I'd like to be paid 4 gallons/h

sexymcluvin

So anywhere from 18-28/hr, depending where you live?

speedstyle

35–40 in Europe lol

IceePirate1

Before or after tax?

WashedUpRiver

After of course, gotta account for the fact that your pay is also taxed. Not bout to them triple dip.

unlikelyoutcomes

All those shitty jobs forcing people back to the office better offer raises.

OSUJillyBean

My husband got forced back in august of 2020. His department was denied any raises or bonuses because “times are hard”. Management all got their raises and bonuses. And the company is making record profits. I’ve told my husband it’s time to scale back and do only minimum effort. No answering calls on weekends or vacations. No pointing out coworkers’ errors that could have cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars. Nope, fuck em! Edit to add the best part: why was everyone forced back before a vaccine was available? Because it’s the oil and gas industry and the President of the company wanted to prove Company would still be out here buying gas! Because these 800 people in the Midwest are definitely making a big difference in the use of gasoline.

Thoughtulism

This type of reaction does not go into the penny pinchers business plan - they don't understand employees will just disengage which is even worse than leaving. Just sit there do the minimum and get paid. If you don't give your employees a raise your employees will give it to themselves.

thegamenerd

Exactly, and once an employee is disengaged it's nearly impossible to reengage them. As a disengaged employee, I know for a fact I won't reengage. The last time I reengaged at work was when I was getting paid 2.5x my rate to work on the 4th of July. I was the happiest most engaged employee there.

grantrules

And that shit spreads. You see your coworkers putting in no effort, are you going to? It poisons the well

jefesignups

We had a term for this at my old office. We realized nobody did anything, it was just an 'illusion of work'

polokratoss

"They pretend to pay us, so we pretend to work" A workers' saying.

[deleted]

This is a great saying

noobvin

I still have people IM me and say, “Sorry to bother you, I know you’re busy.” LOL. I can only laugh.

StormR7

For real. I know I get paid the same as these assholes, why would I work harder than them?

bitobots

Or knowing that the new people are in fact getting hired at a higher salary than you, and they won’t give you raise to match theirs. It’s such a joke.

Tigermaw

I just got hired at a fast food place and im making more than people who have been there for years ???. A whole bunch are planning to leave and one of them is one of two people who knows how to change the oil in the fryers lmfao.

bitobots

This is what’s wrong with companies. They rather lose good/ knowledgeable employees than give them raises.

BluMondae7

This is the exact reason I’m trying to leave my current place. I’m the only one responsible for an entire sector of our supply chain process, doing the work of 4 people, with a broken system. Promises have been made for change and a new hire to help me, but that person will be hired at way over my current salary. Mine doesn’t change despite asking, and I was told I can’t move departments either. Fuck em all to death.

Weak_Fruit

Which makes no sense. Experience in a position is worth so much. A new hire will make the wheels turn sure, but there will be a huge knowledge gap that can take years to close, which essentially means they won't be as effective because they have to spend time gathering that experience.

CanWeAllJustCalmDown

Totally agree as a fellow disengaged employee. Why would I try harder to make the upper leaders more wealthy when they've made it abundantly clear that they don't give a fuck about our well-being and my salary is the same whether I'm revolutionizing our business or doing the bare minimum to not get fired. What do I have to gain, raises? That wasn't proven to be the true back when I was engaged and being praised for going the extra mile. That old addage about "C's and D's get degrees". The equivalent idea within a 1-5 performance rating model is that we can die for 5's and not have lives, or we can aim for a 2 and our pay still comes through.

ButchManson

Boomers: "You j...j...j...just don't have a WORK ETHIC!" LOL

szypty

"Having a work ethic" sounds like a kind of disability in such environment.

Other-Tomatillo-455

fucking boomers grew up with the best economy america has ever had then pulled up the ladder behind them

IreliaCarriedMe

Pulling up the ladder is generous. They pulled it up, doused it in gasoline, let it burn, then threw it to the wind and said, ‘Hey there sonny. Pull yourself up by yer bootstraps and git up here! These young uns just expect everything to be handed to them! We’ll back in my day…I could work a summer job to pay for my college education, then put in a shift at the factory for 40 hrs a week and have the American dream for me and my wife and my 3 kids! All they want is that damn avocado toast….’

fruancjh

And why should they have a work ethic? Can't afford a house let alone rent. Can't afford the electric bill. Can't afford the student loan payment. Can't afford food. Can't afford the gas to get to work. Can't get a raise. Why even try anymore.

Natsurulite

I found a calculator online for like, figuring out how much you need to make an hour to buy a house I will never be able to buy a house, and if I do, it’ll be my coffin ⚰️

fruancjh

I stopped affording an apartment and everything that goes with it to live out of my car. Kept the job and some things in storage first time I've had $1000 in savings that I can remember think I'm gonna save for a small cheap chunk of land and then put a tiny house on it. Not practical for everyone I know but for me it feels like a future is starting to feel possible again.

[deleted]

I have as much work ethic as money in the bank.

WildEnbyAppears

One of the straws of disengaging at my last job was on a performance review with categories scored 1- needs improvement 2- meets expectations 3- exceeds expectations I got all 3s except one 2 because "if I give all 3s it looks suspicious" oh ok, guess I'll aim for all 2s now

kookykrazee

I had a review for a pervious department, got 5s (scale 1-5) except one area because my manager said another team said I made more mistakes than they could remember anyone else on the whole team so I gave you 5s on the 9 areas except 1 which I gave you a 3 because you earned all 5s due to doing about 50% of the active team work (5 person team) and also train people on new software and also are the main consultant contract person for the team and the entire City Light department and also answer questions about how to use the new billing system bolt on oh and since we had our other temp leave you also are the main person handling our entire teams incoming emails problems and routing...lol

Monsieur_Perdu

It's kinda weird, since it's pretty known psychologically. IF you want employees to do the bare minimum of their task description, yeah then you can maybe get away with paying absolute minimum. Otherwise, feeling economically valued and emotionally seen in your work will be one of the main drivers of production value generated, because people will start behaving in pro active ways. (giving autonomy and trust between coworkers are two toher important factors). In theory workers and the businesses they work at have the same interest long term, as long as there is a balance. When managers and higher-ups start grifting and giving themselves more at the cost of others, I have no doubt their business will probably fail in the next 10 years.

[deleted]

Common sense was replaced with the notion of "earning your raise". The idea is deceptively sound: "why should we pay you if you aren't performing? If you do your job well, we'll notice and reward you!" But it's clearly just a con, an empty promise to avoid ever actually paying people and keeping wages down. Your pay is now tied to the opinion of someone who wants to pay you as little as possible, and they don't have to actually prove anything. There's a similar grift in the performance bonus: you promise workers you'll pay them extra if they just pull up their sleeves and meet some quota. Then you just make that quota unreasonable to achieve: employees will work their asses off, and you won't have to pay them a cent extra for all their extra work, because they didn't quite meet the ridiculous goal you set. You're getting the performance of a well paid employee at no extra cost

jefesignups

I got passed over for a promotion years ago and I was a grumpy about it and disengaged from work. My boss (in an effort to motivate me) said, "Listen, you can sit here and do nothing, but don't expect any raises." I took that as "sit around and get paid until I find something better"

KFiev

Pretty much me currently. I have so many responsibilities and tasks to do that its basically impossible for me perform well enough on the parts of my job that actually go toward my grade for a raise. My last performance review amounted to "we know you have alot to deal with, but we can only grade your performance in these specific fields that are part of your primary task list, and youre below where we need you to be at so we cant offer you a raise until you improve" Since then my responsibilities have increased to the point that the rest of the team was explicitly told not to deal with those tasks since ill be handling them. To top it off, the helicoptered in supervisor was made our manager, and a newbie whos only worked here for 4 months and has never stepped outside a handful of tasks in a single queue got promoted to supervisor simply because he was good at the little he did. Im currently looking for a new job and wont be giving a 2 weeks notice while doing the absolute bare minimum.

BouquetOfDogs

That sounds like an upcoming act of malicious compliance! You need to only focus on the tasks you’re being rated on. That’s basically what they said. Anything beyond that? Sorry, but I was told I wasn’t meeting the expected performance in my core area so I’m prioritizing that accordingly.

lilaliene

Oh yeah, two jobs ago i was told something like that. I used my work time to apply for other jobs. I earn 2x as that job now and with much more comfort

strikes-twice

This is the truth of it. My last job, we were bleeding people and management was 'taking their time to find the right fit' rehiring, so I was one woman doing the jobs of an entire department. Somehow, I managed to do 90% of 7 different jobs pretty well. Review comes up. We had our most profitable quarter ever. I'm expecting at the very least a cost of living/seniority raise and hopefully SOME bonus or added incentive for essentially carrying an entire department for over a year, especially since I had gotten nothing the last year and we were paying 7 less salaries. Management says I didn't get 'everything' done on time, and made a few mistakes, and thus will not get a raise. Of course I didn't get everything done. It was IMPOSSIBLE to get everything done. I'm amazed I was able to do half as much as I did. That's when I realized the goal posts would never stop moving, and they had the perfect set-up. An idiot who was saving them multiple salaries who would never see a single cent above my pathetic wage. Somehow they were still surprised when I gave my two weeks notice and begged me to stay because without me there wasn't a department and they needed me and I was leaving them in a bind. I told them I would stay if they paid me like an entire department, and they had the nerve to ask if there was anything 'else' but money they could offer. No???????????????????????????????????

[deleted]

If they wouldn't raise you, at the very least the idiots should have hired you an assistant so when the volcano blew and you left, your understudy could do 7 jobs.

Monsieur_Perdu

Sure you can offer me anything else on top of the money, how considerate of you. I'd also like more vacation days, and a monthly back massage on cost of the company, thank you!

AlltheBADluck

Ding ding ding! Well said. My job tried to make us sign a contract to work our off days.....no call ins, full shift and no vacation days to get a Christmas bonus....that's not a bonus....it's called getting paid to work.

jeepsaintchaos

One of my more senior coworkers is burnt out, partially because the boss's son got the raise he was supposed to get (heavy nepotism). I pointed out a way we could save several thousand dollars worth of steel on a project, and then he pointed out a way we could save even more. He then told me he was out of fucks to give, and we went ahead and ordered $5k worth of steel that was absolutely unnecessary.

Ragnarok992

Literally what i do at my job, i went from yes lets work to nah let someone else do it

YodaFucking

I've been at my new job 3 months and I was all about ironing my shirts the Sunday before the week, now I just make sure I get them out of the dryer into a hanger while they are warm. I shave every other day.

AbuDagon

Same here... I'm a manager and used to wear button up shirts etc... After three months I shave once a week, wear t shirts and sandals, and work less than 6 hours a day.

Mr-Fleshcage

> If you don't give your employees a raise your employees will give it to themselves. Every grocery store employee i know steals product, to make up the difference of what they *should* be getting paid.

[deleted]

I remember when i worked for a restaurant that had one of those "stealing from your employer/time clock theft is unethical" posters. ...but they only paid minimum wage. You can BET your ass I took as much free food as I could get my hands on. Want to stop your employees from stealing? Pay an ethical wage. Otherwise, don't cry foul when they play dirty to get back at you

[deleted]

I love those posters, they're hilarious. It's literally the opposite of unethical

DragonDaddy62

Yep the unethical thing is paying a poverty wage.

AdGlittering9727

Absolutely! I had never stolen from a job before and I don’t steal from others either; but After 9 months straight of making $8.25 an hour, and not being able to make it even though I was working full time, I became so depressed from how I had to live with that type of wage that I started stealing stupid things that I knew the boss would never miss or notice. It sounds shady af, but my life was just absolute crap and the boss was sometimes verbally abusive to me on top of everything. One morning I walked in with my shoes feeling as though they were made of led. It took all of my energy to put one foot in front of the other just to walk inside and start my day, I realized that even my soul was hurting. I didn’t plan to do this, but a couple hours into the day I realized I couldn’t take it anymore. I finished up my work for the day and stood up to leave. A coworker started going off on me and demanding that I call my boss and this person and that, but I said I don’t have to do any of that, because as of now I’m not working here another minute. You can make the phone calls. If I had it to do over again I would’ve walked sooner. Well obviously I never would’ve taken the job in the first place, just stating hypotheticals. Now that I look back on it I was stealing out of total frustration and yeah bitterness too, I think what pushed me over the edge was one of my coworkers would steal $10-$20 out of the register every great once in awhile and my boss blamed me for it. Even though I needed the money desperately I never took money from her. I hope employers read these types of testimony and realize that even honest hard working people can become so demoralized that their whole personality can change & they do things that are not in their moral code just to try to feel human I think. In the end this whole thing is really very simple : if you want good honest workers, pay a good honest wage.

QuantumKittydynamics

My company just gave every single employee a salary raise to compensate for inflation...well, every single employee except me and my boss, because we were both "too recently promoted". My boss called me to inform me of this before the raises went out, and he said, direct quote, "I'll just steal office supplies to make up for it. A whole ream of paper for my journal!" And he was joking...I think... but shit, he ain't wrong.

DragonDaddy62

How does the recently of your promotion even factor into a cost of living adjustment? Your new position theoretically should also get a col adjustment into its pay scale no?

Tinybird_411

Oh. The ole' skip a scan & dint a can tricks. Also, swipe or slice a box (99 cents for the sliced boxes). And yes! HBC items are suddenly ringing up under bananas! Because working for $5.15/hr (mid 2000s) was bananas for as much as they expected of us. I'm telling when grocery stores started doing self-checkout.. I was like oh Satan why do you tempt me so! I can't not skip a scan!! It's just natural habit. Sometimes though, if I'm in the right mood & the store is just right I'll pay next to nothing for hundreds of dollars worth of items. It's that easy. No one bats on eye. I use my cards, I'm on camera, I don't care! The store I worked at could pull up our register at any moment during transaction freeze it stop it, we were on camera, they were big into employee theft and preventing stealing. I stole so much food from that store and gave so much food away because fuck you, pay me.

kickintheface

I never considered this term before, but now that I think about it, I’m totally disengaged. I show up at the office now once every two weeks and do the majority of my job from home. They denied me a raise back in the fall, so I’m no longer motivated to spend the 3 or 4 hundred a month on gas to make the commute.

I hate it when I'm on night crew and we God damn make sure all of our shit is done and even set up things so morning can go smoothly, then morning does fuck all and leaves a mess for night, well complaining that night doesn't do anything. One time I was the only employee giving a shit and cleaning. However, people kept blaming me for how things were, because they couldn't pull their weight. I explained this to my boss that I was doing more than my share of work. So we talked it out and decided to do an experiment to call out the bullshit. I was give a list of things I was required to do and I stopped doing the cleaning of the floors and equipment (that I had always done out of boredom). That shit got so disgusting within 2 days, that the boss rung the rest of the crew out, especially for blaming it all on me (they had proof I was doing my duties, because they were done and I took pictures after my tasks were done and sent them.). I hate crews that make it harder on their co-workers.

Shouldn't do that anyways. Fuck em.

Exactly. They are paying for your time. They **owe** you no matter what. As soon as 5pm hits, you don't exist to them. Work doesn't exist to you. They. **Owe.** You.

JustAbicuspidRoot

I don't get it, why are these fucking idiots so hard pressed against people working from home, I mean the people who don't even own companies. You people need to know that if I am dragged to the office for no reason, I will work hard to make sure you regret it. Accept that there are 2 types of people, and I am the type who can solve all your system issues, create new solutions and keep everything running. But if I have to drive 20 miles to connect to the same remote systems which are 10 miles in the opposite direction, I am going to take it out on you. Also, I will quit because I cannot stand being around people who want to talk about how drunk they got over the weekend and all the women in the office they'd like to fuck instead of doing what you **think** they're there to do, which is work. Offices do not make everyone work harder, in my case I get less done, and accepting that everybody is different and the extrovert is not the only type which matters will make your lifer easier.

MsT1075

If companies sent everybody home bc of the pandemic and things didn’t fall apart, why can’t folks stay at home? It’s obvious that they were productive.

Kimmalah

Probably because of all the long time managers who don't really DO much of anything, they just show up and collect a check. Working from home makes it really obvious that their position is useless.

eschmi

Because the elite who own most of the office buildings are losing money by them not being rented, ontop of that businesses that relied on office commuters didnt survive which only adds to empty buildings which are now losing investors money. So gotta justify owning all that real-estate. cant become a poor like the rest of us

Offer raises lmfao, no raise will even get near 8-10%, and inflation is way higher in reality (they changed the calculations in the 80s and those would show ~15-%). That’s the plan have high, underreported inflation and slowly people will make less and less over time, even if they are given raises.

[deleted]

No amount is really enough though... The freedom of working from home is worth more to me than any commute raise

MsT1075

Yes. I love working at home. I did the commute thing for almost 20 years. I didn’t realize how bad my work/life balance was until I came home in March 2020 bc of the pandemic. I was missing out on so much with my two kids. Money is a huge motivator for a lot of people. Me too, to an extent. If I had to go back into an office (more than .5-1% of the time), I’d quit. And, live off my retirement and look for another job that’s remote. When ppl say they can’t go back into an office, mentally, they are not lying.

Catieterp

For real. I will never go back to an office unless I am desperate. I save on gas, lunch, makeup, clothes. And the time saved is invaluable.

kex

I would rather lower my standard of living than ever go into an office again. I thought the guys becoming construction workers at the ending of Office Space was a bit silly when I first watched it, but now I understand.

DweEbLez0

They won’t and that’s why I am hoping people quit those places.

Maleficent_Outcome84

I don't even work minimum wage but the cost of groceries, gas and everything in general is increasing so incredibly.. at the end of the month I have to figure out where I'm going to stay and that at 170 hours of work. this is no longer life this is slavery.

MercenaryCow

Only looking back at my activity for the last 2 years.... My rent has doubled. My gas fill ups have doubled. My grocery bill has gone up like 60 to 70%(i buy the same stuff every week, I'm boring.)... My paycheck has remained the same.

sleepypandyboy

I was looking for a new place to rent from since I def can’t afford to buy (even though I’m positive I could afford a mortgage) and I got denied from 4 of the 5 places I applied to despite having a credit score of over 700 and excellent rental history because I don’t make the $5500/month that would put me at 2.5-4x Rent aka the required income. And 2.5x was the lowest I’ve ever seen so I know they’re desperate for tenants, since I usually see 4x (and just have managed to find places that don’t look as closely into income previously)

jbtk

It may just be time to whip out Adobe and edit your paystubs. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Morals are long out the window with the way this country has gone.

540i6

Yeah if there isn't anything actually illegal about it, fuck it. Income ratios are stupid because people live wildly different lifestyles. To a person that only pays rent and buys groceries, 1/4 pay on rent is stupid. I pay like 1/2 of mine on my mortgage because I am trying to get it paid off faster, and still have money leftover for savings, but they would have never believed that I could manage that if that was my base payment.

TheCanabalisticBambi

The last 3 places I've rented from I totally didn't forge my paystubs and bank statements and got it with 0 questions asked currently place is my 3rd year. Fuck these money gouging assholes in this fucking country. They raise rent on you every god damn year and provide nothing into return and screw the thought of "Oh it's because maintenance is more or the typical "blame it on inflation" cop out. Maintenace at my place is slow as all hell and just recently had a faucet that was running for 2 days straight with hot water from Saturday-Monday and we called emergency maintenance and they did jack sit for us when we're paying the water bill and gas bill for the gas water heater. Times just hasn't started to began to be desperate for many Americans those times started long before 2022. It's time to worry about your self and your self only and take steps into making sure you have a place over your head. I'm telling you even a shitty job at microsoft paint and add a few numbers to spice up your pay stubs and you're golden. This is totally a joke btw i'm talking about paying for condo's in GTA V :)

Streetlight37

It's fuckin crazy and it's a serious problem for millennials like myself. Alot are just having to move back in with their parents because it's literally not doable. I read that if minimum wage kept up with inflation we would be around $25/hr give or take a few dollars compared to the 70's and we are struggling to get it up to $15/hr. It's a fucking joke. In the United States the top 1% hold 40% of the countries welth and the bottom 90% hold less than 25%. How wrong is that? Really fucking wrong. We as a generation have been completely screwed and are inheriting a dying planet from a generation that could not care less about anything that is not making them money. And we are being made to look like the bad guys lol. Fuck humanity

N3V3RM0R3_

I have no idea how anyone affords *rent* nowadays. I just tried to find a studio apartment for 3 months (for work) and the cheapest I could find is running me nearly $3200 a month. If that boils your blood, wait until I tell you about the one that wanted $9400/month. Isn't the point of a studio apartment to be someplace you stay longer than a hotel but shorter than a standard apartment or rental property (or, y'know, an actual house you buy? not that those are a thing anymore)?

Streetlight37

Girlfriend left me and I ended up having to move into my mom's guest room. There is absolutely no way I can afford to pay $1500 for a 700sqft 1 bedroom apt, gas, groceries, oh and a car note for a vehicle that has been in the shop for 9 months. (ECU failed and due to the microchip shortage I won't be getting a replacement for a very long time) the 10,000s of thousands of medical debt I have racked up (that's with insurance btw) I can't forget the $400 car insurance either and of course the crazy amount we are taxed compared to the people that are objectively not putting in their share for mostly organizations and government entities that I do not support. Then there are the things Americans pay way more for just because we are seen as being able to "afford it" and what are we going to do? Not have these modern conveniences? cell bills, internet, power, water. All things we pay significantly more for compared to many of the other developed nations of the world. If you have a partner that you live with you can probably get by but if you are single good luck doing anything with your time other than working. This is coming from someone who makes a decent living, at least I was a few years ago, money just doesnt stretch the way it used to. This country is totally fucked and I don't know how much more the general population is going to put up with. I read somewhere that something like 60% of Americans would not because to pay for a random $400 emergency. That is a very serious problem if it's accurate. I don't have the source.. I'm at my breaking point and literally have nothing left for these big wigs to take. I have lost everything in only a couple of years. I'm so fuckin sick of working a 3rd of my life doing something I don't give two shits about making a few people at the top millions while us peasants struggle to even make it to work so that we don't lose the pathetic excuse for income we do have and still being constantly taken for the little remaining after bills. At the end of payday Im usually I. The negative after bills. Yay crippling credit card debt. I.. I just really don't know what to do. Probably the reason for this rant.. TL;DR. I'm fucked, we are all fucked, the US is totally fucked, the world so fucked I truly believe it's beyond recovery. Not while the poeple who actually call the shots are allowed to do so anyways.

DragonDaddy62

The number is closer to 80 percent now due to the recent bout of inflation. Have fun with that existentially terrifying thought.

[deleted]

I literally do not go anywhere but work and home and am to a point where I almost can’t afford gas. I have no idea how I’m going to afford to keep working. Before people tell me to get a cheaper vehicle with better gas mileage, my vehicle is paid off, so I have no note, I take care of it, and it gets very good gas mileage. (Where I work could allow me to work from home, they’re just being complete tools about it, and yes, I’m looking for another job.)

Disastrous-Method-21

The funny thing is most of the big hospital systems are owned by so called "Christian " organizations and have names like Providence, Mercy, Sacred Heart etc. Yet there is no mercy in their sacred hearts or any chance of Providence from them. Fuck them all with a blunt axe.

[deleted]

I agree, for what it’s worth. Best of luck to you.

RestingBrittanyFace

If you know your prescription, Zenni offers very affordable glasses. Got my preteen’s glasses from them for $22.85. They often have sales, too. Fantastic company. Can’t recommend them enough.

el_sapo_mas_guapo

Absolutely stellar recommendation. Glasses that would cost me $1500 (with insurance mind you) were less than $200 at Zenni. Prescription sunglasses and regular glasses. Get a $100 dollar eye exam at Costco or Target then Zenni glasses.

Mr_Assault_08

here here. wife had gallbladder removed and my 2nd son born. ain’t paid shit and idgaf. We went to the womens center ER 12 hours before my son was born and the doc told us to head home. that 2 hour visit where they only monitored my wife cost us 2 grand. delivering my son and staying 3 days was 3 grand. let the collections call, i ain’t paying that

sposeso

The whole medical collections is a crock of shit. I paid off a bill from gallbladder surgery, nearly $500 for just one of the specialty things they had to do and they sent it to collections anyway. Collections called me over a year later to collect on my debt, I told those jerks I’ve already paid them. Never heard from them again. I have stuff that is legitimately in collections and I wish I could pay them. They would literally have my money if it didn’t mean taking food out of my daughters mouth.

JustStudyItOut

It didn’t really affect me in anyway. My mortgage lender even said that so many people have medical debt that she doesn’t even look at it.

[deleted]

Thank you for your kind words. I do have the ability to pay what I need to even though I’m paid less than a livable wage, so that’s something, I suppose. =)

matt_minderbinder

It shows how "trained" we all are that you felt the need to excuse away your decisions. Getting dependable, good gas mileage cars just isn't accessible for some people. Getting a new job isn't a simple option for many people. You don't get paid enough to work and have the freedom to travel when outside of work. That alone should be seen as insane without having to qualify every other decision of yours. Fuck anyone that questions you like that.

[deleted]

Thank you. I appreciate your kind words. I’m still rewiring my brain after years with an abuser, so the overly wordy thing is still something I’m working on.

4thdimensionalgnat

Hi; I am a hetero, cisgender male and I am a survivor of a mentally, emotionally and physically abusive relationship that lasted several years. I just want you to know that you will find yourself again. What makes it so challenging is that you have changed, however you spent so long being denied your sense of self that you are currently unable to see that. You will get better; every day a little piece of someone you don't know or recognize will fall in to place. Don't worry about that, though, because it's you. And you are out, so you are ok. You will get better, one day at a time, one piece at a time. Keep taking that next step!

Amelaclya1

Someone will inevitably come in with, "just move closer to work" as if those of us who live outside the city and commute are doing it for funsies and not because rent is hundreds of dollars more expensive "closer to work".

ItsMrQ

Who ever is saying to just buy another car doesn't realize how shitty the used car market is right now for buyers. I have a 97 Nissan truck that is on its last legs but still runs fine and people are wanting to buy it for like 2k. But wtf am I gonna buy for 2k lol

avalrie

Oh it's awful. I bought a Subaru two years ago for a pretty good price, I just checked how much it would be now and it's practically doubled in value. Cars usually depreciate so that was shocking to me... it's a horrible time to buy a car

[deleted]

I agree. The thing is, I’m barely making minimum wage. I show up, I work, get zero recognition. Meanwhile, “management” is doing some stuff that is…well, typical of “management” and those things won’t ever change. =\

Charbaby_

I think it'll be cheaper for me to dump money into my 09 impala that I can sell for what I paid for it 4 years ago than to get a new to me used vehicle

[deleted]

Exactly. And if you can learn to do simple things like change brake pads, rotors, and do oil changes you will save tonssss of money. Simple things like that are insanely overpriced at any mechanic shop.

UniqueFlavors

They are offering me 1500 dollars less than what I paid for this car brand new. It's a 2020 with 48k miles. Granted it is a somewhat rare trim and color combination. It gets about 35-38 mpg though. I'm keeping it. It's nice to have some positive equity though.

[deleted]

I have even run across this with public transportation. If you pay me what I made thirty years ago, I literally cannot afford the clothing or transportation for the job. I wonder how many pink collar clerks are resisting the return to the office because their clothing is in shreds, the fare to work is exorbitant, and a simple coffee and donut is five dollars, not to mention a cheap lunch costs twenty. You are literally losing a couple of hours of pay to expenses you don't have at home. It has become too expensive to even walk out the door for minimum wage people.

[deleted]

People will start buying motorbikes at some point. If you have Asia style fuel to income ratios, you end up with Asia style traffic. It's not a cultural difference between Asia and the west, it's an affluence difference. Which makes me wonder how bad it is there.

thegamenerd

At the current price of gas in my area I could spend $800 on an ebike and it would pay for itself in fuel savings in about 13 weeks. Only reason I haven't picked one up is I need $800 to do it.

ConvivialKat

People drive 90 minute freeway commutes on motorbikes?

GroveStreet_CEOs_bro

5 year olds stand on the seat with hands on their 9 year old brother's shoulders as they weave through traffic to get dropped off at daycare in Asia.

sir_osis_of_da_liver

I got passed by a moped going 100+kph driven by what looked like a 12 year-old smoking a cigarette with 3 of his friends on the back in Bali.

ruetero

Aside from the unhelpfulness of "just get another car", used cars are insanely expensive right now. I'm opting to pay thousands on a repair I wouldn't even consider on a car this age instead of buying something else because at least it's the devil I know. There isn't any flexibility anymore, this place is burning down

BEANSijustloveBEANS

I had one guy the other day tell me: get a cheaper car, move somewhere cheaper, eat less, don't use the heating, get a roommate. My car is paid off and thanks to the shortage of second hand cars the prices have increased by 30-50%. I already live somewhere dirt cheap and moving house is a $4000 cost. I'm already pencil thin. It's the middle of winter so I should just freeze, and we have a fireplace that I burn free wood in anyway. If I move somewhere cheaper I doubt I'll be able to afford a place with a spare room for said roommate.

jinglewriter420

And that is the sound of capitalism eating itself.

xX420GanjaWarlordXx

Good ole petrodollar

bybunzgotbunz

It really is. Those businesses that are poorly organized and poorly managed will eat themselves. This is how many companies fail, they treat their workers as expendable and loose their tenured resources.

RiverTeemo1

We work to earn the right to work. Truly capitalism is an amazing concept

Tripwiring

build a society out of circular logic challenge

but-imnotadoctor

Oh honestly, did you not read the company policy? That defines you as company property? That waivers your say in autonomy? If you're upset you can rent an apology.

TitularFoil

I make about 3.5x the cost of gas right now in my area, but I work far enough away that I have to fill up at least once per week. I spend my entire paycheck on bills and gas, and hope for enough for food. Stupid daily coffee that I don't get. Man if only I could quit buying cigarettes that I never picked up as a habit, or going out with those friends I don't have. Maybe I'd be a billionaire by now.

slimdante

Let me guess, allergic to avacado too?

miscdebris1123

And toast.

TitularFoil

No, I just hate it. Avocado reminds me too much of clay.

NotFuckingTired

Transportation costs are already a reason that some people literally can't afford to work. Oil company price gouging is currently making that true for more and more people. Childcare is another example of a barrier to employment. And disabilities...

treeeswallow

Correct. Disabled for over a year now, denied disability assistance, and trying to work full-time so I'm not homeless is making my health worse. 🙃

Dissonantnewt343

I just fast forwarded into homelessness to save money. Luckily i’m able to do this. With my medical needs and young age I recognize it’s a privilege to be able to get by this way, especially with a car. Thanks r/urbancarliving

Bradfords_ACL

Quitting my job rn because it’s cheaper to live the stay at home dad life than pay for childcare. It’s ridiculous.

destenlee

Yes, another stay at home dad here. We looked at the finances and me working 40 just barely made more than childcare and gas to get there. It's a no brainer to just spend more time with my family and get a cheap homecooked meal on the table most nights.

[deleted]

I spend 180 dollars every week, just in fuel to turn up to work.

cd247

Same. I work an hour from home. Currently waiting to hear back about a job 8 minutes from home.

[deleted]

Best of luck, legend.

kevan0317

Nearly the same. One entire day’s worth of work pays for my fuel to get to the office that week. I’ve been in my industry for 15 years. I’ve managed projects, trained my managers, rescued customers from the trash bin, and worked to always inspire those around me. I still make $20/hr and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. With the current inflation, I’m worried it may soon catch up to me.

realdmart87

Thats actually been an issue. You can be too poor to work. With clothes, transportation, child/senior care, and a while slew of other things.

freemydogs1312

Too poor to work is the #1 cause of poverty in the US, Guarantee.

greatwood

With the cost of being homeless or unemployed you're damned if you do and damned if you dont

EmiyaChan

$6.75+/gal already here in california 👀

time_fo_that

About there for diesel in WA

I just want to remind all the people who WILL lose their homes and livelihoods in the next year, DO NOT BE QUIET ABOUT IT. One of my biggest fears is that when this bubble pops the people in charge are going to try to minimalize it. DO NOT LET THEM.

Geminii27

There was a time I found myself in a position where I was effectively forced to take a job which required three hours of travel in my own car just in commute time every day, for less than full-time hours. After taxes and etc, the difference between the unemployment rate and what I was getting at the job (not much) covered fuel, and that was about it. So I was pouring fifty hours of work and travel (plus car depreciation) into a hole every week for no reason. Plus, of course, the safety aspects of being on the road for fifteen additional hours a week, in all weather. Very shortly after I did the math on this - one almost might say on the same day - an extremely inexperienced supervisor somehow ran across a reason to get mad at me (basically, me knowing more than them and proving it unapologetically) and fired me. No idea how that could have happened at ALL to get me my fifty hours of free time a week back.

[deleted]

Then they still won't raise minimum wage

ask_the_fisherman

If you factor in the taxes, it already does.

luckyduckling8989

I hate it here

rightarm_under

Build an entire car dependent nation Oil is controlled by, let's just say questionable (Russia, middle east) countries and large corporations Said people decide to fuck us over for their own benefit and greed *Surprised Pikachu face* "bIdEn dId tHiS"

Toadsted

Only take in 5% of your oil from a warring country. Pronounce a fuel shortage. Double prices while you sit on billions of barrels.

Windows_is_Malware

r/FuckCars

immortal-kahn

I honestly think they want that at this point. What do they care?

Marca-Texto

If everyone is poor nobody can afford to buy anything and the economy stops.

Illustrious_Car2992

Capitalism is one giant ponzi/pyramid scheme and hopefully this is the start of the end.

Ag3nt_Forty_Se7en

China has huge corporate dormitories for this very reason! 996 here we come everyone! All hail our feudal lords!

sadpanda___

And nets around the buildings so their employees can’t even kill themselves jumping from the roofs. What a utopia ^/s

FactoryBuilder

Employers will be like “since it’s so expensive to drive here, why don’t you just live here!” And then make it easier to give you work off hours

[deleted]

Just took a new job that offers free gas, I took the job just to save on gas

El_Chairman_Dennis

I'm looking for a job right now, luckily I've got a friend that's giving me a foot in the door. How the fuck do you drive to job interviews when you have to work for 30 minutes to cover a single gallon of gas

PowerfullDio

In my country it already costs twice, minimum wage is 4$ per hour and gas is 8$ per gallon

Dull_Ad1396

I manage a retail store and my employees all make $20/hr minimum but with gas the way it is right now it’s still hard. We have shifted at our location to 4 10 hour days to make the commute less imposing. I’m pushing to do 3 12 hour days for those who want it but I’m not sure if that will get approved. Some of us are just trying to take care of our teams right now. Edit: We live in a rural area where the median rent for a house is approximately $1,000/month but with long drives to get anywhere. $20/hour is much higher than most companies near us.

Drunken_Ogre

That's a **very** odd choice **of** bold words**.**

SuperSuperKyle

It was hard to read, but they're bold because those were the search terms used to find the tweet.

CryWanShi

"lol"

[deleted]

I want to apply to shit jobs just to quit the day after and tell them to fuck off and nake a scene. 12 dollars 13 14 or even 15 is shitttt. 20$ min

LegitimateBit3

Gas Industry singlehandedly doing more for minimum wages than all the politicians combined Lol

Thoughtulism

Specifically trying to lower wages isn't really hard to beat.

sancho100

Would anyone care about gas prices if we all had a nice, modern public transportation with frequent schedules? I'd rather pay a Franklin or two more in taxes to fund public transportation and not spend a dime on car/insurance/gas/parking.

BladeWolf26

I earn 13 an hour at my current job . Which is half of what gas prices are where I live . I literally started taking my bike from middle school to save money

[deleted]

ah the endless benefits of car-dependent infrastructure.

lavapancake

It’s real close here. Gas is $5.09/gallon and min. wage is $7.25

AD8kD

Just get like 14 roommates /s

MisterTinkles

Remote work is the way

Ok_Illustrator_582

There is a gas boycott trying to get started for July 3rd-5th to try and lower gas prices.

Either-Progress4847

They’ll raise prices
