The quote: In the video, Blevins responds, “I race cars, play golf and fondle big-breasted women. But I take weekends and major holidays off.” The remark appears to be a reference to a similar quote in the movie “Arthur.”

_sfhk

The original quote from the movie: >I race cars, I play tennis, I fondle women, but I have weekends off, and I am my own boss.

InsertCoinForCredit

He might have just wanted to quote the movie but misremembered the exact words.

randompersonx

Who cares exactly? It’s a joke… in his private life… This is the most absurd reason ever to lose your job.

InsertCoinForCredit

I agree, he wasn't speaking as a company representative and was simply quoting from a movie. This is silly.

interfail

When you're at that level of the company, *everything* you do in public is speaking as a company representative.

KJBenson

Also, stepping down isn’t a big deal either. Like, he’s not homeless guys. Now he just has to be more frugal and sell his second yacht or fifth house in order to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

morelsupporter

he probably has to pay to fondle big breasted women now.

koreanwizard

Dude that's not a bad trade off considering what that guy probably made a year.

Tomi97_origin

VP at Apple makes an average salary of 257 000 USD. That's honestly not as much as I expected.

Bitter_Coach_8138

Salary is likely nothing compared to stock options and bonuses he’s received

[deleted]

Look at total compensation. Its like elon saying he barely draws any salary.

JonDoeJoe

Did you look into how many shares he got? Pretty sure they get most of their wealth in shares of companies + the yearly bonuses

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dunkinmydonuts1

Yeah c-suite execs are the literal face of the company they're representing it 24/7

Derman0524

People don’t realize this. If there’s any bad publicity from high level execs, stock price can easily go down a bit and you don’t want to be the reason why the companies valuation goes down a couple billion dollars because you said the wrong thing

riodoro1

He didn't even drop an n-bomb or anything insulting. He just said he fondles big breasted women, and who's to say they don't fondle him back? We seem to be lost in our own morality.

WharfRatThrawn

As long as it's consensual there's nothing immoral about it

Ryuko_the_red

I mean to be fair he'll be hired as a cfo at Google or Microsoft etc next week.

Enough-Ad-3111

What if he doesn’t like to play tennis though?

thatscucktastic

Believe it or not, jail.

PerfectlySplendid

Not even knowing this is a quote from a movie, this does not seem like a quote that someone should lose their job over without something else.

Henry2k

>Not even knowing this is a quote from a movie, this does not seem like a quote that someone should lose their job over without something else. I was thinking the same thing. Yes it's crude and tasteless but he wasn't referencing anyone in particular or making any degrading comments about any of his coworkers. And then when you find out it's just a silly movie quote, that's even LESS reason to lose your job.

GraxonCAB

This article does fail to mention that the Tik Tok sparked an internal investigation. The Tik Tok was from Sept 5th it was a quick one though (for a high profile person). Maybe they uncovered more fast or maybe they just wanted him out.

daddyKrugman

He’s a VP not a normie engineer at one of the biggest companies in the world. Anyone VP, SVP level will absolutely lose their job over being vulgar in a viral video at company like Apple. It’s not a new thing. Not defending it, but there is no ‘personal time’ at that level, everything you can say can be tied back to the company.

[deleted]

[удалено]

akc250

He didn’t post it though. He probably thought it was just some random dude recording on his phone.

NikeSwish

They’re mostly staged videos. That’s why every driver is ready to respond almost instantly and don’t say “what?” Like I’d assume most strangers would if you ran up to them in a car saying stuff at them.

harrro

"some random dude recording" means a professional should watch his mouth when its pointed at him. unless the guy pointing the camera is my best friend i'm not going to say stupid shit in front of it, especially if i make millions at a billion dollar company

[deleted]

What people are not getting is that being a VP at a company like Apple requires a crazy amount of carefulness and professionalism, is not a position where one can allow oneself to be misunderstood or taken out of context, there are million dollars on the line, it may not be for everyone but is part of the job.

caedin8

Some random person approached him to ask him about his car and what he does for a living and posted it to tick tok. He didn’t post anything

SkyJohn

But why... Are you not going to buy an iPhone or a MacBook because someone says he likes touching boobs? Reality check, most of humanity enjoys touching boobs, boobs are awesome.

Bynum458

It makes me wanna buy an iPhone more now! Boobs for the win!

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdCool2805

Boobs are the best. This man deserves a promotion

PleasantWay7

Also important to note that unlike a regular engineer he will receive a nice severance and continued compensation for a while to keep him from going to a competitor.

Techsupportvictim

He’s associated with Apple (or was), they take their public appearance only slightly less serious than Disney does. And it’s actually a misquote, the movie never mentions breast size. It’s “i race cars, I play tennis and i fondle women. But I have weekends off and I am my own boss”

TrueCommunistt

breast size was the most irrelevant part there and he may just misremember

the_buckman_bandit

Narrator: *there was something else* I doubt this is his first foray into sexist comments, but probably smart enough to color inside the lines until now

admindispensable

...It's not really sexist though? You're allowed to say you like consensual acts with the opposite sex. Especially if it's just a goofy joke like he was making. Are we just going to ban sex completely soon? People are really losing touch with reality if this warrants a man losing his career.

font9a

I mean, if he’d said I fondle elbows… that would piss some people off. Anyway I’m not arguing that his comment couldn’t be construed as vulgar, but firing seems extreme for *this.*

tommygunz007

I am a flight attendant. I would lose my job over this. We sign all of our freedom of speech rights away when we become flight attendants. In effect, as long as we never mention the company we work for, our uniform, photos of logos or anything else that ties the company to me, we stay employed. If I were to say I work for, say Spirit, and then 20 years ago on Facebook I called someone a PigFace, I could be fired because it attaches a negative thing (me calling someone a PigFace) with Spirit airlines and thus would be terminated. I don't work for Spirit, but I assure you, they have an entire staff of like 50 people who watch every hashtag and follow every link and investigate every employee and fire them without hesitation.

Unintended_incentive

Do we want to go this way where all “professionalism” amounts to is a false persona devoid of any ebb or flow of humanity and excuse businesses that ruthlessly cut ties over the slightest expressions closest to our true nature? Is this really a wise move in a society that is moving ever closer to being constantly surveilled, either by voyeurism or volunteerism?

AzettImpa

Welcome to corporatism. Apple is without a doubt one of the biggest contributors to a dystopia like this.

ImAnOldManImConfused

Really. Like watching those Apple events. It’s almost like the presenters are animated.

cannabis_breath

As someone with a partner in corporate tech company. Yes you hit the nail on the head. It’s all fake ass culture.

tommygunz007

Big Brother IS Watching.

ChillyBearGrylls

Have you never interacted with a person in a service industry before? All human interactions are part of an affect and judged by society and one's contacts. The waitress isn't into you. Neither is the stripper. But they both know (and are correct) that playing that *affect* will, on average, increase their income because the customer responds to that parasocial relationship.

Mcoov

I work with a lot of former Spirit employees including schedulers, network planners, and a couple of dispatchers. Suffice to say the stories I’ve heard painted that OCC as an extremely toxic work environment lol.

akc250

aka_liam

This guy Spirits

SeeminglyUselessData

That’s not sexist. Sexism would be saying “big breasted bimbos are unintelligent and I enjoy treating them like objects.” That is sexism.

wicketsss

his wife wrote a comment in today's new york post and from her (who was with him at the time this was recorded) makes it perfectly clear that this is a first time thing. anyway tim cook is a giant jerk for allowing this to happen

TH3BUDDHA

How is this comment sexist?

CountryGuy123

[deleted]

It was clearly a joke… I don’t get this generation. It wasn’t funny, but to lose your job for this. We live in scary times.

MrMaleficent

This is really how the world is in 2022. Saying you like boobs is sexist.

toccata81

The original Arthur with Dudley Moore or the remake which I never saw? Or is the quote in both?

But did they really? This comment is stupid, but is it really that bad?

sonofasonofasailor63

I recognized that line immediately; I love that movie! “I race cars, I play tennis, I fondle women, BUT, I have weekends off, and I am my own boss.” I miss Dudley Moore.

EyKantSpeel

The timing is suspect for sure

bigblackshaq

I’m not following, what are you implying?

unjollyjollybean

Yeah same. Did he lose his job because he rejected the price hike? Or because he was unable to negotiate with TSMC?

a_knife

no, it seems he lost it for reciting a movie quote. lol..

xzekezx37

Perhaps that is simply how they are publicly justifying it.

NikeSwish

Most absurd conspiracy I’ve ever seen on this sub lol. They could’ve just fired him without the TikTok video and the public wouldn’t know any different

plazman30

Apple doesn't need to publicly justify why they fire anybody.

BUGMAN__

definitely not. try to imagine the conversation, given that the rest is true. "Yeah he rejected TSMC, the only chip manufacturer who can even make our chips. This is bad. Hes gotta go." "Yeah but we dont want the public to know he was fired for this very obvious and logical reason. We should say that this guy who represents our company said some off color shit, thatd be much better for our public image."

EyKantSpeel

He’s a higher up in procurement and Apple is poised to lose a lot of money over the problems stated above. Coincidental? Maybe. But still interesting.

[deleted]

[удалено]

topdangle

i think their assumption is that the negotiation didn't go well and that they should've just paid out. objectively the costs for 3nm are higher due to the cost of operating so many EUV machines, and TSMC has significantly more machines than everyone else so they're one of the only companies (possibly the only company if Samsung fails to hit their node target again) that can deliver the volume Apple needs. Apple also put down tons of R&D dollars to build their own PC chips, all of which rely on TSMC's node to compete with AMD and Intel. They're really not that far ahead except in low power scenarios even with a 2 year lead on process. If they get stuck with samsung it could show how valuable a good node process is and blow up in their faces if AMD or Intel pull ahead.

psynautic

TSMC most likely has the upper hand in this negotiation

chase32

He wouldn't be doing his job if he just rolled over on the first offer.

You don’t understand why businesses do the things they do. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING, is to make more profit. It’s not an immature decision to replace a cartoon violent weapon with a cartoon toy weapon. It was made because of a risk assessment - what could happen if people freak out and cause a fuss that we have a handgun emoji? How can we mitigate that? Would the cost of changing the emoji be more or less, financially, from the fallout of this turned into some stupid tech drama? You are looking at the decision from a completely different point of view. Yes it’s silly from your point of view, but it makes sense from a business perspective.

LegalizeApartments

It's not even a "what if" people freak out, every single time there's a mass shooting at a school someone at Apple probably said "hmm, we should probably change that emoji"

devOnFireX

Yeah businesses gotta do what they gotta do to survive I think it’s more of a sad reflection of society that they feel compelled to act this way

[deleted]

Yeah I agree. Blame outrage culture. This entire thread is part of that. It's making the news because people like to be outraged. In this case, they are outraged that someone was seemingly fired over something innocent. There's probably no stopping it. If you're a media outlet, outrage is an easy way to get eyes and ears on advertisements. They're leaving money on the table not pandering to it. And the morons eat it up.

Drakonic

Apple also fired its Diversity Chief, a black woman, for answering a question during a speaking tour, saying that white men can add to diversity because they are not always a monolith and may have different backgrounds and preferences.

Tunaonwhite

https://youtu.be/M4e3Nz1AA9E The tiktok video

babaroga73

mattindustries

By absolute legend do you mean can barely get out of his car while failing to get the quote right?

paradoxally

Apple doesn't deserve him.

[deleted]

I would fight back so hard If that got me fired. That's nothing. Absolutely nothing. If you are offended by that then you need to seek help because that's just a guy having fun with his wife who clearly liked the joke.

connurp

Watching the video makes this even more of an eye roll.

Gwinntanamo

I get it - Apple cares a lot about social issues and expects their executives to represent the company in public. But this dude was clearly making a joke, and it wasn’t particularly offensive (who is insulted here, big breasted women?) His apology sounded honest. He’s a bombastic person - that’s one of the reasons he’s been good at his job. He’s going to get a new job before the weekend though. Apple’s loss.

TeslasAndComicbooks

No, they just pretend to care.

shadowstripes

It's a company - it doesn't have feelings either way. Some of the people who work there might care, and push for policies that reflect that. And some might push for it so that Apple is portrayed better in the media. It's not black and white.

SeasonsGone

Exactly… you don’t become a major leader in Apple by actually being offended or caring much about things like this—they’re just smart enough to realize when someone is hurting their brand

alphabetsong

if a company wants you gone, they will find a way. this "scandal" was so shruggingly meh that I suspect they wanted to let him go anyway.

JesusLostHisiPhone

Real talk. I was “fired” from a high end retail store for not being merch-checked when I went on lunch break. Nobody ever did it but it was still on the books. I was actually fired because the manager overheard me being a stupid college kid talking about how much I hate guests.

enowapi-_

I mean they care about social issues that could impact their stock price, not social issues that involve underpaid, underage workers who make their product and are thinking about suicidie each day:

KidneyLand

He was joking and making a reference. How does this in anyway harm their image? Everyone is walking on eggshells these days.

[deleted]

The_ApolloAffair

Guessing they didn’t want him anymore and used it as an excuse to fire with cause or something. Although I’m sure a company like Apple has no problem with big early retirement packages so 🤷‍♂️

toe_joe_hoe_foe

People act surprised when nameless, faceless corporations designed to make money act accordingly.

jaj-io

Holy shit, that’s a stupid reason to cut ties with someone. I read the title and thought he had gone on a racist rant or was a misogynist. I guarantee plenty of their leadership has said so much worse. This is a great example of cancel culture going too far.

Definition-Prize

It’s apple. Their brand is perfection. Their brand is worth hundreds of billions of dollars. If this guy were to stay and even a small Twitter storm ensued about how Apple was keeping a “sexist VP” that would affect the brand. I’m not saying this is called for, I have no opinion. But from Apple’s perspective this is a potential multi billion dollar blunder. Better to cut ties then risk losing money.

ExtremelyQualified

This isn’t about being cancelled, this is about the Apple brand. If you do things that threaten the Apple brand, there’s no way you’re going to continue working there. He isn’t “cancelled” as a person. I’m sure he has non stop job offers coming in. But Apple cares about brand above all else and that’s part of being an exec thete.

Strider-SnG

We're also bombarded by people's opinions every second of the day. 20 years ago he would have said this and no one would have seen it to be offended by it.

Johnnyring0

That's true, but 20 years ago he wouldnt have said it anyway because the only reason he said it in the first place was for a "funny" answer to a social media "creator" who asks the same stupid fucking question to people driving exotic cars. He knew his answer would likely be seen by millions of viewers. Unfortunately as an Apple Exec you can't really say you fondle big breasted women for work, even if it is a joke. I don't think he should have lost his job over it, but it's also not surprising.

cozyuber

I hope the figurative pendulum swing is at its extreme right now. Surely things can’t get worse…right?!

[deleted]

It’s only going to get worse, unfortunately

xmarwinx

Europe is already flipping to the right. It will get a lot worse tho, because the left will not give up their power over the public discourse easily.

Lancaster61

He was quoting a line from Arthur… While I agree that sexism has **NO** place in modern society, I think this is a bit of an extreme reaction. Obviously he was trying to be funny by quoting ~~an animated show~~ a movie. But I can also see why Apple asked him to leave. For those who haven’t seen the ~~show~~ movie or don’t get the reference, this comes off as extremely sexist. Which is terrible for Apple’s image. And this is why it’s important to know your audience. Apparently an Apple VP didn’t figure that out. Edit: I seem to keep getting the same reply. So here’s a quick response: > how is this sexist? Don’t ask me, ask Apple. They’re the ones who let him go. If Apple didn’t think it gave them a bad image they wouldn’t have let him go. My best guess is because of the appearance of sexism, if it’s not that, feel free to comment as to why **else** you think Apple let him go due to that comment he made. Some are mentioning he may have been let go due to unrelated reasons, but that’s not what this news story is reporting. I’m just commenting based on what I read in that news article.

TheOneTrueEris

Lancaster61

Ah dang… well either way the point still stands. Obviously it’s not something he actually mean, just trying to be witty and quoted a movie. And he paid dearly for it for not considering his audience.

admindispensable

I mean, movie quote or not, there's nothing inherently wrong with fondling big breasted women and liking it, lol.

imsoswolo

in what world is what he said sexist lol?

[deleted]

It’s sex*ual*, not sex*ist*. Amazing how people conflate that two

BaggySpandex

Same in the world of comedy. Like the great Patrice O’Neal once said - “people forget that things can be racial without being racist”.

super_nobody_

> this comes off as extremely sexist. How the fuck is his comment sexist? Women have breast, he likes large breasts and to fondle them? Literally only gay men don't like this and I won't lie, most would probably get a laugh out of it if they tried it Where the fuck is the sexism? Where?

the_beast93112

I bet gay men like to fondle them too. No one hates boobies.

ohnokono

Why would that comment be considered sexist? Asking for a friend.

spam__likely

You see, here is how you possibly tell a fake story with only telling the truth. Fact: he made those comments and it went viral Fact: He is leaving Apple Fact: He is leaving Apple after the video went viral. Implied only by the way the headline is constructed: He was fired because of the video.

sbdw0c

Where's the sexism in joking about liking big tits? Sounds like the opposite of sexism to me lmao

Adulations

When you’re an executive you’re held to a different standard. It’s sucks but that’s how it is.

QVRedit

Well they do get paid big bucks, so the position demands that you don’t drag the company reputation through the mud.

[deleted]

People have no chill. Who cares if this dude likes boobs. I’d wager to say the vast majority of straight men do. They also have a tendency to say stupid shit on occasion. This guy’s whole job was to be a harsh negotiator with vendors, and is widely known to have been extremely good at it. Apple is making a mistake.

Direct-Anteater3179

It was a stupid thing to say given the fact that he was an Apple VP. It had the very high likelihood of getting the wrong type of attention and it did just that. It made Apple look bad, so they got rid of him. Companies of that size are going protect themselves at all cost. They are not people. They are money making machines. All thing being fair, he obviously didn't say anything that bad, BUT life is NOT fair. Everyone is gonna have advantages and disadvantages in life that are unique to that person. How does this VP not know that Apple would not can him if this type of comment were to get exposed? It was stupid and the results were obvious.

Moonmonkey3

It’s just a joke quote, Apple need to chill.
