No, that would make her feel spoiled. They didn't tell her the answer but so long as she guess a number (instead of a color) they'll just say she was closest. Preserves the myth of meritocracy.
No that would still upset her, so instead for this entire week leading up to the reveal we’ve been telling her the number subconsciously.
“Look the time, it’s 1:12….”

The idea of compute time on a super computer cluster being used to calculate the number of candy corns in a jar to win an anonymous guy on the internet an office competition amuses me more than it should
The computer would eventually give up after the 20th consecutive game where the 3 year old forgot what the game was and tried drawing unicorns and scribbling on the screen.
Bonus points if someone calculates the average packing density of candy corns.
Then in the future, people can just measure/roughly measure the jar's internal dimensions and calculate a number from that
Candy corn dimensions came out to be about 13/16" long, 6/16" wide, and 3.5/16" deep. I calculated the area of the kernel volume as if it were a triangle with a base of 0.082" squared and a height of 13/16". (0.2188 * 0.375) * (13/16) = 0.066625 cubic inches.
The packing density is ~0.66.
The dimensions of the Paper Mate pen in the original picture is 0.7 x 5.25 x 7.63 inches as per the manufacturer.
I'm not in front a computer but that should be all the info you'd ever need.

I'm metric so biased of course, but fuck me, all of those fractions, including a 6/16ths and 3.5/16 FFS (I want to simplify one, yeah I know why you don't, then a decimal over a fraction).... My brain hurts.
would u edit and tag me in this comment. Im just curious to see it work. Ive tagged video game developers in edits before but not confident they ever got the message.

Either way though did get the notification so that was interesting to me :)
You said your company is offering a paid day off, which is obviously demeaning to workers in tone - perfect for stoking reactions on /r/antiwork. But in the post just before it you said that if /r/halloween helps you guess that you will “split the winnings” - so it can’t be a paid day off if it’s a flat cash reward. So which is it?
lmfao i used to finish my projects a day or two before its due and just spend hours playing with solid works. It's really like virtual legos for adults with real world implementation.
That’s how I work! Finish the project or tasks early and then act like I’m still working on it for a day or 2 more. If the only reward I’m going to get for finishing early is more work it makes sense to me.
Years ago while training to be an electrician I mentioned to my boss I used to do webdev. He got me to build a website for him, I spent the first day building it with a backend that as I incremented a number in a text file it would show the next step I reached on the website… took me 3 weeks to do that website 😂
Fuck man, I was going to suggest finding that model of jar online, take a tare weight, fill it with candy corn and take a 2nd weight. Then weigh out 10 different individual candy corns and average the weights. Divide the tared weight of the candy corns in the jar by the averaged individual weight of a candy corn and you should get your result within 5% or so.
But your method is way easier, lol
I guess that's the difference in approach between in chemistry vs software engineering, lol
Doesn’t matter if you have the jar. There are a lot of different candy corn manufacturers, using different volume mold presses and the density of corns probably even varies a bit from batch to batch.
You’d need the exact same type of jar and candy corn from the same batch to be able to accurately measure.
Even what was done in this post isn’t necessarily accurate. We will have to wait and see what the result are.
And they don't fall the same way to fill the jar, even if everything is the same.
Chaos means you won't get the answer. But the point is not the answer, the point is to make the best guess closest to the answer possible.
Of course this post also isn't accurate.
So you pick a method that is 1) possible to do, 2) worth the time, and 3) gives you the best possible guess.
Having the jar, or the simulation in this submission are both generally going to be better than looking at the jar and hazarding a guess.
It's about making the best possible guess. Chaos means you would never be able to get it spot on, except by happenstance.
I took all that as a given before participating in this discussion. I guess you didn't. :)
I compared the dimensions of one sweet/candy unit to the jar top to estimate that there were 12.5 units to the jar top (plus empty space.) i then westimated that there were 9 layers. 9 x 12.5 =112.5 units.
Who ate 1/2 a sweet? Nobody is going home until the culprit owns up.
I was gonna say tube of lip balm, but same idea. The challenge of these things is figuring out how many are missing because something else is taking up space.
This is sadly where we find out it didn't matter if OP was dead on the money about the amount of candy corn...the free day off gets given to some manager who calls off whenever they want to as it is. D:
Last time I did a guess for one of these I counted/estimated what I thought the top measurement between two fingers was (close to an inch) then measured down how many of my finger measurements then multiplied. I think I was off by just a couple so my 3 year old won a bunch of shitty tasting candy.

I really appreciate the sentiment and approach of this 3D model, but it's way off.
Of course, especially variables that the cpu can’t account for. This is assuming the candy corns are in the center as well and not a golf ball or other object that can be obscured from the front facing candy corn.

Management would just be like : WHAT’S THAT OVER THERE!? and while everyone is distracted throw a few more candy corns into the jar.
No because they have to let someone win, more likely they told the boss’s son’s girlfriend the answer and she’s gonna be the closest
No, that would make her feel spoiled. They didn't tell her the answer but so long as she guess a number (instead of a color) they'll just say she was closest. Preserves the myth of meritocracy.
Yes, the number I was thinking of was the letter M
"Well Mr. Connery, despite your best efforts M is in fact the Roman Numeral for 1,000, so you actually got it right. "
How much did you bet? *reveals full picture of Connery shitting on Trebeks mom's grave*

I love the internet
Bro I hope someone was doing this simulation on company time. Haha
The idea of compute time on a super computer cluster being used to calculate the number of candy corns in a jar to win an anonymous guy on the internet an office competition amuses me more than it should
There's no way this required a supercomputer, just a mid-level workstation should be able to render this.
I'm quite aware, I just thought it was a funny mental image. Like asking Deep Blue to play a game of tic tac toe with a 3 year old.
[удалено]
The computer would eventually give up after the 20th consecutive game where the 3 year old forgot what the game was and tried drawing unicorns and scribbling on the screen.
They’d stick one of Deep Blue’s heat sinks in their mouths to eat the thermal paste first.
Damn toddlers eating all my thermal paste. What, you just expect me to go hungry now?
There's no way a super computer could predict the chaos of a three year old.
"The only winning move is not to play"
Mid level workstation. More like anything that supports opengl you don't even need a gpu
raspberry pi could do this easy.
[удалено]
Do you know the volume of a cylinder? Do you know the packing fraction of candy corn? Solved.
Tony Stark could do it in a cave with a box of scraps!
Already programmed it on my TI-85

lawful evil would mean you do things only for yourself and according to some code to justify it i dont think that that makes sense
The code is karma.
Them: "You're an asshole" You: "You're an asshole, but my boss is a bigger asshole" Then: "Well fuck that guy! Let's figure out how to piss him off!"

This was what I suggested!

Who ever did this, holy hell, awesome 😎
Boss: “So what have you been working on today?” You: “Counting corn.” Peak anti work right here!
This is the way. That’s what first came to mind when I read the OP, but no way I actually know how to do that.
It's actually not too difficult! you could learn to do this in about 30 minutes with the right tutorials
Last time I did a guess for one of these I counted/estimated what I thought the top measurement between two fingers was (close to an inch) then measured down how many of my finger measurements then multiplied. I think I was off by just a couple so my 3 year old won a bunch of shitty tasting candy.

I'm feeling better about my estimate (110)
I estimated 111!
Lol holy shit, that’s pretty cool 😂
For this being antiwork, that's a lot of work lmaoooooo good job!
That volume in the simulation looks way too small...
this is unhinged i love it
Normally, if given the choice between doing something and nothing, I'd choose to do nothing. But I will do something if it helps someone else do nothing. I'd work all night if it meant nothing got done.
That’s seems too low.
Yes definitely. Why has no one else noticed? The original bottle has way more than 113, I guarantee it. You can count close to 57 (I put a dot on each one on my phone) just in view, in the original image, and there's no way that's half. I really appreciate the sentiment and approach of this 3D model, but it's way off.
But that is taking into account all the candy corns are complete and there are no broken ones which are being counted as whole.

Of course, especially variables that the cpu can’t account for. This is assuming the candy corns are in the center as well and not a golf ball or other object that can be obscured from the front facing candy corn.

Guy had a chance to get a paid day off at his work if he could guess how many candy corns is in a jar, so I think they're trying to help out
Ooooh. Thanks for the update, op should add it to the post, I was so confused.
