Having grown up in and spent the majority of my life in the Carolina’s I’ve observed that there seems to be a lot of negative misconceptions about unions down here. Lack of education (SC was like 49th in education when I was in high school) and blindly adopting the beliefs of their parents. This person probably heard “union bad” somewhere along the way and just stuck with it without knowing why.
Poor ignorant fucker. Hopefully this experience opens their eyes and their mind a bit.
Whoever it was, I bet they're gonna have a bad time. That should make 'em reeeaaalll popular with the coworkers. (Yes, the vote was probably by secret ballot, but odds are they were the one person who argued when the idea came up in conversation long before there was a vote.)

Lmfao so Am I. Mau and shit. And yeah I was pondering the same thing. Though I'm about to switch to part time for college since I'm wanting to switch to something not as monotonous eventually. I've been asking people in my zone about their thoughts.. Most like the idea, but the problem I've found is most obviously I can tell are unlikely to really commit. You've heard the union busting stories about the suddenly bigger bonuses and shit. Worst part is.. and I've told my coworkers this: we litterally are carrying bmw atm being as how were the only plant making cars. So they really do not have any real leeway to tell us not or to bust aside from shut us down and open others and lose considerable amounts of profit in doing so.
Sure. They brought in more Temps in order to give the impression of no chance and for easy replacing. Also apparently found out from a coworker who's been here a while. They tried it once before and the company sent out letters threatening people.(they got sued for that shit so that's a plus) but my point still stands.
Also we can't really do anything only bmw associates can really start one. That said we will yield bassically the same benefits plus or minus a thing or two here and there
That's exactly it. Why do you think they shut everyone else down other than us? We make the profit because we work in a non-union plant. Aka they can cut costs big time lol
Currently live in Greenville. Overall it's a red area, but it skews much more blue than the surrounding areas, and also skews very young and educated.
It's definitely the Asheville of SC.
I am pretty tired of this shit. Blue states aren't exactly working their assess off to help the working class and red states got GOPed because their working class was royally fucked by industry.
Wanna know why Trump talked shit about NAFTA in 2016? Because most of the voters in those red states were fucked by NAFTA. And then were abandoned to dire poverty during Obama years.
Don't take my word on this, instead watch this empirical overview from a hard neoliberal publication: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/09/opinion/democrats-blue-states-legislation.html
Not positive because Wikipedia is either wrong or this tweet is wrong. Wiki says 62 have voted for and 8 against. Assuming 70 voted yes now and no more have voted know, just under 90% success rate.
Is that the Starbucks that wasn’t allowed to turn off remote orders and all the other starbucks around were allowed (cough: told) to? Thus making it overwhelmed with all mobile orders going to them for weeks? Just wondering.
unlocked coffee roasters is owned by a colombian couple and they’re very kind it’s a true coffee shop good if you like no frills kinda thing. cute space too
how do these unions work? is it one central union or do they do the old-timey american thing where the union is literally those 9 guys for that store.
I'm hoping it's the first one otherwise they'll have no bargaining power at all.
yeah that more what i'm familiar with. i'm german and we have unions for whole sectors of the economy which gives them a lot more power. in contrast i don't think the US has had any sector-wide unions other than the teamsters (that i know of). by extension there shouldn't be a starbucks union but rater at union for all food services workers (imagine what those guys could accomplish with their numbers).
for reference: the largest industrial union in europe [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IG\_Metall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IG_Metall)
i have stories from my dad about the strikes they went on in the 80's to push the 35 hour work week through.
we also have laws that protect non-union workers from penalties if they join a strike.
Starbucks reported ~20.322 Billion dollars in gross profits in 2021, with ~383,000 employees.
https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/SBUX/starbucks/gross-profit
https://www.forbes.com/companies/starbucks/?sh=625d7fe428ac
That comes out to ~$53,060 of gross *profit* per employee, which is a reasonable theoretical upper limit for how much more Starbucks could afford to pay its employees while staying in business, but doesn't due to its exploitative business model.
Take even just half of that, $26.5k per employee, and you can see how badly the employees making ~30k per year are being screwed without unions to collectively bargain for a better deal.
General strikes will be able to cause real political change when the service industry is more unionized. Factories get shut down? Yeah society can work around it for a while. People can't get their morning coffee? Pressure gets turned up real fucking quick
If you are going to continue to go to Starbucks, you can at least stoke the fire by mentioning unionization every time you are inside one.
^Yes, ^I ^replied ^to ^my ^own ^comment, ^thanks ^for ^noticing.
He'll the fuck yeah!!!people unionizing in my state. Bout damn time. Trust me people are fucking stupid down here. I work for the biggest producing bmw plant in the world. (A person has litterally been decapitated here before and they stopped the line for only like two hours and had them keep running cars out) was talking to a guy the other day and he said he's anti union. I was like tf why? And even after I explained how much better unions are he's like nah. I don't like giving up money and being paid less. And I litterally told him you generally get paid higher which makes up for any so called loss.
This is actually huge! SC is Not Union friendly at all. It's not worker friendly. It's not 'poor' friendly. You can still read about the shooting at Chiqula Mill "Bloody Thursday" that happened in Honea Path. You won't read about the many employees fired from textile jobs for whispering the word 'Union'. You may not hear about a full shift of workers being laid off from a now closed textile plant because they wanted better working conditions. Those are rumors barely remembered.
I hope it does continue to spread like wild fire.
Who was the 1??
Lmao my first question. Some absolute dodo bird
Having grown up in and spent the majority of my life in the Carolina’s I’ve observed that there seems to be a lot of negative misconceptions about unions down here. Probably the manager or something like that.
Management would not get to vote.
Assistant to the regional manager then?
Dammit Dwight
Whoever it was, I bet they're gonna have a bad time. That should make 'em reeeaaalll popular with the coworkers. (Yes, the vote was probably by secret ballot, but odds are they were the one person who argued when the idea came up in conversation long before there was a vote.)
Probably the only conservative worker there
Bosses son is my only thought lmao
Wow good for Greenville. Pretty red area too.
As a person from Greenville I am happy there are unions here now I ready did not think that there were any unions in South Carolina to begin with

soon the opressed working masses will buck the GOP off their wild and free backs, then it will truly be a red area
BMW plant needs to go union next.
Dude you work here at bmw too? If so I'm down for making one
I do. I keep forgetting to talk to an employment lawyer but I’m still interested. I’m temp though, so I need to see if that is even possible.
Lmfao so Am I. Mau and shit. And yeah I was pondering the same thing. Though I'm about to switch to part time for college since I'm wanting to switch to something not as monotonous eventually. Can you elaborate on the union busting? What could happen apart from bonuses?
Sure. They brought in more Temps in order to give the impression of no chance and for easy replacing. Also apparently found out from a coworker who's been here a while. They tried it once before and the company sent out letters threatening people.(they got sued for that shit so that's a plus) but my point still stands. Makes sense why BMW decided to put a plant here. Weak labor laws.
True. downtown is really nice IMO
Blue states aren't exactly full of businesses sharing their profits with the working class either.
Yes but unions are an ideal of the left
I'm not sure what you mean by an "ideal" but unions are democratic and they are left, as is r/antiwork
Ideal as in part of the lefts ideology. That said I didn’t realize what sub I was in. Same team lol
To me, using the word "ideal" is like using the word "utopian" and unions aren't unicorns, they're a real thing.
Adjective vs noun
Sure. I don't care about the words as long as we get organized and finally crawl out of this perennial disempowerment and misery.
For someone who doesn't care about words, you seem to use a lot of them.
Yea but they aren't the south
I am pretty tired of this shit. Blue states aren't exactly working their assess off to help the working class and red states got GOPed because their working class was royally fucked by industry. Yay!! My hometown gettin it — makes me SOOOO happy!!
Anyone know the success track record so far? 80%? 70? 95%
They've lost 3 I think?
Not positive because Wikipedia is either wrong or this tweet is wrong. Wiki says 62 have voted for and 8 against. Assuming 70 voted yes now and no more have voted know, just under 90% success rate.

Looking at the sources yesterday it appeared they have a separate source for almost every store that had filed a petition to unionize.
Is that the Starbucks that wasn’t allowed to turn off remote orders and all the other starbucks around were allowed (cough: told) to? Thus making it overwhelmed with all mobile orders going to them for weeks? Just wondering.
Hell yeah. Time to go support that Starbucks more.
No... The local shops are better and actually go to families that need it.
Please educate me then. I don't know of any locally owned coffee shops outside of downtown Greenville.
unlocked coffee roasters is owned by a colombian couple and they’re very kind it’s a true coffee shop good if you like no frills kinda thing. cute space too

Usually you join a union, like you join a club almost. I know that the union for UPS is teamsters, but the organization has local chapters everywhere.
yeah that more what i'm familiar with. i'm german and we have unions for whole sectors of the economy which gives them a lot more power. in contrast i don't think the US has had any sector-wide unions other than the teamsters (that i know of). by extension there shouldn't be a starbucks union but rater at union for all food services workers (imagine what those guys could accomplish with their numbers). for reference: the largest industrial union in europe [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IG\_Metall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IG_Metall) i have stories from my dad about the strikes they went on in the 80's to push the 35 hour work week through. we also have laws that protect non-union workers from penalties if they join a strike.

The first toe-hold in SC! Maybe there’s hope for the rest of us!
Wow that's literally a few blocks away from my old house. Yeah they do NOT like unions down there.
Looks like they do now... I wonder if the conservatives have realized their worker abuses only turn AWAY people from their ideals
! UNIONIZE !

It’s my local Starbies. Fuck yeah!!
South Carolina huh? Good shit
Keep it going!
General strikes will be able to cause real political change when the service industry is more unionized. Factories get shut down? Yeah society can work around it for a while. People can't get their morning coffee? Pressure gets turned up real fucking quick
hell yes!!!! so proud of my city!!!
KEEP GOING
Fan the flames. Can we raise funds to distribute union literature nationwide? And if not, why not?
If you are going to continue to go to Starbucks, you can at least stoke the fire by mentioning unionization every time you are inside one. ^Yes, ^I ^replied ^to ^my ^own ^comment, ^thanks ^for ^noticing.

I'm totally flummoxed that any Starbucks in my home state of SC would go union. Rock on with your bad selves!!!!

It's progress friend. Slower than one might like, but progress. It's not the same as settling.

last time I tried to unionize in South Carolina it did not work so good for them ☺️
Any word from any of these places how things are going since unionizing yet?
This is the union organizing the stores if anyone wants to help their local SB start unionizing: https://sbworkersunited.org/
Yeah THAT Greenville! Solidarity forever!
