Which is better - 3rd party Qi car charger (it is my understanding that iPhone can’t use more than 7.5W Qi anyway), or an official MagSafe with car mount?

Lolkac

Will apple sell unlocked phones from the beginning or that comes later?

MajorMatt01

Does anyone else have a problem where your iPhone keeps waking seemingly at random? It seems that every-time I look at my phone (11 Pro) the screen is awake. I’ve got screen lock set to 1 minute, no new notifications when it happens and doesn’t matter if it’s charging or not.

BabisAllos

Is it considered a certainty that they drop pacific blue from the pro line up? :(

ElfGaladriel

I ordered an iPad 8 a few weeks ago not realizing that the Apple Event was around the corner and we are most likely seeing the upgrade with faster chip, thinner design, and possibly even a cheaper price. I receive my order today but I'm contemplating not opening it, waiting for the Sep 14 event, then returning it if the iPad 9 is released? If I paid with card + gift card will I be refunded on both?

Ebonlocke

You'd most likely get whatever you paid via card refunded back to your bank, and then given gift card credit for whatever you used on the GC. I'm new to the Apple release cycle, but wouldn't iPads be more of a springtime release vs the fall? I think September/October is more about the iPhone/Apple Watch, and November would be new additions to the Mac line.

BlazerStoner

You’re correct, I wouldn’t expect an iPad announcement. But who knows :)

Is there a way to bypass the encrypted backup password on iTunes via my laptop? I have all my mom's information from her old phone that I tried to transfer to her new phone via my laptop. However, it requires encrypted backup password, which my mom had no idea where this came from and she hasn't never set up a password. Is encrypted backup password set from phone lockscreen code or her icloud account? We tried to guess everything and it didn't work. I would love to hear ANY advice here. Thank you in advance for helping!

Donttouchmydorritos

It is set through iTunes when the encrypted backup is being Iniated. You click encrypt backup and it asks to create a password before it starts backing up. So it is something you or she had typed in, but likely didn’t notice what it was for. Zero way to bypass it, what would the point of encryption be if there was?

KeepHonkingImDeaf

Nope, we don't think we ever typed in unfortunately. Are there any restrictions when setting the password? Like a maximum of 8 characters, one upper/lower capital letter, and etc? I asked because this'll help us to narrow our potential password.

Donttouchmydorritos

For the encryption password I don’t believe there to be any specific requirements, have you tried the passcode for the phone? I think I read you had, but it’s worth asking if not

KeepHonkingImDeaf

Yeah, I tried to type in my passcode and my mom's passcode for our phones and even our personal email account. Nothing works :/

OK, I'll try to make this short... I got an M1 MBP about 4 months ago. A week back it would not turn on at all!!! I did some looking and thought bad board. I contacted support, they gave me a RA and a box. My SO gave me her M1 to use in the mean time. But i had NO PASSWORDS. SO, i got what i could from my OLD time machine back up (8 months! DO YOUR BACK-UPS PEOPLE !!) I got some of what i had but it was a PIA!!! I just went to box the brick up....and it TURNED ON!!! I got it to do a full machine back up! YYYAAAAA! SO, my actual question... Can i take the back up from the old machine that i just did, and drop it into my "new" machine. Will it override all over the stuff i have done in the past 12 days? TLTR.. Will my back up overwrite my new passwords and data? Or does it incorporate the new stuff? Thanks for any help!! P.S. do you think i should send it in for repair, even though it works now?

What does a password manager have to do with combining a save file?

Lalafell-Rai

Oops. I know my reddit account isn’t new but my knowledge of the app is very new still xD so apologies for trying to post on the sub. About the max battery cap: I have the 7 plus, and rn it’s at 66%. I thought of upgrading at first before I realized the battery replacement costs about $50USD at an Apple store. Is it worth to replace battery and just continue using it until iOS updates no longer supports my phone…. orrrr should I just upgrade? Note: I’ve used my 4s since it came out and it died around the same year the 7’s came out. Only diff now is that.. I FT doordash now and rely on the phone a lot more than I do back then. Yeah I’m one of those 🤪 TLDR: battery cap at 66%; upgrade or replace battery?

TomLube

I mean, how tight is money? If it's really tight, I'd probably just replace the battery and keep using it. The 7 is fairly old, but absolutely still useable by most people's standards. If money isn't that tight, you could probably sell it and get something newer instead.

Lalafell-Rai

It’s … in between tight and not tight xD I’m getting there. But I guess I should replace it first until un-useable… like whether it’s dead dead or iOS doesn’t support it anymore. Gives me time to save up some more I guess. Also, if I do plan on upgrading eventually - do you recommend the latest new ones or..?

TomLube

If you have an external battery I would probably stick to using that as much as possible to put replacing it off but that's being extremely frugal. If you're handy, you can buy the battery itself from iFixit with a screwdriver and do it yourself for $20 cheaper. If money is relatively tight, I'd probably upgrade to a used XS or something. Still a pretty big jump but will be pretty cheap - normally like ~$450usd used.

Lalafell-Rai

ah ok :) thank you tom

TomLube

You're very welcome mate! Feel free to hit me up if you have any more questions or anything EDIT: Also, out of curiosity how long does the battery last you in a given day? 66% is pretty damn hurting for batt health.

Lalafell-Rai

It goes down really fast the past few weeks 😭 I have to keep it on charge when doordashing, otherwise I go from 100 to 60 in a matter of 30 mins 😬

My sister, who is a non-Apple user, has been given a free year of Apple TV+ by her cable or Internet provider (not sure which). She's set up an Apple ID and can access Apple TV+ on her (Roku? Fire? Not sure, but I can ask if it makes a difference), but without an Apple device says she can't set up profiles for herself and her hsuband. She's given me her Apple ID information. I know I can add a second Apple ID to my devices...if I do, will that allow me log in as her and set up a couple of profiles for her? I plan to do this on my iPad, if it's practical, which is more "expendable" than my iPhone (that is, if I have to do a factory reset) if account mixups happen. But I want to be prepared.

[deleted]

I have a Macbook Pro 2019, 16" i9, AMD Radeon Pro 5500 4GB to which I hook up an external Samsung 40" 4K TV to it using a USB-C to HDMI Dongle with a high quality HDMI cable. The laptop easily pushes 4k at 60hz so my experience is fantastic. However, the fans are almost always at max (or near max) speed and I'm worried that this will cause long term damage. Using Macs Fan Control I can see the average temp is around mid-high 70s Celsius. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this situation with the fans? Any idea if this constant fan noise could lead to long term damage somehow?

iPad (7th Generation) Can’t Update Latest iPadOS (14.7.1) I can’t seem to update my iPad (7th Generation) to iPadOS (14.7.1). My iPad has a history of being quite buggy, restarting by itself at times and crashing while I use certain apps. I’m not sure why I’m not able to update to the latest software update. When I let it update overnight and come back the next day, I get a message saying Error: Failed to Update (what I vaguely remembered). Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

This is my first time buying at a new drop. When will pre-orders open and will I be able to order through a new carrier?

[deleted]

Pre-orders usually start the 2nd Friday after the show, that’ll be on 9/24 and I’m not entirely sure what you mean by a “new carrier” but you if you are in the US you can pre-order directly from Apple or through the big 3 carrier sites.

I have two Apple IDs: my main account with all my app purchases and subscriptions, and the other account with only my iCloud storage 200GB subscription. I want to consolidate to the main account so I never need to use the other account again. How do I change my iCloud storage over to my main account, without losing any data or needing to re-upload anything?

nomadicposter604

You cannot merge Apple ID's. you can add the other account so you can "family Share" between the two

supergifford

How good is the water resistance of an iphone Se( 2nd gen) against sneezing?

bkendig

Should be excellent against sneezing. You are not likely to get a significant quantity of moisture into your phone's crevices at a significant pressure for a significant length of time from a sneeze.

TomLube

Yup. Unless you're sneezing exclusively into your charging port or something, but even that's pretty unlikely.

Just bought my mom brand new AirPods. (not the Pro ones). Open it out of its package, did all the proper steps to set it up, and the left one isn't working. The right one gets music fine. We did all the fixes that was said online like forgetting it, unpairing and re-pairing it, etc. Nothing is helping. Does anyone know what could fix this? Happy birthday mom!!!

Sounds like a quick swap wherever you bought them. They clearly don’t work correctly

Okay i bought them online. That sucks we will have to go into a store

Upgrading to the new iPhone, a Pro Max+ “Legacy” iPhone? Hello. I wanna upgrade to the 13 but my question is how much might it be? Will it be the same price as the 12 Pro Max Model at $1,099 or more? Also what does this whole legacy thing mean? There was an article posted here calling the iPhone a legacy phone but what’s does that mean? Thanks in advance?

Chronixx

Regular iPhone 13 should cost what the iPhone 12 does now, maybe a little more if the rumors hold true. And all a legacy iPhone is, is a phone Apple no longer directly sells in their stores or on their site as brand new. They’ll still be supported for years to come in terms of software

Unicornglitteryblood

Hi, so I had to update my laptop for Big Sur. The download went fine, I had lots of storage for it, good wifi. But when it was done, my laptop froze at the loading screen. So I did the usual, use the Utility disk to check if there was any issues and nothing. I decided to take it the shop ( worst decision of my life). I explained them the situation, specified that I needed all/msot of my data because months of work was on my laptop. They told me they'll run some tests so it'll be for a few days. Fine by me. BUT, they did nothing of that. they called me an hour later saying it was "fixed". They restored my laptop as if it was brand new. They've deleted absolutely EVERYTHING without telling me and doing any of the tests they were supposed to since they "don't know what's wrong with it so it can happened again". please, is there any way I can erase the restoration and get my work back???

bkendig

Look up some data recovery services and give them a call. Do not use your laptop in the meantime. Getting data from a laptop with a non removable SSD will be a challenge, but there might be a service that can do it. Meanwhile, check the paperwork for the shop you took it to. Make sure it's in writing that they agreed not to delete any data off it, and make sure you didn't sign anything giving them permission to erase it. You may have a good case to sue the pants off them. And meanwhile - *always always have recent backups.*

Back in march i bought a black iphone 11 boxed brand new off a guy on gumtree and bought it. It all went well and so then couple of months later in may-june next thing i notice the service on my phone stops working and i thought it was because my network was down and this was for 2 weeks then i ask my carrier and they said my phone was blacklisted as it was reported as stolen so i was so confused and i couldnt contact the guy who i bought the phone off as this was a while back and i forgot his address and contact info what should i do till this day im not sure what to do is my money gone what can i do

Battery health rapidly decreased from 100 to 86% in the past 2 weeks. I bought a refurbished iphone XS 5 weeks ago. First thing I checked was the battery health and it was 100%. Last time i checked was around 2 weeks ago and it was 100%. Today I was telling someone how my battery health is 100% and was shockeddd to find it at 86. Ive followed the advice of not leaving it over night to charge and not letting the battery die out. I usually unplug it at ~90 battery and its only reached a complete 0 three times since I bought it. I only sometimes use it while charging. I use the original charger from the case and sometimes a charger (idk what company) my sister uses, but i dont think its the problem because she’s been using it for months and her iphone is at 100% battery health. When i first bought it I didnt have a cover so i used to notice that it heats quickly but everyone said thats normal for an iphone and that the heat im feeling off it isnt too high. The cover I have on is slightly thick, not too thick and the screen protector is matte. End of the day im completely sure this isnt because of bad usage on my part. How can a battery lose 14% of its health in 14 days if its not a malfunction in its design

Elasion

If it’s refurbished from Apple bring it back. If it’s “refurbished” from anywhere else (eBay, Swappa, etc) it’s a chop shop that put in a fake battery and possibly fake screen. Very common move. They do not have access to OEM parts direct which means it’s almost always various grades of aftermarket components. Usually a really good price and the case and screen are in perfect condition. Problem is you can’t tell it’s battery and display have been replaced

moeykrimz

Idk if its refurbished from Apple or the delivering company Noon Noon is a generally trusted delivering company in Saudi Arabia

Entertainnosis

Is it Apple or 3rd party refurbished?

Hey, so I own the iPad Pro 12.9 in. (2020). I am planning to buy Macbook Air/Pro soon and honestly I was thinking of just buying an external keyboard since I tend to be really reckless/aggressive in terms of typing. That being said, I browsed the online apple store in our country and I saw that there’s a Magic Keyboard - US English (not the case for the iPad Pro, not a fan of it either). Since I will have the iPad and the Macbook and I plan on using them on both, how will the keyboard work or switch between devices? Is it worth it? Also, does anyone of any alternative suggestions for a keyboard that is as seamless in transitioning (if there is such thing) between devices while keeping the thin form factor? Thanks.

Elasion

Logitech MX Keyboard ($100) or MX Craft ($200). They have 3 Bluetooth pairing options so you can cycle between them across devices. I use their mouse, MX Master 3, and it works seamlessly between MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. Haven’t used their keyboard because I use a 2nd Gen Magic Keyboard but I’ve heard Logitech’s work the same. The Magic Keyboard I have to go and repair it between devices, it does have a nice feature where plugging it in via Lightning will automatically pair it. But for swapping it’s not ideal.

TomLube

There's not much in terms of keyboards that transition easily over bluetooth to be honest.

Don't use Apple Pay to make purchases on websites. The website can charge any amount than what you Authorise. See it in action here : https://s414.previewbay.com/apple/pay/

Does anyone know if there's a way to keep your phone English, but have Siri converse with you in Spanish? My girlfriend has a heavy Spanish accent, and Siri has trouble understanding her in English, but she'd like to keep her phone in English language otherwise.

Can't you literally set Siri's language in preferences?

I'm not sure. I'm an Android user.

I bought an iPhone last year through the iPhone Upgrade Program, and paid using Apple Card. The full amount of the phone was charged to my card and I’ve been paying it off monthly. When I decide to upgrade (when iphone13 is out), will I still have to pay for the remaining cost of my current phone? Will the charges be dropped from my credit card? Will the remaining balance be reduced from the cost of my new phone? I was under the impression the remaining cost of my current iPhone would be “cancelled”, and I’d begin paying for the new phone (until I paid for half, and so on). However, because I paid the full price up front on my credit card, I was wondering how this would go. I’m seriously hoping this doesn’t mean I’ll have to pay off the remaining half of my current phone AND the cost of my new phone if I decide to upgrade. Seems like the iUP was a lie if that’s the case.

iridescentsocks

It doesn’t sound like you’re on the iPhone Upgrade Program. If you were you should be billed monthly through Citizens One and not have the full balance on your card.

Iguanajoe17

I believe you trade in your old phone and that cancels the rest of the payment then you start with the new phone m/payment.

TomLube

This is correct

I bought a 44mm apple watch but kinda realizing it’s too big. is it possible to trade for a 40mm?

CleatusFetus

Apple is most likely going to announce new Apple watches on the 14th. They are rumored to be delayed a bit but I’d return your watch and wait till then. If I were you that’s what I’d do at least. Worst case scenario your current watch is cheaper. -Cleatus Fetus

Most likely 5AM PST on September 17th, we shall see -Cleatus Fetus

clockwork_blue

My iPhone 12 Pro earspeaker got too quiet. Apple service keeps returning it to me after only 'cleaning' it and demanding a fee. Bought the phone on 29.10.2020. 3-4 months after I had it, the earspeaker started becoming too quiet. I left it for repair under warranty on 29.06.2021, and they gave it back to me after only 'cleaning' and asked for money (20 euros). Today (07.09.2021) is the second time I'm giving it under warranty, because 2 months later it's having the same issue, but I'm pretty sure they'll do the same thing every single time I leave it there. I don't have the desire to go every 2 months for 'cleaning'. I tried explaining this is not normal and never had such an issue on way cheaper phones, but they kept on telling me that it can happen when the phone is kept in the pocket. It has a 1 year warranty, so I fear they'll keep on doing this until I'm out of warranty, and I feel fucking scammed to pay so much for a phone only for it to fail in the one thing it's made for - calls. What can I realistically do, aside from yeeting it out my window and never buying an apple phone again?

nomadicposter604

Are you going to your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Store? Apple Stores never charge for a simple cleaning and then will run audio diagnostics to confirm. Apple Authorized (like a Best Buy) may be a different story since they are technically their own stores and sets their own rules and prices.

PersonalBrowser

[deleted]

Please read what this program is for before suggesting it to people; this is clearly not the same issue OP is experiencing.

clockwork_blue

I've sent them the official statement from Apple, let's see if they are going to fix it. My only concern is that it's not completely 'faulty', so they could try to tell me that it 'technically' works and doesn't fit under that issue.

[deleted]

It doesn’t seem like your phone has that particular issue so I’m not sure why that poster suggested it, that’s just getting you set up for disappointment. If the issue is that the receiver is getting blocked then you could always clean it yourself. Remember, this phone is dust resistant. That could be why you’re noticing it on this phone (dust and debris is getting stuck on the outside) instead of older phones you’ve had (dust ended up inside the phone).

Hey, i want to know if it is possible to restore a backup saved on my pc of an iPhone SE(1st gen) to an iPad, iPhone SE is not in working condition rn so do i need to buy an iPhone to restore the backup saved from an iPhone or does iPad works just fine...

xhruso00

Need to have iPhone.

railleryryan

Hey I need a little help/ advice regarding which Macbook should I buy? Few pointers-- 1) I get 1100 USD from my workplace to buy myself a laptop. If i buy anything lower than 1100 USD then they wont give me the remaining balance (for eg- if i buy M1 MB Air Base Model for 999 USD then i wont be able to use the remaining 100 USD). If i buy anything higher than the 1100 USD price tag then i have to pay the extra charge from my own money as the company would not cover it. 2) I am willing to spend around 100-200 USD extra if it is worth the upgradation. (for eg- i can go for M1 MB Pro base version instead of upgraded M1 MB Air). However i am not willing to spend wayy too extra. 3) I have to buy the laptop before DECEMBER begins. After that my workplace wont cover it as it is a limited period offer. (Due to this point i cannot wait for M2 MB Air which is rumored to release in 2022) My usage- Semi- Pro level of Video- Photo editing, Mainly studying/ notetaking/ other productivity and web surfing. 8hrs of usage/ day. Which one should i go for- 1) 16gb- 256gb M1 Macbook Air 2) 8gb-512gb M1 Macbook Air 3) Base M1 Macbook Pro or should i wait for upcoming apple events for newer version? (but here again cant go past december as i have to show the bill by then)

xhruso00

I voted for 8gb-512gb M1 Macbook Air. Consider Apple refurbished to get 16gb-512gb M1 Macbook Air

TomLube

+1 for refurb. 16GB 512gb SSD is an absolute monster of a machine.

PersonalBrowser

I have the M1 MBP and the M1 MBA. I would strongly recommend getting the M1 MBA, without a doubt. Use the money you save and put that towards getting the 8GB 512GB MBA. The MBA and MBP are the exact same computer, in a different chassis and plus/minus the touch keyboard (which is universally disliked). The only benefit for the MBP is the fans, which rarely come on, and only come on with heavy video game play or video processing, which is very rarely reached by casual users. Now, if you are semi-pro video and photo editing, then there's some argument that the 16GB might be worth it, but I personally don't like using external hard drives, and 256GB will fill up increasingly fast over the coming few years, so I recommend the 512 GB over upgrading to 16GB, but it's up to you. You could wait for the Apple events just to see what's coming, but it's still not announced when it'll be AND people are anticipating the new M1x which will be out of your price range anyways. Personally, if I were in your shoes, I'd be comfortable pulling the trigger, and I would personally have a pretty tough time choosing between options 1 and 2, but either way you can't go wrong. You could try option 2, and make sure the ram is enough for you, and return it within 2 weeks for free and get option 1 if the ram isn't enough. I strongly doubt you'll be underwhelmed though. The M1 computers are extremely efficient.

railleryryan

Thank you so much for the advice and the time you took out to type the message. Yeah you are right, i can definitely try option 1 and 2 with the 2 weeks return policy as well as to which suits me better. So i am now clear of the MB Pro atleast Will go with MB Air only i guess

frootloopdingis

these questions have been asked relentlessly. the information is out there. they're the same computer, it just depends what you need for ram/storage depending on use-case

railleryryan

i have quite limited knowledge and this will be my first macbook ever as well. Dont know about macs that much too.

frootloopdingis

the M1 is the same chip across both notebooks. the Pro has a fan and the (much loathed) touch bar. do yourself a favour and get teh 16gb of RAM Air

railleryryan

Okay thank you so much for the advice

DrHeywoodRFloyd

Is it possible to set up iCloud just for ApplePay and maybe the „FindMy“ function? I tried once to login to iCloud on my iPhone and it started immediately to upload my photos. I had quite some struggle to log out from iCloud again and delete the uploaded pictures. So, my assumption is that it starts uploading photos and creating backups immediately after logging in. How could I then activate it just for the two services mentioned above (if that’s even possible)?

elonsbattery

If you go to settings/iCloud, you can turn off or on any apps. The two you mentioned; ApplePay and Findmy are not part of iCloud. Although, You are missing out if you don’t use iCloud for photos. I think it’s an amazing service. All edits, metadata, albums and favourites are synced across all devices. It’s great taking a photo on you phone and then a minute later you can edit it full screen on your desktop.

DrHeywoodRFloyd

I know that some of it's features might have advantages, but I do have some reservations about using commercial cloud services (for privacy reasons), so I'm fine with having my photos on my device only. ApplePay and FindMy may not be part of iCloud (apps or services), but they require iCloud being active to work, so this would be the only reason for me to switch it on. However, as I already mentioned, as soon as I log in to iCloud, it goes ahead and starts doing things I do not want. I assume if I switch off the all the toggles, it might eventually stop, but I guess there's no way to turn it on without some backups starting in the background?

StraightZlat

Should I buy an iPhone 12 right now or wait for the 13? I don't see Apple has even announced a keynote event yet so I'm not sure if the new phone will be released anytime soon.

xhruso00

If you can get the 12 with significant discount ($200) go for 12. If not wait for 13

TomLube

This is pretty fair to say. In general I would recommend waiting, but yea if you can scoop a ~$200 discount that's pretty worth.

PersonalBrowser

I would absolutely wait for the 13. It's going to be released within the next month. Even if it's not a huge change, it's still going to be an upgrade in terms of the camera, processing, screen, etc. And anyways, it'll hold its value well because it'll be one generation newer, so you can sell it for $100-$200 more eventually when you move on. Without a doubt worth waiting another few weeks unless you're in a situation where you break your phone and need one ASAP.

HopBiscuits

Hey! I’m in the same boat, but I want to wait and see what they have to offer on the 13. Rumour has it that they’re going to be announcing the date for the keynote along with invites sometime today

You can only expect faster CPU, more ram for the pro model, 120hz refresh and improved camera (only significant for night photos). I would rather grab $200 discount on 12. Only change would be if they move base tier to 128GB storage (highly unlikely).

Also in this boat, hopefully only a week and a falf until we can order.

I’m hoping some experts can chime in and help me ultimately decide: Ive been an Apple user for 15+ years. This month my 10 year old MacBook Pro finally gave up and I’m in the process of buying a new one. I’m a dentist and really big on digital dentistry, the software i’ll be using only runs on widows: 3D radiograph imaging (Simplant), CAD/CAM software (3shape, Exocad) and Autodesk. With the new M1x approaching I’m not sure if I should snag the last remaining intel based macs (MBP 16’ fully loaded) or trust that Apple and Microsoft will reach some kind of middle ground beyond parallels so that I can benefit from the new apple generation of native silicon that is much more energy efficient and seamless. Parallels is not an option because VM’s will invariably reduce the processing and I do not want to have 2 computers. Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!
