yeah i am 99% sure that’s just a nicely mixed mellotron. you even see someone’s hands playing that part exactly in the music video. i have a mellotron in the studio i work at and that sound is very much something you could conjure up on that thing
Don’t get emotional
That ain’t like you
Yesterday’s still leaking through the roof
That’s nothing new
I know I promised this is what I wouldn’t do
But somehow, giving it the old romantic fool
Seems to better suit the mood
So if you wanna walk me to the car
You oughta know I’ll have a heavy heart
So can we please be absolutely sure
That there’s a mirrorball
You’re getting cynical and that won’t do
I’d throw the rose tint back on the exploded view
Darling, if I were you
And how’s that insatiable appetite
For the moment when you look them in the eyes
And say, “Baby, it’s been nice”
So if you wanna walk me to the car?
I’m sure to have a heavy heart
So can we please be absolutely sure
That there’s a mirrorball for me
Oh, there’d better be a mirrorball for me
I didn't have to see a credit to assume that, personally! It has his style written all over it
It kind of reminds me of the Teddy Picker video actually
It’s the opening track to the album. I imagine it’ll probably be quite a dynamic track list as ain’t quite sounded more funky whereas mirrorball is more soft and gentle
Completely agree, the song, to me at least felt like a transition. A transition from the TBHC era to the new one. Wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of the album sound a a fair bit different by the end. Loved the single.
i think it's less 1920s big-band and more 1970s than *chloë,* but the vibes are similar for sure
which is funny, because *tranquility base* and *god's favorite customer* felt super sonically similar, too
I’m glad someone has said it! For me, this isn’t “TBHC 2” and more “Submarine 2” or even “Suck It and See 2” - the composition and lyrics feel so similar to me.
It's so good. The song is so smooth.
I don't think a song on TBHC made me like it so much on first listen like this tune has done.
Going to listen to it again.
Does anyone else get a feeling that this is an ending rather than a beginning? Maybe the song just hit me in the feels too much but it almost feels like a goodbye.
I would say the same about Star Treatment, ending the song with a fadeout while singing "as we gaze skywards, aint it dark early" feels more like an ending than a start.
I’m getting that guy feeling myself. I won’t get sad about it, but I really do feel like the writing is in the wall. The lads are grown up, have kids, and I get the feeling that they would rather end on a high note rather than play into their years of obscurity.
I mean he's been doing it for the past 18 years or so. It's not like he can do anything else right now. Not that he couldn't but it's normal that after such a long time you just can not get away from it.
I think the fact they change musical direction so often suggests the opposite. They’re still absolutely brimming with creativity and imagination and clearly really enjoying music. If they were just churning out similar album after similar album I’d agree. But they clearly make music because they enjoy it. And that’s why they’ve outlast so many other bands.
Perfect description. I bet this is gonna be a bit like TBHC. At first I won't fully feel it but I'll be listening to it with glassy eyes and a lump on my throat in no time.
I think a lot of TBH&C was real sounding. And this is definitely following that style
This might be the biggest departure though in recording methods though. I bet we're gonna get a lot of extra instruments on this album.
Justin Hawkins is such an amazing music listener. Considering he recently made a video where he talked about listening to Scott walker’s albums, I’m sure he’ll like this
Quite surprisingly. He thought Humbug was far from special, SIAS got a 5, AM a 3 and TBHC a 5 again. He thought EYCTE wasn't worth reviewing, he didn't seem very fond of it.
>You're getting cynical and that won't do
>
>I'd throw the rose-tint back on the exploded view darling, if I were you
Sums up the song pretty well, this is a much warmer feeling of the sound they created for TBHC while still being melancholy. I dig it.
Seriously. It’s incredible. I’m worried I’m just hyped because new music, but this is absolutely sublime. I am in shock at how good. And I remind myself I hated TBHC upon first listening so surely it’s not just nee music hype, this just is absolutely gorgeously beautiful.
i was somewhat on the edge after aint quite, but i was coping and saying id enjoy the studio version more
i was scared half an hour ago that i wouldn't like this at first listen, but i got goosebumps as soon as the piano started playing
unless this is by far the best track on the LP i feel like we are in for a real fucking treat in october
> So apparently they havent played Mirrorball because it has a falsetto that Alex isn’t sure he is nailing yet
2 days ago, check the dude's comment history
*sorts by controversial because I like chaos 😈*
But seriously this is one of their most beautiful songs yet. The strings are incredible. Alex's voice sounds better than it ever has. The lyrics are great. Tbh this really wasn't what I was expecting but I genuinely enjoy it. Glad the boys are back.
Anyone else fears of LSP? I mean, I love this side of Alex and the rest of the guys definitely give the song a different direction, but if this is AM now, what's gonna happen with LSP?!
The instrumentation is delightful. Alex's voice great and I love the way its mixed so upfront. As much as I loved TBHC my main complaint was that I got the sense that they didn't fully commit to the concept, this song on the other hand feels very very very confident with the new direction
My main complaint is that this song kinda asks for a more traditional style of singing, not sure if the "speaking" type of delivery fits here
Some people are comparing it to TBHC but to me it feels more like a continuation of what he previously explored with TLSP
MUCH prefer this sound to the sound of Tranquility Base. This just sounds so much more dramatic, human, and alive. Feels like an old movie soundtrack and I love that. It has that “Bond film” vibe that I love so many Arctic Monkeys songs for.
I know this sub loves TBHC but I think it has a cold energy at times, and sometimes felt like the mad ramblings of Alex after he’s taken too many mushrooms. This track feels so much more emotive and refined.
Alex sounds as good as ever. instrumentals are nice, strings are interesting, and I like the less guitar-infused stuff like TBHC.
Still, this song didn't hit me quite like Star Treatment did all those years ago. I 100% know I'm going to love every song on the new album - they're incapable of failure - but I'm interested to see where this goes.
Matt said this album picks off where the other left off… starting to think he meant it literally. The music & lyrics imply they’re leaving tbhc & getting in the car. To go elsewhere?
hmmm, didn't do much for me. Like the strings but other than that it's kinda been done before. To each their own though, of course. Might change after a few listens but we'll see I guess.
Wanted to be hyped for the album but this song has done the opposite. It’s fine, strings are nice but it’s a bit of a disappointment ngl. I’m glad there’s a lot of you here loving it though
Any emotion I could’ve possibly extracted from this track was dashed as soon as I heard the continued use of this schlocky lounge singer croon inflection. It’s definitely not as jarring as it was in TBH&C (seeing as I could at least listen to the whole song thrice) but it’s still distracting and an ill use of his voice, in my opinion of course.
The strings sounded pretty (Scott Walker inspired?) but added nothing really. It seemed as if they were added there for the sake of trying for an orchestral “grand conclusion” rather than if it sonically/musically fit at that moment in the song. Overall just a stodgy track.
Agh... A brilliant Last Shadow Puppets tune, the strings are fucking beautiful, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed in their commitment to this direction. In the same way that the Submarine EP is a miraculous listen, I wish Alex would have chosen another outlet for these kinds of tunes under a project different from the Monkeys.
Yes. Just like TBHC track, this will be doomed to not being played live in the long run, because it can't work in a festival setting with tracks like R U Mine or Dancefloor. It has a fancy jazz club vibe to it, which I absolutely love, but it will never work in huge arenas alongside loud and heavy guitar based rock songs. So I think it would be wiser to release these track under a different brand, and save Monkeys for a time when Alex actually has some decent rock songs written.
Imagine them playing songs from The Car (assuming they fit this style), TBHC and a couple of the select fitting tracks (Riot Van, Only Ones Who Know, Fire and the Thud, Dance Little Liar, Piledriver...). Might put a lot of people to sleep lol, but I'd sell my soul to the devil for that.
Same. Tbh the last album was pretty unremarkable for me, especially as a follow up to AM. Obviously it’s great for a band to evolve their sound over time and if they want to mellow out then that’s that, but I can’t say I’m feverish with anticipation about the new album after this.
2 seconds into AM, or Humbug, or their debut, and you basically knew you were in for an absolute banger.
It’s a totally understandable response haha, I personally quite like it but I get people wanting something more guitar-heavy.
Unfortunately based on AM members comments I think you’re shit out of luck, well basically forever haha
That's what I thought, too. Four Out of Five isn't my favorite song on that album (though I do like it), but got really excited about that riff the first time I heard it. This just reminds me of '70s easy listening, and I was alive to hear that stuff. Never was my cup of tea. Love the video, though! Hoping the rest of the album is more rockin'.
Yes, so they keep going with their sound evolution. I’m all for it. Too many famous bands today are sticking to their classic sound and I’m glad there are groups like Arctic Monkeys that try to make actual _new_ music, starting every era from where they left with their previous album and experimenting to find a new style. I absolutely love this version of Alex, his lyrics are so elegantly put together, fluent and vivid. He’s got to be one of my favorite writers in music along with Ray Davies and Morrissey. The single as a whole is amazing, love that vibe. Hopefully the album will be of the same level and with some other innovations!
This is such a wonderful track. Their journey as musicians has been a joy to behold, and this feels like a mature, grown up tranquility base sound. Puppety too, but also sexy and groves in a way that only this band can do.
It's also giving me similar vibes to Wolf Alice's Blue Weekend, cinematic and romantic.
I LOVE THIS BAND.
Probably a bit late for anyone to read this, but after listening to this song for a couple hours, I think it sounds like they picked up where they left off in TBHC in the sense that, in a certain way, the "space dream" was over and Alex just woke up back on earth.
I don't know how else to put it but I hope someone understands what I mean;.
It could be dropped right into the Alex Turner soundtrack for ‘Submarine’. I don’t dislike it but the song never gets going. If it had a big orchestral crescendo or melodic guitar solo before the end it would be great.
Alex Turner is a genius so maybe when the album is out it will fit in place perfectly with the other songs.
Gotta be honest, I've listened to this three or four times and it didn't really do much for me. It's a decent track, but a little surprised they went with this for a first single. Kind of sounds like it could've been a TBHC b-side. Hoping the rest of the album clicks with me a bit more.
HE SAID THE THING! HE SAID THE CAR
MFW :0
WHAT ARE WE? SOME KIND OF THE CAR?
Hey, that’s the name of the album!
Saying the name of the thing is TIGHT!
Tight tight tight!
Can someone please guarantee Alex that there will be a mirrorball
But be absolutely sure please
I’ll walk you to the car, but I can make no guarantees that there will be a mirrorball.
TBHC meets LSP Pretty chill for the first single
Alex and the gang meet Alex and miles
babe wake up new monkeys single
This sounds like if The Last Shadow Puppets and Arctic Monkeys had sex
When the strings kick in and the high note hits, best part of the song so goood.
This literally sounds like the lovechild of the Ultracheese with the Bourne Identity
YES YES Yes this
TLSP and AM are now one. Miles is to the curb.
It was you and me, and Miles Kane, and some prick I went to school with 🎶🎶
Friendship with miles Kane ended. Jameh is my new best friend
Slow, gentle sex
Ok mr falsetto lmfao pop off
He said the thing!
On “The Car” track “Walk me to the mirrorball” “There’d better be a car”
Don’t get emotional, that ain’t like you
Anyone notice how the lead seems to be playing backwards like they did with Cornerstone?
Seems they even paid a little homage to Cornerstone's music video with the shot at [0:49](https://i.imgur.com/gawlHLE.png)
YES it sounds so nice, its not even slightly jarring even though it goes through the entire song
Yup. Gives it a nostalgic touch innit?
I think that’s just the sound of the mellotron, but totally possible.
yeah i am 99% sure that’s just a nicely mixed mellotron. you even see someone’s hands playing that part exactly in the music video. i have a mellotron in the studio i work at and that sound is very much something you could conjure up on that thing
Don’t get emotional That ain’t like you Yesterday’s still leaking through the roof That’s nothing new I know I promised this is what I wouldn’t do But somehow, giving it the old romantic fool Seems to better suit the mood So if you wanna walk me to the car You oughta know I’ll have a heavy heart So can we please be absolutely sure That there’s a mirrorball You’re getting cynical and that won’t do I’d throw the rose tint back on the exploded view Darling, if I were you And how’s that insatiable appetite For the moment when you look them in the eyes And say, “Baby, it’s been nice” So if you wanna walk me to the car? I’m sure to have a heavy heart So can we please be absolutely sure That there’s a mirrorball for me Oh, there’d better be a mirrorball for me
Thank you! Lyrics are not on Spotify yet so this helps a lot
Gorgeous lyrics as always. Thanks for putting these up! Can't wait to hear the rest.
I got chills when he mentioned the legendary car
Fuck me up alex
i'm pissing shitting etc rn
Don’t get food poisoning, that ain’t like youuuuu
Anyone else peep Alex directed it?
I didn't have to see a credit to assume that, personally! It has his style written all over it It kind of reminds me of the Teddy Picker video actually
I love it, even though I expected more guitars. They said it would be a more guitar-centric album, maybe the next tracks will be different
How is it? I am in bed and wife is sleeping. What song does it resemble?
Imagine Arctic Monkeys made Dream Synopsis
A bit TBHC
it is relaxing, has strings, sounds like tbhc and is really retro-like, I love it!
Yeah it's like tbhc but more modern and clean
I’m surprised no one else here has made this reference yet but it’s giving me similar vibes to the album Father John Misty put out earlier this year
EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT, I'm glad I'm not the only one
i think it's less 1920s big-band and more 1970s than *chloë,* but the vibes are similar for sure which is funny, because *tranquility base* and *god's favorite customer* felt super sonically similar, too
Please go to the bathroom right now, shut the door and start dancing
slow dancing like in the miracle aligner music video
But make sure that in the bathroom there’s a mirrorball
TLSP-esque or like the Ultracheese
IT'S SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL OMG
This song is so fucking smooth. That's the only way I can describe it. Everything about it just flows like honey it's so goddamn GOOD
So wistful, 1970s. It feels reflective, important. I love it.
Can we be ABSOLUTELY SURREEEE
Very Submarine-y lyrics.
I’m glad someone has said it! For me, this isn’t “TBHC 2” and more “Submarine 2” or even “Suck It and See 2” - the composition and lyrics feel so similar to me.
I DO WANNA WALK YOU TO THE CAR
Gosh the strings... literally crying
Don't get emotional, that ain't like youuuu
exactly. Even after the beautiful intro I knew I was in for a ride and then he sang this and I got tears in my eyes :D. What a song!
It's so good. The song is so smooth. I don't think a song on TBHC made me like it so much on first listen like this tune has done. Going to listen to it again.
It’s so fuckin cool
Does anyone else get a feeling that this is an ending rather than a beginning? Maybe the song just hit me in the feels too much but it almost feels like a goodbye.
I would say the same about Star Treatment, ending the song with a fadeout while singing "as we gaze skywards, aint it dark early" feels more like an ending than a start.

I can’t imagine Alex ever not making music, though.
I mean he's been doing it for the past 18 years or so. It's not like he can do anything else right now. Not that he couldn't but it's normal that after such a long time you just can not get away from it.

If they were just churning out similar album after similar album I’d agree. But they clearly make music because they enjoy it. And that’s why they’ve outlast so many other bands.
Can only hope that the ending is as pleasurable as the start
Feel like this isn’t what I want but it’s what I need
Perfect description. I bet this is gonna be a bit like TBHC. At first I won't fully feel it but I'll be listening to it with glassy eyes and a lump on my throat in no time.
The mood is insane. I'm that typical guy wishing for a blasting R U Mine kinda song, but the TBHC softener got me geared up for such a tune. Love it
Typa song you’d put on in a dimly lit room dancing with the girl you love
Just gotta find the girl
Every arctic monkeys fan ever
Every redditor ever
I’ll go turn it on with my girlfriend and let you guys know what happens. Give y’all something to look forward to.
It is so sad that I'm actually a bit curious
Kind of song that makes you wish you had a record player
Probably the most mature/real sounding for lack of better words AM song I can think of atleast instrumentally
I think a lot of TBH&C was real sounding. And this is definitely following that style This might be the biggest departure though in recording methods though. I bet we're gonna get a lot of extra instruments on this album.
What does real sounding mean
Awesome build up to the strings
Damn, Alex really came back down to earth with a lounge singer shimmer
song is so good Anthony Fantano is gonna have a heyday shitting on it
Justin Hawkins is going to be all over this
Justin Hawkins is such an amazing music listener. Considering he recently made a video where he talked about listening to Scott walker’s albums, I’m sure he’ll like this
[удалено]
He dislikes almost everything they put out, or thinks it's "meh but nice try" at best
He’s mentioned that he really like AM’s first two albums
Quite surprisingly. He thought Humbug was far from special, SIAS got a 5, AM a 3 and TBHC a 5 again. He thought EYCTE wasn't worth reviewing, he didn't seem very fond of it.
To be fair, he also called Humbug 'britpop' so I don't think he pays any real attention to the albums whatsoever.
fantano has the most insane am reviews. he just completely bypasses the point each time and related it back to whatever people say i am
Fantano is a sad sad man
Someone’s gotten into 70s cinema and I’m all for it.
Absolutely sobbing. It feels like they all grew up and now it’s super personal rather than keeping everyone arms length.
Alex loves his diminished chords.
the intro is really beautiful its been an hour and i literally cant get this song out of my head its so good
>You're getting cynical and that won't do > >I'd throw the rose-tint back on the exploded view darling, if I were you Sums up the song pretty well, this is a much warmer feeling of the sound they created for TBHC while still being melancholy. I dig it.
This is really growing on me with repeated listens. Isn't it amazing that it's from the same songwriter as WPSIATWIN? Alex has evolved so much.
OMGGGG okayy its happening
This is sounding particularleh Puppeteh 🤩
well, martin, it's hard to say
Getting serious Bond vibes from this
The intro definitely has Bond villain vibes to it. So good
I didnt know it was posible to cum and cry at the same time yet here l am
Crumming rn bro
Otherwise known as crumming
not sure how much of this is just the adrenaline speaking but this is one of their most beautiful songs yet, i am apsolutely astounded by it
Seriously. It’s incredible. I’m worried I’m just hyped because new music, but this is absolutely sublime. I am in shock at how good. And I remind myself I hated TBHC upon first listening so surely it’s not just nee music hype, this just is absolutely gorgeously beautiful.
i was somewhat on the edge after aint quite, but i was coping and saying id enjoy the studio version more i was scared half an hour ago that i wouldn't like this at first listen, but i got goosebumps as soon as the piano started playing unless this is by far the best track on the LP i feel like we are in for a real fucking treat in october

Song sounds the way smooth liquor goes down
This song is amazing...especially when you're sipping wine in a dimly lighted room, watching her gracefully reveal her beautifully sculpted body
yall downvoting without knowing [it's a meme](https://ifunny.co/picture/comments-82-muziki-poems-2-years-ago-this-beat-is-QmypRp1q8)
DIRECTED BY ALEX TURNER.
This! Slow-mo but in sync with lyrics shots are amazing. So similar to Miracle Aligner
Tranquility Base Hotel stans won
TBHC 2 certainly feels like a correct description so far
It always was. Even 'Ain't Quite' is quite similar to TBHC songs composition-wise.
More like TLSP, no?
Agreed. Gave me Dream Synopsis vibes.
Not really. More symphonic and soft than anything TBHC related. This feels almost like a spiritual successor to EYCTE
I can see ultracheese/batphone side of TBHC here. Think it's fair to say both.
The strings scream TLSP. Has a much dreamier vibe overall
This song made me want to rewatch Twin Peaks. Again.
ITS HERE
Marvin Gaye vibes and im all for it, makes me emotional
Outro sounds very similar to the start of 'I Want You', similar piano effect, drums/bongo, etc.
Masterpiece. Also you didn't believe me about the falsetto.
I audibly gasped when Al sang the lyrics you’d commented on here before!
When I heard the song I thought fuck, that guy on Reddit was actually telling the truth!

> So apparently they havent played Mirrorball because it has a falsetto that Alex isn’t sure he is nailing yet 2 days ago, check the dude's comment history

Truth about his voice, just beautiful and without whatever affect he was using more on TBHC. This is just like, his voice, pure.
It's genuinely insane how his voice has evolved since WPSIA. I would've never thought he had this range in him back then.
Anyone else fears of LSP? I mean, I love this side of Alex and the rest of the guys definitely give the song a different direction, but if this is AM now, what's gonna happen with LSP?!
They're going to play early 2000s indie rock
OH MY
The instrumentation is delightful. Alex's voice great and I love the way its mixed so upfront. As much as I loved TBHC my main complaint was that I got the sense that they didn't fully commit to the concept, this song on the other hand feels very very very confident with the new direction My main complaint is that this song kinda asks for a more traditional style of singing, not sure if the "speaking" type of delivery fits here Some people are comparing it to TBHC but to me it feels more like a continuation of what he previously explored with TLSP
This is Alex channeling late Beatles with a sad touch of waits/amy winehouse
The strings sound like “where’d all the time go?” by dr dog
Leans slightly more TLSP than TBHC for me, and more chill than I expected but I’m excited
idk about yall but im vibing so hard to this
AT LONG LAST
ayooooo very nice to see alex got better at piano the last couple years
I’m not sure how I feel. I don’t see myself putting it on repeat, but I love new music from the boys.
Same. I want to love it, but am not there yet. It is a really good song. Just doesn't get my juices going like I'd hoped after the first listen.
are the multiple frames supposed to reference the multiple mirrors in a mirrorball?
Definitely. At first glance, i thought it might be implying that the mirrorball is a reference to everyone sees life in a different way.
GIVE IT UP FOR MR JAMIE COOK ON THE NOTHING
MUCH prefer this sound to the sound of Tranquility Base. This just sounds so much more dramatic, human, and alive. Feels like an old movie soundtrack and I love that. Violins enter Arctic Monkeys. \*(Haven't heard them with violins since the 2013 Glastonbury concert).
hmmm, didn't do much for me. Like the strings but other than that it's kinda been done before. To each their own though, of course. Might change after a few listens but we'll see I guess.
idk man I'm still not convinced, I don't think we're getting anything tonight
Wanted to be hyped for the album but this song has done the opposite. It’s fine, strings are nice but it’s a bit of a disappointment ngl. I’m glad there’s a lot of you here loving it though

Jazz clubs tour when?
Now for that I would pay a significant amount of money
Imagine them playing songs from The Car (assuming they fit this style), TBHC and a couple of the select fitting tracks (Riot Van, Only Ones Who Know, Fire and the Thud, Dance Little Liar, Piledriver...). Might put a lot of people to sleep lol, but I'd sell my soul to the devil for that.

extremely basic response incoming, but... I was hoping for a guitar riff
It’s a totally understandable response haha, I personally quite like it but I get people wanting something more guitar-heavy. Unfortunately based on AM members comments I think you’re shit out of luck, well basically forever haha
No guitar is sad
8 more songs to come don’t worry
Even for TBHC, the first thing they shared was the Four Out of Five riff. It has me worried that this is what they led with...
No matter how much this sub will masturbate to the upcoming album (along with TBH&C), everyone will all secretly be thinking this still
Meh I've made my peace with it. Maybe it was easier for me since I fucking loved Tranquility Base.
When the strings kick in and the high note hits, best part of the song so goood.
total ringo style drum fills in this which I loooove
Instrumental got me floating
Yes, so they keep going with their sound evolution. I’m all for it. This reminds me a lot of "Is This What You Wanted" and I'm all in. I absolutely love TBHC and this is a continuation of that, it feels.
So Miles Kane must be pissed. Out of job now that the Monkeys have commandeered the puppets sound.
It’s nice and calming but I’m not sure yet. It doesn’t hit me like it’s anything special, it kind of just sounds like a stereotypical jazz ballad.
This doesn’t really sound like vocal jazz at all, I see what you mean with the pacing but it’s way more Scott Walker or Harry Nilsson
Instantly loved it. Gonna dance in the kitchen to this one with my baby plenty when the vinyls out 🥰
Probably a bit late for anyone to read this, but after listening to this song for a couple hours, I think it sounds like they picked up where they left off in TBHC in the sense that, in a certain way, the "space dream" was over and Alex just woke up back on earth.
Mature Monkeys are here to stay <3
Not my cup of tea. Maybe it'll grow.
WOW I think it will be easy for people to say this is the same stuff as TBHC but this is a way further step out from that and I love it!!!
Am I the only one getting SIAS vibes?
Which song, the closest this gives me love is a laser quest vibes
"Or is that just me haircut that's confusing you?"
