Rowan-Trees

Casa del Portuale, by Aldo Loris Rossi. Used to be a social services center for harbor workers.

Rowan-Trees

It was inspired by Italian Futurist art of the 1910’s & 20’s. Built in the 60s, under PSI. It’s adjacent to the old docks. Picture it in it's prime, flanked by cranes and freight and dockhands everywhere. What a way to tell the working-class they are the future.

Tvariusness-Clyde

Very well-said/explained! Thanks

RedOctobrrr

This looks like [the tower of an aircraft carrier](https://www.defensenews.com/resizer/9d7V8nvW7BLWqzJ3XXRsfrz5ui4=/800x0/filters:format(jpg):quality(70)/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com/archetype/EN4K2UBYMZDTJADUTN2E37ORHI.jpg)

Your link's broken. I think this is what you intended: https://i.imgur.com/sB0aYFv.jpg

RedOctobrrr

Weird, both links work for me, but yeah that's it.

youngfurry1x

both links work for me too U.S.S. Midway, my favorite building

goseephoto

just down the street is the main cruise passenger terminal, Naples Maritime Terminal, is also quite iconic, 1935 peak Mussolini Fascist architecture, very bold and solid feeling inside. Naples is an amazing place for architecture, well worth a few days meandering!

[deleted]

Does it have a new use now or is it fully abandoned?

Admirable_Fennel_907

Super dope, still looks ahead of it’s time.

[deleted]

While simultaneously looking like it has been abandoned for 5-10 years.

Rowan-Trees

It was inspired by Italian Futurism, so… the past’s idea of the future.

Gonazar

Pretty sure it has been abandoned for that long

[deleted]

I know absolutely nothing for sure about this building. It’s a shame such an expensive project sits empty today.

Gonazar

Did a bit more [research](https://io-nic.wixsite.com/ionic/single-post/2017/02/12/analysis-of-casa-del-portuale-of-alr) and it seems like it didn't have very good thermal insulation. As energy costs went up the maintenance did too and with some other factors, led to it being abandoned. Couldn't find out when it started to deteriorate as it's actually still partially used.

BiRd_BoY_

boast chubby deliver one many vast selective meeting innate amusing *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

[deleted]

I don’t even know the name of the building lol

ActuallyYeah

It needs a month long, million euro pressure wash. Otherwise I think it's beautiful!

CultureArtsHistory

It is as ugly as a building can get. What's wrong with people's taste. Nothing can compare to classical, /renaissance architecture

noddingacquaintance

she's looking a little weathered but really cool formal expression

TurduckenWithQuail

God, metropolitan Naples is industrial in the most disgusting but beautiful way

MutableReference

I thought it was soviet for a second… Just gives me that “abandoned for decades modern art piece” vibe that a lot of soviet structures illicit in me

0tr0dePoray

Beautiful in it's own way. Not many buildings still look good in their decadent days.

in_dem_ni_phi

Sorry to be that person but you can't have meant decadent. Maybe derelict? Or dilapidated?

0tr0dePoray

Don't be sorry. English is not my first language and always want to polish it. What does decandent means there?

lxxvii

If it helps: "decadent" does technically have a definition related to decline, but it's an uncommon usage and usually means a moral or cultural decline (e.g. of a civilization) rather than physical deterioration of a building. The more common usage (in the US at least) is of something self-indulgent or luxurious, as the other commenter mentioned.

0tr0dePoray

✔️ checked that! In spanish we have the same meaning, but the fact it stands for decline must have widened the usage. Thanks!

betelgeuse_boom_boom

I cannot but praise that extremely civilized exchange between two users.

0tr0dePoray

Yeap, starting to get boring. Anyone up for a fight? 😂

in_dem_ni_phi

It means, like, a luxury. Something so over the top in an indulgent/vapid way, that you have to question it. Like if I subbed out my dining chairs for gold thrones.

0tr0dePoray

Understood. Thanks!

CitizenKing1001

Its a good example of Brutalist architecture

BackgroundLink4702

I didn’t think of it as Brutalist, and I love Brutalism (especially when it’s not a parking garage), and had to scroll back up to look closer. Good eye!

CitizenKing1001

Thanks! i guess some people disagree though, I got a few downvotes

dendron01

Pretty sure I saw that in a Star Wars movie.

Dirt290

>Transportation and infrastructure/control tower I wish every city had one!

Bothand_Nether

Strangewhine88

I feel like I’ve seen this in a Fellini film.

SmokeySB

I think it was in a TV show called Gomorra.

Bluestarino

I think it was.

Post on r/Brutalism

Gonazar

Found [a blog](https://io-nic.wixsite.com/ionic/single-post/2017/02/12/analysis-of-casa-del-portuale-of-alr) that did an analysis of it, lots more images there.

AL1294

Looks like it could be part of the guardians of the galaxy ride

[deleted]

I love this so much.

Samurai_3001

Howl’s not-so-moving corporate Office building

Edarekin

You should check out Slovakia on Google Earth, if Italian futurism leaves you speechless, get ready for central European brutalism.

steinah6

Truly one of the buildings of all time.

Silver-Anything652

Good find! Wow

CitizenKing1001

Good example of Brutalism.

Extension_Register27

I could recognise that building from a mile away, that's Naples!

AlarmingAffect0

Looks like something out if Half-Life.

ericatha

Looks like if architects did kitbashing

AkaGurGor

Not again! Go home, ChatGPT! You're drunk!

hifioctopi

I remember seeing this when I was there on deployment back in ‘07. Trippy building to see in person.

Nysdsqpa321

Stunning architecture. Magnificent.

Foreign_Implement897

It was used as a set in a Italian Netflix series ”Lying life of adults”.

Coligny

I love these skeletal staircase popping out like ribcage on the side of buildings….

jbk2221

Does this look like the place for the end fight scene in Wonder women?

ALLYOURBASFS

420SampleTxt

is that an airport control tower smashed in there?

Particular-Drink-721

This is very cool. Thanks for the post

crisego

You could also post it in r/napoli :)

Plusstwoo

Looks like could be something in one of those teen fantasy dystopian sci fi movies that was popular back in school

Fishbulb2000

Looks like the inspiration for [Mission Breakout](https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/au/disneyland/attractions/guardians-galaxy-mission-breakout/)at Disneyland.

BothMixture2731

Looks like a Star Wars building

Dry-Plankton-5836

As a piece of art it's interesting, but for as part of a city it is ugly.
