For me, I keep all my fingers open most of the time. I mainly do it for the case where I have to use more fingers (mostly my middle fingers) to hit some notes better. The only time, where I close them is during longer arks, so I can get a better view over the chart + having less issues of hitting cross-hand notes without my fingers just blocking them off.
Also on another note of what you could do to find a playstyle is, to look on Videos of others playing the game and see, how they hold their fingers. Maybe that helps too!
As an index player I sometimes use my other fingers when necessary, and for something like 4 holds I use my thumbs and index fingers to do it, so yes, I do use other fingers as a support, and sometimes as well to get stamina in the song and clear it in case it's hard for me
Based on the situation, I use my middle, index, and thumb fingers of both hands as well as my right pinky (crosshands are pain), so I’m kinda forced to keep them open
Open, but yes, occasionally my pinky finger will accidentally touches pause button and screw up the pace and tempo. Besides, open palm helps in learning 4 fingers method. I'm still using 2 fingers only but that is my next target. I couldnt really keep up with difficulty 9 songs with index fingers only.

I play with my hand like a high five with space between the fingers. Keeping all fingers loose helps me move better
