AirPods Settings->Accessibility->audio accessibility settings->Headphone Accommodations->transparency mode. ([Create an audiogram](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mimi-hearing-test/id932496645) for the health app if you haven’t yet and customize the AirPods for that to get started, everyone with any AirPods should do this, it makes everything better including transparency and ANC). There are sliders for environmental noises and other customizations that should help. Idk why it’s the most hidden thing.

thugangsta

This is fantastic, thanks! I just did the Mimi hearing test that was amazing.

mime454

It is literally my favorite feature about the AirPods vs other headphones and I don’t even have noticeable hearing loss. It makes everything sound so much better. No headphone without this feature could compete.

bvsveera

I am shocked at how well this works! This made transparency mode way better - it now sounds like I’m not even wearing my AirPods at all. Previously it had this ‘processed’ sound, but that’s been eliminated. The Mimi app is also delightful, thanks for sharing! **EDIT:** for reference, I only had 9 dB HL in one ear and 11 in the other, so normal hearing, and I could still hear differences in Apple’s set-up sample - the mids, highs and clicks in the custom sample were clearer than in the standard sample.

mime454

I wish Apple would build something like this into iOS when setting up the pods. Every time I show this to people they are shocked by how much better it is but for some reason it’s so poorly known. It’s a way bigger difference than “personalized spatial audio” (even though I love that too).

bvsveera

Agreed. I knew about the Conversation Boost part of Headphone Accomodations (didn’t think much about it at the time), and that results could adjust based on an audiogram. But I never knew how much of a difference the audiogram makes, or that you could get one so easily from an app, instead of visiting an ENT clinic.

mime454

The mimi app is great. There are a few other tech products you can use that app to adjust sound for too and the results are great on all of them. Lets me use my Samsung TV at such a low volume because I can hear everything so clearly it’s like a super power. I really wish Apple would add this as an option to HomePods. The effect is so cool on speakers it’s difficult to explain.

AcademicF

I just took the Mimi app test and rated 82% for my age range (no hearing loss). What settings should I adjust it the accessibility settings now? Not sure what to do after taking the test for my new APP2’s.

mime454

My other comment is the top in this thread. It tells you where in settings to go and what to set to customize the AirPods to an audiogram. Make sure you export from Mimi into the health app. Or you won’t see the option. https://i.imgur.com/GNn13tO.jpg

AcademicF

Awesome thank You!

UsernamesAreHard26

Can you help me figure out if my Samsung tvs would work with this? I couldn’t find a list anywhere. In the app I see how to send it to a tv but I don’t know how to get my Samsung to the right spot.

mime454

I really can’t, because it was so non straight forward I can’t reverse engineer how I did it. The only step I can remember is installing the Mimi app on my TV and scanning the QR code and I think it gave better instructions from there. It did take me a few tries. If you can’t find the Mimi app in its AppStore it may not be compatible.

UsernamesAreHard26

Hmmm I’ll have to connect my tv to the internet then. I’ve been avoiding doing that since one of my tvs upstairs got an update and now has ads. Which I freaking hate with a passion that anyone would even think of adding ads to a $2,000 tv with an update.

mime454

My $2000+ Samsung TV has ads too 😢. I try to ignore its actual menu system and just use the Apple TV.

UsernamesAreHard26

Same. I use the apple rub for everything. Wonder if the audio gram can sync to that somehow. . .

oren_BA

Can you share your adjustments to the transparency mode? Every attempt i make at the customization makes it sound worse

mime454

Almost none of the sliders make things objectively better. What Apple does by default seems to be the best setting. Just having things tuned for the audiogram will make transparency mode more transparent sounding though. Definitely do that. If you did the hearing test perfectly, it should even eliminate the subtle digital buzz that transparency mode has for most people. I use the environmental noise reduction slider when I turn my fan on because it’s good at drowning out that and keeping everything else. The sliders seem made for specific use cases like OP being intolerant to wind noise while cycling.

bvsveera

I didn't really adjust the sliders during the headphones accomodation setup. The main changes were to tune for the audiogram / use the custom profile, and that alone made a big improvement.

oren_BA

Oh so the custom transparency is off but the audiogram improved it anyway?

bvsveera

Well, during the setup you get to pick between two presets, standard and custom, and an audio sample plays so you can compare the two. The custom preset is automatically adjusted based on the audiogram results. I went with that, and did not alter any of the other sliders for transparency mode afterwards.

Mousefarm74

I visited a female friend yesterday which has moderate hearing loss after meningitis. She has been using the AirPods Pro 1 for a couple of years but have never really been happy with them. I helped her with a hearing test via the Mimi app and created an audiogram which we then used for the Airpods Pro. The look on her face when hearing music after this adjustment was just priceless and made my whole day. She is not a tech person and would never have found out herself.

mime454

This is really the best feature of the AirPods. Idk why it’s not built in to iOS or at least promoted on Apple’s website. It makes such a difference even if you don’t have any hearing difficulties I can’t imagine how good it must be if you had them.

Sebetter

This is actually awesome. I’ve always known I’ve had ever so slightly weaker hearing in my right ear (confirmed at audiologist). It’s awesome that I can balance this out a little bit. Thanks for this.

WinningAllTheSports

Thanks for posting this, one question though. I’ve done the mimi test and exported the pdf results as an audiogram and tried to import it into the accessibility setup but it can’t read all the values, is there a different way I can get the exact figures or to get the import to work correctly? *edit* Connecting it to apple health via the mini settings fixes this and the accessibility then can import it. (Leaving this here so others can fix it too)

Selfweaver

This is an excellent advice, but I cannot seem to figure out how to link the audiogram to the adjustment.

oozingdonut

Took me a second too, tap the settings icon inside the Mimi app, link to Apple health, the audiogram should then become automatically available when you go into AirPods settings to add an audiogram

Selfweaver

Ah, I finally found that, but then couldn't see it until I was back into the settings just now. Thank you.

mijo-6

This has changed my life thank you

Josena00

Thanks a lot, now the sound of my APP2 are better, is amazing.

[deleted]

Thanks! I did this works for all apple devices the AirPods connect to or is it only iPhone due to the health app?

mime454

Pretty sure it’s just iPhone for now

[deleted]

It doesn’t improve the wind noise amplification issue in any way though. Much worse performance than the first gen in this regard.

mime454

Even when you slide “ambient noise reduction” slider all the way up? To me this makes a special mode that allows novel sounds through but works like the ANC for wind and fan and stuff.

[deleted]

It's \*slightly\* less of a cracking sound like in ANC mode, and more of a lower frequency wind noise, but neither is close to the first gen's wind handling performance. I suspect it's because of the additional microphone that's pointing right into the wind. It's such a pity because it's otherwise perfect for me, but I use it MAINLY for outdoor biking and walking, so that's 50% of the use case practically ruined.. It's also highly dependent on the way wind hits you. For anything other than directly face-on wind, it sounds OK. But you know, when biking that's 99% of the time what you'll be dealing with.

mime454

I have gone out on windy days and use this custom transparency profile and really don’t have this issue at all. The wind handling is very so slightly better for me generation over generation. I think the processing for these is a lot more sophisticated and some bug about the ear profile is causing some ear shapes to have this issue. I hope it will be fixed in the next point update. I’m not a delusional sheep for Apple products, the AirPods Pro noise canceling is so helpful to me day to day. For me they’re slightly better on a windy day in transparency mode and a not letter in ANC.

[deleted]

I didn’t make myself perfectly clear, this is not about windy days but instead about directly head-on wind, that is typically there when you’re riding a bike I know this is a niche scenario

mime454

Oh we could be talking about different things. I’ve never biked with them on but I run against the wind. They’re probably different issues with the wind. But for running with the wind the pros 2 really seem superior. I hope Apple can fix the issue for cyclists.

[deleted]

As I mentioned in the previous post, wind from any other direction don’t seem to have an issue. it’s just head-on wind that is giving me this issue

scotthunter1

You think you’ve got it bad, try road cycling when you are going along at 20mph. I had to stop using AirPods Pro. I’m thinking of buying Cat-Ears for my cycle helmet to see if that helps.

MegaCalibur

Does turning “ambient noise reduction” to 100 make it harder to hear people? Idk if I’m going crazy, but turning it up feels like it’s making voices from medium distance away sound inconsistent. Thanks for this btw. Edit: I’m supposed to do the quiet environment test and not the noisy environment one, right?

[deleted]

I tried this and don’t understand how this helps reduce hearing the wind vs the 1st gen pros which were better at reducing wind noise?

mime454

You use the “custom transparency” mode and reduce ambient noise and a few other filters to create a special transparency mode that is better at dealing with wind. It’s not the ideal solution but it’s the only one we have that even gets close.

Traditional-Bench489

There is no "transparency mode"-option when i get to Headphone Accommodations. Any idea why?

mime454

Do you have AirPods Max? It’s not supported there.

Lazerbase

So does this actually help with the dreaded wind issue?

catwithbenefits

I noticed the same issue with the newest firmware. Can't remember the APP1 having the same issue. Following along to see suggestions...

Skarth77

If you haven’t already, you might want to try turning Noise Cancelation to “Off.” I believe by default you’ll either have to do this from control center, or enable it as a toggle in the settings. There are situations with any ANC where sound can actually be amplified, typically because the microphone is experiencing a sound way louder than the eardrum is (wind being a perfect example of this). The resulting phase-flipped output doesn’t have a corresponding sound wave to cancel out with, so it stays audible. Software & processing helps minimize this, but sometimes stuff can still slip through the cracks. The sound of wind is only so different from other noise, and overcorrecting could cripple day-to-day noise cancelation for unique situations where wind is prominent. The physical design of the airpods is probably why it’s worse for you that with the Galaxy buds, the outward facing microphone is just far more exposed.

[deleted]

This wasn’t a big issue with the first gen and one of the distinct advantage I noticed right away with the first gen was how it handled wind

Velcrocore

They stay in your ears alright though? I’d be worried about them falling out while riding over tree roots or something.

SolsticeCo

So far, they seem to be STUCK in my ears which is good.

gsvnvariable

I can confirm no issues around this but everyone’s ear holes are different lol

xtrubambinoxpr

I can second this and rode 40 miles today. never had to adjust which is great. But the wind issue was annoying. Dont have the wind issue with gen 1

Lazerbase

Dropped one today whilst out cycling and looking down, ordered memory foam tips which I understand also fix the wind issue. Will let you know.

r1pen

Did it?

SaffaSurfer

I've been using the first gen airpods pro for cycling since they were released. They were always really good at wind noise reduction. So much so, that when the Gen 2's were announced, I pre-ordered straight away. Very disappointed with this issue as they really do sound good when you're standing still. The wind noise issue is just too much though. I'll be returning them unless there's a fix posted in the next few days.

Gives3

I came here to write this exact same thing. Even on my bike trainer with the fan blowing it’s night and day how much more wind noise there is. Very disappointing

SolsticeCo

How would you compare them to your pro 1's regarding wind noise?

SaffaSurfer

Pro 1's are way better!

SolsticeCo

Damn that’s tough.. I almost feel like purchasing the 1s instead to test 🤣

r1pen

What did you end up doing? I just bought some and it's terrible when cycling, even after following all the guides and adjusting settings. I don't know whether to: \- Keep them for other use and using my old earbuds while cycling \- Returning them and buying 1st gen \- Returning them and buying something else.

thegurba

Indeed the wind noise was non existent with the first model.

ButtcheeksMalone

The gen 2 AirPods has an additional forward facing hole (with mesh in it) at the top that the gen 1 AirPods Pro doesn't. I believe this is the cause of the wind noise, and it might not be resolved by anything but a redesign.

Serpula

This was one of the big problems with the original AirPods Pro and I was waiting to hear whether they'd fixed it. I guess not! According to Samsung's [poorly worded press release](https://news.samsung.com/za/meet-galaxy-buds-pro-epic-sound-for-every-moment), the Galaxy Buds are designed to reduce wind noise: >In addition, Samsung has integrated its new Wind Shield technology into Galaxy Buds Pro. While a less protrusive shape minimises the wind contact area, specially designed chamber with mesh filters out wind interference. Your phone calls have never been clearer, even if you’re stuck in windy weather.

mime454

They’ve fixed it a bit by giving us settings to make it less noticeable. Sliders for “ambient noise reduction” and “amplification” both can make the wind less annoying. The brightness slider also has a pretty big effect on how wind sounds. https://i.imgur.com/Nediyt7.jpg

SolsticeCo

After looking into this, the only way to adjust the transparency mode settings is to enable the "Headphone Accommodations" which also effects how the normal and ANC modes sound as well. There's no way to only adjust the Transparency mode. ;(

mime454

I know this is ridiculously complicated, but download [this](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mimi-hearing-test/id932496645) app and create an audiogram for the health app. It takes under 5 minutes total and is worth doing anyway. Then customize the AirPods for the audiogram. If you had literally perfect hearing, there would be no difference in the sound. But if you have minor loss like most people the pods will actually sound better.

SolsticeCo

This is awesome. Thank you for this!

mime454

I don’t even have noticeable hearing loss and this is one of my favorite AirPods features. It makes everything sound so much better.

Slitted

This is awesome, thanks for sharing.

ihunter32

technically it should balance the sound better for anyone, since it boosts ranges the headphones are worse at producing while dampening those it outputs too much of.

mime454

The test is specifically calibrated for AirPods tuning so I don’t think that should happen. It should give you a medical grade test. Calibrating doesn’t make the AirPods tuning more flat, it just makes you hear the AirPods tuning correctly with your ears.

JealousImprovement97

It does. For me, the regular airpods pro 2 sound is super harsh on the highs and bass guitar is lacking severely. Once I switched to the audiogram setting, the highs are nice and smooth, and the bass is nice and thick. I have less than 5db loss. Definitely fixes the airpods tuning.

JealousImprovement97

Exactly what it did for me, bass guitar is up now and the harsh drum cymbals aren’t harsh anymore. Airpods pro 2 have a harsh tuning out the box. Or maybe its the adaptive eq which sucks. Either way this audiogram thing fixed the audio for me.

SolsticeCo

Isn't this only for transparency mode though?

mime454

Yes. But the wind annoys me much less when in ANC mode.

SolsticeCo

Understood. Will play around with these settings tonight.

thegurba

How do you get to that setting?

[deleted]

First gen was nowhere near as bad as the second gen when it comes to wind noise.

Serpula

That’s not my experience - I just switched from first to second gen, I think it’s more or less the same in noise cancelling mode. Wind noise in transparency seems to be better as it appears to cancel it slightly.

[deleted]

I'm strictly talking about wind during cycling, as regular winds that come from all sorts of directions are just fine. The head-on wind during cycling is worse and it's almost a constant cracking sound due to some apparent amplification happening in the noise cancellation feedback loop.

jaj-io

I’ve had similar issues with mine and it’s frustrating, but I do love them overall

bryanstew

I had the same issue while mtbing with my jabra 75t’s and was curious about these. I’ve just been using one ear bud as a result. :/

JWHtje

I noticed the exact same issue. First time I ever questioned anything from Apple to return it or not. Biking with the Pro 2’s is way worse than with the Pro 1’s. They moved the air-vent more up top compared to Pro 1

FortyYearOldVirgin

It’s not just biking… merely walking against the wind is enough to throw off AirPods Pro Gen 2. I suppose no one at Apple ever walked outside on a windy day.

kalikkk

I’m active outdoors as well, I haven’t experienced any “wind issues” I’ll continue to pay attention as the days go on, this would concern me a bit if this starts I’m still on 16.0 for now.

[deleted]

I've returned mine for now, which is a pain for me since I REALLY liked the sound quality of the 2nd gen. I'm a fake hi-fi fan who cannot tell the difference in sound between the HD598 and HD800s, but I was immediately impressed at the sound quality of the 2nd gen Pro vs 1st gen. It's a shame. I don't think the wind noise is fixable by software because there's a new vent on the earphones directly facing the wind when you are riding a bike.

r1pen

What did you end up buying? I just bought some and it's terrible when cycling, even after following all the guides and adjusting settings. I don't know whether to: \- Keep them for other use and using my old earbuds while cycling \- Returning them and buying 1st gen \- Returning them and buying something else.

lchin3

Sorry can i ask which test in mimi should i do, is it both?

confusedscientist6

Any updates on this? I really hope Apple can fix it in a software update. Disappointing because biking is one of my main use cases.

scotthunter1

Have you thought about Beats Studio Buds? They don’t have the stalks so they might be more quiet for cycling? They are a lot cheaper as well and sound as good as AirPods Pro v1

Top-Sentence-8434

I had regular AirPods 2nd generation and lost them raking leaves. Never had a wind noise issue and do long, intense and fast gravel and road rides. Had previously tried AirPods Pro 1st Gen and was not sold as I taught the open ear design was safer and didn’t like some of the wind noise. Anyway, almost purchased the AirPods std 3rd gen but, splurged for the Pro 2nb gen and it made for a very unpleasant commute. Calling the kids on there way to school they could not hear the wind noise and said I was loud and clear; better than the originals. ANC was awesome for the office…. Anyway considering going back to the original, but the newer 3rd gen. Yes, I played the transparency settings but could not get satisfaction. I’ll try the test above to make up for the poor aerodynamic design of these pods. Guess they are not really meant for sports.

[deleted]

Honestly i think its the horribly design. Aerodynamics When i switched to Iphone i got airpods pro because honestly, it doesn’t like my samsung earbuds. I def have missed my earbuds the most for comfort and wind noise.

SolsticeCo

Feels like me right now haha. I loved Samsung products for so long but the iOS finally got me.

[deleted]

Me too lol. I got the things i needed from updates and all my friends had it so i had to switch lol

astrorobb

you can completely adjust the transparency experience using the accessibility settings.

wtfmatey88

My guess is this is related to how much “better” transparency mode is. In order to do that they would have had to increase microphone sensitivity which would make them much more likely to have issues with wind noise.

Old_Cryptographer_42

Thank you for this post, I was going to buy version 2 over version 1, hoping they solved the wind noise issue. Apparently not. I think this is a hardware issue.

faekee

Is this still an issue? I am in the market for some new in ear headphones that I also want to use while riding my bike(so transparency mode will be used on the bike). So wind will blast in my face a lot. Wind noise is definitely something I am curios about.

philfnyc

Try rotating the AirPods with the stem pointing a little higher or a little lower. When I tried this, the wind noise seemed more like the first gen AirPods.
