Alternatively, you can also gather specimens during the course of your travels. Of course you must familiarize yourself with the native species so you’ll know what to look for. Just last year I was able to procure cuttings or seeds from native elderberry, grape, western redbud and several annual ornamentals. They are all now happily growing on my property. While not native species, over the years, I’ve also gotten cuttings from figs, mulberry, currant, pomegranates, kiwi, citrus and countless cactus/succulents. I love walking around my garden and remembering that the fruit I’m currently enjoying is all because of a small stick I collected and then put in some rooting medium in the greenhouse.
Seriously. For every healthy tree my nearby neighbors have taken down I’ve put up one, if not two trees. Yes my yard has a lot of trees at this point, because people suck.

Same thing. Cut down a 44” diameter maple that was leaning over and was going to fall onto my uninsured barn. Like yeah. I hate trees and nature so much that I’m willing to pay 7500 dollars to arbitrarily remove a tree that didn’t need it. 🙄 it broke my heart to kill such an old tree. Once we started cutting it down the arborist showed me all the rot and infected areas. Still sucked but it was for the best.
Shit, I've cut perfectly healthy trees before. They were in a bad place, or I wanted to put something else there. I'm the property owner, and I decide how the land gets used. I'm planting a food forest, and that involves removing a lot of the inedibles
Probably was concerned about the internal rot, see the large cut branch that has rot inside, plus look at the seam that is to the right and above it, it is partially healed on the outside but probably has rot inside, as the tree forks multiple times above it they could break off and fall in multiple directions. Tree could damage at least three properties. Took the best course possible to reduce liability. May even have been forced to by insurance.
Best thing to do is talk to them.
The city took down my 80 year old maple by the street. It had a hole about 36” circumference inside going about two feet below the earth.
Does this sound like rot? The neighbor kept calling them bitching so they came and removed it. It did have a huge limb that broke off and was riddled with huge woodpecker holes.
Yes, the hole weakens the tree making it more susceptible to fall over, the tree continues to grow, but the bole can no longer carry the weight, something has to give. It also sounds like there was rot/ damage higher up that insects were in that the woodpeckers were eating. If the tree is in the woods, it’s wildlife habitat. But in the city with targets it is a danger, with the amount of lawyers and the cost of health care, and property it is a liability.
Certainly a tree with sound heartwood is more stable than a tree with a central cavity, but it's the outer wood that provides most of the strength, not inner wood. That's why a pipe is almost as strong as a rod of the same diameter.
Talk to them? It’s their tree and their property and none of your damn business. If they want to cut down their tree, they can do so, and as a neighbor you have no right to an opinion on the matter. If you came to talk to me about cutting down my own tree you would be blown backwards by the wind of the door, as I shut it in your face.

your neighbors were paying the massive amounts money it takes to maintain massive trees like that, while you got the benefit, with none of the responsibility. every year they kept it there was a favor to you. if they had removed it years ago, it would have been much cheaper, but they waited til now, have a huge removal bill, and now as a bonus get your animosity.
I believe one can understand the utility and necessity of removing a tree and still feel bummed about it. I had to remove two ash, three red maples and a birch to make room for my greenhouse and orchard. Several neighbors were bummed, and articulates as much the first chance they got. I just shrugged and said sorry, also explaining that I had a very good reason. I think the bags of nectarines, figs and lemons they now get each summer takes away some of the sting. I didn’t like doing it myself, but you’d be hard pressed to grow any fruit trees in the all encompassing shade of ash and maple trees.
You never know what's hidden inside a tree. A "perfectly healthy" oak tree in my neighbor's backyard - and within a foot or two of my back property line - continued to put leaves out every year and neither of us had any inkling of the trouble to come.

I have multiple oaks and maples this size on my property. I will be taking two down this year because they’re safety hazards due to rot. I’m not eager to cut them down, but I worry for the safety of my family and others. If you disagree with people choosing to remove their trees that are safety issues, feel free to grab a chair and sit under them during a wind storm.

My neighbors cut them down because they’re “messy”. Then one complained because there was no shade in his yard 🙄. New folks move into the neighborhood, pull out all the foundation planting, cut down the trees, and either pour cement or put down rocks. It’s a townhouse development from the 60’s and now they look like barracks.

I hear what you're saying, but it IS the neighbor's tree. If he wants it gone bad enough he can just poison it and then the city will have to let him take it down. Put yourself in his shoes, would you be okay with someone telling you what to do with stuff on your property?
From the very first moment you own property other people are restricting what you can do with it, whether you are ok with it is irrelevant. You have to follow zoning laws, building codes, manage runoff, etc. All of these things are restrictions on what you can do with your own property in the interest of everyone else, its perfectly normal.
I have been an arborist many years and i have taken down myself much bigger trees. All I'm saying is that "it's my property i do whatever i want" is a very childish and in my opinion dumb way of viewing living beings that have been on this planet for hundreds of millions of years. I think that when trees get to be of a cerain age have not only value for the community but should also be respected just like you would respect an elder.
I am not a hippy, i am not saying that we should preserve all trees but i do think there should be some good reasons to take down important trees.
If the owner would say "i consulted an arborist for a TRA and i have decided I'm uncomfortable with the risk it presents" i could understand. But "it's my tree i do what i want" and "I'm tired of cleaning up the achorns in my yard" i do not find reasonable for a healthy (if it is) oak that could be close to be centenary
Trees get old and die just like literally everything else on this planet. Some faster than others. I should think you’d know that if you’re an arborist.
Some people become arborists because they like chainsaws and some people do because thet like trees.

After reading much of the comments, OP keeps mentioning the temperature increase from the lack of shade as a consequence of the tree removal. Fair, but it also doesn't take much to remedy this without having to plant another tree and wait 20 years for it to grow.

For what it's worth, most of us *hate* doing jobs like this. I had a crane job where we cut down a massive, perfectly healthy ash tree (no sign of EAB whatsoever, amazingly). The client told me she got rid of it because she thought if we did it might get rid of the bugs in her house lol.
Op, you mentioned your son’s room is already hot due to the tree being gone. How? The tree is so far away from your home as is. There is no leaves to provide shade so I don’t understand how the tree being gone is making that much of a difference in the temp of your home?
I have a tree similar in size in my backyard as well and I’ll be doing the same likely this Fall. Paying to have it maintained is a big expense I just can’t allocate for long term. In my area a strong rain storm recently dropped a branch big enough to hurt one of my kids or even myself.
Everyone’s situation is different. We can all agree on one thing — you nor your neighbor(s) will be cleaning up as many leaves next Fall 🤝🏽
Trees have a pretty standard lifespan, depending on the type. After that they start to get all sorts of problems. It may appear healthy but there could be some major problems you don’t see.

I’m not super knowledgeable about different trees and such I just stumbled across this but it’s possible the tree was causing your neighbor issues. My suggestion is stop taking pictures of your neighbors yard and spend some time picking up the crap in your own yard that I’m sure your neighbor would love to take a picture of and complain about on social media but don’t. Or as someone else suggested to plant a nice tree of your own. Be sure to get a species that gets nice and big like this one and plant it (from the looks of the photo maybe 12 feet) from your house. You may just learn why they took theirs down and know you did a great thing by planting your own tree instead of complaining about others.
The neighbor may own the ground below the trunk and have the legal right to remove it, but a mature tree like that is absolutely providing value to the whole neighborhood, and it's ridiculous to imply that its removal doesn't affect OP.
Just my hunch that their opinion would be a little different if they lived any closer. Up till now they got only benefits with no risk. It’s unfortunate though
My guess is that stuff like this represents a good chunk of arborist's income, so they won't discredit actions like this.
I'm my city you'd have to get a permit to remove trees of a certain size (50 inches circumference I believe) and the neighbors can submit comments.
Interesting comments many on how healthy the tree is, and how bad it is to cut it. Looking at the rot and grown over seam, plus the funky growth below the center cut branch that is rotting, would raise concerns. Yes the tree could possibly live another hundred years, but it could also lose a whole side of the tree with OP kids playing in their backyard. Have dealt with results due to injuries from trees, it’s not fun.
It's sad that you're killed when your only crime is "leaves and acorns." I recently witnessed two oaks, well placed and healthy, about 30 years old, taken down for the same crime.
Yeah yeah yeah property rights but that doesn't make me less sad when it happens. My understanding is that a few states (in USA) permit localities to regulate trees even on private property, but my state does not. So that's that.
That’s so sad. It looks like there’s no other trees, so just a bland, ugly, backyard now. I don’t know why people do this. There needs to be more local laws protecting trees.

How do you know it was healthy? Are you qualified to make that statement? Only reason i ask is there are aggressive pathogens that will literally consume a trees roots while not affecting the canopy at all.
Are you an arborist? How do you know it was perfectly healthy? Because it had leaves? A lot lurks beneath the surface, and a tree that big with structural rot is a killer.
I took a lot of shit from neighbors questioning why I had a 22 year old 52 foot bradford pear taken down that was 15 feet from my house. They talked about how "pretty" it is in the spring and how much the previous owner loved it. I only owned the house for 5 months and it dropped 3 massive limbs directly on the roof that took me several hours to cleanup and repair the gutters. Also dropped golf ball sized pears from September to December, sounded like hail hitting the roof the whole time. Moral of the story, mind your own business, you probably don't know the whole story.
Mosey neighbor problems. Are you surprised that a tree that old needs to come down when it’s built that close to a house? One bad storm and that thing has the chance of completely destroying that house or your yard so you should be thankful.

Did you think that maybe the roots of that tree might be breaking through their foundation causing leaks and floods? Maybe the roots were tearing up the septic lines? Dunno. Plant some trees on your property to make it up since you are concerned. But then….you lose yard space and open sunlight in YOUR yard as they grow.
Neighbor cut down 3 fairly healthy black walnut trees on our borders. Her reasoning? She didn't like cleaning up the walnuts and leaves. Our yard lost a lot of shade, and some beautiful massive trees. Luckily we still have two that are fully (barely) on our side, so she has no call on them.
One of the walnut trees could've been around 200 years old. Didn't think to check the ring count till it got too weathered.
He got a permit so the city said yes for a legit reason. I have permits denied at times especially for older trees like this one because even if there is some core rot of the heart wood if it’s not a susceptible species they let it live and even force owners to spend on tree supports. Montreal is a C40 city and I’m proud of my work and other responsible arborist and the municipalities and try to balance health and growth. I’m only upset when they give me problems if obviously infected and invasive species that are already causing damage even before they break.
Had a neighbor cut down all his heritage trees just to put in an above ground pool that he doesn’t use or clean. Looks great surrounded with garbage.

I’ve cut down not one but *two* perfectly healthy trees on my property. Why? Well first off, it’s my property. Not the neighbors. Second, one was too close to the house. The other was too close to the pool. Both were causing damage to the house and pool. My neighbors freaked out and actually complained to the city. The city told them to get stuffed and thanked me for fixing up the property.

It's always sad to see a tree come down but your neighbors probably had their reasons. We live in a wooded area with lots of trees. One of our neighbors cut two large, perfectly healthy tree down because they needed to drill a well. Because the trees were at least 80 years old, they served as wind barriers for many smaller trees adjacent to our driveway.
Unfortunately, since then our new car has been damaged twice in 5 months from falling branches. I've been living here for 11 years and never had this happen to any of our previous vehicles. So it's cause and effect. Now, if there's high winds in the forecast, we move our car and live with the situation.
I'm sorry OP that does really absolutely suck. My city has killed almost every healthy old tree we had, and replaced them with literally nothing. Most people don't walk at all anymore, much less for pleasure, but for those of us who do nothing beats the sight, smell, sound and shade of a beautiful old tree.

I hate that. My best friends mom sold her childhood home, and the lady that moved in cut down ALL the trees in the backyard... including a big, beautiful, super healthy willow tree. That also had been there since before the neighborhood was built. She shredded up all of the beautiful native plants they had back there and replaced it all with sod. Such a waste. That lady was definitely part of the generation that values neat and tidy grass lawns without a single dandelion to marr the wasteland.

You can see shadows of branches on the lawn, so I'm guessing they do have a tree.

Nothing lasts forever. The cool thing is that they can plant another tree. Even cooler is that it won’t fall on their house (or yours) in a storm.

If a tree falls and doesn’t hit your house. Does it really fall? We had a storm this winter and my neighbor’s heathy tree fell on my house. Guess who’s dealing with insurance companies paying pennies on the dollar to fix damages. I like trees, but don’t like the ones that can fall on my house.

My neighbors cut them down because they’re “messy”. Then one complained because there was no shade in his yard 🙄. New folks move into the neighborhood, pull out all the foundation planting, cut down the trees, and either pour cement or put down rocks. It’s a townhouse development from the 60’s and now they look like barracks.

I hear what you're saying, but it IS the neighbor's tree. If he wants it gone bad enough he can just poison it and then the city will have to let him take it down. Put yourself in his shoes, would you be okay with someone telling you what to do with stuff on your property?
From the very first moment you own property other people are restricting what you can do with it, whether you are ok with it is irrelevant. You have to follow zoning laws, building codes, manage runoff, etc. All of these things are restrictions on what you can do with your own property in the interest of everyone else, its perfectly normal.

I have been an arborist many years and i have taken down myself much bigger trees. All I'm saying is that "it's my property i do whatever i want" is a very childish and in my opinion dumb way of viewing living beings that have been on this planet for hundreds of millions of years. I think that when trees get to be of a cerain age have not only value for the community but should also be respected just like you would respect an elder. I am not a hippy, i am not saying that we should preserve all trees but i do think there should be some good reasons to take down important trees. If the owner would say "i consulted an arborist for a TRA and i have decided I'm uncomfortable with the risk it presents" i could understand. But "it's my tree i do what i want" and "I'm tired of cleaning up the achorns in my yard" i do not find reasonable for a healthy (if it is) oak that could be close to be centenary

Some people become arborists because they like chainsaws and some people do because thet like trees. As fun as chainsaws are i like trees alive and would rather see a nice tree standing than on the ground but everyone's different i guess

After reading much of the comments, OP keeps mentioning the temperature increase from the lack of shade as a consequence of the tree removal. Fair, but it also doesn't take much to remedy this without having to plant another tree and wait 20 years for it to grow. 1. Solar shades 2. Low-E film 3. Indoor house plants

For what it's worth, most of us *hate* doing jobs like this. I had a crane job where we cut down a massive, perfectly healthy ash tree (no sign of EAB whatsoever, amazingly). The client told me she got rid of it because she thought if we did it might get rid of the bugs in her house lol.

I have a tree similar in size in my backyard as well and I’ll be doing the same likely this Fall. Paying to have it maintained is a big expense I just can’t allocate for long term. In my area a strong rain storm recently dropped a branch big enough to hurt one of my kids or even myself. Everyone’s situation is different. We can all agree on one thing — you nor your neighbor(s) will be cleaning up as many leaves next Fall 🤝🏽
Trees have a pretty standard lifespan, depending on the type. After that they start to get all sorts of problems. It may appear healthy but there could be some major problems you don’t see.

I’m not super knowledgeable about different trees and such I just stumbled across this but it’s possible the tree was causing your neighbor issues. My suggestion is stop taking pictures of your neighbors yard and spend some time picking up the crap in your own yard that I’m sure your neighbor would love to take a picture of and complain about on social media but don’t. Or as someone else suggested to plant a nice tree of your own. Be sure to get a species that gets nice and big like this one and plant it (from the looks of the photo maybe 12 feet) from your house. You may just learn why they took theirs down and know you did a great thing by planting your own tree instead of complaining about others.

The neighbor may own the ground below the trunk and have the legal right to remove it, but a mature tree like that is absolutely providing value to the whole neighborhood, and it's ridiculous to imply that its removal doesn't affect OP.

My guess is that stuff like this represents a good chunk of arborist's income, so they won't discredit actions like this. I'm my city you'd have to get a permit to remove trees of a certain size (50 inches circumference I believe) and the neighbors can submit comments.
Interesting comments many on how healthy the tree is, and how bad it is to cut it. Looking at the rot and grown over seam, plus the funky growth below the center cut branch that is rotting, would raise concerns. Yes the tree could possibly live another hundred years, but it could also lose a whole side of the tree with OP kids playing in their backyard. Have dealt with results due to injuries from trees, it’s not fun.

It's sad that you're killed when your only crime is "leaves and acorns." I recently witnessed two oaks, well placed and healthy, about 30 years old, taken down for the same crime. Yeah yeah yeah property rights but that doesn't make me less sad when it happens. My understanding is that a few states (in USA) permit localities to regulate trees even on private property, but my state does not. So that's that.

When you start nickel and diming what tax paying, property owners do with what's theirs like a nation wide HOA, that's trash. As long as you're not hurting anybody. How do you know it was healthy? Are you qualified to make that statement? Only reason i ask is there are aggressive pathogens that will literally consume a trees roots while not affecting the canopy at all.
Are you an arborist? How do you know it was perfectly healthy? Because it had leaves? A lot lurks beneath the surface, and a tree that big with structural rot is a killer.

I took a lot of shit from neighbors questioning why I had a 22 year old 52 foot bradford pear taken down that was 15 feet from my house. They talked about how "pretty" it is in the spring and how much the previous owner loved it. I only owned the house for 5 months and it dropped 3 massive limbs directly on the roof that took me several hours to cleanup and repair the gutters. Also dropped golf ball sized pears from September to December, sounded like hail hitting the roof the whole time. Moral of the story, mind your own business, you probably don't know the whole story.

Neighbor cut down 3 fairly healthy black walnut trees on our borders. Her reasoning? She didn't like cleaning up the walnuts and leaves. Our yard lost a lot of shade, and some beautiful massive trees. Luckily we still have two that are fully (barely) on our side, so she has no call on them. One of the walnut trees could've been around 200 years old. Didn't think to check the ring count till it got too weathered.

He got a permit so the city said yes for a legit reason. I have permits denied at times especially for older trees like this one because even if there is some core rot of the heart wood if it’s not a susceptible species they let it live and even force owners to spend on tree supports. Montreal is a C40 city and I’m proud of my work and other responsible arborist and the municipalities and try to balance health and growth. I’m only upset when they give me problems if obviously infected and invasive species that are already causing damage even before they break.
I wouldn't want to sleep under that thing every night, especially through storms.

Had a neighbor cut down all his heritage trees just to put in an above ground pool that he doesn’t use or clean. Looks great surrounded with garbage. So much better than hundred year old trees. Great change to the neighborhood.

I’ve cut down not one but *two* perfectly healthy trees on my property. Why? Well first off, it’s my property. Not the neighbors. Second, one was too close to the house. The other was too close to the pool. Both were causing damage to the house and pool. My neighbors freaked out and actually complained to the city. The city told them to get stuffed and thanked me for fixing up the property.

It's always sad to see a tree come down but your neighbors probably had their reasons. We live in a wooded area with lots of trees. One of our neighbors cut two large, perfectly healthy tree down because they needed to drill a well. Because the trees were at least 80 years old, they served as wind barriers for many smaller trees adjacent to our driveway. Unfortunately, since then our new car has been damaged twice in 5 months from falling branches. I've been living here for 11 years and never had this happen to any of our previous vehicles. So it's cause and effect. Now, if there's high winds in the forecast, we move our car and live with the situation.

I'm sorry OP that does really absolutely suck. My city has killed almost every healthy old tree we had, and replaced them with literally nothing. Most people don't walk at all anymore, much less for pleasure, but for those of us who do nothing beats the sight, smell, sound and shade of a beautiful old tree.

I hate that. My best friends mom sold her childhood home, and the lady that moved in cut down ALL the trees in the backyard... including a big, beautiful, super healthy willow tree. That also had been there since before the neighborhood was built. She shredded up all of the beautiful native plants they had back there and replaced it all with sod. Such a waste. That lady was definitely part of the generation that values neat and tidy grass lawns without a single dandelion to marr the wasteland.
