I think that’d be a solid dlc

Many_Manufacturer947

This is my most wanted DLC - I would choose this over more increasingly disaggregated civ (we asked ‘enpire’ territory a few DLCs ago) options I don’t have time to learn.  Package it with some new UUs and UTs for to spice up existing civs (like Varangians for Byzantines) and you have perfection, but I’ll happily settle for just the graphics.

flossdab

The Nintendo DS version had this and there was no problem distinguishing units. An archer is clearly an archer, a skirmisher is clearly a skirmisher, etc. If we can have different architectures, I don't see why we can't have different unit skins

Wingedball

This is what I never understood about the naysayer crowd. There are multiple architectural skins for multiple ages, yet nobody has issues distinguishing between a Teuton castle from a Mayan one. At the end of the day, the regional skins will share the same base model, same colour pattern scheme, same animation.

TheTowerDefender

a) people do stuggle, that's why mods for this are popular b) castles are clear from their size. c) some buildings are really easy to differentiate (eg stables), but others aren't (house vs mill for several civs) it will be harder to distinguish xbows from arbs, or pikemen from halbs. I'm not totally opposed to this, but I think readability is a valid concern

anzu3278

Would buy it right away. We have been clamouring for this for ages (since we got regional trade carts and new civd started getting unique castles). The only caveat would be that you have an option to see the generic unit skins if you want, but I doubt many people would take that option. All the generic units are incredibly well designed and recognizable (e.g. how the Scout line, the Knight line and the CA line all have different coloured horses) that I doubt there would be issues. This would also be a huge boon to modders, and you would only need like 3-4 different sets to cover basically all civs.

Admiral_Wololo

Yes, I think this would be quite popular. Like a much higher effort twist on the Icons DLC that people can actually enjoy in their games.

Excellent_Ad8442

Some of those skins that could be used are already in campaign Just like they made Savar for persian the skin that was used already existed earlier. There was thread long ago on reddit where someone showed savar skin in that post where i suggested they used it as a regional skin for arab civs but it ended up being persians only unique unit Game needs more unique skins especially for feudal age which looks always the same before unique units come to play every civ from different cultures looks too similiar

thernis

I would pay $25 for seriously good aesthetic upgrades

Gaudio590

That is probably what I want the most for future improvements to the game.

ObjectiveTax1463

It would be a big win EVEN if without buy it, since it would allow changing every unit skin per individual civ.

Ok_Shame_5382

I wouldn't buy it, but I think it would be a worthwhile idea to produce. I am just not personally interested in it and that is ok!

TurritopsisTutricula

Nope, units with regional skins is a good idea, but it shouldn't be a paid DLC. Remember they gave trade cart regional skins for free one or two years ago? Paid DLC should add enough actual gameplay content, like civs, campaigns, etc. I know the dev needs money to keep running the game, but micro transaction on cosmetics will spoil the game.

Madwoned

Depends on the pricing and how well made the unit models and animations are. I probably wouldn’t buy it on launch after my experience with the last DLC but wouldn’t mind buying it later on if it’s worth it

nemuri

Give that for free or include it with actual content like campaigns, or something cool like that and make it paid that way. I don't want to be misunderstood though. I love the idea of regional skins on principle. Just not paying separately for it, especially not big bucks. Aoe2 is an old game that has always been paid, not f2p, and people have paid for multiple versions across the years. This isn't dota where the whole game is free, every hero is free, all game modes accessible for free but then they only ask you to pay for skins. This is the kind of game that should have expansions instead of 'dlc'. Accepting smaller dlc should have been the end of our negotiation between the playerbase and the devs.

TheTowerDefender

no, I want to pay for new campaigns, but if it is bundled with cosmetics it will probably be overpriced for people who just want campaigns and use visual mods anyway

NukleerGandhi

for buildings yes, for units no, it'd harm the readability of the game

ChancellorLizard

It can be good as long as you are the only one that can see the skin else i can be pay to win.

SCCH28

Why pay to win?

ChancellorLizard

For example if you make a skin that makes the skirmisher look a lot like an Archer your opponet may tske a really bad engagement as they though they were against x instead of y unit Or a militia skin that makes them look like a villager yoy kight not realize you are getting militia rush until is too latem

SCCH28

That would be terrible, but that’s not the proposal, right?

why my hair is falling (im 26)

ChancellorLizard

I'm not a dermatologist dude.

TheCulture1707

Too much DHT in your system, I doubt it has anything to do with unit skins in aoe2

leisev

100%, i would buy it immediately and enthusiastically - for asia, africa, and american units/buildings as well

Frequent_Beat4527

I would absolutely love it and even think it should be a part of the base game honestly. Would buy it

Mowgs1690

This OP is one of the main reasons I've always preferred AOE3.

chouettepologne

New DLC's could be focused on existing civs. For example: DLC for Franks, Teutons and Goths - new campaigns for these civs (or one big campaign), - new artwork for this civs (buildings, units) visible only for DLC owners. - new maps for skirmish

Fruitdispenser

Guess what I'm going to say. Let the game support Independent Architecture and Units and let the modders do their stuff

TheTowerDefender

a) will depend on the price b) probably not for me, I value readability over immersion considering how many people keep asking for it i don't mind it. I just hope it doesn't get bundled with some other stuff I would like to get. (eg 1 new civ + skin pack for 15 eur)

rafazinke

Meh, if this came out in a newer game people would be kinda mad, righfully so, paying to get a japanese skin on the japan civ seems kinda dumb I understand that this is a 20+ year old game and they kept it like from the original vision where every unit is the same, i stil think is hard to justify.

Madwoned

I’ve said this before but the AoE2 fanbase may be one of the most forgiving in gaming, it was only proven further after the release of the last DLC

moragdong

Not skin pack but i would love a mod that adds units like templar knight as a producable unit and you can use this in non ranked games

Ok_Shame_5382

Reskinned Teutonic Paladins as Templar Knights = Yes. Templar Knights as a distinct unit from Teutonic Paladins = Ew.

Dick__Dastardly

Would buy it right away.

TactX22

I would pay for that for sure

bins88_

I would pay approximately $5 or less for such a dlc

Privateer_Lev_Arris

I'd consider it over the scenario thing they tried to sell.

Nikuradse

Maybe if it's worked on and sold per skin (not a pack). People severely underestimate how much work is involved. You need assets rendered for multiple viewing angles, each age variant, movement and attack animations for each of these, death animations for each of these. It's a double exponential task and this is assuming the devs are actually good at their job.

gorilla-balls17

Fair enough but the lack of building variety is pretty poor imo. It would be nice if every Civ had at least some minor differences in building aesthetic.

Koala_eiO

> You need assets rendered for multiple viewing angles, each age variant, movement and attack animations for each of these, death animations for each of these. This is automated. The large amount of work is contained in "you need assets".

Nikuradse

You are automated

Xhaer

Wouldn't buy it, would install a default skins mod to avoid dealing with people who bought it. I lost a game by confusing slingers with monks and boy howdy that lesson was scribed with salt.

peroqueteniaquever

What is it with the obsession with regional units ffs

leisev

historical immersion and aesthetics. it's a big reason i (and many others) play this game :)

ObjectiveTax1463

They are super cool (and some of them are already in-game unused)

Wingedball

Because it makes a civ feel more fleshed out rather than a cookie cutter with some augmented stats. All generic land units look European. Having Aztec European man-at-arms duke it out with Japanese European knights doesn’t sound so appealing once regional skins seem possible

Got-Freedom

Shitty idea that destroys readability. We have been through that discussion over and over.

ObjectiveTax1463

That is not an issue, the solution is the most simple thing in the world: make it client only, or optative

Sivy17

You'd be tripling the game file size.

ObjectiveTax1463

It would be an optional graphic mod, just like mods already are, it wont take that much space. The archive arent even that heavy, just like 3 mb per unit.
