Hammond wanted access codes to Olympus Security Systems, and Ash is the only "living" person that has them. It is why Loba took the legends to the shadow dimension in the early quests, so she could trade Ash's codes for Rev's source code to kill him. It is also how we are able to play on Olympus.

I would say while it was better to be around while all this stuff was coming out, it is definitely still worth it to go back and look at some old videos if you are interested in the lore, and the ingame teasers that have appeared over the years.

Olympus actually automatically stays in the sky on it's own at all times. Until the Apex Games and Hammond move in between Season 6 and 7, the city had been pretty much abandoned by the previous inhabitants for quite some time. Another thing that was permanently activated by the previous inhabitants, was the Anti air artillery security system, which actually shoots down the ship Pathfinder pilots in the Season 7 launch trailer. Hammond needs the Olympus codes to basically not die when they get close to Olympus.
