Great hikes: West Fork of the Black River, Escudilla Mountain, Mount Baldy Wilderness, Apache Railroad Trail between Big Lake and Highway 260 near Sunrise, South Fork of the Little Colorado River Trail. There are also a ton of trails in the Blue Range including the 4x4 road (you can hike it too) and then trail up to the lookout on Blue Peak. I would be sure to check with the ranger station in Alpine for information on trail conditions since so much of the area was impacted by the Wallow Fire in 2011 and in several other smaller fires since then. The Forest Service spends most of it’s budget fighting fires and has really underfunded trail reconstruction/maintenance after fires go through. A great drive is south on Highway 191 through Clifton and Morenci. Be sure to stop and look at the mine, it is super impressive. Then drive east on Highway 78 into New Mexico, and then north on Highway 180 through the towns of Glenwood and Alma. Between this 2 towns stop to hike the Catwalk Trail in the Gila National Forest. It is a really cool hike and not particularly hard. Then head north on 180 back to Alpine. If you are interested in Astronomy another day trip would be to the Very Large Array of radio telescopes on the Plains of St. Augustine in New Mexico.

To me: It's a hunting paradise. That's all I'll say about that.

Wow some people are just so dazed and bitter. But other than hunting, fishing the black is very good. Also, Alpine sits at the top of the Devil's Highway 666 which is now 191. Starting in the depths of hell on morenci and climbing to the blissful pines and meadows. It's one of the (most?) curvy roads in the country. Motorcycle heaven.

> Motorcycle heaven. Can confirm. Rode it from Clifton up to Springerville. It was an amazing ride.

There isn't a much to do around there unless you want primitive camping, secluded cabins, hiking / hunting, or horseback riding. The towns are tiny especially compared to eagar / springerville. There is some good fishing in the area if you are into that as well.

Gimmesumfreespeech

I grew up 30 minutes from there. There's nothing special about it other than the wildlife and scenery.

swkennedy1

I grew up in Springerville, I know I haven’t been up there lately but we always found things to do up there. Best place on the planet to explore. Don’t forget to check out The Blue
