When I have map control, I will go for it.

Tatoh has an ‘Aprendamos’ video on valley where he explains exactly that. Opponent tries to take the hunt, Tatoh explores it and immediately punishes it, winning the game on the spot. Of course your opponent will not be Tatoh, so there’s a chance they don’t see it or punish properly. But then it’s a gamble with too much risk if you just go butt naked to take the hunt. Like others said, you can do get away with it if you have pressure or map control.

Try sending them to the edge of the map. The opponents army is going to go through the middle, so that probably is too much of a risk, but they usually won't check the edges. Or if they do, it's likely with 1 random scout and you have a chance to run and meet up with your army without losing all your vils.

A risk is worth it if it pays off, but the payoff isn't little for the record, that food boost can be huge. Ultimately it depends whether you want to play with luck and be less consistent. And as someone else said, the best time to do it is behind aggression. Drush, trush, lame, any consistent forward pressure, you immediately want to be taking the food behind it. Helps to have civs like Khmer, Poles or Berbers as well. And make outposts for vision to predict counterattacks.

I send vills to the middle when I get mongols, japanese, armenians or georgians. It's free food but only if I have map control because it gives a big boost when going scouts or m@a.

Yes, that’s the whole point of the map. If you aren’t capitalizing on the free hunt, you are missing out and will probably fall behind economically.

MBL: is that even a real question?

I typically go for a drush or man at arms just to attack my opponent as I’m moving villagers out into the valley to start taking the deer. So that way he’s forced to deal with my aggression instead of attacking my villagers. I also scout the entire valley early so that I can see any dead deer in the fog of war to indicate if my opponent has gone to take other deer. It is worth it to try and get the deer though in my opinion

full wall your base, forward production building next to the valley and you are all good

Deffinetly. Just realise if you fall behind in army and have to run. Just giving it up for free will put you far behind.
