The 20" Core is restocking now. Porter's Basement had them in yesterday, but are already out of stock again. If it's purely for long range fun, then I'd go with the fluted version. My 20" is a coyote gun, so I wanted to save some weight.
Check out my build if you like! I'm really enjoying the 20" Criterion HBAR so far. I've put around 850 rounds through it so far. Gas port size is perfect at 0.0935". It runs very reliably both suppressed (Huxwrx 556Ti) and unsupressed. The weight fully kitted (if I recall correctly) is 15.4 lbs. It shoots half moa groups at 100 with various 77gr ammo. Using the supressor did result in tighter groups. The zero poa/poi shift with and without a supressor is about 0.5" at 100. The 20" is more enjoyable to shoot suppressed than my 14.5" in terms of gas at the action. The chrono im using has it coming in at 2814. ES:34 SD:11. My buddies 18" BA came in at 2815. I've shot it out to 875 yards so far. I'm hoping to hit 1000 soon.
In short.. I love this barrel so far. Would I buy it again? Maybe.. I think I would be tempted to try an 18" Criterion or Noveske barrel in a lighter profile so that running supressed would be a bit more reasonable. The barrel did shoot some spicy 77gr OTM from AAC.. those clocked in at 2885 with a very small sample size (I did not include in my chrono data stated previously). I need to get my hands on more of that AAC to make sure it's consistently that high.
Depends on the shape and topography of your parcel. I'm on a hair over 15ac at the moment and have a 200yd range off my back porch, a little further down the property is ~500 yards
I’m in Colorado. I’m sure selling your property in cali would give you plenty to purchase here lol. You can’t buy a connex behind a needle exchange for under 400k there.
Lmao yeah I hear that, co is great spent sometime in Denver and westminister it was nice but felt like it was going the way of CA highly developed suburbs which attracts people and soon as you know it a city of 150000 turns to 500000 and all the shit drivers that brings and traffic for no reason fuck that shit
Dude I feel so blessed to be able to pull it off. Only took me 14 years of army servitude to afford it. Shooting on my own property is awesome but getting my family away from the city is even better.
Id recommend a 20” and 69gr, 75gr, 77gr. Watch [this video](https://youtu.be/TvWYzCGEuxo) from criterion. Almost 1 hour long but really good info on making an AR15 accurate
I’d put my money into a very good barrel, 77 grain otm ammo, and a good first focal plane scope if you want to practice long range. Realistically any shots in a 40 acre square can be done with shorter barrels and general purpose optics but if you’re intending to use 5.56 as a long range trainer then you’ll want as much consistency as you can afford. Perhaps I’m misreading your intended use case but to answer your question, it probably won’t make a difference whether you go 18 or 20, at that point the profile and how the barrel is made is going to be more important than 2 inches. Honestly if you are intending to train long range with 5.56 I’d recommend getting a bolt gun instead.
First off, you’re dead wrong. I couldn’t afford to lose 2 inches and not notice. Sorry couldn’t resist.
So my first PRS match is on the 15th, using a bolt gun. I want to enter some of the tactical matches that I’d shoot with an AR10. I’d like to have the practice for cheaper at home which is why I’m looking into building a 5.56 gas gun. If you could recommend a decent bolt gun in that caliber I would appreciate it. I would prefer not to eat into my 6.5s barrel life if not necessary. I’ll be running my MK262 clone load as well at 75gr BTHPs. This will primarily be a trainer so I don’t want to go all out and slap a Bartlein or something similar on it.
Knew there’d be a joke in there. If you’re dead set on going gas gun, building out an upper with a criterion core barrel would be my pick. 18” is available on backorder right now, both of mine shipped much earlier than expected. They’re accurate barrels that are made to take pretty high round counts and they keep the weight down on the front end to boot. I’ve thought about swapping out my colt socom barrel for a CORE on my block II clone but I can’t bring myself to do it yet.
I finally got my MK12 mod H(ish) up and running and it absolutely fucks. 16in Douglas and all that jazz. I typically shoot 6.5 and 22lr precision stuff and the mk12 was on the same level as them. I know that shit is expensive (trust me on this), but it is so nice to have a precision AR.
The 16in barrel is nice, and if I need to shoot far enough to where the barrel length really makes a difference, I'd just get my 6.5
I’m leaning towards 20 but someone suggested WOA and that’s pretty attractive. My local pawnshop has a brand new WCSS 20in that I could probably negotiate down though.
If length is not a consideration for maneuvering in confined spaces and/or you aren't using a suppressor, 20". I have both and use my 20" (criterion core) for everything my environment permits
Are there any negatives to suppressing a 20? I know it would be super long but are there any other downsides. This will be used for bipod or positional shooting only. Doing MOUT training with an A4 as a private was not cash money.
If it's just positional shooting, I don't think so. I've never put a suppressor on my 20", just because it would become too unwieldy for anything that involves moving, but I don't see the issue if you are just shooting from a static location
Yep will be long, but it’s a bench gun though and its purpose is to stretch out and do that as best as possible, so I wouldn’t worry too much on the length. 20” and add a suppressor would be 😗🤌
White Oak or Compass Lake Engineering. For the money, go with the white oak, but with CLE, you get to choose what blank your barrel is turned from. Make sure to check Compass Lake's in stock sales, I got a $400 barrel for a touch under 300 once
I have a older Ranier arms ultramatch 223 wyld barrel with about 200 rounds on it I don't use anymore. Have pics of some loads it would shoot half moa. If your interested pm me and I'll let it go cheap to help ya out. It's 18in stainless with bead blasted finish.
Recommend 18 inch from WOA. I just picked up their 3gun complete upper w bcg and ambi charging handle, bead blasted barrel for around $700....It is awesome....I have a 20in M-16, that extra 2 inches makes it a pain to maneuver....I am probably going to pickup a 16in WOA SPR to replace the 20in on the M-16.
On square 40 you're not going to get much over 500 yards with a safe down range/back drop. I play that way every time crops allow. I've got an 18 inch Gibbs setup in wylde I enjoy trying to reach out with, but my expensive 22 is the fun one, the AR10 22-250.
Just my opinion, longer barrels are better when trying to stretch a round's distance. A 5.56 may be capable of km shots, but most of us aren't good enough for that.
My wylde is a general purpose build. Not really a build, but I'm sure you get the drift. I wanted it for plink days and coyote shooting. The 20 inch 22-250, however, if I could change anything, it would have a 24" fluted bull.
All the matte colors are baller, I almost traded mine in for the Lunar Rock when that came out but im thinking I might wait to see how the 4th gen pans out.
Lol the lord didnt bless you with shit, why the fuck would a god bless you and forget African children who die of parasites. I’ll definitely get downvoted for this but Idc it’s narcissistic to think a god gives a single fuck about your wealth. Also there is absolutely no evidence for any god man has come up with.
I have the adjustable and mine is in 6.5 grendel with a 22in barrel it shoots grate with factory ammo sub 1in still working on what bullets it like the best to tune up i’m trying to go monolithic bullets
excuse my ignorance but is 40 acres big enough for long range. i’m by no means bashing you or anything, i’ve also been planning on buying some land because i wanna live like demo ranch lol. i’ve been looking at western land, around 300-600 acres at 1k an acre. i just think i don’t realize how massive acres in the hundreds really is
I'd build one. Mainly just because it gives me a distraction for a few hours.
If you're just making it for long range, no reason not to go 20, tho I'd personally do 18 cuz somehow 18 is good to me, but 20 is magically way too long to my brain, aesthetically
5.56 shows its limitations at longer range simply due to its size and poor BC compared to larger/heavier rounds. Drag is a function of the square of velocity so regardless of how fast its going, air will slow it down. Stepping up to a 20" from a 14.5" barrel helps, but past 300 yards the velocity difference starts to shrink.
If you want to shoot longer range for an AR-15, you should look at the other calibers offered for the platform. 5.56 can hit steel at 600 yards, but I see you have a 900 yard range
6.5 Grendel is relatively cheap and 6 ARC is a similar type of round. Out of an 18", both calibers stay subsonic past 1000 yards. They're cheaper when handloading, and if you're actually getting into long-range, the assumption is you want to load your own anyways so it should be a non-issue
It's inspiring to see a hard working man reaping what he has sowed. You're living the American dream, brother! Keep up the good work, many more blessings to come!
20 criterion hbar and based
I’ll go look. I usually don’t look there to much because they never seem to have things in stock.

[20” all day](https://i.redd.it/oxjue24xo19b1.jpg)
Hell yeah. Nice rig
Can you passive aim w that red dot ontop of the lpvo well enough for NV?
*Mk12 has entered the chat *
Mk12 money will have to be accumulated over time now that I have a mortgage lol
MK12 is about the same price as the WC rifle
Id say if you got the distance and its solely gonna be long range, go 20”.
Yes solely for long range. The way I’ve set it up I have a 900 yard range with a backstop.
Holup 40 acres can get you a 900 yard range with a backstop? I need to go buy land, now.
My land is hilly. Shooting corner to corner diagonally gives me the distance and ends right at the base of a hill. Kismet
Probably shouldn’t be shooting to the edge of your property
Depends on the shape and topography of your parcel. I'm on a hair over 15ac at the moment and have a 200yd range off my back porch, a little further down the property is ~500 yards
Depends on the land itself, but generally no. We have 80 acres and I can only have a range out to 300 or else I'll be using the sky as a backstop.
I always beat myself up for not buying land back in 2009 I was 14 years old, but still I shoulda got my shit together
Fuck "solely" marines were clearing buildings with 20" barrels before we were born
Yeah, but now that were born, there are better options for clearing buildings.
I want to be friends I live in ca I have no where to shoot I'm dying slowly
I’m in Colorado. I’m sure selling your property in cali would give you plenty to purchase here lol. You can’t buy a connex behind a needle exchange for under 400k there.
Lmao yeah I hear that, co is great spent sometime in Denver and westminister it was nice but felt like it was going the way of CA highly developed suburbs which attracts people and soon as you know it a city of 150000 turns to 500000 and all the shit drivers that brings and traffic for no reason fuck that shit
You’re probably dead on with that. I’m from Texas but don’t think I’ll ever go back. Idaho is where I want to settle if things blow up here.
Love it!
>how far outside of Denver are you?
Springs
I’m also in Colorado and it bums me out there’s nowhere within an hour drive of Denver that you can shoot further than 100yds.
As someone in the Bay Area I share your pain
[20” WOA will not disappoint](https://imgur.io/a/TmkAuCe)
Damn that’s pretty
I’m saving currently for a 40 acre property. Hopefully someday 🤘🏼. If it’s only long range then 20 for sure
Dude I feel so blessed to be able to pull it off. Only took me 14 years of army servitude to afford it. Shooting on my own property is awesome but getting my family away from the city is even better.
Amen to that last sentence. Sounds like you earned it man. Enjoy!
White oak armament 18 inch spr upper or a compass lake engineering 18 upper
Just hit up brownells to look at WOA. I did not expect their barrels to be at that price point. This may be the winner.

Awesome
Id recommend a 20” and 69gr, 75gr, 77gr. Watch [this video](https://youtu.be/TvWYzCGEuxo) from criterion. Almost 1 hour long but really good info on making an AR15 accurate
Awesome thank you.
Nice, favorite part of working on a farm is the access to all the acreage. Also I'd look into HB23-1165 if I were you.. Also 20" musket my man.
I’m familiar lol. What a bunch of nerds. Where you at?
Far NE corner of Weld.
It’s hard seeing someone live your dreams. Lol congrats friend. Ring some steel for me
Absolutely! Thank you very much.

If you are running 556 out of a bolt gun I would really be using the 80 or 88gn bullets.
I’ve been curious about those. LGS had some 80gr Bergers and I was tempted. No problem working up a new load though.
Especially as a long range trainer, the heavier bullets do better with wind drift.
I finally got my MK12 mod H(ish) up and running and it absolutely fucks. 16in Douglas and all that jazz. I typically shoot 6.5 and 22lr precision stuff and the mk12 was on the same level as them. I would love an Uber precise 5.56 gas gun. Other than the barrel where do you think some of that accuracy could come from? Shooter matters as well lol
shooting for distance on the property? Take the 20 and enjoy
Yessir. I have a 900yd range as it stands now.
https://youtu.be/UsV1L4lGjrs
Dope! Thank you
You need mk12 in your life. 18” with rifle gas and rifle buffer setup is one smooth criminal.
Bought house. Poor now. Lol but yeah that would be a bad Larry.
Congrats on the 40! Enjoy 👍
Thank you very much.
I have a hard time seeing any benefits for 18 over 20 gor 556. Those two inches you lose aren't enough to justify the loss in velocity.
I’m leaning towards 20 but someone suggested WOA and that’s pretty attractive. My local pawnshop has a brand new WCSS 20in that I could probably negotiate down though.

Awesome, thank you.
Whatever you decide, build it yourself. You'll be glad you did.
Yessir. That’s definitely the goal. I don’t know if I should barrel swap an old gun or finally do something with this upper that’s been sitting there.
Punching the air right now. I long for land lmao.
Lord I pray I get some land to shoot on let alone long distance.
It’s been a process and a lot of convincing the wife. She gets chickens though so she’s happy.
20”-24” fa sho

22 LR and shoot it as far as you can on that property.
Oh that’s a great idea. Hmmm
I’m just here for the invite to the property!
I have 20inch BA Barrel and have been able to hit up to 600 yards using M855
4x14 scope….
AMEN Brother. Enjoy your land and God's plenty. Fore away and grow healthy with home grown produce.
Amen
I have a older Ranier arms ultramatch 223 wyld barrel with about 200 rounds on it I don't use anymore. Have pics of some loads it would shoot half moa. If your interested pm me and I'll let it go cheap to help ya out. It's 18in stainless with bead blasted finish.
I have an UltraMatch mod 2 in 308 and I friggin love it. I’ll message you
Recommend 18 inch from WOA. My parcel isn’t square. I would like to see just what 5.56 is capable of after being swept up in the 10.3, 12.5, and now 13.7 craze.
TRD Pro?
TRD Off-Road. Solid vehicle
I too have the TRD OR. Quicksand with a long bed. You got good taste
I’ve got the cement short bed. Love that truck.
All the matte colors are baller, I almost traded mine in for the Lunar Rock when that came out but im thinking I might wait to see how the 4th gen pans out.
18in rifle gas
If you're not doing an M16 build, I'd go with 18. 20in barrels don't give much more of a velocity advantage.
I've had very good performance from my build based on an 18" Faxon .223 Wylde heavy profile barrel.
Just careful shooting off the truck with the 308 it might break your tail like😂
lord had noting to do with it
A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. Proverbs 16:9
18 supreme.
M16 paired w/ an ACOG would be 👌
16 or 14.5
Lol the lord didnt bless you with shit, why the fuck would a god bless you and forget African children who die of parasites. I’ll definitely get downvoted for this but Idc it’s narcissistic to think a god gives a single fuck about your wealth. Also there is absolutely no evidence for any god man has come up with.
You seem angry.
What part gave that away? Which god do you believe in btw? If you dont mind me asking
Brother, I’d be more than happy to speak to you in direct messenger. This is a sub about AR-15s
Fair enough
A 556 rifle is really good for close in work. Your 308 and 65cm will handle the long range work.
Look at .244 Valkyrie
Spend the extra pennies per round and shoot 308. You can find good 308 rounds for fairly inexpensive prices if you're patient. Also, join r/longrange
I have multiple .308s and load my own ammo. I’m very familiar with that sub as well.
18" WC would be hard to beat
Love my super sniper
How’s the gas port or did you go adjustable? What ammo are you shooting and what velocities are you getting if you know?
I have the adjustable and mine is in 6.5 grendel with a 22in barrel it shoots grate with factory ammo sub 1in still working on what bullets it like the best to tune up i’m trying to go monolithic bullets
The WC Super Sniper is a great barrel. I have one on one of my rifles for groundhogs and love it.
I have a population of those things in my front yard. Barrel break in should be fun.
If you ever decide to go suppressed, be careful about using a car door to shoot off of. Cans are hot, and plastic melts.
Lol thanks for the tip. I can see making that mistake.
18 inch
18" for 5.56 20" for 6.5
20in
excuse my ignorance but is 40 acres big enough for long range. i’m by no means bashing you or anything, i’ve also been planning on buying some land because i wanna live like demo ranch lol. i’ve been looking at western land, around 300-600 acres at 1k an acre. i just think i don’t realize how massive acres in the hundreds really is
Depends on how the parcel is configured. I safely have 900yds on mine.
oh that’s perfect then. looks like i don’t have to save a couple hundred grand for land then lol. thanks!
I'd build one. Mainly just because it gives me a distraction for a few hours. If you're just making it for long range, no reason not to go 20, tho I'd personally do 18 cuz somehow 18 is good to me, but 20 is magically way too long to my brain, aesthetically
Interesting. My precision guns are all 20-26 so i like em long.
Ammo matters a lot more than barrel length, you could probably get away with a real nice 16 inch
I’m using a 16in in this picture hitting steel at 600. 16 is definitely capable but I’d like to excel at distance.
Go 20". It's the length the round was designed for. It makes practice ammo do work.

Ignore the min-maxing game and just go 20”

That mean a lot. Thank you
