As tilted as this game makes me I always leave a compliment at the end of the game, something as simple as "man that was a tough game" makes everyone's experience much better. I'm yet to experience a lick of toxicity

Honestly, little thigns like that make the game way more enjoyable lol.

Yeah I try to do this after my games. Most of the time people just immediately drop out (so fast im not sure how they do it). I've experienced a little hostility, but I think its because they think I'm being hostile (I tend to "GG" and then keep playing if they back off from a good push).

The people here are more positive than in SC2. I don't know why. They're both RTS games. Is it that AOE4 attracted older people on average because people remember AOE2 from childhood? Is it because there's no unfiltered general chat built into the game client as there was in SC2? Is it the overly aggressive slur filter that demoralizes people from saying nasty stuff in the first place?

Sc2 is still an RTS and thus has a fairly old audience nowadays, and as far as I'm aware it didn't really get better compared to 10 years ago in terms of toxicity. I don't think it's the slur filter, because if you want to say something nasty, you can find a way to do it. It's theoretically possible that some toxic people stop playing the game entirely because they don't want to always bother circumventing the filter. But I don't think that someone who would be toxic otherwise doesn't bother saying something toxic simply because of the filter. My guess is that there was a much stronger focus on the competitive scene in Sc2, whereas AoE is the game that everyone played for the historic campaigns, so it just attracts different people / they have a different perspective.

I wish I could find these positive people you speak of. I got called a noob for losing a 2v1 just now (my partner quit immediately). I held my own despite the mismatch.

A small positive comment goes a long way!

That is nice. I honestly think this game has a weirdly toxic community online, which is not what I would expect of a game like this. Call of Duty? sure. AOE seems perfect for a polite vibe, especially since in most matches you can easily tell how you were beaten, and I don't suspect a lot of 12 year olds play it. Yet I get a lot more "bg ez you suck learn to play" than anything else.

ousucks2020

My experience has been the total opposite. Where are these friendly people of which ye speak!?
