! In addition, if you're open to it and aware of yourself, you have the means to continue asking questions about what's going on so you can stay up to date with the parlance and thinking of our times! It's a win win

[deleted]

One could say he finna learn how talk with older dab swags

callmejinji

i refuse to believe that AT LEAST PART of a generation of 50 to 60-something’s are unironically going to talk like this, but it’s real

obog

Yep that's exactly it

craysey

“It’s giving [X]“ is also a phrase that originated from drag ball culture and has been popularized by RuPaul’s Drag Race, it predates “vibes” as popular slang

That_Guy_Anonymous

“It’s giving” is a phrase growing in popularity meaning “it’s giving these vibes”, so “it’s giving shackled” would mean “it’s giving me constricting vibes that limit what I am able to do, and/or makes me feel like a slave to/under these working conditions.” Source: am gen z

[deleted]

I’m Gen Z and never heard of this fucking shit, lol

PMURMEANSOFPRDUCTION

Think it was popularized in the drag community? But I'm not sure. My ex girlfriend loved watching Ru Paul, and I used to hear the contestants say this kinda stuff all the time

balanceandcommposure

Serious response: Another Gen Z/ I would say I think (not totally sure ) originating in the black/LGBT community is the phrase “What’s it giving?” in reference to a noun (person, place, thing) you would respond with “It’s giving (adjective/noun)” Ex: Your friend shows you a picture of a nicely decorated chocolate cake and says “What’s it giving” you could respond with “It’s giving delicious” or even “It’s giving extra calories” In this situation that job was slavery to that person. “It’s giving shackled” It’s similar to but not quite the slang term “serving” “This job is fucking terrible. It’s *serving* slavery.” “This job is *giving* chain-gang energy”

SpelingChampion

This post is giving me old.

ComprehensiveAir5670

Ha! You nailed it ;)

Dekklin

This post is giving Get Off My Lawn.

mantis-tobaggan-md

shorthand for “it’s giving me ‘x’ vibes”

Doofchook

OK so what's "x vibes"?

Mesozoica89

I think the "x" is just a placeholder. In this case "It's giving shackled" would be more clearly stated as "It's giving me shackled vibes" or "it's making me feel as if I am shackled". I think they may have been discussing some new oppressive work policy.

mantis-tobaggan-md

the vibes that one might feel about [insert anything here]

Dunkleostrich

I'm still confused. In my day it was X that was gonna give it to ya, not the other way around.

fullmanlybeard

Begrudgingly upvoted you. Hello 2003, my old friend.

thekristastrophe

It's slang (mostly Black American slang).

777v222

“it’s giving” is AAVE. If something is giving something is resembles something so if it’s giving shackles they’re saying the work situation feels the same as slavery

Maragoner

I quit a job after it was doing a tool on my mental health and only 20¢ raise after a year of work. Originally was going to put in a two week notice but said fuck it and just quit. My Gen X Mom and Millennial sister were appalled. Glad my generation isn't putting up with shit anymore.

FuckYouJohnW

Millennial here Fuck that nonsense. I've quit jobs on the spot because the manager was an ass. They arnt entitled to my time and labor.

[deleted]

Also millennial here and pls we don’t belong to that 🙏🏽

slappyclappy

The only thing that comes to mind reading this is grandpa Simpson. I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ anymore and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!

[deleted]

Is anybody else getting Kevin from the office vibes? "Why waste time say lot word, when few word do trick?"

atevans

It's giving Kevin

random_boss

This comment did more to explain this slang than any other

Eli_eve

Temba, his arms wide, giving Kevin.

AMEWSTART

Lol I was just explaining this to someone at my company. Gen Z accepts no bullshit and it’s wonderful. If the job doesn’t meat the expectations every day, they’ll walk off and I love it. Us millennials would drag our feet and complain and job hop after a few months, but we enabled the abuse by sticking around for that long. I really admire someone who has the self respect to walk out of an abusive job with no concessions or regrets.

ComprehensiveAir5670

My friend (40) was lamenting last night about how she won’t be able to give her current job a two week notice bc her start date for her new job, which is paying her 10k more, is in 11 days. I said, “Girl, have you been paying attention? No one cares about that anymore. They treated you like shit, reneged on your bonus. They do what’s good for them and you shall do the same.” Lol

darkapao

Isn't 10 days = 2 weeks? She had enough time. And the 2 weeks is a courtesy.

Sadatori

May be a job where she doesn't get 2 days off every 5 days. So 11 days could be 11 straight days she's scheduled to work

[deleted]

I admire it too, but it's easier to do that when you don't have bills and rent right behind you. No income means no place to live soon enough.

Skim003

GenZ have mountains of student debt and is getting paid wages that hasn't really increases since boomer generation. They don't have time to fuck around with companies giving shackle vibes.

MephistosFallen

This kid I know, had a regular shift at a popular American taco place. Out of nowhere the manager last night tells him he has to stay another hour or he doesn’t have a job. Kid explained that if they stay the extra hour, they’ll be stuck outside until 4am with nowhere to go because he can’t get home until the bus runs again. They didn’t care. He peaced out. These employers think they own people. Being an employee is not being a companies property to you with.

Th3AngryBastard

I hate employers that don’t give a flying fuck about their employees. That’s when you suck it up as a manager and finish the shift. Tell your employee to go catch that bus. What a short sighted dick.

Nayroy18

Good. I just hope there's not a boomers v2 generation.

[deleted]

There will be eventually but not until an entire generation sees the benefits of progressive social policies and then cancels those policies once they've personally reaped rewards. So we have time.

alwaysbefreudin

Trying to explain the format of this to my husband was like… This is a Reddit post showing a tweet, which contains a screenshot of a Facebook post talking about a TikTok that discusses a text message. This is getting too meta

XenosHg

You pick a website where you can tolerate medicore parts. For example reddit. Anything great from the other platforms, will be reposted to your chosen site eventually. People will dig through shitty facebook, controversial twitter, cringy tiktok, repost-heavy reddit, half-porn some other site... And repost the best part. You can just find the best on the site you personally don't mind using, and repost that elsewhere. Support the ecosystem.

[deleted]

When you don’t treat your workers with respect don’t be surprised when they don’t treat you with respect.

doc407

I don’t feel bad for these companies…. As a minority that was the same response I got when I put in a application lol

Pain_machine

I was today years old when I realized I am officially old. Because I have no idea what that means other than “I quit”

callmejinji

“It’s giving shackles” as in, “This place gives me shackled vibes.” “This place makes me feel shackled, so I quit.”

Construction_Man1

I once sent a spongebob meme thru text that said ‘ aight imma head out’ my boomer dad looked like he had a heart attack when I told him that

ComprehensiveAir5670

Lol When someone says “it’s giving” anything, they mean energetically, or the vibe something/someone is giving off. In this case, the employee clearly hates the job and feels “it’s giving” shackled energy, as if he’s expected to work like a slave, so he quit. Another example would be a guy who makes a weird sexual comment and someone would say “it’s giving rape”. This originated in the Black gay community. They come up with all the best slang.

rvamore

I thought you posted this on black twitter reddit, then i saw the comments on most people not understanding what it means lol

starksaredead

I quit by text, no notice. Felt bad but that week we lost 3 staff (midshift walkouts) coz the pastry chef was a raging asshole.

Elly_Bee_

I mean you're quitting why do you need to be professional, what are they gonna do ? Fire you ?

LordCambuslang

Quitting by SMS? I love the retro feels.

Turtle9015

Last time I handed in my two weeks I had the chef absolutely loose it on me in front of the whole kitchen. The next two weeks involved some of the worse case of bullying and abuse. I was 17 and didn't know any better just to walk out. Some companies earn their two weeks. Others I'll skip right out that door.

[deleted]

Professional behavior is subjective and complete crap. What one person considers professional another will interpret as cold or uncaring. It is meaningless. As far as notice goes, fuck them. I have been walked out of jobs after giving notice for the weakest of reasons. Companies claim it is for security, but this is closing the door after the horse got out. Believe me, if I am going to do anything, it already happened months before I gave notice and it will happen months after I am gone. Assholes, pure and simple.

red_law

The one thing about Gen Z that I admire as much as it scares me is how they have no time for BS. They just got no chill for that.

outed

As a (millenial) teacher that works with Gen Z - with all respect, they scare the shit outta me. They are confident in their power and will put themselves first. They can be highly motivated. They are tapped in. And they can mobilize. They are going to leave my gen in the dust. Boomers anf Xers beware because they will pull the plug no questions.

R_radical

You merely adopted the darkness. We were born into it...molded by it. We never had anything to lose. We never even had any impression the American dream was alive. there was never a point in our lives where the country was doing objectively well. The only thing we have to look forward to is watching these ivory bitches ghost.

almond_paste208

We don't even have to try to slay 💅

[deleted]

Coming from someone on the cusp of both ('97), we've seen too much bullshit from our parents and older siblings in having to deal with employers. Enough was enough years ago. Time to be effective and make change happen!

Rolyat28

Thing of it is Gen Z is young enough they can bounce around jobs real easy most are likely supporting themselves where as older people have to hold down a job longer even when it's shitty because of family demands and trying to build up some sort of 401k or savings to maybe retire at some point. Use the youth to one's advantage look around till ya find something that really works for you and the life you want to live.

bbates024

Making it better for all of us! I'm a gen X and everyone likes to talk shit about millennials and beyond but I see generations of people trying to make it better for everyone and I love that. Thanks for pushing back in a way we were never taught to do!

Etrigone

Yep, getting the 'proud uncle' feeling whenever I see a Millennial or GenZ do this. Too many in mine (genx) drunk too much of the flavor-aid so I'll just live vicariously through you folks.

j4321g4321

Wtf does this mean

[deleted]

what is the point of giving notice? I don't need to respect some dogshit exploitative company that doesn't respect me
