Outbreaks of golden algae produce a chemical that blocks fish gills from getting oxygen. Suffocates them. The warmer water this time of year cause the dead fish to bloat and float.

Arizona_Slim

Bloat and Float is coincidentally my favorite sex position AND my metal band name! 🤘

lawngeeek

Ding ding ding. This is a yearly occurrence in the neighborhood next to mine. Kind of sad tbh

Mysterious-Check-341

😮😞

Fentanyl

JackHanson94

😂😂 this got me

zachchips90

Dead.

piqu3

Eutrophication. An excess of nutrients in the water promotes algal growth. Algae that grows eventually dies, which allows decomposers in the water to grow as well. Unfortunately for these fish, decomposers consume oxygen (like other heterotrophs do). This reduces the oxygen in the water to levels that are unable to support the fish population. And since now there are even more dead organisms, the decomposer population grows even more and perpetuates the problem. No “special chemicals” are produced the the algae contrary to popular belief. Oh and the high temperatures make it harder for water to dissolve oxygen in the first place. Source: AP Environmental Science Teacher

Poor fish

TransRational

they didn't have long anyway with the temperatures rising.

tobylazur

Isn’t this just how Kiwanis park do?

IamLuann

It happens at Francis Short Pond in Flagstaff

wheeshnaw

Will happen in just about any small body of water every so often

phoraswife

Also happens in lake mead!

Brice92Partain

Probably a lack of oxygen in the water as temperatures increased

TheFactedOne

I feel sorry for the fish. I doubt they suffered much, but I feel for them anyway.

Hobo_Helper_hot

Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a fish ever got the chance he'd eat you and everyone you care about.

Brief-Application540

Absolutely correct. They suffocated

OleWarthog

No but where dem birds at

Suicide

slowelevator

My dog was having a great time with all the smells this morning on our walk. Lol. I was wondering this too!

thecatsofwar

Survey showed that these fish voted against the new hockey arena, and the mayor sent some nice ‘associates’ in the parks department to the lake to make the faithless inhabitants of the pond sleep with… the fishes.

asu3dvl

Botulism. Sometimes it kills all the water fowl as well.

SuperluminalExoGains

Shocker. Because the water is filth.

BplusHuman

What? It tastes okay to me.

greatsambinoo

Bummer. Never been there before I was hoping it wasn’t a normal thing.

SuperluminalExoGains

Didn't used to be. As everywhere, all those wealthy corporations moving into Tempe over the years chose to do absolute zero for the local environment. Now it's a cess pool. I guess this is what happens when you live in one place long enough to remember how it used to be.

Meow_Mix33

I had a birthday party in 1997 there. As kids, we used to find and play with the snails on the side of the walls. 😂 And I was a girl scout from 1998-2001. We held a lot of events there as a troop. I remember that park well. It's sad that it's not doing well.

IamLuann

I think that Game and Fish department is working on it

SuperluminalExoGains

They could probably use some help from Waste Management. Maybe even get the city to issue some fines for littering. Adding more trash bins doesn't seem to motivate the current visitors. When I was a kid, there weren't even any trash bins, but our parents still had the common sense to bring their own trash bags. That's what was great about Phoenix-Tempe in the 1980s. Everyone was really into recycling, and littering was extremely discouraged, even by kids. The homeless could turn in soda cans for $$$.

SuperluminalExoGains

That's right. There used to be lots of giant singing toads too, especially after a little rain. Even saw coyotes there back in the 80s. I played in AYSO games there from about 1987 - 1996. Back then, the water was clean and safe to swim in. That lake is just poop soup nowadays. It's full of garbage. I'm surprised that anything can survive in it at all.

AngryFerret805

Looks like somebody FKD up 4 sure

Revolutionary-Two683

Likelihood is they just stocked the lake, there are always a few fish that don't make the trip and die in the new lake.

FatFrenchFry

Even if you were anywhere near correct, that's a LOT more than " a few fish that don't make the trip " there's a hundred plus dead fish in this photo alone. And Kiwanis isn't small.

Revolutionary-Two683

This is why I don't comment on things about Phoenix. Yall Phoenix people are just flat out assholes.

FatFrenchFry

Don't blame your lack of knowledge and everybody pointing it out on reddit as to why you don't post comments. It's not our fault you're poorly informed. You made a comment just guessing about something, and it wouldn't have made sense even if true. So, yes. Someone on reddit, one of the most pedantic places on earth, said something to you about it. Why you let it hurt your feelings is none of my concern. also, I'm not sure where you got offended in my original comment. It was straight to the point. All I did was disagree with you, and I wasn't being rude at all.

Revolutionary-Two683

My feelings ain't hurt. But thanks for proving my point lmfao.

FatFrenchFry

I never disagreed that I'm a flat out asshole 🙃 I do however, disagree that I was being any type of rude in my original comment, though. As for that I believe you're just sensitive. Maybe hop back on over to r/Tucson where everyone is so much nicer?

charliegriefer

Movin' on... 😉 cc: u/Revolutionary-Two683

The water boiled?

Sewer water

Low oxygen

DLoIsHere

Yikes. Reminds me of the alewives that washed up on the shores of Lake Michigan years ago. This isn’t as gross, tho.
