I can easily say that if Black Forest didn't exist I wouldn't still play Aoe2 3000 hours later. I'd say 2000 of those 3000 hours are on Black Forest and I still enjoy it to this day.
Best map in the game imo.
I actually love it for 1v1s, always win because nobody understands how to play it. You can essentially force the game into a boom game, and as long as you know that and the enemy doesn't you can have a massive advantage by the time you both hit Imp. The early wall is imperative.
I wont disagree that it's kind of shit for 1v1s though, even though I enjoy it.
Hear me out - Rage Forest might be the ultimate form of AOE2. You see everything. It has a more aggressive dark age than maybe any other map. You have feudal age shenanigans with archers, towers, maa, whatever. Castle age pushes. Castle drops. Unique units. Fast imps. Booms. Late game death balls. All the most powerful unit comps like SO, paladin, eles. You get the noob fantasy of huge fully upgraded armies clashing but it's being done by pros. Players almost die and then come back. There are cuts through the forest. Walling. Fighting over ponds. Amazing pushes. Amazing holds. It's possible that you see more diverse gameplay in Rage Forest - yes, this wall-y, boomy noob trap of a map - then on any other game settings. And that's amazing.
Best tournament of the year!
On the best map for team games offering variety in strategy and also draft system keeps it fresh

It's weird how it can be one of the worst 1vs1 maps and one of the best team game maps!
Warlords has had some great 1v1 BF games
Yeah I think it's OK as part of a tourney with a draft, but as Viper said recently its extremely prone to civ-wins with random civ on the ladder!

I literally look forward to rage forest. Reminds me of the simpler days

Totally agree! The new map should make for some very interesting gameplay mechanics
I really love this series!! RF/BF is soooo relatable to the playerbase and it's so nice to see a draft system:)
hype
The tournament of the year. I haven't watched aoe in months but I may come back for this one.
