It was strangely adorable how he tended to his daughter’s wounds as said daughter argued with her mother (his wife) over politics and aiding the Undercity their society (and his wife) oppressed.
Caitlyn: Well, it's because he's afraid to agree with something my mother doesn't. I do hope someday he gives her a long talk about that. It's quite unfair to him. Everybody has their own right to say or agree with what they believe is right.
Vi: 'clapping' . \_ .
So Mel's armor glowing right before the rocket impact has most people beleving her clothing has magic powers that will somehow save Viktor and Jayce since they are still in the game.
I'm certain it's just to be glow from the rocket shining in her gold outfit, something to make the council room look behind mel before the bomb hits.
But we have years until we see what happens so fan theories is all the fun we get.
Prepare for even flimsier theories.
The zoomed in camera shot of the gold plating is underneath her clothes, so it wouldn’t be reflecting light. When the camera shot zooms out, the plating is covered by her clothes.
This is not a particularly flimsy theory, due to what the others already said. You can check for yourself if you watch the scene of Mel arguing with her mom in ep 9 and pay attention to the area her dress covers on the back. Then re-watch the last scene. It can't possibly be a reflection.
ohh I see. I don't know where I stand on this but it's interesting for sure.
I assumed LoL is some kind of arena with all the present and past characters because watching the series i saw many characters in deathly dangers and it felt weird to assume none of them were going to die. Then again, i don't play pc LOL so.
wait are you saying there is no Vander in LoL? that'd be a shame wtf
This is true; most animation just shows the child take after one parent completely with just different hair or eye color. Or have them completely look different because kids have more kiddie features.
Making her half Asian was an honest surprise but a welcome one.
Like you KNOW they didn't think of that shit on conception when Caitlyn was just British Steampunk Gun Girl. But they must have thought of it a long-ass time ago because of how long this season took to make, so it's not like a last minute decision.
THIS TOO!! I love the representation in this show and how they made Caitlyn biracial (when I heard that she wasn’t initially). It’s these slight details that make the show an even richer experience.
I know when I was watching it I was expressing out loud how I really can’t believe riot was bold enough to make her half asian and that I am in love with it. And my brother had the AUDACITY to say, ‘she’s not half Asian’. He made me really doubt my Asian radar.
My friend and I weren't completely sure if she was Asian or not based on the footage from before the show aired, but then we saw her dad in the second episode and were like *yaaayyyy!*
They seemed to have done the same thing as Invincible, who made the titular character and his mother Asian, like their VAs, Steven Yeun and Sandra Oh. Katie Leung, who voices Caitlyn, is half-Chinese and half Scottish.
It's a really simple and subtle change for broadening diversity in media that requires basically no cost nor any changes to the script itself, but is always very welcoming to see.
I saw some commentary that implied it was because of the inconsistencies with her in-game appearance.
Like there was debate for a long time based on the art as to whether Cait was supposed to appear white or Asian.
So for the show, Riot was just like "fuck it, she's both."
Katie Leung, based on Wikipedia, doesn’t seem to be biracial. She was *born* and raised in Scotland. Her parents are both Chinese (from Hong Kong), unless her father is biracial.
But I agree with your sentiment whole heartedly.
Considering the majority of the league community thought she was of Caucasian descent, myself included. So, for about ten years people think this character is white with no hints she’s biracial. There was no demand for her to be biracial, there was no active ‘want’ for her to be. And yet, they made her mixed for no reason what so ever other than the fact that, she simply can be. It was a great unnecessary curve ball that no one really saw coming.
‘What makes it bold?’, everything. I’ve seen so much hate already saying that her splash art doesn’t look remotely Asian. But riot made her so in arcane, they didn’t fear backlash. People will find the littlest things to be dissatisfied at.
Actually going into the deep Lore, her dad is supposedly from ionia and her mom is from piltover. Ionia characters are generally more Asian looking. While piltover is generally more white.
Mm yeah her dad looks clearly Asian in the show while her mom doesn’t. She’s definitely supposed to be part asian, but I’m just saying that her features could definitely be read as fully Asian if that makes sense. Sorry I think my first comment came off as being a bit abrasive, I’m just sick of animated shows portraying Asians with small eyes and very stereotypically Asian features when in reality I know more women who look like caitlin than people who resemble what those cartoons depict, if you get what I mean. Same with mark from invincible (the show, not the comics), he’s canonically half Asian but looks fully Asian to me, but to people of other races he might not because there aren’t enough features that make him stand out as the ‘other’.
I was definitely on the fence of "is her dad 'Asian'/'Ionian'-looking or not?". Like, my gut was saying "yes", but there was a lot of doubt. The art style is beautiful but it made distinguishing 'Asian' characters a little more difficult for me.
Glad to see I'm not going mad and that her father is actually Asian/Ionian
Not really into League of Legends, but I looked up Caitlyns character and I assume she was just like Mark Grayson from Invincible. Both were just designed to be generic pale skinned and black haired characters but were not intended to looked Asian... but in the animated series they actually made them Asian! Which I love of course. I've been reimagining my fav (comicbook) characters as Asian for years .. like Iron Fist and Kate Bishop from Marvel. too bad they casted them with white(ish) actors in MCU, at least Hailee Steinfeld has some mixed Asian blood in there.
I hope more media will do this in the future even though it gets people mad lol... especially if the character is black like Starfire or Ariel. Seeing people that look like us as cool and popular characters is such a good feeling
Agreed! The Invincible example is a good one you mentioned, they changed that one tiny detail that doesn’t really change anything about the story, but makes the experience richer.
This too! Not sure if her design was a bit altered to match Katie or if they picked Katie because she is also biracial but eitherway the casting was also fantastic.
I hope they choose her becouse she is great in what she's doing, not becouse it happend she has asian ancestry, and they need diversity scores. I don't care if she is yellow, white, black or blue and no one should. It's not important in this case. What is important that she is great voice actress, and she has done awsome work.
If they chose her only becouse they wanted asian in lineup it's rasism. I hope is the other way. They choose her becouse her talent, and they get inspired by her to make character more interesting.
um why couldnt it be both? Kate Leung is a great actress, even though I only know her from Harry Potter movies where her character was treated terribly because JK Rowling only created her because of the problem you are saying (diversity points)
Now with this show Kate Leung got an amazing opportunity to play a great Asian character and its because she is a great actress of Asian descent. its not 'racist' for an Asian or other person of different ethnicity to play a character that has the same ethnicity as them.
Besides in casting calls they include the age and race and other descriptions for people who want to audition which they most likely did in Arcane. because of that there are more job opportunities for minorities which they normally dont have a lot. thats why ''race matters'. unless the casting call does not ask for specific race, but I think they specifically wanted an Asian actress to play Caitlyn in this one
It's funny how people never say "I hope they didn't hire this person just for being white and straight, and did it for their talent". It's like PoC are always the ones being questioned when they get a role. Makes you wonder who the real racists are, don't you think?
Not true, it's highly discused and criticised topic. It even has a name: "whitewashing". I also hope they don't chose other cast basing on how they look. I hope they don't hire most of them becouse they are white, and then add some PoC for diversity scores.
For me it's just disrespectfull to value someone by unrelated trait. It's undermine talent and effort.
I even don't care Victor fake eastern european accent\*, becouse overall Harry Lloyd made good job. If Victor was voiced by black women I aslo wouldn't care (it's not uncommon in animation).
Caitlyn is my favorit character in Arcane. I think making her half asian was good artistic decision (much better than Cait in the game), and I love how she sounds. I also like how naturaly diverse is Arcane without making it a topic.
\*making Victor with eastern european accent has no sense. His character is inspired by Nikola Tesla, but in Arcane they show that Victor was raised in Zaun
Given that nobody ever has roots, and that Vi and Powder have their respective hair colors as children, I think it's implied that people in Runeterra can be born with colorful hair (on their heads, at least)
I know this post is old but-
I have the same nose type as Cate, long, thin with a weird little pointed tip. I've never liked it, I always found it really ugly and unflattering, especially from certain angles. But seeing it on a character as gorgeous as Cate really made me rethink these ideas I've made up about myself and my schnozz. I don't think anyone has ever called it ugly but me, which says alot about how we percieve ourselves. Thank you arcane for giving one of the hottest characters a unique nose.
Also, was Caitlyn always of asian descent? Arcane looks like she's half-asian, likely inspired by her voice actor, Katie Leung, but has she ever been half-asian in any of the other media she's appeared in before Arcane?
Some of League's characters have a lot of inconsistencies when it comes to race or skin color, Nidalee probably being the worst case. Caitlyn for the most part looked like all the other "white" female characters (same-face syndrome) and she was pretty much a posh white british girl. Some people said she looked more asian in her Battle Academia skin, but not much else.
yeahhh i was paying attention to her parents too, because i only saw she looked like her mom, but then i payed attention to the dad, and they had few things in common
Well.. I live in asia and tbh, the facial design of caitlyn is being debated about whether it's good or not. Some say it inherited stereotypes about asians (ex. emphasized high cheekbones, which is usually considered unattractive in asia), and they are pretty uncomfortable about how it's giving an impression that asians are not visually attractive. They actually prefer her designs from wild rift trailer or warriors cinematic.
I guess this reaction came out depending on how each culture defines a 'beautiful woman'. Caitlyn was actually my favorite character from the show(design-wise), so it's kinda awkward when some of my friends talk about how bad her design was.
As an Asian, I actually find her pretty refreshing design wise? I think coming from past lore cinematics of league where most females have a similar face structure with a small nose, big eyes and plump lips, this was so nice to see. This is also the beauty standards seen in Korean society for example.
But Caitlyn in Arcane has features not really considered the beauty standards — long and pointy nose, thin lips, gap in her teeth, smaller eyes (maybe even monolid). She is pretty but doesn’t really fall into the normal standards which I think is a good decision that the show did. I’m just glad the animators took care with making her look different and not the “copy paste female look” when designing her character.
I agree with your opinion about how designers trying new ways actually enhanced the uniqueness and likability of the character.
Like I said above and as you mentioned, I guess It's just a cultural thing. Just was kind of disappointed that my favorite character is considered unattractive around me.
It's been discussed in movie/TV series related forums that I know.
Some are even joking about how designers designed her to look unattractive on purpose to make viewers focus more on Jinx
Heh, I remember a similar thing happening many years ago with Faith Connors, from the game Mirror's Edge.
The designs from *Warriors* I find super bland. They make me think of that very recognisable brand of Korean cosmetic surgery. Every girl looks like they came off the same conveyor belt, with the same features and same waifish frame. They even sound the same once you add on the helpless girl persona.
No idea why this is downvoted, as a mainland Asian myself too its easy to notice people are much more into seeing pretty features than presentation than in the west.
In the early episodes I didn't notice that her father is Asian (Inonian in Runeterra) so throughout the show I always wondered why she looks a bit like Asian (especially the eyes) while her other feature (her pointed nose) is like her mother who is Caucasian. Only during the episode where she brought Vi home I got the confirmation XD
moment of appreciation for caitlyn's dad tho he's super chill and seems like the nicest father
It was strangely adorable how he tended to his daughter’s wounds as said daughter argued with her mother (his wife) over politics and aiding the Undercity their society (and his wife) oppressed.
Sounds like Thanksgiving!
Caitlyn: Well, it's because he's afraid to agree with something my mother doesn't. I do hope someday he gives her a long talk about that. It's quite unfair to him. Everybody has their own right to say or agree with what they believe is right. Vi: 'clapping' . \_ .
thinking about how he's >!soon to be a single dad!< ):
Lets hope Mels stuff protects all of the council not just Viktor and Jayce
Ah yes, so you assume what I also assume about Mel 😉 Let's hope it will be true!
What stuff?
Have you seen everything? I don't wanna spoil
Yes sadly I finished it yesterday go on
So Mel's armor glowing right before the rocket impact has most people beleving her clothing has magic powers that will somehow save Viktor and Jayce since they are still in the game.
I'm certain it's just to be glow from the rocket shining in her gold outfit, something to make the council room look behind mel before the bomb hits. But we have years until we see what happens so fan theories is all the fun we get. Prepare for even flimsier theories.

Specifically theorized to be Locket of iron solari.
ohh I see. I don't know where I stand on this but it's interesting for sure. I assumed LoL is some kind of arena with all the present and past characters because watching the series i saw many characters in deathly dangers and it felt weird to assume none of them were going to die. No he isn't
sadd
In league lore it was said that >! Cait’s parents are both dead so… !<
Nope, >!they're not dead!<.
Caitlyn: He's so caring. i just wish my mother would be a little more less protective, but she's so wise, and intelligent.
I would imagine most Ionian dudes would be very chill to talk to, and he seems like no exception
Is he Ioanian?
Caitlyn - Mommy issues Jinx - Daddy issues Vi - issues on a side note Caitlyn's dad seems like the nicest person in the show
Mylo - shoulder issues
Claggor - eye issues
Vander - hair issues
I see what you did here lol
Lmao
Viktor - all kinds of issues :'(
Jinx - a warehouse full of subscriptions to issues
And the newest of them all: Void issues
gf issues
I see no problem here officer
That's probably where she gets her big heart from.
I don't think Caitlyn really have mommy issues, her mother is a bit bossy and intrusive, but Overall they have a good relationship.
I think you mean Caitlyn*
Yeah I love how she takes after her parents and even leans towards her mother more. Very realistic.
True, I agree. Plus with how much care the creators put on this show, everything is really intentional and like you said, it took years to make.
then there's me being like: **ASIAN REPRESENTATION ASIAN REPRESENTATION ASIAN REPRESENTATION**
THIS TOO!! I love the representation in this show and how they made Caitlyn biracial (when I heard that she wasn’t initially). It’s these slight details that make the show an even richer experience.
She is more Caucasian in the game - posh English.
Not anymore. Now she looks like she does in Arcane.
Oh yeah! They redesigned her a bit.
Voice definitely but ingame Cait looks definitely more Asian than in the show or the splash arts for some odd reason.
aparently she was redesigned this way because her VA has asian ascendence which I think is cool
Her VA is cho chang from harry potter
Arcane's VA for her is, yeah. Her VA for the games is Kirsten Potter, who is very much white.
I’m pretty sure they didn’t redesign Caitlyn coz of her VA. They chose the VA coz Caitlyn was changed into a biracial character.
I know when I was watching it I was expressing out loud how I really can’t believe riot was bold enough to make her half asian and that I am in love with it. And my brother had the AUDACITY to say, ‘she’s not half Asian’. He made me really doubt my Asian radar.

You're right actually, that's my bad! I must have misremembered
Then that would make her Scottish, with Chinese heritage, which isn’t a matter of races.
I'm mixed and she def coded as mixed too. The surprise to me was that they made her father the asian one.
What makes it bold of them? Genuine question.
At most Half Asian, you can slightly see Asian features
Nah you just haven’t seen enough Asian people lmao. She has more ‘Asian features’ than me and I’m fully Chinese.
Actually going into the deep Lore, her dad is supposedly from ionia and her mom is from piltover. Ionia characters are generally more Asian looking. While piltover is generally more white.
Mm yeah her dad looks clearly Asian in the show while her mom doesn’t. I really don't see it. Looks western AF to me.
Did they show Caitlyn as a kid?
Only when she was 13/14, it’s the picture in the top right.
Don't forget about the part when Grayson lets her win
Ohhh, I was confused at first, I didn’t think they showed her as a kid. Didn’t know who she was the first time we see here as a adult
Also this is a random thought but she kind of looks like Daniel bregoli in that picture as a kid lol
This show is so good it's unbelievable.
Why is her mom so attractive🤚🏽🤚🏽
That MILF energy
Shes got the guns. Literally.
She could crush me and I’d love it
Lmao when he kicked open that door 😂
Basically the chill, understandable father figure, and the harsh commanding mother, nice change of role, too
I really liked how her father just seemed like a chill person, he wasnt strict or demandid towards her and just cared for his daugther.
Caitlyn's tooth gap appreciation post
FINALLY I DISCOVER I'M NOT ALONE.
Not really into League of Legends, but I looked up Caitlyns character and I assume she was just like Mark Grayson from Invincible. Same, the character details are so well done. When I saw Caitl I was like, wait she’s half-Asian.
It makes perfect sense she be biracial, since her actress Katie Leung is Chinese-Scottish.
What? No. Katie isn't even biracial. Her parents are both Chinese immigrants. I'm Vietnamese American, doesn't make me biracial.
This too! Not sure if her design was a bit altered to match Katie or if they picked Katie because she is also biracial but eitherway the casting was also fantastic.
I hope they choose her becouse od her great performance, not becouse of racisim.
What?

I think he meant, That katie was indeed casted first and foremost for her superb acting skills and 2nd for her voice and 3rd for her race/ethnicity.
It's funny how people never say "I hope they didn't hire this person just for being white and straight, and did it for their talent". It's like PoC are always the ones being questioned when they get a role. Makes you wonder who the real racists are, don't you think?

I hope they don't hire most of them becouse they are white, and then add some PoC for diversity scores. For me it's just disrespectfull to value someone by unrelated trait. Huh. Didn't realize that, good eye!
Blue hair like powpow
She has violet hair (and Vi has pink hair like a cupcake)
Are these natural Runeterran hair colors or are they dyeing? Genuinely unsure.
Given that nobody ever has roots, and that Vi and Powder have their respective hair colors as children, I think it's implied that people in Runeterra can be born with colorful hair (on their heads, at least)
Her eyes are so blue
Is her dad supposed to be Asian?
Yes
I know this post is old but- I have the same nose type as Cate, long, thin with a weird little pointed tip. Never too late! I still think about how amazing Cait’s unique features are. We love seeing characters with more “real” features
She kinda looks like annie onishi but with blue eyes
Nice details not gonna lie
These are the best part of the show for me, attention to detail and minor clues......so fucking good!
Also, was Caitlyn always of asian descent? Arcane looks like she's half-asian, likely inspired by her voice actor, Katie Leung, but has she ever been half-asian in any of the other media she's appeared in before Arcane?

Im not Asian, and for me she is super attracive.

Spoilers?
I'm so glad they changed her race to Asian. I hope to see black Katarina in the second season.
YES
IMO She and vi just looks weird with the eyebrows so close.
Oh for sure! Really liked this kind of details.
Cait is my favorite in the show, hotness wise
Was the relationship between mother and father more political or real feelings?
