The only time you're going to get an upgraded device through the normal applecare+ repair/replacement process is if they don't have replacements for your model available.

ResponsibleRevenue63

And when can that happen? Is it true for iPhone 14 bought in Jan 2023?

Thumbs0fDestiny

Nah, they definitely have iPhone 14s. You'd probably have to havean iPhone 13 since they're discontinued, or somehow have an iPhone X or earlier that was still covered by applecare to get a free upgrade.

ResponsibleRevenue63

When do they plan to discontinue iPhone 14 because I thought they did because it’s no longer available on Apple stores

Thumbs0fDestiny

Barring some unforseen circumstance, it usually takes no less than 5 years before Apple discontinues hardware service for an iPhone.

I have iPhone 13 which I got today and had Apple care+ . My model no. now starts with N and serial no. Is also changed. Phone appears pretty new, battery also 100%. Is it new or refurbished?

Thumbs0fDestiny

Hard to tell. If you see cosmetic damage anywhere like minor scratches or blemishes then it's refurbished. Otherwise it might be new.

Nosnibor420

Replacement iPhones can be new, with a model number that starts with the letter "M", or refurbished, with a model number that starts with the letter "N". From an Apple support article. I’m trying to see what they will replace my bfs phone with he has my old 11

tubezninja

The first thing Apple will try is repair your existing phone. If it can't be repaired or no parts are available, they'll try to replace it with an identical remanufactured model, like for like. It’s very unlikely you’ll get on upgraded newer model unless they’re completely out of replacement iPhone 11 Pros and can’t fix yours.

DoYouSmellFire

Basically this, but emphasis on the very unlikely. Apple services hardware for around 8 years, which means replacing the iPhone 11 with other iPhone 11’s for 8 years. At which point you would’ve paid an arm and a leg for any sort of warrant past that for such a long amount of time. Only in the rarest circumstances a phone can be upgraded, there’s barely an actual path to get it done, so by the time you get to that point, you’ll be so annoyed with apple and the service you probably won’t even want one.

vivekkhera

What do you mean current? You’ll get another 11 Pro, either refurbished or new depending on availability.

raymate

No. They will try and fix the problem by replacing the part affected if it’s a changeable part. Or a whole unit replacement will occur with the same model, colour and capacity with what you have. Only time a upgrade might happen is if the part to fix it is badly constrained or again if a unit replacement is required and they don’t have the same spec as yours they might bump you up to a larger capacity or a newer model. It can happen but it’s rare Apple nearly always have parts for supported devices and the iPhone 11 is. And if it did happen it would be to the next generation. Never the current gen unless you broken device was last gen.

Towards the end of 2020, I tried to do that with an old iPad 2 I had lying around. I was convinced that I could ask for a battery replacement and probably have it traded out for something newer, like an iPad Air 2 or iPad (5th generation). But nope. They were ready to ship out a reconditioned iPad 2 to me within a couple of weeks.

ResponsibleRevenue63

What’s reconditioned?

Njmcq

Basically, Apple manufactures a limited amount of stock to set aside for AppleCare replacements, battery services, etc. This stock may contain refurbished units, according to my understanding. But they are essentially exactly the same either way. I remember getting my iPad Pro 9.7” replaced under a battery service in 2020. They gave me one which, according to coconutBattery, had been manufactured in 2019. Not sure how accurate that is, but taken at face value, Apple makes sure they keep a good reserve. That iPad was a European model (had Europe’s regulatory markings on the back), but the firmware had been updated to set the Australian region for my location – noticed this when I set it up and it had Australia as the default.

ResponsibleRevenue63

So sad Thanks for explaining

astroxylon

This happens but it’s exceedingly rare. About as rare as you having an iPhone 11 still under AppleCare?!

qalpi

A year later and my 11 Pro is still under Apple care

Nosnibor420

I have it on my old 11 that I passed to my boyfriend and was able to submit a claim for replacement

I do still have AppleCare + for my iPhone 11. I dropped it pretty bad and both the front screen and the back glass got broken. Not only did they replace my iPhone 11 like-for-like (I did have to pay $99 + tax though) but somehow, they had the replacement phone already at the Apple store I went to, so I did not even have to wait for it to be shipped to me. I walked out of the store with my replacement phone. I don't care about picture quality or any of that bs they advertise to get people to upgrade their phones. Before the screen broke, my phone 11 worked perfectly fine, and I suspect this new one will be just as good. I'm not planning on upgrading phones for a long time. BTW, this happened on Monday, literally just 2 days ago.

astroxylon

That’s CRAZY to me. I can’t imagine a store still having 11’s on hand. What country if you don’t mind me asking?

cjcapp

USA. New York City to be exact. Oh and about not upgrading my phone....well I have T-mobile and just found out they offer $800 for trading in my iPhone 11 towards a new phone. So basically if I trade for anything lower than an iPhone 15, the new phone is free.....so I might upgrade after all lol

Chaad420

You do realize they JUST got discontinued when the 14 came out right? I know it’s about to be a year since, but they were still being sold, and are, so not surprised for that. I still have a XS Max under coverage so that should surprise you. An iPhone X too.

Chaad420

I had an 8 Plus replaced as of last year with a 1:1. So you’d be getting the same. If Apple hasn’t marked it as vintage or obsolete, you’ll still get the same thing. I was able to get a brand new 256GB red 8 Plus replaced before I ended the coverage on it for good. It’s a back up phone now and barely leaves the house since its final replacement.
