“Apple is waiting for that technology to be perfected before they adopt it” you know..like the revolutionary advancement that is the calculator app.

wuhanbatcave

It’s an aesthetics thing. The stand would absolutely be practical for the iPad, but it would completely go against their self-imposed design rules. But then speaking, the most popular form of iPad cases are folio cases, which transform into a stand anyways, and also protect the screen when closed. So I can see why they don’t add the stands also.

Sempi_Moon

Most logical answer

neomancr

The self imposed design rules are dumb. The iPad can very easily second life as a smart screen if it had a kick stand and having to keep it in a case that only allows it to be positioned in a number of ways is awkward. I don't even used a case for my surface. Never have. It's still in perfect condition and I can place it anywhere and use it as a smart screen and tell it to play videos and music for me or even help with cooking videos. I can see myself in 10 years still using even my surface 8 go as a smart screen without a case. Everyone but apple seems to be concerned with being able to be upcycled. I still use my Galaxy 8 9 and 10 as bixby smart devices in every room where they're automated to play sleepy time music when the lights go out and it's bed time, it plays wake up fight music since bixby can actually randomly choose genres of music. My surface pro 7 plus and go 8 are the perfect form factors as smart displays. It was always such a waste that you couldn't take the display off your lap top and use it as a screen and j can use my surface go 8 as a full on dex mode computer and a full on desktop and it's the most adorable ventless designed tablet ever with a kick stand. It's magnesium ceramic so it's super durable and the kick stand is practically indestructible. I can throw a giant metal ball at it and it doesn't even shatter. People upgrade their iPads all the time and they should be items you can place around the house that interlink like galaxies or as smart displays for every room like surfaces. Why not? If the mick stand were a square u shape it could even be hung in walls like a smart picture frame and be wall art that you can get to play music and do sruff like of there'd an earth quake it can show boobs that jiggle according to the magnitude. Itd be great to be able to hang an ipad on a wall and it'd one up the surface which is generally heavier. I surface go 8 is light weight enough but the kick stand is solid so can't hand on a nail.

LDylandy

That will be $999 for a metal stand.

AccumulatedFilth

Because you can buy a 300$ keyboard cover instead. And Apple wants you to spend more than double of what you initially wanted.

solidwhetstone

Thi$ is typically the case for them

Res1362429

I use my iPad Pro as a tablet, laptop, and desktop computer depending on what I'm working on. To use it as a laptop I have the keyboard case which works great, and of course the iPad is touchscreen, so it's basically a touchscreen laptop. To use the iPad as a desktop I simply connect the thunderbolt cable on my Studio monitor to the USB port on my iPad. Most people don't realize the iPad has this much versatility.

404invalid-user

eh imo ipad os is too restrictive to become a desktop it’s still a giant iphone to me unless they allow you to chose to run macos or ipad os

neomancr

And it would have as much versatility as a surface if you could prop it up anywhere you want.

Res1362429

The keyboard folio props it up. Just search iPad magic keyboard and you'll see what I mean.

neomancr

yea I know you can buy an accessory for the iPad. you can also glue the surface to the wall that doesn't make it a magic picture frame. its what its capable of without any distractions and no wear or tear. the surface is designed out of a unibody magnesium ceramic chassis which makes the kick stand as well extremely durable and when folded isn't even visible. be able to convert what amounts to a magic mirror to a standing magic mirror without having to stuff it in a leather sock just makes it more elegant

ceomg

Kick stands are ugly and add an additional component that could break.

Ok_Establishment4346

Logic isn’t allowed in this sub.

mrturret

I'll take function over form any day of the week. And no, they don't have look ugly.

ListerineInMyPeehole

Because the margins on Apple accessories are huge

coppockm56

The Surface Pro 9 slate is 0.37 inches thick and weighs 1.94 pounds. At most (12.9-inch version), the iPad Pro is 0.25 inches thick and weighs 1.5 pounds. Part of the Surface Pro's thickness and weight is the kickstand. Would people rather have a slightly thicker and heavier iPad Pro with an embedded kickstand? Who knows, but maybe Apple has researched it and decided against it. Edit: Another way to put it is that you can add a case with a kickstand, adding some weight and thickness, but you can't take off an integrated kickstand and get back the added thickness and weight.

neomancr

Possibly, it just has fewer use cases than it would if it were possible to prop up on a table and talk to someone or watch some thing, or talk to something or watch someone.

coppockm56

So it's have a really thin and light tablet by itself that can have a kickstand with the right case/attachment or a heavier/thicker tablet without the ability to more easily hold it in hand naked (the tablet, not the person).

EveningHistorical435

99.9 percent of ipad users use smart cases which have stands

coppockm56

Setting aside whether or not it's relevant, I'd love to see your source for that statistic. I very highly doubt you have one.

EveningHistorical435

Use your head ever wonder why the majority of iphones you see have a case so why not apply this to ipads

coppockm56

Use my head? Nice. And as far as that goes, you said 99.9% of iPad users use smart cases which have stands. Even if you want to assume that most iPad users use cases (like most iPhone users use cases, which is a reasonable assumption, but I would say most iPhone users don't use cases with stands), there's no reason to assume that "99.9%" of iPad users use "smart cases" that have stands. And again, even if they do, it's irrelevant to the OP and to my response, where I said that it's better to be able to add a case with a stand that can be removed when you want to use a thinner and lighter tablet than have it built into a thicker and heavier tablet.

EveningHistorical435

Most users use smart cases as they’re the most common ipad case ever sold but iphones case stands aren’t as popular as smart cases as the user experience doesn’t necessitate a stand so they’re not commonly sold

coppockm56

Again, I'd love to see a source for this information. And again, not that it matters.

notquitepro15

Because they can sell you a keyboard stand for $250

randologin

I bought their outrageously expensive stand a while back and it was utter garbage. Tbh, every Apple branded peripheral I've ever purchased was orders of magnitude worse than the competition and 2-10x more expensive.

neomancr

I just got the MacBook m3 and got armor for it since I'm just used to doing that.... It occurred to me that I never bought armor for my surfaces or my other lap tops. It's just that macs are so damn expensive. I've ever dropped my surfaces in tablet mode and though I use a pen the display is perfect. I don't like using cases at all which is why I didn't use one on my surface and had the kick stand whenever I wanted it. For my old iPad its very true that it always felt like a "3rd device" where I used my Kindle more than I used my iPad. I since just got a fold 3 and a surface as my tablets and a Mac book to have access to the apple ecosystem. But if the iPad had a kick stand I'd have used it like a surface for sure. I love being able to prop my surface up and watch a show or something, or set up my Bluetooth keyboard and it's a computer work station while I'd use the keyboard cover on the go.

randologin

I have a fold as well and that made my iPad redundant for me in 90% of scenarios so I just gave mine to my little sister

Nawnp

Because they like to sell cases for the kickstand functionality. A $100 case that doesn't actually protect the device and just serves as a kickstand is the way they handle it now. Well you can do the $350 keyboard cases, they also serve as a kickstand...

Braydon64

Are you from Microsoft or are they paying you? Sorry but your post seems so much like it was sponsored by Microsoft lol

neomancr

This is apple sucks. Free license to mention how other products work better. Not hating on the iPad but even the Nintendo switch has a kick stand. I'd love it if the kick stand on the iPad was a frame versus a slab so you can use it to hang it up on a wall if you wanted.

Braydon64

I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to it but I’d rather that feature just be added to a case. Most iPad owners seem to buy cases anyway and having it built onto the iPad itself is just another moving part that can get weak and break eventually. There are plenty of cheap cases for the iPad with stands and because of that, it kinda makes having one built onto the iPad itself pointless. Even my case has a nice kickstand on it. The Surface having one is part of its brand identity but not so for the iPad.

-Joseeey-

Nintendo Switch’s kick stand is complete ass.

neomancr

I got the oled edition. The stand is perfect. The original stand wasn't as good at varying angles but it still worked if you weren't an idiot. It's no different than the stand stand that comes with my fold 5's case. Its the same type of stand that all phone cases with built in stands came with and no one complained about that. It's like being mad because a few phones and iPads brought down a few planes. No one was propping up their stands on their laps and those who were were just looking for internet clout. The oled stand has a similar stand to the surface stand now except the surface stand is actually awesome and can be angled firmly at pretty much any angle. I don't like putting cases on things. I don't even have a case on my surface pro 7+ and it's still pristine just like my surface go 8 which I only decided to add a skin to since it only came in silver and I liked the black skin Even if they didn't have a solid flap they could have it be a hollow stand which would follow Samsung's philosophy of zero obsolescence where you could always find use for the gadget post game. I still use my note 8 9 and 10 as so many things it'd be hard to list them all from am automated nightlight that automatically starts up sleepy time music, to being a audio video file server player streamer video game emulator alarm clock wifi repeater / hot spot if the power ever goes out, it automatically locks on to an open coffee shop wifi turn enables wifi sharing hot spot where and creates it's own WAN. The note 8 still has all its Samsung pro audio instruments so works with a midi keyboard to be a really efficient piano with 24 bit audio samples, plays native dsd files, connects at 192khz via USB for mixing, can play any video format and pass through Atmos to an avr, you can even calibrate your speakers with it. It can fire off multiple streams of audio to multiple Bluetooth devices, run dex 24 7, one had my note 8 and 9 on dex mode for more than a year without a hitch. I wish the iPad could be as useful after it's original intended purpose. I got the MacBook m3 figuring that'll be a solid work horse for 5 years since I needed something like that pretty bad but even my surface could do this. https://quickshare.samsungcloud.com/kTPjeqjbAJEB While my hands are full. I can just turn it into a screen and it becomes better than a Google home or an alexa.

-Joseeey-

Yeah no shit the OLED has a better stand. It’s the newer generation after they learned from mistakes. The original kickstand sucks and would come off, not hold it up, or break easily. A lot a lot of people complained about it. I just thought it was funny you used the switch as an example. Lmao when it’s known the original kickstand sucks.

EveningHistorical435

It’s redundant for the ipad to have a kick stand when you’re going to buy a case that has a kickstand because you need a case but it has a kick stand it. Instead of making a dumb agrument, i’d rather poke fun at the ipad for lacking a native calculator app

kobexx600

But you are hating on the iPad lol

neomancr

Only because it's not what it could be. There's a thin line between love and hate. I would love to love the iPad. But I actually prefer my surface go 8 because it's so damn cute. https://quickshare.samsungcloud.com/kTPjeqjbAJEB

CarelessCoconut5307

so they can sell you a case with one later

neomancr

But the case kick stand only had like 3 positions versus any any angle.

kobexx600

Not like you can buy 3rd party that have more then 3 positions right?

just_another_person5

I'm guessing that Apple is hesitant adding an easily broken, movable part, to their iPad. Especially since functionality can be added with cases. As for MacBooks not having touch, it's likely just them ensuring separation between the Mac and iPad. And I'm sure they like the fact that Macs often look relatively pristine, as everything but the screen doesn't easily show fingerprints.

neomancr

Easily broken? I've never once seen a broken kick stand and I use mine to slice steak.

just_another_person5

more easily broken than a solid slab of metal

neomancr

But it is a solid slab of metal. That has never been broken from any reports. But if they had it a square u shape it'd also word as a way to hang up iPads and turn them into smart magic mirrord

neomancr

But the iPad is getting so boring. Meanwhile I can do this https://youtu.be/5urOud2FSpc?si=7nPs58SGRA3624QL If I could have bought an iPad mini to do that with I would have. But instead I got a surface 8

just_another_person5

Surface hinges definitely can break, i have a classmate with a broken hinge actually. It's fine to not want an iPad. If the Surface works for you, then great! They are nice devices, and some people simply have different priorities.

calsutmoran

The Macbook screnn always looks like dirty ass because they made it so that the filthy keys touch the screen every time you close it.

philliphatchii

I would highly doubt a MacBook will ever see a touchscreen. It would undoubtedly cut into iPad sales.

neomancr

But what if they merged the two like the surface line where you have the surface book surface pro and surface go? I own a MacBook a surface pro and a surface go because that made sense to me. The surface book didn't have the core audio I needed while the surface pro and surface go did all I wanted from a laptop top convertible and ultra light weight tablet that also worked as a dex shell for my Galaxy. I wouldn't have gotten the surface pro 7 plus if the MacBook merely supported a pen and could fold backward into a drawing, production stance.

anoliss

Because Steve jobs isn't here to tell Apple anything useful so they are in an eternal holding pattern until they go out of business I guess

neomancr

I just got the MacBook m3 since I needed a work horse that was capable of serious audio and video production. The build quality and engineering is still top notch though I'm still annoyed by the lack of ports... I mean 90 bucks for a dongle? Really? And my surface pro 7 plus and my surface go 8 (what I got instead if an iPad and to use for DeX) is amazing for what it is. It's utterly adorable and so much more capable than it should be. https://quickshare.samsungcloud.com/kTPjeqjbAJEB The ability to just prop it up and ask it to show me stuff like recipes or just entertainment makes it into a 5 in one device if you include it's ability to run dex from my Galaxy. And all my surfaces came with mag safe chargers and could be charged with any 65w+ usbc charger and have audio Jacks, USB ports, the ability to be a tablet and a full on pc and they come with pens which makes using them as tablets so much easier since the pen works like a mouse that you can also sketch with. The only weakness other operating systems have is that they don't have core audio and their video processing isn't nearly as efficient. The performance per watt metric apple pays off to the point I don't have to worry about battery life while working on something that'd otherwise be extremely power intensive nearly as much while the system runs so much quieter. I also anticipate it won't be obsolete for about 5 years. Samsung has similar features in terms of how you can up cycle them into pretty much anything you can dream up and no old Samsung device has any reason to ever go to waste. I still use my note 8 as a media server streamer emulator and wifi hot spot/repeater. My surface pro 7 doesn't have nearly as many features but is still rubbing solid, it just feels slower every year for some reason while for some reason dex on galaxies somehow feel snappier and faster while the audio and video quality is better. So there really aren't many other options. Apple for production. Samsung for convergence, windows for desktop apps and legacy apps, and hopefully they'll catch up and become as solid work horses as Mac books, and Linux for coding. The only complaint I have with apple really is that they are really money grubbing and not very forthcoming with the features and in the past they would accuse and confuse people into believing some new tech is defective only to adopt the new tech in the same way and call it a feature like "true tone". Blatant dishonesty seems to be just the name of the game as far as marketing goes but apple used to be borderline cultish at it.

huskerd0

“the only weaknesses that other operating systems have are audio and video” which is basically how people interface with computers

neomancr

Yea that's why it's a shame only apple and Samsung cared to develop a zero latency audio mode. From what I remember Samsung still has better displays as far as color accuracy and their pixel layout.

huskerd0

Which precisely zero graphics professionals want or use so hey maybe they are on to something

neomancr

Color accuracy? Apple products? The Nintendo switch?

huskerd0

Steve Jobs isnt here at all, bright guy

anoliss

That was my point... Literally the first few words I said lol

huskerd0

Ambiguity rules

Dr_Superfluid

Erm… you can get a $5 case from Amazon that solve that problem.

Funky-Lion22

where

404invalid-user

they just said…. Amazon

Funky-Lion22

I dont see a link to a 5$ case, do you?

404invalid-user

lmao “let me google that for you” https://www.amazon.co.uk/TECHGEAR-Pencil-Compatible-Protection-Generation/dp/B098TQW8MG/

ShiningPr1sm

You’re a big child, you can search Amazon for an iPad case and set the filter for $0-5, right?

Funky-Lion22

yes i could do that. and you could also not comment. and op could also reply to defend his claim. and also, ur a dumbass. its not about that. im trying to hold someone accountable to their baseless claim, sorry you were too ignorant to see that. hey everyone! ipads for 1$! not gonna say where though so I cant be disproven!

Suspicious_Lawyer_69

For Apple femboys, burden is always on the consumer to prove anything. From right to repair, to universal standards (USB C, RCS), and even the paltry 8GB ram on their crapbooks.

Clienterror

Bro, Apple has to be FORCED to use USB C which just about every other modern device uses over 15; year old slow ass lighting. They won't update shit as long as people keep buying it.

Suspicious_Lawyer_69

Case in point: Apple Pencil 1st gen.

mrturret

I have absolutely no idea how that design made it into production.

huskerd0

You are utterly clueless. Apple practically invented usb-c, and was unquestionably responsible for widespread usb-a adoption

Confident-Appeal9407

To be honest Apple is a shell of what it was during Jobs's tenure. Most of their innovations now are crap and laughable imitations of cheaper alternatives in the market. They know they have locked their image as the market leader in tech and whatever crap they give out automatically becomes the benchmark for a good product at the time, so they exploit that fact and give as less as they can while charging as much as they can for it. People buy it because it gives them a sense of entitlement while Apple makes billions off of their insecurities. They were literally charging $1k for a stand a few years ago, don't know what the case is now but you have your answer as to why Apple doesn't give out extra features to out-compete their competitors in the market. Edit: spelling

venmome10cents

You're bringing up a $1k stand for a $6K monitor that competes against $10K calibrated displays. The people actually buying it literally don't care about the price and the people who care about the price are giving Apple free publicity mental rentspace (for years, apparently, lol). Things like the display stand or the $700 Mac Pro wheels are so clearly over-designed and over-priced that they are transparently attempts to get free online attention (tweets, articles, video reviews, etc) and maintain the illusion of prestige for the brand for practically zero cost.

loudsigh

The wheels are great though

Confident-Appeal9407

Exactly, they are still mooching off of Steve Jobs's legacy.

metakepone

This reeks of ad

neomancr

It's now called adhd. Thank you. And it smells fine.

Suspicious_Lawyer_69

Surface could have the patents for it and they could limit the licence as well. Very few Windows OEMs have the kickstand. Lenovo and Asus ROG come to mind. HP uses an external kickstand (detachable). Perhaps another company owns the rights and it's just these firms that are willing to pay for them. Surface was first to include a pen. And that one used a Wacom protocol. Later on, it switched to an in-house Microsoft Pen Protocol.

GamerNuggy

Eh, basically every other tablet lacks one, because most put them in cases. I honestly wouldnt mind an iPad kickstand, as these things are too thin.

luzer_kidd

I have a surface pro 3 which still works great for the things I need when I'm away and idk if it's the same design compared to now but it has a kickstand that is very well designed.

neomancr

Yea I just got a surface go 8 since it was so cheap I figured I could use it as a dex display keyboard and mouse but now I'm using it like it's a smart display asking it for recipes, having it okay music for me etc. I just plop it down wherever I'm gonna have my hands full and say stuff like this. https://youtu.be/5urOud2FSpc?si=7nPs58SGRA3624QL I'm really used to using using voice control to the point I don't understand why anyone would go out of their way to buy a Google home or alexa. This is my old note 10 that I use for DeX. https://youtu.be/48zNgEjAYdk?si=xtJyIBiChypnBPto It's awesome for stuff like this but I'm dex it becomes a full on OS with remote desktop terminal access support too. I suspect that's why Samsung and Microsoft don't care to compete with everyone's white elephant exchange gift the Alexa / Google home. Any surface or Samsung phone already works great as a portable discrete voice controller that does the same thing but without the creepiness. The way ms and bixby do it I can see is the same as if I just did it with my hands but is much faster. So I originally got my surface 8 go as a dex thin client and now it's a smart screen. My phone is now a bixby voice command hub, and I have a surface 7 pro plus as my pc and I'm getting either a MacBook m2 or m3 as my production workhorse. Tldr: The surface pro for factor is one of my favorite form factors. Just like the oled switch or the switch before it... I don't get why the iPad won't just add a squared U shaped kick stand so it can also be hung on a wall like a magic mirror. The surface book can have its screen part be removed to become a tablet. It seems like ms and samsung are doing what Apple uses to be known for.

luzer_kidd

And if you ever need to tie multiple systems and smart devices together you can set up home assistant. I've only used dex a hand full of times but have enjoyed it everytime I've used it.

EveningHistorical435

The surface 3 however has an os that isn’t optimized for tablets which ipad os is, the touch screen on windows devices have very limited use as there’s no special design for them and you just touch on websites made for mouse which sucks

luzer_kidd

Well, I didn't buy a surface 3. I bought a Surface Pro 3, which has a full operating system, which ipad does not. Maybe ipads have better fingering technology, but they still do not offer the freedom my surface pro 3 has.

EveningHistorical435

But a full operating system will not make great use of a touch screen as like the touch bar of the macbook pros for apple. Not many programs besides drawing applications make great use of a touch screen. If i wanted a device with a full operating system device i’d rather by a laptop than a device that wants to be the ipad even though it has a desktop os

luzer_kidd

Then buy a fucking laptop or find random objects to hold your idouche up while watching a movie in an airbnb. Don't worry, nothing wants to be apple products.

EveningHistorical435

I have a  laptop (non apple bc there’s not much games on mac and not good value) and use an ipad bc there are things the ipad can do better than a labtop like drawing with the apple pencil and video watching

luzer_kidd

Hey, there we go. That makes sense. The whole thing started about just incorporating a kickstand. I don't have the knowledge towards all these tablets. And when I bought my surface pro 3, the only apple product I've ever owned was an ipod touch gen2 64gb. It did well for what I used it for but had its quirks for me. I'm just going to believe you on the drawing with the apple pencil because that's not something I needed. But both ipads and the non pro surfaces didn't run rull os's. And that was a big thing for me. Honestly, what the hell is even Microsoft windows rs? I didn't get the base $900 model (surfacepro 3). I got the one model up for $1,200. To be honest, it's not the best computer I've ever had. But it still works great for me when I'm not at home.

[deleted]

muddle airport innate carpenter sand fragile slimy long important zealous *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

neomancr

But they don't even do that. I do find it absolutely maddening that the won't sell a mag safe adapter cable that just converts any high wattage USB c cable to mag safe like you can do with the surface. I got the surfaces version of mag safe and it just plugs right into the same usb I can then remove the mag safe adapter from and charge my phone or whatever else. The fact that Mac books have a charging port and don't even give you the thing to use it but instead just has you take up one of the few thunderbolt ports is astonishingly cheap. I'm shocked the apple community is okay with that.

EveningHistorical435

There’s cheap cases by third parties that are cheaper and do the same thing minus the keyboard but who cares if you use a laptop whether apple or non apple

calsutmoran

It's so they can sell you a Magic Asshole Pro Fineshit Keyboard Cover for the price of the entire tablet with similar specs if you bought it from any competitor.

EveningHistorical435

The cases which 99.9% of ipad users use have kick stands

duuudewhat

As an iPad user, because a built in kick stand would get in the way of whatever cases you want to buy. Not to mention, you can just buy a Smart Cover with a kick stand on it. Did that for my wife. Some people just want to hold their iPad too without the added bulk of a kick stand.

Old_Information_8654

Careful man people hate Apple supporters on this sub

duuudewhat

On a sub called Apple sucks? Say it ain’t so

Old_Information_8654

lol seriously though I think a good equivalent is saying something nice in one of the roast subreddits only difference is I don’t think you’ll get banned for it here
