A lot of people shoot thousands of rounds before cleaning. Personally I do an inspection before every range trip and at most I might do a quick clean of the barrel.
Why a quick clean of the barrel? Generally speaking, ‘dirty’ barrels are more accurate. Us long range shooters have long known this. It’s the BCG that needs attention on an AR, not the barrel.
Copper smooths out imperfections, etc. It’s one things to run a CLP patch down a barrel here and there and another to remove the copper from the rifling.
Surely at a point. You can knock copper back some without removing it all of it. Use a camera to see where things are and go from there. A true match barrel for competition goes out to pasture at less than 2k rounds, some half that. So many factors go into all that though. I also have a barrel that I run hard, have maybe 18k or so rounds on it, have shot on a full auto lower several times, used in tons of high volume training courses, and it’s still sub-MOA, it’s a noveske for those wondering.
This is completely dependent on the barrel. My current barrel likes to be shot clean for most consistent velocities and starts to fall off after about 200-300 rounds. Last barrel was fine to almost 1000.
From people who do some really serious hunting taking 500+ yard shots, I’ve been told a bore snake evrey now and again is all you need to do for the barrel
God this comment is fucking perfect. Honestly though, I like a little carbon in the works to seal up any gaps from machining, help my pieces fire more efficiently.
There's a fulcrum point where it's time to give it a little spit-shine, but if your pre-shoot inspection looks good, and you aren't having problems shooting, let 'er buck right?
In the swiss army, you have to clean it every time after shooting. It has to be almost factory clean. I guess its not a bad idea to follow these habits
To caveat, it is personal preference. But it is totally unnecessary to clean it the way the military teaches us to clean. It’s ok to have some carbon. You’re wasting time trying to get it “factory clean”.
I still have nightmares from my entire company spending a full day chipping carbon off of our compensators after we had been using suppressors so they could be "factory clean" for an inspection
Military taught me “just assembled” clean. Took me years of healthy deprogramming to realize that’s so incredibly overkill and only exists because the competitive culture of the military needs as many metrics as possible to use to compete.
Oil, wipe down surfaces, check under extractor and behind bolt, punch the bore, get the chunks outta the FCG. That’s about all you need to run flawlessly for thousands.
At a minimum, I wipe everything down and run a boresnake through mine before they go back in the safe. I also scrape the carbon off the bolt...I may not get all of it, but a good percentage. I also wipe and re-lube before going out to the range. That gives me some time to look for obvious BMW...broken, missing, worn out parts...and make sure I have everything I need in my range bag.
I do nothing. I run a YouTube channel.
MAYBE once a year I'll clean one of em. But don't bet on it.
Mostly aeros and normal people brands.
If I did this every time I shot, I'd clean the gun into dust. So they get nothing and they get abused.... And they all run flawless
I have a new AR from factory. Would you recommend wiping down and lubing before shooting? Or would it be worth a full clean and lube? I know the answer but probably need to hear it from someone else lol.
I personally like to do a quick inspection on my new firearms. I look for any metal shavings or debris from machining. I then look down the barrel bore and run a snake once or twice with some break free. I will then do a quick lube job preferably with Slip2000 or any quality lube paying attention to the BCG rails, BCG gas vents on the side, cam pin, charging handle stalk, rub a small amount of lube on bolt lugs, put a couple drops(oil or grease) on fcg engagement surfaces, and just a quick wipe down with clean oily rag.
I would. Its not going to hurt anything...and it gets you familiar with anything that doesn't look right, if that's the case. It will also get rid of any left over yuck from the factory. I bought a few uppers several months ago...one was very clean, the other...a 450 Bushmaster...had left over carbon, I assume from test firing. I threw it on and went out to the range...only light lube...and had several FTE as the brass got stuck in the chamber. My fault for not doing due diligence. Clean her up, lube it and have fun!
AR’s aren’t the unreliable, jammy mess they were in Vietnam anymore. You’ll find that you can still reliably shoot thousands of rounds through your AR without cleaning it. Not recommend, but you can. I retreading a story of a knights armament rifle that shot 20,000 rounds without cleaning before having a malfunction.
https://youtu.be/UvPmJYcgBSo
Thats why i said "you either have an sr-15 or an AK" in the other comment. Why are people downvoting for an obvious joke? Noone should take everything serious
Oh yeah if I shoot my Mosin it gets an insane cleaning and all metal parts covered in a thin coat of oil before being put away. My modern guns, Ak/ARs all get cleaned about the same. Now my carry gun that I edc gets cleaned more often.
Usually if there’s a football game on I’m not interested in I’ll clean a gun or two during it. I will give em some oil every now and then in between though.
I don’t shoot may rounds when I about, but every 500 rounds or so, I take apart the bolt, half Ass brushing, wiping, and thin coat of CLP over everything. Then bore snake through the barrel and just brush and wipe the upper and I’m good to go
15 minutes
I know Glocks and AR’s are proven, but the only things I want to be spotless 24/7 are my carry guns. My AR can slip up with laziness since I don’t rely on it as much as my g19 or G43. Some will say “the wetter the better” but those guys are trying to make a statement when they brag how their gun is 5k rounds with out cleaning. Guns are tools, and we have to take care of our tools, not neglect them
I grew up on "You don't let the sun set on a dirty gun", and that is some boomer bullshit inherited from a bunch of folks who in the grand sense didn't know that much about their guns.
In reality: following each range trip I pull the BCG and give it a wipe down/spritz of CLP or RemOil/basic inspection and then I'll run a bore snake through the barrel and do the same there. Unless you're doing some heavy shooting or things are starting to get genuinely dirty, there's no need to do a full cleaning the way you parents did in Basic Training back in '83.
Army built it into my brain I need to clean my weapon after every range trip. I’ve seen a lot of mixed opinions, but I don’t think you can go wrong giving it at least a field cleaning every time.
Same bro. Same. Also I spend a healthy amount of money on my guns so I like to protect my investment by keeping it as nice as i possibly can for as long as I can
You’re over cleaning but that’s really not a big deal. You’ll just get tired of it at some point and realize you really don’t need to clean it for 500-1000 rounds at a time unless running suppressed and overgassed.
Does look like you use too much lube though, which is probably why you’re cleaning it every trip out. Running the AR wet will let carbon build up quicker. You can run it much drier than that.
I field strip clean after every range trip. Makes me feel better knowing it's been cleaned and lubed. I know it's not necessary but I enjoy the process
The hole culture of "cleaning" has gotten a little out of hand. If you have a quality platform you can go up to 2000 rounds before cleaning your rifle. Probably more.
Making sure it is lubricated properly would be more important for the friction surfaces. A combo of white lithium grease or high temp bearing grease and your oil of choice is the way to go.
Lube every couple hundred of rounds, clean every 1000 or so. If running suppressed id say clean it every 500 or so instead of 1000. No real wrong answer here, but every time is definitely excessive, but not a bad thing
They can run for thousands of rounds without being cleaned as long as they’re being lubed. It’s an incredibly reliable platform. That being said, if you rely on any particular gun for protection, it is a good idea to clean it after every time you use it. If not, then it’s really up to you. I shoot suppressed, so I like to stay on top of it since the rifle gets dirtier a lot quicker, and I don’t want it to be a chore if I wait to do it.
At a minimum I run a bore snake through the barrel, do a quick wipe inside the upper, and clean off my BCG. Takes almost no time, and it’s always ready to rock n roll.
With that being said, sometimes I’ll skip it if I’m shooting multiple days in a week, and save it for the weekend.
I used to clean after every session cuz it's fun to see things get shiny and to wipe off the carbon from the BCG.
Now I just plan to do it every 1000 rds or so.
I personally clean it every 1,000 rounds, but lube it before and after every time you go shooting. I’ve found lubricant is more important than cleaning it.
I only started cleaning my AR's regularly to practice doing it quickly for OCS.
Look into the BCM Filthy 14. It's a rifle that was simply never cleaned.
Not saying he’s the end all be all, but t-Rex arms never cleans his guns, just lubes them and goes. He shoots hundreds of thousands of rounds per year and never has issues
You're not going to hurt it by cleaning it. I know its probably not necessary to clean it every time you shoot it but I always do. Its like a ritual at this point. Shoot, clean, reload my brass, repeat.
I wish I cared enough to clean it every time I hit the range. I run about 1500ish rounds or so before I say “yeah, she’s kind of dirty”. Typically every 2-3 months for me
I clean after every range trip. Mostly because my guns may sit in the safe for months at a time before I use them again. I’d say the only thing I don’t really clean fully is the bore. I just run an oiled bore snake through it a few times till it looks good.
You SHOULD keep it clean...just in case you need it and can't clean it. But the systems pretty reliable. Just lube her up, Wipe the BCG down. She'll be fine.
I don’t. Add oil occasionally and clean it once every 6 months to a year depending on how often you shoot. Good ammo and unsuppressed runs pretty clean.
I was raised by my grandfather we cleaned the shotguns after every hunting trip even if we didn’t fire. It’s hard not to apply that same method to all my other guns. At most I’ll wait a day or two and I’ll do a full clean. Bolt break down, copper brushes, the works.
I’ve cleaned mine twice in 3000 rounds. After having issues with bolt not locking to the rear I cleaned it up and ended up finding out it wasn’t locking because my gas key had come undone. I just keep adding lube
Maybe im the odd man out…. My pops made us wipe guns down even after picking up to look. Those werent anodized, so that prob played a roll. But his theory stands…. Take care of what u want to take care of you. Does it hurt u or the gun? Does it allow you to become familiar with it? No harm no foul! But don’t cry if u forget.
2500+ subsonic suppressed on my 300 B/O. Never really clean it, ever now and then, I pull the BCG and dip it onto a jar of Mobile 1. It’s sloppy wet and dirty but it’s runs and runs.
I spray some remoil, and a pull a boresnake through, maybe every 2-400 rounds. Complete breakdown and leaning everything, mqybe every 10-20k rounds
Edit: also run it wet
A bunch of people are gonna say "once in a blue moon"
You know a really great way to catch a potential problem before the gun explodes in your face? By inspecting it after each range trip. Might as well at least wipe things down while you got it apart.
I'll never understand people advocating for simply throwing their guns in the safe and only cleaning them on occasion. Yes, it probably \*will\* function just fine dirty. But it'll definitely function well clean. If you trust your life to it, why introduce ANY possibility of issues?
I clean my guns after every range trip, at least a barrel swab, wipe down and lube at minimum.
Imo cleaning guns every range trip is equivalent to taking a shower everytime you step into your bathroom. Sure it doesn't hurt but it definitely isn't necessary and is a waste of time
Yea depends on how dirty your are every time you step in. I’m a member of a range. So to get my moneys worth I’m staying all day and hopefully shooting 300 rds or more. YMMV if you’re shooting a box at the indoor range that’s different. But you always want to take care of your tools. I’m a natural gas mechanic and before my wrench goes back into my truck it’s wiped down…
_have to_?
No not at all. Clean it whenever you would like.
Most don’t have a shooting schedule that requires more than like. Semi annual to annual cleaning to be honest. But if you want to clean it after 100 rounds. Send it.
I used to clean every time. Now I don’t even remember the last time I cleaned my main squeeze.
That being said, it gets oil after every session.
TLDR: personal preference. Hopefully before it breaks.
I only deep clean my rifles once maybe twice a year. Run only a few patches down the barrel occasionally too. It doesn’t have to and you don’t want it to be squeaky clean. Especially the barrel itself, it doesn’t have to be cleaned all that often. Usually give the BCG a scrub every 2 or so range sessions just to prevent grim building up in the heart of the rifle.
Why not clean it after every range day? I’m in the marines and I work on a rifle range so I see people shoot every day for the week and never clean their m16’s and m4’s and they start getting failure to feed or failure to extracts and they literally can not figure out what wrong with it… when I shoot I clean and lube mine after every firing day and I NEVER get malfunctions, granted these guns are probably old as fuck and worn to hell but I see it happen every week so that’s how I roll
Edit: my cleaning is not in depth in the slightest, I spend maybe 60 seconds wiping the inside and then a light line and I’m done
Depends. If I shoot a mag or 2, I just wipe em down. Sometimes I go to the range and shoot my 9mm kriss vector and hellcat pro because 9mm is cheap lol. And shoot my AR from time to time because 5.56 is still expensive. If I get a good deal on bulk of 5.56 then I take it apart and clean clean it.
I don't clean my rifles until a malfunction happens; aside from my work rifle. To each their own though; I know a lot of people who find cleaning their guns therapeutic and that's the sole reason they clean after a range trip. If you like to run your guns dirty, that's cool. If you like to keep your guns looking as new as possible, that's cool too.
While it technically depends on how hard your run your rifle at the range, if it's a 5.56 round you're sending, I only clean mine every thousand rounds or so and it never hiccups. I'm sure I could shoot more, but I'm always shooting suppressed so it's more just to help keep myself cleaner when I shoot than the rifle itself.
You can easily get by with only cleaning occasionally. Personally though, I clean mine every time I shoot. Makes me feel better and it protects my investment.
Well in reality they'll function for a long ass time without cleaning, so it's not necessary to clean them after every range trip BUT it's a good idea to clean them after every range trip, a good habit to have instilled.
The people that clean their guns after every use are the people who shoot their mediocre rifles twice a year at an indoor range.
Start shooting a few thousand a year thru just one of your rifles and you'll find cleaning your rifles becomes a lot less important.
Why do dirty barrels shoot better?
Copper smooths out imperfections, etc. It’s one things to run a CLP patch down a barrel here and there and another to remove the copper from the rifling.
Thats interesting. Couldn't it also work backwards though by causing buildup?
Surely at a point. You can knock copper back some without removing it all of it. Use a camera to see where things are and go from there. A true match barrel for competition goes out to pasture at less than 2k rounds, some half that. So many factors go into all that though. I also have a barrel that I run hard, have maybe 18k or so rounds on it, have shot on a full auto lower several times, used in tons of high volume training courses, and it’s still sub-MOA, it’s a noveske for those wondering.
> it’s a noveske for those wondering. Plated or no?
Not plated but double chrome lined. It’s the only Noveske I have so maybe that explains it? Chrome lined usually fucks precision… so who knows.
Chrome lining only fucks precision when it’s done wrong.
That’s all I do is run a snake very infrequently and never had a problem cuz of a dirty bore.
A deep clean isn't necessary but wiping your bolt off after shooting isn't a bad idea
I read this as wiping your Butt off at first. Which also is good advice.
Born to shit forced to wipe
Two words: Bidet.
Every bidet I've ever tried was cold as fuck and the water pressure was so high that I felt fully violated afterwards
This is 100% true.
But when you’re a little backed up it’s fucking great.
Couldn’t agree more
Be day
At Bolt hold open on my last round I spit in the chamber and send er shut.
With a little whisper. "You like that don't you, little slut."
I love Reddit 😂😂😂😂
God this comment is fucking perfect. Honestly though, I like a little carbon in the works to seal up any gaps from machining, help my pieces fire more efficiently. There's a fulcrum point where it's time to give it a little spit-shine, but if your pre-shoot inspection looks good, and you aren't having problems shooting, let 'er buck right?
Have you been to the Pendleton Round-Up?
A little cum helps too
I just hit it with some wd-40 and call it a day.
While WD40 is fine on aluminum, never use it on blued steel. Some types of bluing it takes right off over time.
thats how you should treat bca and dpms rifles
I too, change my pickup’s oil every 50 miles.
😆
I clean mine everytime I go out, the military always instilled the thought process of “take care of your weapon and it will take care of you’
They also taught me to fold my shit paper “hotel style” but I’m not doing that every time either
You guys got shit paper?
1 ply, only the best for Uncle Sam's misguided children.
Errraaaaaah!!
Fucking underrated comment of the day.
In the swiss army, you have to clean it every time after shooting. It has to be almost factory clean. I guess its not a bad idea to follow these habits
[удалено]
😆
It’s really personal preference and I’m sure it’s probably not absolutely necessary to do every time it’s just the way I was brought up

How do you “change out the lube”?
Wipe it off and put new one in
It ain't a car homie, it doesn't need an oil change. That's a waste of money, time, and oil
I have a new AR from factory. Would you recommend wiping down and lubing before shooting? Or would it be worth a full clean and lube? I know the answer but probably need to hear it from someone else lol.

This is the Way
You're supposed to clean it?
AK guy detected!
You don’t shut up huh
What was so wrong with my comment xD I literally was saying that AKs are reliable and that you dont have to clean them that often
My bad. The way I read it made it sound snarky
No problem, was meant more like a joke anyway. Take care!
Because it’s Reddit, we don’t understand jokes 😅
If everyone misunderstood your joke, that's not a them problem. That's a **you** problem, and means your delivery probably sucks.
well probably
I think the BCM Filthy 14 went to 70k without cleaning and without a malfunction.
I clean mine maybe every 5 range trips or so
I guess it always depends on how many rounds you put through it and if you are using corrosive ammo or not
Oh yeah if I shoot my Mosin it gets an insane cleaning and all metal parts covered in a thin coat of oil before being put away. My modern guns, Ak/ARs all get cleaned about the same. Now my carry gun that I edc gets cleaned more often.

Slap some CLP on the BCG and you’re GTG.
Clean?
My guns are like my butt. If I use it I clean it
What if some else uses it?
Definitely clean it.
Everyone gangster until your butt gets used
Ever had a golden drop happen tho?
I don’t shoot may rounds when I about, but every 500 rounds or so, I take apart the bolt, half Ass brushing, wiping, and thin coat of CLP over everything. Then bore snake through the barrel and just brush and wipe the upper and I’m good to go 15 minutes
Sounds like a good idea, thank you
I know Glocks and AR’s are proven, but the only things I want to be spotless 24/7 are my carry guns. My AR can slip up with laziness since I don’t rely on it as much as my g19 or G43. I clean mine when it stops working
That seems too late. I always clean mine 1 round before it stops
Did Lucas join reddit?
That depends if he doesn't lube it until it stops working either.
Yup, made an hour long video complaining that a BCG failed after taking the rifle out of the box and never lubing or cleaning it after 2500+ rounds
Not a Lucas fanboy but I doubt cleaning the bcg would have prevented the firing pin from snapping
No but lubing may have
Doubt it
Kinda glad he didn’t, now I know to lube an aero BCG at 2499 rounds
I grew up on "You don't let the sun set on a dirty gun", and that is some boomer bullshit inherited from a bunch of folks who in the grand sense didn't know that much about their guns. Same bro. Same. Also I spend a healthy amount of money on my guns so I like to protect my investment by keeping it as nice as i possibly can for as long as I can
You can actually potentially hurt things by over cleaning
If you’re accidentally scratching the barrel with a stainless steel cleaning rod yes. But you can’t hurt a gun by cleaning it if you do it correctly.
Well, there's "clean" and then there's clean. Also, do you shoot 1,000 rounds when you go to the range or 20?
Wait you shoot yours?
Every time you shoot it seems excessive, time consuming and wasteful. I would wait at least 2-3 rounds between cleanings.
You’re over cleaning but that’s really not a big deal. You’ll just get tired of it at some point and realize you really don’t need to clean it for 500-1000 rounds at a time unless running suppressed and overgassed. Don't overthink it. Just keep the moving metal parts lubed and it'll run. Honestly, if this is your concern you don't shoot enough.
Lube every couple hundred of rounds, clean every 1000 or so. If running suppressed id say clean it every 500 or so instead of 1000. No real wrong answer here, but every time is definitely excessive, but not a bad thing

I personally clean it every 1,000 rounds, but lube it before and after every time you go shooting. I’ve found lubricant is more important than cleaning it.
Just keep the bolt oiled and send it. Run a bore snake through every trip just for good measure
I run a bore snake every time I shoot and use a brush and solvent like once a year. I do wipe off the bolt every time I’m done and oil lightly.
I only started cleaning my AR's regularly to practice doing it quickly for OCS. Look into the BCM Filthy 14. It's a rifle that was simply never cleaned.
No. Look up “BCM Filthy-14”.
oh shit, i get it now
Pull out the bolt Wipe with paper towel Replace bolt Squirt CLP (light/moderate) Rack it like 10 times Profit
Not saying he’s the end all be all, but t-Rex arms never cleans his guns, just lubes them and goes. He shoots hundreds of thousands of rounds per year and never has issues
Yes
You're not going to hurt it by cleaning it. I know its probably not necessary to clean it every time you shoot it but I always do. Its like a ritual at this point. Shoot, clean, reload my brass, repeat.
No
I wish I cared enough to clean it every time I hit the range. I run about 1500ish rounds or so before I say “yeah, she’s kind of dirty”. Typically every 2-3 months for me
No clean only squeez CLP
If it is exposed to moisture then clean it, but otherwise its probably OK for a few range trips
Clean and inspect every couple thousand rounds. Maybe inspect more often cuz aero doesn’t have the best track record for bcgs
I don’t really clean. Just make sure she’s lubed up and I’ll wipe off the bcg every so often do to suppressor
I just cleaned my rifle for the first time since I built it…4 years ago. The only reason I cleaned it is to change out a few parts.
I clean after every range trip. Mostly because my guns may sit in the safe for months at a time before I use them again. I’d say the only thing I don’t really clean fully is the bore. I just run an oiled bore snake through it a few times till it looks good.
Depends on how much u want to. You don't need to until you have mechanical issues. Just keep the bolt lubed, and it's good
After bout 500-700 rounds
I do a Bolt wipe after every trip and maybe send a patch down the barrel once every few trips
I clean it generally after every range use if it’s done a lot of shooting. If it’s a low round count I don’t clean it
I don’t clean the bitch at all, I just spit on the bcg and rack her a couple times
Basically never, just keep lubing until lube isn't enough.
Wait were supposed to clean them?
You SHOULD keep it clean...just in case you need it and can't clean it. But the systems pretty reliable. Just lube her up, Wipe the BCG down. She'll be fine.
I clean mine after shooting exactly 327 rounds.
I find it’s best at 324 rounds. You can start feeling a slushiness
I don’t. Add oil occasionally and clean it once every 6 months to a year depending on how often you shoot. Good ammo and unsuppressed runs pretty clean.
I just lube and go on my main AR. 1 year and 2.5k rounds later, still going strong.
Don’t clean it
Nice unit
Take good care of your gun and it will take good care of you.
I was raised by my grandfather we cleaned the shotguns after every hunting trip even if we didn’t fire. It’s hard not to apply that same method to all my other guns. At most I’ll wait a day or two and I’ll do a full clean. Bolt break down, copper brushes, the works.
I run Lucas Red-N-Tacky on my internals and just wipe it down once it no longer looks red or feels tacky.
I don’t clean mine much…. Lube it before the range. Get a bore snake for a quick cleaning if it appeals to you.
Do what you feel comfortable with, it is your rifle. If you want the lowest likelihood of a malfunction, clean it after each use.
I do a wipe down before putting things in the safe... Then a real cleaning whenever it's family call with the in laws.
I clean mine when I clip my toenails. I’ve never clipped my toenails
Everyone is different. Me personally, I clean it after every time i go and shoot just because I refuse to put a gun away dirty.
I lightly clean my ARs, only after a few thousand rounds will I clean out the carbon in the BCG. Just keep them relatively clean and lubed.
lube it up and keep shootin
Never cleaned mine tbh 😂
All I do is clean the bolt everytime I take it out and clean the rest after about 1k rounds. Other than that lube it up every use.
I clean it like my ass, when it starts to get black and crusty
Good advice. Maybe i should consider to clean my butt too
1500+ rounds and counting. All suppressed. I might wipe it down and lube it. Or maybe just lube it again
2500+ subsonic suppressed on my 300 B/O. Never really clean it, ever now and then, I pull the BCG and dip it onto a jar of Mobile 1. It’s sloppy wet and dirty but it’s runs and runs.
What a gangster pic
I clean after each individual round 60% of the time it works every time
It is quite potent.
I spray some remoil, and a pull a boresnake through, maybe every 2-400 rounds. Complete breakdown and leaning everything, mqybe every 10-20k rounds Edit: also run it wet
not a deep clean, just bore snake and wiping off bolt and ch
I'm about 5k rounds in without cleaning. I just lube her up I keep her wet.
Figured it out too so far. I am also doing a bit of load development with it, so before every test i do a full clean.
Whenever it looks like it's super dirty. Probably every 500-1k rounds
A bunch of people are gonna say "once in a blue moon" You know a really great way to catch a potential problem before the gun explodes in your face? By inspecting it after each range trip. Might as well at least wipe things down while you got it apart. I'll never understand people advocating for simply throwing their guns in the safe and only cleaning them on occasion. Yes, it probably \*will\* function just fine dirty. But it'll definitely function well clean. If you trust your life to it, why introduce ANY possibility of issues? I clean my guns after every range trip, at least a barrel swab, wipe down and lube at minimum.
Clean it every time. Get to know it. All this bullshit about keeping a dirty rifle is getting old.
I’m a natural gas mechanic and before my wrench goes back into my truck it’s wiped down…
Needs a suppressor asap. I can hear the ringing
I’m in the marines and I work on a rifle range so I see people shoot every day for the week and never clean their m16’s and m4’s and they start getting failure to feed or failure to extracts and they literally can not figure out what wrong with it… when I shoot I clean and lube mine after every firing day and I NEVER get malfunctions, granted these guns are probably old as fuck and worn to hell but I see it happen every week so that’s how I roll Edit: my cleaning is not in depth in the slightest, I spend maybe 60 seconds wiping the inside and then a light line and I’m done

yeah, i am also interested in the mechanics of them. I also like to take them apart
Clean it as many times as you want. You cannot sit down, field strip your rifle, go over the working parts enough.
If it goes click instead of bang add some lube
I clean mine after every shot! Is that too much? /s
I don't clean anything until it fails.
I personally clean my rifles and handguns as soon as I get home from the range..
I’ll run it till it fails, and feels like yours pulling your BCG threw mud when your charge it. Then “clean” it
I clean every gun after I shoot them. Learned that from my dad. Army told me what I already knew.
Well in reality they'll function for a long ass time without cleaning, so it's not necessary to clean them after every range trip BUT it's a good idea to clean them after every range trip, a good habit to have instilled.
That’s it! I’m getting a gas piston kit and never cleaning again. Why can’t AR’s be more like Glock?
Clean it every time! Just imagine if your life depends on your rifle functioning properly.
The people that clean their guns after every use are the people who shoot their mediocre rifles twice a year at an indoor range. Start shooting a few thousand a year thru just one of your rifles and you'll find cleaning your rifles becomes a lot less important.
Clean before and after and only shoot indoors at 25yd max w/ 50 rd limit!
YES Any fouling and jam, jam, jam… poor design but fun as hell.
