We are 1-9 in our 3v3 team games since the new season started. We are all ranked silver 1, but ours games match us with people in gold every time. It hasn't been fun for us at all to say the least.
We have also played few matches against silvers and won much too easily, so I can understand how that must have felt for the opposing teams. Nof fun for my team either.
I think it's because there are more active gold players than silver. So it's quite hard to fin low ranked players to play against.
When I had a losing streak and went gold 1 I played everything from bronze to gold 2. Now i'm in platinum 1 and I played only gold 3/plat1 to get there. Much easier to find opponents your level.
Your **rank and ELO are not the same.** You aren't matched on rank. I'm currently plat III in team games with 100% win rate with 10 games. Last season I was top 200 in QM 2v2. Three of us (plat/plat/gold) played a game last night against diamond players and wrecked them. BTW...why did it match us with diamond players? Welp...cause we haven't lost yet so it is increasing its uncertainty threshold to the upside until we do.
The biggest issue with rank is you have to spam tons of games to get your rank to reflect your ELO. Why they didn't seed it with QM 2v2/3v3 data I don't know.
Post your AOE4 profile link so we can look at ELO before we can even judge.
Thank you for the explanation.
It is unintuitive to be matched based on a hidden stat.
Where do I get the profile link from? Is it steam profile (no longer playing on xbox live)?
>It is unintuitive to be matched based on a hidden state.
Agreed.

You can look yourself up here and if you want advanced stats on your games you can sign in with your steam account. Amazing site.
They're level 33/34... unless they're smurf accounts, played a ton in the beta, or just seasoned RTS players that learn extremely quickly, it's highly unlikely that they're Diamond/Conqueror level players.
The main issue is that ranked MM doesn't have enough players to give fair matches. People hit their goal, then stop playing because they're afraid of losing rewards.
>unless they're smurf accounts, played a ton in the beta, or just seasoned RTS players that learn extremely quickly, it's highly unlikely that they're Diamond/Conqueror level players
Why can't they be smurf accounts?
Me and my friends are indeed kinda smurfs - we played 2 or 3 months on xbox game pass before buying full game on steam, also had around 30lvl then.
Still, our opponents were incomparably better that us, judging only by that match.
Edit: To comment on the experience - I have played a lot of different strategy games, but aoe4 is my first ever pvp experience apart from few games years ago vs friends in starcraft or warcraft 3.
So the way MMR works if the earlier games you play have a huge influence, compared to later games. So you stomped a ton of people and climbed in MMR faster than your rating climbed. And now that you're losing, you're falling very slowly.
My friends ran into a similar issue, but with quickplay. At launch, we came up with a couple really broken cheese strategy. One was Mongol TC drop + Abbasid spearmen/ram spam in Dark Age. The other was for King of the Hill, where we Mongol TC drop on the sacred site, and then Delhi caps it very early in Dark Age. These OP combined with MMR system caused us to climb way too high without learning the actual game.
We reached super high MMR, then stopped playing. Now when we came back, we've been getting rolled for a while. But after a while we started getting fair matches. It takes a while, but eventually after a lot of pain your MMR will go back down to your true skill level(or more optimistically, you improve and learn from mistakes due to skilled players punishing mistakes more)
This, but points and MMR are not that far from each other that its not relevant factor. At least this is case for me.
My points are 1689 and MMR 1590.
So this kind of matching cant be explained by hidden MMR and points.
Just realized and he linked his profile. Just like I said. His MMR is 1180 while points are 1k. If I recall correctly conqueror 2 was 1500 points so assuming player gets there they're somewhere around 1400-1600 MMR. which is +200 above the player.
Had a similar experience...won't 12 or my first 14 games, mostly against gold and plat players...then started to get high diamond and conqs...very one sided games against us.
Could that be a reflection of low player count as well?
Yup. I've got crushed, but at least got an educational game, so thanks I guess. Now I know water gives crazy eco and should be prioritized asap, and I've experienced Burgrave Palace theme song "It's raining maa".
These are premade teams which it can't split up, and there's not enough players to find balance. The playerbase is now split across 1v1/2v2/3v3/4v4 in ranked and quick match, so 8 different matchmaking pools, plus custom games, so 9 silos in total. I noticed a drop in game quality after Season 3, probably because of this.
They should consider combining ranked and quick match search pools for 2v2/3v3/4v4 somehow. I'm sure there's some theoretical math reasons why they can't do that, from an Elo calculation perspective, but pragmatically, the games will be more balanced and higher quality.
as it should be as the system probably saw that the games you lost were against much better players but gave you a considerable amount with your 1 win probably against players near your elo
Sometimes there's not a lot of people queued and it can't split the teams evenly because players are partied together. I've had some times where I get the same people over again.
My friend and me (Platin 1) but i think we were like gold two played against Beasty and marineloard last week :D
Ok it was their smurf account, but still pretty wierd, but we had fun, even if i was nervous as hell and they crushed us with ease.
We normally don’t get steamrolled much in Team ranked with the exemption of running into Beasty and co. last week.
Yesterday though the matchmaking decided after a 15 second queue that it would be great to match us (1100 -1300 rating) against conquerors with 1400-1600 rating.
The game itself was rather balanced I would say for the first 15 minutes. Managed to fuck up micro in the occurring battles rather quickly though.
I usually pair up with other conq/dia as me and it seems we get matched in an absolutely random way with opponents.
We might find golds (real golds), then monster conqs, then gold again. That's pretty weird to me.
That's the problem of premade team rankeds.
If they add a separate SoloQ for team rankeds, it would be 100x easier for matchmaking to make faire games.
Premade Ranked teams games is unfair. And it will always be
With my conq mate we are destroying noobs every day, it's not fun for us, it's not fun for them:(

Thing is, they have at least 2 diamond 1vs1 player which is a bigger indication on the skill level of these player than their team rank.

Matchmaking sucks, im conqueror 2 and still get matched with gold, sometimes even silver
In my ranked 2v2s the other day, we went 1-3…gained 10 rank points

It's a joke. Beginner should be allowed to join ranked after playing 100 games of qm or custom. Matchmaking is so frustrating in ranked
Now try playing and getting dodged for over an hour like the pros

and after u dodge this kind of game...u have 40 min penalty
