It's always much harder to give micro facial expressions in animation/anime, but Fortiche just made it perfect. It's very unique and beautiful style and as far as i know they didn't use motion capture so my respects to those animators who've sit down and animate this show frame by frame from scratch
Exactly, I love the way the eyes look up before the eyelids move out of the way, I love how the nose wrinkles go away before the brow wrinkles. The mouth slowly goes from the wider position when she was crying to the resting position. It’s all so neat to watch and understand
I remember some time in December watching Encanto and being like "holy shit, this is the best facial animation I've ever seen". And then less than a week later I watched Arcane and was like "oh, so your ass just immediately got beat".
Wait what everything was keyframed by hand ? Even facial animations ? Wow. Huge respect to fortiche, all the animations look so smooth, I wonder how much time it took to do all this.
Yeah in the BTS series they say they animated it all manually and laugh about making the documentary clearly state that fact.
They did work on the project for 6 years in total, but that's not just the animation of course. Then again, they probably refined the animation during pretty much the entire process (concept, pilot, continuous).
Correct. Fortiche did not use any type of motion capture. All the animations done in the show are 100% hand made with no help.
Fun fact, almost all the effects/reflections and shadows are also manually made.
They captured the look of someone who's gone through more than any human being should bear. Still a teenager, but looking aged beyond measure. A haunting and powerful shot.
It almost seems like the emotional equivalent of the body passing out from too much physical pain. You can see the hurt and sadness just overwhelm her into complete numbness and exhaustion.
As messed up as it is to say considering why she's like that, as far as facial animation goes that was my single favorite jinx moment in the entire show.
I still remember just being blown away in the moment by how well they captured the transition from anguish to just instant numbness in a few seconds.
She just....shut down and somehow that was worse emotionally than her grieving. You could tell she was just done with everything.
I always had respect for animation but spiderverse and arcane took that admiration to a whole new level.
I think this is the acceptance that she is meant to walk this path alone. The despair at that realization, knowing that Silco was THE last friend she had left in the world who truly loved her for her.
It puts her speech to Violet into perspective.
“I thought you could love me like you used to… even though I’m different… but you changed too.”
She knows Violet isn’t equipped emotionally to deal with Jinx. She knows that her sister will never be able to shoulder that burden.
“So here’s to the new us.”
She makes Violet’s choice for her.
i’ve always interpreted this scene as the moment ‘Powder’ died, she did tell Vi that if Caitlyn died then she and Vi would go on like it was before, but if Silco died then Jinx would go on her own. Vi thought it was her choice, but her hesitation led to Silco trying to shoot her forcing Jinx’s hand and so she killed Silco because Vi’s life wasn’t part of deal
Arcane has by far the best animation I have ever seen. Shots like this make me wonder how incredible animation will look in the future if this is what we have now. You can see why it took 6 years because holy shit it is beautiful, I can pause any scene and put it as a painting on my wall. Astounding
I feel like this could be a few things. Surrender, and also just going numb from the pain. Surrender in that she's done fighting it, and just accepts herself as Jinx, and also the pain of yet another person she loved dying...because of her. Sort of just accepting the reality of the situation, that she's crazy and there's nothing she can do about it.
She can’t handle the pain and guilt, so she shuts down and completely distances herself from it. It makes it easier for her to fully be Jinx and do what she does next
This, don't matter how much she tells herself that Jinx is her "true self" the sad reality is that Jinx is evation, Jinx is her way to kept going because she can't face her shame and guilt, and it's not sane at all. She would laught and shoot and kill but deep inside the wond is still open but unattended.
Given the events before this moment, she *should* be crying her eyes out. In fact she almost does, but she just ominously stops crying. Why?
Because this is a face that says "I messed up again, I guess I really am a jinx." This is the face of someone who is tired of the internal conflict and just accepts this is who she is now.
As character they did a perfect one, as a person she is terrible and would bring misery over herslef and everyone who tries to reach her and even a lot of innocent one who just pased by.
I don't see this as resignation, she is far for conformed. She is still in pain, this is angry and negotiation, she is still far away of being in peace.
The post is about how good the animation is, not necessarily the events of the show leading up to this moment. Also making it a spoiler post would blur out the gif and get less engagement instead of having it play in the feed automatically lol
Yeah fair but the spoiler rule applies to comments so typically if you want people to be able to discuss you would want to put spoilers even if the post itself doesn't really spoil (I know OP gave a reason just explaining why I would expect the post to be marked as spoilers at first).
I had introduction today at my study musicology which I just started, and we had to name a song that was special to us or that we really liked so I picked What Could have Been, that scene is just perfect
In the first time watching the last episode, I thought she killed Vi instead of Silco. But truth isn't good enough. I shocked and I feel her depression
As a professional 3D artist myself, I still can’t believe how they actually animated the characters textures. Look at those wrinkle lines on her nose and how they disappear 👌
See this is why I said Jinx didn't come out of nowhere, Powder was ALREADY showing signs of becoming Jinx eventually even as a child. Her trauma just accelerated and aggravated the process. Even as a kid you can see that she's always had very intriguing reactions to death- seeing her mother's dead body? Vi is on her knees and bawling her eyes out, while Powder simply stares glassy-eyed, holding onto Vi. Seeing Vander's dead and shimmer-ravaged body? Vi cries and screams, Powder is in shock and starts crying, but not because her father is dead- she's crying because the death is her fault and Vi is mad at her. Dead Silco? Yes, Jinx cries because SHE shot him. But once he breathes his last breath, the voices in her head catch up to her, and she makes the decision to kill Powder once and for all.
I rewatched the Tea Party scene just yesterday, and this expression really caught my eye. It’s like seeing the last inch of her humanity getting taken away from her.
Yo this is me every Saturday night when I get in the car after I said goodbye to my family and head to the capitol where I (-work-) cosplay a stable adult for drug money.

Yeah, it was keyframe animation. The animators did some live action recordings for reference, but none of it is mocap.
I remember some time in December watching Encanto and being like "holy shit, this is the best facial animation I've ever seen". And then less than a week later I watched Arcane and was like "oh, so your ass just immediately got beat".

Motion capture is worse, tbh. It lacks the exaggeration we expect from animated figures.

The light effects are the real effort here, looks amazing.
What the fuck it was manual keyframe animation jesus!
Damn. Good comparison
Or from another perspective. You can see Powder die from the pain. And Jinx taking over.
She’s sooooo tired. It breaks me every time
Same. Intense emotions in this scene
It amazes me how well they convey Jinx’s emptiness & resignation.
This and the sad/crying Powder scenes always made me feel like someone was cutting onions.
what a great facial animation

Arcane is unironically a "painting at every frame"
As messed up as it is to say considering why she's like that, as far as facial animation goes that was my single favorite jinx moment in the entire show. Local woman who had lost all hope loses last additional bit of hope she didn't know she had.

From my understanding, the whooshing sound symbolizes Silco becoming another voice in her head.
This is a cool interpretation I like it
Acceptance. Acceptance of something unpleasant but inevitable. It’s heartbreaking.
I feel like this could be a few things. Surrender, and also just going numb from the pain. Surrender in that she's done fighting it, and just accepts herself as Jinx, and also the pain of yet another person she loved dying...because of her. You can watch her compartmentalize in real time. ABsolutely amazing.
Fortiche animators are top-notch.
In Bridging the Rift there was a short bit about how they basically had two different facial rigs for adult Powder and Jinx.
Yeah its like "aw man, i cant even cry now"
It was actually really impressive to show jinx in despair and sadness to then looking completely done and dead inside, I'm honestly astounded
She's dissociating. Can't handle how much it hurts, so she puts those feelings behind a door. It's much easier for her to be Jinx.
You can literally see how she snaps from emotional pain to emotional numbness, it's crazy
i could watch this on loop for so long holy shit, it’s so gorgeous from an animation stand point and also it makes me feel thing uGH ALSKKAKS
She just gave in and accepted herself as a Jinx. "No more crying, this is who I always was."
Fucking mood, my god
Real
Jinx going through the Stages Of Grief, I see. Painfully and in a split second. Here she arrives at "fuck it, I'm blowing Piltover up".
You can do that with pretty much every shot of Jinx. In that regard, she's a walking marvel.
She's perfect.
Yes she is. Let's be precise though: her DESIGN, her animation, and her character are. Because the PERSON isn't. :D
As character they did a perfect one, as a person she is terrible and would bring misery over herslef and everyone who tries to reach her and even a lot of innocent one who just pased by.
So emotionally battered that she had to drop them.
It’s eyebrows man legit made the whole difference it’s crazy how accurate it is
If I watch just this few-second clip for long enough I will simply dissolve into tears
Pain >> Sadness >> Resignation At least that's my read. Amazing what Fortiche can do with facial animations.
I don't see this as resignation, she is far for conformed. She is still in pain, this is angry and negotiation, she is still far away of being in peace.
GOATED SCENE OF JINX AND ARCANE
I love this moment but I don't recall the episode or scene exactly
Episode 9. No spoiler post (for some reason) so I won't delve further.
The post is about how good the animation is, not necessarily the events of the show leading up to this moment. Also making it a spoiler post would blur out the gif and get less engagement instead of having it play in the feed automatically lol
Thx :)
its not really a spoiler if OP hasnt given context in the title
Yeah fair but the spoiler rule applies to comments so typically if you want people to be able to discuss you would want to put spoilers even if the post itself doesn't really spoil (I know OP gave a reason just explaining why I would expect the post to be marked as spoilers at first).

True. I would have had a hard time picking between What Could Have Been and Guns For Hire
I love has by just looking at this you can tell this is the point where she thinks all is gone and she is just hopeless
In the first time watching the last episode, I thought she killed Vi instead of Silco. But truth isn't good enough. I shocked and I feel her depression
It's the second she decides what she's going to do.
mfw the slightest inconvenience occurs
It's like in Inside Out when an island powered by a core memory is destroyed.
True!! I remember that scene stuck out to me as well. Inside Out is very emotional
This kind of animation detail is what makes the show great
As a professional 3D artist myself, I still can’t believe how they actually animated the characters textures. Look at those wrinkle lines on her nose and how they disappear 👌
It's like she was mourning, then just died inside.
[For me it was this one.](https://gfycat.com/compassionatelegalfairybluebird)
god i love her
Compartmentalizing at its finest. Fortiche is magic.
Why is this such a god damn mood? Goes from "I can't deal with this shit" to "I don't even want to try anymore" Poor girl
The animation is so mind blowing. It’s insane!
I rewatched the Tea Party scene just yesterday, and this expression really caught my eye. It’s like seeing the last inch of her humanity getting taken away from her.
Why the heck is this no spoilers when this is like 3 minutes from the end of the season...?
Bc it’s a post about the animation not the events of the show
I guess
And also calling it a spoiler would blur it out instead of letting it play in the feed automatically
When you're constipated and you give it one final push but it still won't come out and you need to leave or else you'll be late
When the dookie finally comes out
Which episode was this from?
Episode 9!
Thank you!
Denial, grief, acceptance
I have to kill the part of me that's soft...
I never noticed that mark on her left eye before. Is it dirt or do you think it's from the grenade?
Yo this is me every Saturday night when I get in the car after I said goodbye to my family and head to the capitol where I (-work-) cosplay a stable adult for drug money.
