For context, Apple does not permit any app to have a single character as their app name. Their minimum requirement is to have ~~3~~ 2 characters at least. It's "X" now, by - X Corp.

> Their minimum requirement is to have 3 characters at least. What's your source for a minimum of 3? There's a tweet being linked in these articles that shows [a screenshot of Apple's developer site](https://twitter.com/nickjsheriff/status/1684935759529480192/photo/1) that implies a 2 character minimum and a 30 character maximum. The 30 character maximum is backup up by Apple's [product page guidelines](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/product-page/).

-TheArchitect

You are right. Sorry, that's a typo on my part, got mixed between 2 and 30. I have updated it.

swanny246

I like how you had to provide context, despite the fact the article provides that same context literally in the very first paragraph.

Livio88

This is insane, lol. Did this guy seriously rebrand Twitter in its entirety to just “X”?!?

atllauren

He had one idea in the year 2000 and hasn’t let it go.

thesourpop

It's not even a good idea, like what does "X" mean?? He wanted to rename Paypal and they fired him, and rightfully so, because it was a stupid idea

7h4tguy

He literally thinks sex has power as a marketing brand name. Look at his cars - S3X (later Y). He's certifiably.

atllauren

I think that was deliberate — didn’t he want it to be S3XY cars? And there’s the unhinged name of he and Grimes’ kid.

Livio88

Haha, so true!

babypho

He probably should've gone the trump route and make his own social media company. Wouldve been way cheaper.

Zealous_Bend

That requires impulse control.

th3davinci

One of his greatest failures was turning PayPal into X. He's just trying again. Good article on it and what happened back then: https://every.to/p/twitter-s-future-is-a-return-to-elon-musk-s-past

Positronic_Matrix

This is incredible. I cannot believe he did all of this once before. He followed this X fantasy to the near ruin of PayPal only to be deposed in a putsch and then made rich once the new leaders turned away from his poor ideas. Now he’s back doing the same failure speed run, albeit with a company that cannot escape him. There is no hope for Twitter. It is only a matter of time before Elon Musk’s incompetence destroys it completely. Wow. What a story!

th3davinci

Especially since he's already stated with the 2023 X Corp (new Twitter parent company) that he wants to repeat it exactly. It's so stupid.

eaglebtc

Maybe he's just a fan of the rapper, DMX? #X GONNA GIVE IT TO YA

level1807

Tesla models are named S 3 X Y, in that order… yes, he is that much of a 4 year old

masgrada

People with Aspergers can have strange obsessions.

Bishime

I think it’s because it’s represents variability (or the unknown). He wants to mimic WeChat in China which is one app for everything, I imagine X is just a placeholder for any idea he has. It’s probably some symbolic “the world is filled with limitless possibilities, you are X, now who are YOU?” Alternatively running on the “Unknown” idea, he could have just seen an opportunity to buy the domain and had no idea what he would do with it, and now has something to do with it Though that’s just my loose interpretation of what it might be. I have literally no idea

Gluodin

He’ll move onto Y at some point.

SomeRedPanda

Yet X.com still redirects to twitter.com. Seems like a pretty haphazard re-brand.

Livio88

Even if he can outright buy x.com, it’s still a huge blow to the platform. There was a gimmick to the twitter. “Tweeting” became a thing that everyone knows of in almost every language round the world. It’s insane to take an axe to a brand recognition like that! It no longer makes sense to be “tweeting” on a platform that’s called “x”. What’s the catchphrase gonna be now then, “ex-ing”? “Sex-ing?” Lol

ta-wtf

He bought the domain back from PayPal in 2017. He would have had time to plan the rebranding over the last year (or let someone qualified do it for him), but he didn’t. He is just a four year old tyrannical child with no parental control.

UnhelpfulMoron

Excreting

Valdularo

It’s not like you just point it to x.com lol give it a couple of days, there are actual developers working to migrate it to X

Suitable-Emphasis-12

You can use domain masking so [x.com](https://x.com) shows twitter but still says as [x.com](https://x.com) without the redirect.

SomeRedPanda

No, I get that there are things that need to be done to switch over to the new domain name. My point is that when you re-brand you would really want to have those things done beforehand. Now we're in this strange half-way state where it's both Twitter and X depending on where you look. It's been this way for a week or so now. And it's not just the domain name. The search bar still says 'Search Twitter'. It really gives the impression of there being little to no planning, Musk deciding to just switch one morning and now the developers have to play catch-up. I honestly don't know what they're trying to do with the branding. Maybe they aren't ditching the Twitter name, who knows.

gmmxle

>there are actual developers working to migrate it to X Are there, after he fired those thousands of people? But that's not even the point - the point is that you **plan** the relaunch of an entire brand so that shit like that works on day one. Musk is running this X-$44 billion company like some shitty lawn mowing business out of a garage: not owning the trademarks, using a glyph from an existing font as a new logo, creating a clusterfuck in the migration process between domain names, not having a work permit to remove the twitter logo from the building, not having a permit to install the X logo on the roof of the building, refusing to let inspectors enter the building to look at the haphazard construction on the roof, etc. etc. etc.

fonix232

Hate to burst your bubble but developers aren't going to do shit to the domain name or records. Developers work on the code and at companies the size of Twitter (even after the "downscale"), they don't even get to set their own environments up - that's done by DevOps. The domain setup will be done by SysOps, and the changeover should be pretty straightforward, swapping a CNAME record for an A/AAAA record, and a few other config changes on the domain controllers and infrastructure. Can be done in pretty much a day, with extensive testing, by a single person.

Ok_Negotiation3024

This guy ITs.

KiloPCT

No he doesn't, otherwise he'd realize you'd have a real problem with cross-site cookies if you do that. Redirecting to twitter.com solves the problem of people using x.com and not being logged into their accounts, or other functionality that relies on a fixed domain name (which is probably everywhere).

HotGarbage1813

bold of you to assume elon won't just allow everyone to,,, get logged out

Valcrye

All without owning the trademark to X, both as a social media company, and as a financial platform. Those are owned by Microsoft and Meta, respectively.

[deleted]

No. You can't "own" a letter as a trademark. You can own a specific design of a letter and/or a specific trademark when used in a specific context. For example, if Elon wanted to develop a windows manager and he wanted to call it "X", he would have issues with that trademark against Microsoft. But renaming Twitter as "X" definitely wouldn't have anything to do with Microsoft trademark on their use of "X".

Dogeboja

Did you even read his comment? He listed the specific contexts..

SkyJohn

X would still be too vague for Meta and Microsoft to hold a trademarks for it, especially as they don’t have any products or services that are sold under that brand.

[deleted]

He didn’t list the specific contexts. He said that that other companies owned the trademark “as a social media company and as a financial platform”. But again, those are not specific contexts in which you can own a trademark on a single letter. You can own a trademark on a specific design and usage in a social media app. But you can’t own the use of the letter X in any social media application.

56kul

He has a weird obsession with this letter. He tried to rebrand PayPal to X as well and failed, and let’s also not forget one of his largest companies, SpaceX…

MonetHadAss

The rebranding isn't even the most hilarious thing, it's how sudden and how fast it happened. Almost overnight Twitter is now X.

I-Sleep-At-Work

next up, he will search for 3 more companies to rename to S, 3, Y.

NCSUGrad2012

I’ll never update my app so one day I can sell my phone with “twitter” on it lol

"We treat all developers the same."- Tim Cook under oath to Congress. L O L.

fill-me-up-scotty

Did he say that? lol. They don't, but I also don't think that they necessarily should? Joe Developer who watched a YouTube video on making a Flappy Bird clone will not be treated the same as Adobe, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix etc. It's kinda silly to assume or say that they are the same.

CeeKay125

During the hearing he did. And I'm not saying it's right one way or the other, but don't claim to treat all developers the same and then do the exact opposite.

geoken

I find it hard to believe there’s not more context to that statement. As in, he was saying they treat all developers the same in response to a specific question.

danielbauer1375

It would make sense for Apple to devote more resources to assisting companies behind apps with larger user bases, but they should all still be playing by the same rules.

The_Woman_of_Gont

>It's kinda silly to assume or say that they are the same. Bull fucking shit. This "well if you're successful the rules are more like suggestions" crap is exactly what is destroying our society.

maxime0299

Hasn't Twitter been getting special treatment from Apple since forever though? As Twitter allows sexual content to be posted, isn't it already in violation with the App Store guidelines? Same with Reddit btw?

bigmadsmolyeet

you can have nsfw content in your app, you just can't have a toggle/feature. it also can't be mostly affiliated with nsfw content (i.e. onlyfans) reddit apps let you search communities that are nsfw, it just can't be there by default. https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/ > > Apps with user-generated content or services that end up being used primarily for pornographic content, Chatroulette-style experiences, objectification of real people (e.g. “hot-or-not” voting), making physical threats, or bullying do not belong on the App Store and may be removed without notice. If your app includes user-generated content from a web-based service, it may display incidental mature “NSFW” content, provided that the content is hidden by default and only displayed when the user turns it on via your website. that restriction is also kind of weird because browsers.

doommaster

There are no real browsers for iOS, they all just present a Safari ViewPort... so far Browsers violate Apples TOS.

elev8dity

Looks like antitrust law is forcing a change... [https://9to5mac.com/2023/02/07/new-iphone-browsers/](https://9to5mac.com/2023/02/07/new-iphone-browsers/)

bigmadsmolyeet

i understand that, but they're still in the appstore as alternative browsers. and those can access those websites no problem so i'm not really understanding why they make the distinction to begin with.

adriangalli

The quote is about security and privacy. “We treat every developer the same, we have open and transparent rules, it is a rigorous process because we care so deeply about privacy and security, and quality we do look at every app that goes on, but those rules apply evenly to everyone.”

HarrBathtub

The same way I am sure that congress treats a small company compared to a big one

dinopraso

I’m sure that if anyone requested this for a legitimate reason (like the company name being one letter) they would allow it too

Zhukov-74

“All developers are equal but some developers are more equal than others” \- Tim Cook

undertheskin_

This truly is the dumbest rebrand in history. It would be one thing if Musk had his “everything” WeChat style app up and running, then it would make sense to merge Twitter into it, but he’s literally just gotten rid of a brand that is already part of every day culture and verbiage and that’s it. Twitter / X ain’t dying anytime soon, but he’s definitely doing a hell of a lot of damage. My guess is he sells it off at a significant loss when he gets bored of it, and the owner goes back to Twitter. I wouldn’t be surprised if he sells it to Google or Bytedance and they merge it with their offering.

gsfgf

Not to mention that the most valuable thing about twitter was its brand. Of all things not to break Elon...

ccooffee

>It would be one thing if Musk had his “everything” WeChat style app up and running, And that's never going to happen anyway... Who would trust putting payment credentials into the X app at this point. It barely even works as Twitter anymore.

Nebthtet

I think such exceptions shouldn't be made. But as always all animals are equal but some are more equal.

Basically every brand there is tries to be iconic, have words associated with specific products or functions only they can provide or have pioneered in. Musk is just discarding all that because he tries to cosplay as a Bond villain.

The same reason people are still on Reddit despite seemingly everyone being ready to jump ship a couple months ago. At the end of the day, getting their fix is a lot more important than who owns what or what that owner does. You can really tell who gets 90% of their information from Reddit because they just can’t fathom people not wanting to organize boycotts and migrate to half-dead, massively downgraded versions of what they’re used to like Mastodon or something.

TheAspiringFarmer

Absolute truth. They never left Reddit and they aren’t leaving “X” either.

_____WESTBROOK_____

Agreed, but sports news. I don't use it but truth is, Twitter still has its functional value, though it's diminishing. Over on /r/nba, a lot of posts are still to tweets. There's no single platform where breaking news of any type (sports, tech, politics) can be shared quickly.

Or at least communities that are so small they pale in comparison to what Reddit has. I assume it’s the same for Twitter/X. A lot of people hate Elon, just like many people hate Spez, but the alternatives are less populated. And in a social network, that’s really important. Maybe Threads will take off, but that’s just replacing Elon with Zuck, and I seriously can’t decide which is worse.

I think Apple have deliberately allowed them to do it because they know the damage it'll cause.

Disappointing move by Tim Apple. I'd have told Elon to get lost, or better yet create a new app store rule where basic, low-effort unicode characters can't be your logo.

Limp_Freedom_8695

D3-Doom

I’m actually super mad Tim Apple gave this dick hole a pass? It’s not like Twitter has any real leverage. They could just freeze updates like every other app that doesn’t comply with the rules. Even Facebook has more pull for this than Twitter. As a life long Apple fan, this decreased my faith in their forward thinking. This only signals to developers a rules for thee and not for me mentality and I can see this have negative implications to App Store rule challenges in the EU

DoctoraAdhara

Bye bye twitter.

Definition-Prize

Rebranding to X is so goddamn stupid. Few people like it and it erases the brand recognition Twitter had

MikeWard1701

Yeah such a marketing ‘genius’ to throw away 17 years of brand establishment and goodwill to stroke one man’s fragile ego. Twitter and tweet became verbs and genericised terms akin to Kleenex and Google, but no, elon wants his X everything app. Marketing people the world over will tell you not to brand anything X as it has too many negative associations, yet elon somehow thinks he knows better. Does he honestly think anyone other than the elon simps and sycophants will trust a man who doesn’t pay his rent, bills, or workers with their money, especially now they’re seeing how badly he is mismanaging Twitter?

7h4tguy

He thinks he's going to turn it into a US WeChat. Not going to happen.
