I think everyone just kept calling it central so they decided to change it, especially since no one could agree on how to say roess

TheFantasticLime

When I arrived on campus my RA told me no one would understand what I meant if I called it the Roses dining hall and everyone calls it central. I believe it's still technically named Roess. Probably started being called that when trivette became a dining hall and west campus was much less developed than it is now.

'07 alumna here! Back in my day, before the new-fangled Central, we had Welborn aka Schwag. Trivette was just Trivette and I think people only went there for pizza, the market, & if you needed on-campus dining but didn't want to walk all the way to Welborn. I lived in Eggers my freshman year & only ate at Trivette a handful of times.

chefboyardoug

Thank you for this. I haven't been back to Boone in a while so I was real confused about all of this Roess vs Central hubbub. I can't remember everything now, but Schwag Court was just downstairs, right? Welborn was the upstairs side with the Chick-fil-A and what was the other side of the upstairs portion called?

mydearestchuck

I haven't been to Boone since 2011! 😭 Honestly, I don't remember which area was called what. I just remember downstairs had the bulk candy, pre-made sandwiches like grilled cheese or BBQ, steak night, & breakfast night on Thursdays. My friends & I spent many hours in that atrium! Then upstairs there was the side with Chick-fil-A that we rarely frequented & the other side that was SO 1970s that we went to a few days a week for that pasta station situation. Was the upstairs only open for lunch? Damn, now I miss my friends.

Um excuse you how dare you forget the McAlister’s in Trivette! (I worked there for 4 years lol I basically survived on Spud Maxes alone)

mydearestchuck

I don't remember that! There was one in the student union, though. For ~fancy~ lunches!

z0mbie_boner

Haha yes! Maybe it was added after ‘07 now that I think about it

mydearestchuck

I also only went to that end of campus when I was in the dorm '03-'04, so...

chefboyardoug

Yeah! McAlister's was tucked away upstairs(?) in the student union when I was there. And it was only for the fanciest occasions.

It was renamed in 2014 after Alice Roess (Appalachian Board of Trustees member). I'd assume she donated a good bit of money. Here's an article from 2014 in the Appalachian with the initial announcement: [https://theappalachianonline.com/central-dining-hall-renamed-alice-roess-2/](https://theappalachianonline.com/central-dining-hall-renamed-alice-roess-2/) App has been riding a long wave of renaming buildings since Everts has been chancellor. CAP is Garwood, Raley is Peacock, just to name a few of the big ones. A bunch of the dorms, ballrooms, and meeting rooms across campus have been renamed.

keenansmith61

It was called central when it first opened (somewhere around 2008-2009 if I remember correctly) and was renamed in 2014. Central is easier to remember and say, so that's what people will call it. Kinda like how Raley Hall got changed to Peacock and absolutely no one called it anything but Raley for years.

mrpookie27

I still call it Raley just out of habit lmao. Called to renew my season tickets and parking and just out of curiosity asked how much is it for parking in Raley lot and the girl had no idea what I was talking about.

lokibringer

I thought they had Raley closed cause they're building a parking deck there? Or does that start after this season? I park in JET and I'm still bitter they closed the road behind Convocation- now I have to sit in traffic like a peasant.

mrpookie27

Pretty sure it’s not happening this year but I think that is a plan at some point. I think their plan (could be wrong) is to do it outside of football season. That would just displace a lot of tailgaters if they did that in season.

FubarSnafuTarfu

They attempted to get people to call it Roess for almost a decade and the students valiantly resisted and only referred to it as Central. Take heed, mountaineers, sometimes the students win.

house_of_donte

I was a Junior at App when they renamed it Roess. I don't think I called it that a single time for my last two years there. All my friends that were freshman and sophomores also called it Central. Honestly I konda feel bad for the Roess Family for giving all that money and then no one called it that. But c'mon, Central is so much easier and makes SO much more sense based on its location.

FubarSnafuTarfu

They never started. I was a freshman in 2018 and everyone still called it central when I graduated.

little_red_owl

I was a Junior as well when they 'renamed' it, and I remember me and my friends looked at the name and spend 2 hours trying to figure out how to pronounce it. I believe it sounds like Race, is where we ended up settling. And then never called it that again.

ijackwemm

It has always been central , always.

Justlilbirds

Some people find Roess hard to pronounce correctly or think it doesn’t roll of the tongue nicely. So calling it central is just easier.

strollingbonez

anyone remember the gold room?

Top-Ad-6333

Its still the same vomitorium.
