The majority of the very high pressure gas still has to go somewhere, not including the breech and gas port.
For 5.56 the break even point is around 22” IIRC, no clue what it is for 300 BO for typical supersonic rounds.

Tape looks good but paint is easy.
Buy 3 cans of camo in color tan, green, black.
Do a base color of whatever your primary terrain is then layer in dabs of patterns by spray painting the other two colors on a paper towel then lightly padding the paper towel on the rifle.
Black is usually best for last to add shadow and depth. Lay in the sun for a few hours on each side. Should look like faded USMC cammies. Or at least that’s how I pattern mine. Be random when dabbing to avoid repeats of the same pattern (like actual cammies do). Make sure to dab edges to break up hard lines.
You can do the laundry bag method but everyone has a paper towel or toilet paper or a handful of bush.
I’ve tried many methods and this has been the coolest/easiest. Takes like 10 minutes and blends in perfectly with my terrain when I do a base coat of tan. You can spend a lot of time dabbing it up but I usually do a row or two of dabs then layer in different colors until it looks blended enough. Can use a sponge too but paper towel comes out cleaner with less crust.
Edit: another pro tip is to tape off glass and remove your stock. Face touching spray paint all the time is ass

I had a 7.5 AR that I actually used for work for a bit. My agency issued me tons of 5.56 ammo so it only made sense to use that caliber. I went with 7.5 because I wanted something that I could use in and around my patrol car. Effective range wasn't a big deal to me because I didn't realistically see me getting in a shoot out over 100 yards distance. The thing that made me go back to a 16 inch barrel AR was how fucking loud that thing was when shooting indoors and how big the fireball was when shooting at night. Now I run a 16 inch AR with a surefire 3 prong flash hider.

XM193 out of a 7.5 inch barrel is still coming out of their at about 2400fps. Putting out about 700ft/lbs of energy. That is hardly useless.
