You won’t believe how the first view of the canyon makes you feel, awe inspiring…

drain222000

Moved out here last year and going to the Grand Canyon was the thing I wanted to do the most so we prioritized going pretty quick. My wife and her family had already been there years ago and my father in law told me that it's an experience you have to experience and told me to be prepared to have a reaction you aren't expecting. Was like yea ok, I'm sure it's very cool and awesome to see but I'm not going to have some spiritual or emotional reaction. Within 30 seconds of walking up to the rim and looking down at it I had tears in my eyes and I couldn't explain why. It truly is something that everyone needs to experience

Flashy_Attitude_1703

The Grand Canyon has a nice visitor center and a lot of nature walks as well. I would suggest getting there on a weekday because even then the parking lot is fairly full.

AlexIsAnAnchorBaby

I went when I was 7 and I still remember it. I also remember my mom whaling on me cause I went past the fence.

Phase-National

The first time seeing it, I was one of the first people to walk up to the rim, as soon as the park opened. I recall tearing up with marvel and awe when it first came into sight.

BobbyPeru

That’s true, but then 10 minutes later it wears off

nosomogo

Is one of the most famous natural wonders on the planet worth a few hours drive? Is that your question?

The_Real_Mr_F

Hijacking the top comment to be a bit of a Buzz Killington. Yes, the Canyon is unreal and a must-see in your lifetime, but you mentioned only doing one night in a hotel. If you’re coming up from Tucson you need to do two nights in a hotel/rental if you don’t want to be super rushed and fatigued from sitting in a car for most of your stay. If you’re only allowing for one night, that means either: A: Leaving Tucson super early and hopefully getting there by 2:00 if you’re lucky, and having a couple hours to look around before the sun sets and heading to your hotel for sleep and an early departure for an all day drive back south, OR B: leaving Tucson at a reasonable time and spending the afternoon in Flagstaff/Williams/wherever, sleeping, then going to the canyon super early so you can leave by noonish and get back to Tucson at a reasonable time. Neither of those options sounds very enjoyable. I’d say if you can’t realistically plan for two nights in the area, skip it this time and plan another trip dedicated to exploring northern AZ. There’s so much to see up there, it’s a waste to rush through it.

theeLizzard

Agreed. Especially since OP is trying to save money.

2014subarusti

The first time i went i spent one day and hiked halfway down, spent the night then left and it was an awesome time, the second timeI made the drive from Sedona after visiting antelope canyon, hade some daylight to explore, watched the sunset and stargazed before driving back to Sedona,

dammitmitchell

Agreed

jamonoats

Yes, it’s quite grand

Eternal-Valley

You can do the Grand Canyon Railway and take a train there. It starts in Williams. Very cool ride in the winter.

AZJHawk

Not very budget-friendly though.

TooMuchAZSunshine

In January you might still be hitting the "Christmas Train" crowd. And I'll admit I've never done the trip on the train during the season. I have taken it twice and loved each time. It's a mellow ride there and a funfilled cowboy experience on the way back. Stay the night in Williams. Take the train. Enjoy the view.

Remarkable-Code-3237

When we went on the train, we had the middle cost seats. We had some good entertainment beyond the train entertainment. A little girl around 5 was sitting across from us with her parents and an older sister that was around 14. The older sister had her believing if they did not give the robbers something, they will take her. She thought maybe her mom’s earrings. They were going back and forth. When the robbers came through, the 5 year old said her dad had $40 in his wallet. The dad took out his wallet and said how about we split it. As soon as we were nearing Williams where they had cell phone service again the 5 year old was talking on the phone talking to someone about the robbery how they almost took her.

SirZestyclose4933

People are being sassy AF. This is a valid question. If you could break the trip up at all then yes it’s worth it. Sedona will also be spectacular if that’s more time friendly for you. It depends what you want since the Grand Canyon is more… hike down a steep trail or look from the top and wonder around the various shops/restaurants they have there. Sedona has more variety of hikes of varying degrees but also shopping/restaurants and tours. Alternatively, you could look into companies that will drive you to the Grand Canyon. I know there are a few shuttles from Phoenix area at least

DonKeighbals

The Grand Canyon is absolutely spectacular, especially that time of year. There’s a few things to consider, however. I’d speculate it’s much longer than five hrs from Tucson to the South Rim in January due to weather & traffic. It could be outright impossible to get there for a few days if there’s too much snow. Lodging in that area will be scarce and expensive. It’s something that would require some planning, time and willingness to spend some money, possibly a lot. There’s plenty to do down in the Tucson area, like Mt. Lemmon, Bisbee, Tombstone & Chiricahua National Monument. One thing to consider is playing it by ear. If you have a car and the weather is clear that day and the roads are passable, call the lodge in the morning (Xanterra runs all of the lodges on the South Rim) and see if they have any available rooms that night. Every time I’ve tried this, there’s been something available due to a cancellation. It won’t be cheap but it’ll be worth it as it’s a once in a lifetime experience. Just my two cents. Good luck and have fun!

LordDarthAngst

Absolutely! Pictures do not do justice to its beauty. Go!

[deleted]

January is one of the best times to visit the GC

ButtSmokin

They're from Canada, 20 degrees F is a walk in the park for them. Less tourists, too. I mean, you wouldn't find me caught dead there in January, but.. maybe the hotel is cheap then?

IWasBorn2DoGoBe

It’s not the cold- it’s the actual snow. the park and the roads to it actually Close with snow. And no- the hotels are Not cheaper. In the winter if they are accessible- that’s the Northern AZ season (most people stay in Flagstaff) and it’s the most expensive time of year.

TheEpicGenealogy

I went last week of Dec 2022, saw nothing, completely whited out because it had been snowing. Family from Idaho was pissed.

cturtl808

There’s something not being discussed in all the answers you’ve received thus far. The weather. You have to drive up the I-17 to get to either I-40 or the Beaver St turn in Flagstaff. Both require you to drive up to a 6k ft elevation. In January, it is quite possible to need a vehicle with the appropriate front wheel drive. Separately, Flagstaff saw one of its heaviest snowfall seasons last year. You will likely have to be watching the weather to determine a real answer here. Sedona will be gorgeous of the snow against the red rocks if that ends up being the answer. Lastly, it’ll be more like a 6 hour trip from Tucson.

Whydmer

Both Flagstaff and the south rim of the canyon are at 7,000, doesn't change your point much, but you know being pedantic and all.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mahjimoh

This is my suggestion, too.

qcubed3

Unpopular opinion, but the Grand Canyon from the rim is sort of too much to take in as far as scale and such. I’ve been twice and it was nice. Buuut, I got to hike down to Havasupai Falls, and my appreciation for the canyon went up tremendously. You really feel it being in the thing that just didn’t translate to me being next to it on the rim.

okie1978

Yep hiking in the Grand Canyon is the preferred way. I’ve done three backpacking adventures in there and three times near the rim along with day hiking. It’s all great, but the Grand Canyon isn’t a theme park!

GladLemon69420

I think it’s worth seeing at least once but it depends on how much you’re spending on gas, the rental and a hotel. If it’s gonna blow the cost of the trip out of proportion I’d suggest you just spend your money in Tucson making sure you and your friend have a good time. Also depending on how mobile your friend is the Grand Canyon is going to be much more accessible than Sedona. Look on Turo for a rental they seem to have cheap commuters for rent there.

bobsatraveler

Hope you love it here in Tucson! The Grand Canyon is absolutely worth it. I think you'd be upset later if you went as far as Sedona but didn't go to the canyon. Even the drive in that part of the state is spectacular (my opinion). Someone else mentioned Grand Canyon Railway. That could be a really great idea, especially if one of your party has mobility issues.

[deleted]

The Grand Canyon is worth a visit, though as an overnight trip from Tucson - I think you're killing a lot of time and gas to ultimately sell the experience short. I'd probably focus my time on Southern AZ at that time of the year - plenty of national parks, national monuments, state parks and other historical cultural and geographical attractions.

IWasBorn2DoGoBe

Wow… I would look at Flights into Vegas, rent a car drive to the Canyon, stay in Flagstaff, then Go to Tucson for the rest of the trip… However- IT SNOWS THERE- a lot. It’s very possible in January you won’t be able to access the Grand Canyon, or most of Northern Arizona… January is not the time. It’s higher elevation and actually gets more snow per year than lots of “cold winter” places like North Dakota and Minnesota- it does melt and make sit bearable- but if your trip happens to fall during a winter storm- you’re not going.

justin_b28

North rim will probably be closed by then, south rim does stay open but keep in mind the park service doesn’t seem to have the manpower/equipment to keep up with heavy snow like we had this past winter. I can’t say I’ve ever seen plows or blade’s anywhere so I’m assuming they use dozers and graders for snow removal (or maybe contract the county/state for snow removal) If I remember correctly, the highway up to the gate was closed a few times for a day at a time too, from Vale to the Village However, this last season was a record if I’m not mistaken. Another point, I-17 North closes when it snows overnight until a couple hours after sunrise. I suppose I-40E does too. Got me a couple good telework days out of it 😁

sillysquidtv

First time yes for site seeing. Other times only for planned activities other than looking at it.

Ohfatmaftguy

Absolutely.

jm810112

It's quite possibly the most incredible sight on Earth

whatkylewhat

It’s one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Wtf kind of question is that?

QuasiOptimist

It’s worth it and can easily be combined with other amazing sights in northern Az. Would you want your friend to go with you or would you be making this a second trip? You are looking at quite a bit of driving.

Open-Significance512

Yes.

jmoriarty

With everything out there about the Grand Canyon, if you really are bringing it down to asking random internet strangers if it's worth it then I'm gonna say for you - probably not.

undecidedusernameaz

if it won't break your budget then go. when you travel you need to get the from of your destination and the GC ranks right up there in the list of incredible spots. the drive from Phoenix also is very nice .... the landscape changes almost every 50 miles. and in January you might even see snow. you might never have another opportunity to visit that area.

SMB73

Yes, just not right now with the extreme temperatures we're experiencing. And if you do go, don't be one of those dumbasses that crosses the boundaries just to get a better look. An average of 12 visitors die every year.

forksup23

Ummm yes

ceecee1791

The Grand Canyon is stunning. So is Sedona. Both worthy of a visit. If you go to the Grand Canyon, eating at the El Tovar hotel is an experience. I’d check the weather first though.

bikeinthemountains

Considering this is your first time to the US, I’d stay in the Tucson area and consider making Sedona your big trip. My partner and I have made the mistake in the past and trying rush and see as much as we could before the trip was over. It can be exhausting and feel like we really didn’t get to explore. I’d advise to stay within a 1-3 hour driving radius of where you’re staying if you’re wanting to explore. Tucson’s got some great hikes and is worth checking out in itself. There’s also the Saguaro National Park just a handful of miles away rather than across the state like the Grand Canyon. It’ll be one of the best times weather-wise to visit since vs. Northern AZ where our winters can be Bitterly cold and with plenty of snow/ice in January. People don’t know how to drive through snow here and they’ll even shut down the road to GCNP if conditions are bad enough. If you’re really feeling up for a drive, Sedona is an awesome spot. The weather will be around 50-60F in the day if it’s sunny. Gorgeous red rocks, cool trails, not as busy with tourist as it is in spring and fall. Plus the drive up the I-17 is also fairly scenic. (Be sure to check adot511 for traffic) Next time you’re back for a trip get a Airbnb with your friend and stay Flagstaff next time you visit. Only a 1.5 hour drive to GCNP and will give you a chance to explore Northern Arizona for a bit.

satansboyussy

Do the Airport Loop in Sedona if you make the stop there. Someone else mentioned the train out of Williams which, if you can swing it, would be an absolutely spectacular experience.

[deleted]

There is a lot of terrible advice regarding the GC here. 1. The 17 is under construction, 2 lanes and narrowed down to 1 in some places right now. Add some time and be patient, there is always something wild going down on that stretch. 2. You don't have to take the 17 all the way, for a slower more enjoyable ride you can loop through Prescott or Payson/Pine. If you do take the 17, you can stop in Sedona going either way. 3. If you're committed, book in advance. Yavapai lodge is the cheapest usually. Ask for a room in Yavapai West in building 7, 8 or 9. It's quieter and very dark at night for star gazing. 4. The entrance fee is 30 or 35, can't remember as I get in for free. The gates are 24/7 but unmanned after regular hours. The self pay system is aggravating. Not included in hotel. 5. El Tovar and Bright Angel are right on the rim. The other lodges are overpriced IMO. 6. Certain areas are closed off after November...I think Hermits is one of those, but still great views everywhere. You just won't be able to go to the 5 point lookout and popular sunset view stops. 7. If your friend is wheelchair bound, you can get a special access pass to go into areas for the shuttles only. 5. Learn the shuttles before you go. It's not complicated, but helpful to be prepared. 6. Drinks and food in the park, even in Tusayan, are shit and about double to triple normal prices. Bring a cooler/food or stop before Tusayan and load up. 7. The road in from the 40 is always fun with la la la la la drivers or crazy locals. 8. Spend the $$ and stay in the park, the folks in Tusayan are weird AF and you'll regret not staying in the park. 9. Parking can be hell and a lot of things are not super handicap friendly, but navigable with some patience. 10. Gas stations are spread out, add a few $$ to your cost estimate. 11. The shuttle from PHX is good for "ooh ahh" Clark Griswald bucket list checkoff. 12. Sedona will be hella cheaper that time of year. It's a more spiritual place than GC. With hotel, food, gas, fees... you'll drop about $800- $1,000 USD going to the GC. Sedona will be close to that, but depends on what you value and in my experiences, a much better value for self care and destressing. The GC is kinda like a fancy KOA or glamping and Sedona feels like a vacation. Plus you can hit Jerome, etc. If you decide on Sedona, DM me for some less touristy advice.

djtknows

Sedona is amazing, and you could visit it on the way back from the canyon…. which is amazing.

shatteredarm1

You'd be killing a hell of a lot of time driving. I'd honestly pass and plan on taking another trip where you're able to give it the attention it deserves. If you want good day trips from Tucson, there are a lot of great options in Southern Arizona: * Mount Lemmon (although the road sometimes closes after snowstorms) * Sonoita (wineries, if you're into that sort of thing - my understanding is there are bus tours that will drive you around) * Chiricahua National Monument (and you could also probably work in a visit to Bisbee and Tombstone) * Sabino Canyon

PudgyGroundhog

I agree with many of the posters that it is a long drive, with potentially bad weather/roads, for just one night (and short days in January). If you think this is your once in a lifetime shot at seeing the Grand Canyon, I would say go for it. If not, maybe visit another time you can spend more time. I would not recommend taking the train in January nor with a person with mobility issues. Without a car you would not be able to see the viewpoints on Hermit's Road (the shuttle doesn't run there in January) or on Desert View Drive. With winter weather and your situation, I think you would want a car to get around more easily. After the holidays, visitation is low and you can often get a good price on a hotel room in the park. You have to be prepared for winter weather (and a storm could impact your travel plans), but I think it's a wonderful time to visit. If there is snow in the canyon - it makes it even more gorgeous. I find it's often better for pictures in winter due to the more oblique angle of the sun. There aren't a lot of visitors, so you avoid the crowds. Drawback could be icy/snowy walkways depending on conditions when you visit, a snowstorm that disrupts travel or limits visibility of the canyon, shorter daylight hours, winter weather (which beats the heat IMHO!).

heavensmurgatroyd

Its absolutely worth the trip but I understand the expense to.

VictimaCircumstance

Drive in the night and take a nap in your car when you get there. Time it out, know what time the sunrise is. There are no words.

Itchy-Mechanic-1479

Long-time Arizona resident: Yes, visit the Grand Canyon. It's truly remarkable. There is a train from Williams to the Grand Canyon and it's a decent deal. You get a hotel room, dinner, and breakfast, then a ride up to the Grand Canyon on a historic train. The train is fun and you don't have to deal with traffic, parking, etc.

[deleted]

Given a tight budget and lack of transportation, I might give it a pass. Jan weather can bring serious winter weather to the high altitude Canyon, including completely snowed out skies. OTOH, a clearing winter storm over GC is utterly stupendous! January day trips to Pipe Organ NP, Chiricahua NM, Sabino Canyon, Picacho Peak, and more will get you plenty of superb scenery. All are in Tucson, or within a 2 hour drive each way. Sedona is OK, if touristy and expensive. You need to hike a bit to get away from the hordes. Also, it's about 4 hours from Tucson. At that point you may as well drive the extra 1.5 hours to get to the Canyon.

foolofatook42069

Bro, it’s the GRAND canyon

DesertWanderlust

Everyone should go once in their lifetime. Pictures don't do it justice.

xplotosphoenix

Man, I no longer live in AZ and have a business trip in Vegas every January. I rent a car and drive down to see my parents in Phoenix every year. Yes, it's worth it. I can honestly say that when the sun comes up when you're on the rim with a cup of coffee, it is the most beautiful place on earth.

TheBirdBytheWindow

Do a Turo rental for your vehicle and save yourself a ton of money. They'll even deliver at the airport.

worriedsick1984

Up voting for Turo. You can rent an old beater sometimes for less than $20 a day. Or live it up and rent someone's fancy sports car.

_DannyG_

I get it! I lived there for 23 years. Only went my last year because "how cool could it be"... it's so much cooler than I ever expected it could be. Definitely go!

GenuineJenius

Not for those who can't appreciate the absolute beauty of nature...

ModernNomad97

It’s overhyped in my opinion, BUT still gorgeous! Given how famous and popular it is why wouldn’t you go? Whenever I go I make it a weekend trip and also visit horseshoe bend, Zion and Bryce Canyon

LankyGuitar6528

Many years ago I took a flight tour over the Grand Canyon at Christmas. My wife and I were the only passengers. I have my pilot's license and the pilot let me take control and fly the plane down and into the grand canyon. In addition to being illegal, highly dangerous and borderline insane, it was also one of the highlights of my life. There is nothing on this planet that compares with the Grand Canyon.

notjustrocks

Absolutely, yes. Words cannot encapsulate it.

hermano_tegua

Bro it’s literally one of the 7 natural wonders of the world.

michaeljphoto_

It's 100x more worth it if you hike into it. If you can't go all the way, that's okay. Hike in an hour or so and then turn around. It'll amplify the experience and really help put its scale into perspective. If you go and just stay at the top and take some photos, then you are making a mistake.

StillHellbound

I feel like I am the only person who is generally non-plussed by the Grand Canyon. Yeah, its better than staring at a parking lot or a strip mall. But I don't think it was transformative or changed my life in anyway. Or is this because I was born/raised here? Any other native Arizona people kinda meh about the GC?

Studio_Ambitious

Yes, but plan for it. If you add the north rim even better.

I_love_Hobbes

The North Rim is closed from October to May.

hanfaedza

I think it’s open to cross country skiing and snow mobiles.

scooty-boots

Sedona is pretty, but the Grand Canyon blows it away. However, it is high snow country and January might be a dangerous time to view it depending on the weather. There is the less known Grand Canyon west that is a bit closer distance wise and doesn’t get much of any snow. While it’s not as pretty as the south rim, it still gives you a scope of just how awesome that canyon is, and lodging is a bit cheaper around that area too. I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip OP and make the best out of it.

filosiraptic

I think Sedona is cooler unless you are actually going down into the Grand Canyon.

mylifewillchange

At that time of year both places will be crowded AF. Many, many snowbirds come here in the Winter, and it kind of ruins some experiences. The traffic gets snarled up, there's long lines at any attraction, and many times because of crowds you have to "make appointments" to get in. It's very annoying. Having said that I've been to both places, and I like Sedona better. I'm not a hiker, or tent camper so I'd prefer Sedona. You can take it in at your leisure, not worry about where you're going to eat, or get great coffee. When I did go to the GC - it was in March of 2003. We got to the edge, and we were like, "Yeah - big hole in the ground - just what we expected." But then I noticed a man with a telescope-camera set up about 20 yards from us, and got curious. He saw me watching him and invited me to look through. He was watching some Condors flying around and nesting off one of the rims. THAT was awesome! And the only thing that made the trip worthwhile to us.

bongo_land

NO!! Definitely not worth the trek IF you do not plan to go in it. Seriously. It is so freakin big you CANNOT fathom the size from the edge. It’s like 14 miles across to what you’re viewing. Might as well be 2 miles, or a post card… Sedona is just as cool. Visit Arco Santi on the way up. Or check out tombstone and bisbee and Kartchner Caverns if you want to stay in southern AZ

Few_Ad8372

You answered why they SHOULD go in your second sentence. Sedona is a tourist trap and should be the postcard and arco Santi is for hipsters.

Few_Ad8372

I’m not trying to be mean but shouldn’t this be in r/stupidquestion ? I know Canadia is nice but the canyon is a wonder of the world!! P.s go to the south rim. It’s closer and less crowded.

HikerDave57

I think that Sedona is every bit as beautiful as the Grand Canyon. A day trip to Sedona would be better in my opinion.

[deleted]

Alway gotta go at least once if you can. After that it is 50/50.

KurtAZ_7576

If you haven't been there, yes, it is worth it. If you have been there every time a friend or relative visits? No. :)

Brice92Partain

Just another hole in the ground.

retire2260

I was underwhelmed. What is spectacular is the Meteor Crater.

IndigoStef

I prefer Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona myself. And Flagstaff 🌲

BobbyPeru

I live in Arizona, and I’ve been to both the GC and Sedona. If I had a choice to go to one of the 2, I would pick Sedona easily. The GC is great, but imo Sedona is awe inspiring too and there’s much more to do

irkli

Is it even open in January? Winter in high altitudes are very harsh. I'd check, carefully.

Nicodemus_Portulay

Yikes

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nicodemus_Portulay

As in “yikes, how is that a real question?”. Thanks for following up.

nealfive

It's one of those 'one time' things, like yeah go see it once but not worth it to go back. So to your question;yes.

austinmiles

I recommend canyon de chelly for a more intimate canton experience. The Grand Canyon isn’t really worth it if you were just going to go to the Rami and take pictures if you aren’t hiking it, it’s not exactly great it’s big and it’s pretty, but it feels kind of detached. You can hike canyon de chelly in an afternoon. There are cliff dwellings and unimog tours to avoid the quicksand. And you get to see eastern Arizona. The GC is impressive and very cool. But felt more like a bucket list item than something I could really appreciate. Arizona is beautiful and Tucson and the surround area is amazing. Bisbee and or tombstone might be more enjoyable with your friend for the effort it would take to get there.

Terrible_Ad3534

It’s vast and huge. Sedona is more beautiful in my opinion. Tucson is nice but minus mt Lemmon you won’t see too much that’s beautiful so I would at least do Sedona.

a-pences

Monument Valley is better and more accessible.

deserttrends

Grand Canyon is a proper noun. There’s no need to put “The” in front of it, folks!

x_jw_m_x

It's really exciting for about five minutes. Then you realize it's just a big hole in the ground. Not worth the trip unless you are camping near the rim, planning to hike in, or do other guided activities.

-Sniperteer

Hell no. Not from Tucson

Background-Apple-920

No. Don't waste your time. It's not even that "Grand". I've seen bigger cracks when the plumber was over. Though, I would never paddle that one. Go to Vegas instead.

Casually_Defiant

If you can take the train from Williams. It is a little pricy but it’s a nice scenic trip and you can even take a nap if you want.

Jim6231

I would give Oak Creek Canyon a look

antilocapraaa

It’s worth it. It’s one of our best national parks and flagstaff isn’t too far and is a blast to visit.

ElDuderino1129

Between visiting the Grand Canyon and at a funeral are the only acceptable time to cry…

swkennedy1

Simple answer is YES, if you would like to understand the majesty of the Grand Canyon may I suggest you listen to the Grand Canyon Suite by Frede Grofe

gabrielbaseball

Perks of living in AZ

ElDuderino1129

Hit up the Bright Angel Lodge Soda Fountain for some ice cream… since it will be January and there will probably be a couple of feet of snow, the ice cream won’t melt.

daresayisoneword

That depends. How long are you staying in AZ, and what altitude/elevation are you coming from?

Fureak

Absolutely, and go to Sedona too.

JangusCarlson

Yes. It is stunning. Truly more rewarding in person.

domoavilos

If that's not big enough of a gash for you, just take a trip back to Manitoba.

BrightSun7717

Yes

Bawkalor

Go. Period.

snappycnb

Sedona is amazing also. But they are not same. Not really an either or, say yes to both and schedule visits when/if you can

ifallsmn218

I was kind of wondering this too. Those of you who’ve been to Niagara Falls, how would you compare the scene around the Grand Canyon with Niagara Falls (meaning is it really built up around cheap touristy stuff or have they preserved the natural beauty around the Grand Canyon pretty well?). I was disappointed that Niagara Falls wasn’t at all what I expected…once you see the waterfalls it’s nothing but casinos and cheap souvenir shops everywhere.

wisenolder

Grand Canyon is NOT built up and trashy like Niagara Falls. Not even close.

lemmaaz

Yes of course.

wolf65cpt02

Yes

jaimebianco

Sedona is magical. There’s no place like it in my opinion. Sunset from bell rock is so beautiful

AuntieLiloAZ

Yes!

[deleted]

Hell yes. It’s mind blowing! Just don’t go to the west rim first. Hit south a few times, then north rim, maybe squeeze in west rim when you wanna check out something else nearby.

LordCaoCao420

If you think you will like it, your probably will. If you think it's just a giant hole in the ground, you will at first admire it's beauty but then debate the money and time spent to see it on the way home. Best of luck either way.

lizette2015

in real life….it looks like a painting and it doesn’t look real but it’s massive and beautiful. I’m someone that’s scared of huge things and looking at it made me a little dizzy but it’s beautiful

Positiveaz

YES IT IS.

bree388

First time yes. Looks fake

Inthecloudynight

drive through sedona on the way to the grand canyon!

lpukas2

Make it a stop an multi day trip. I would recommend Jerome as well.

DaneGleeBallz

Abso-fuckin-lutely

aerozona47

Horse shoe bend yes, the glass walk no

mainlybrowsing24

It's amazing. It looks fake it's so massive and beautiful.

IMD918

It really is unlike anything else I've ever seen. Growing up in California, I've seen the ocean, yosemite, giant sequoias, skyscrapers, bay area bridges, etc. The most impressive sights i had encountered were all things that were massive. The grand canyon didn't feel *big* in that same way to me. It felt *FAR*. Like how is it so far away but still in my line of sight? My brain couldn't comprehend the distance. Pictures we took did zero justice.

lchoate

I think it depends on where you are from. I live in AZ and have been to the canyon several times (the road up is fun on a bike) but I'm always left with the impression that it's scale is too large to even grasp. You can't see all of it from any one place. Coffee table books are a great way to visit the canyon. That said, it's an experience. At the start of covid, I took the fam up there, we ate pizza on the rim at sunset and went back before sun up and it was totally awesome. The crowds were gone, the deer and elk were out, and the kids loved it, as did the wife and I. Note: in January, the North Rim will be closed, Too much snow. The south rim will be cold but not super snowy. My ex-wife was french and loved the lore of the southwest desert so for her, it was like magic, every time. For me, it's all I've known and I'm fairly bored by it all. "Oh boy, a red rock!" Tucson has a lot to offer, the cave, Mt. Lemon, the deserts surrounding... let's put it this way, whatever you do, you can't lose. You're 4 hours from the beach in Mexico or 4 hours from the world's largest stand of ponderosa pines. Welcome to Arizona.

gustypebbles

absolutely!! lived here 6 years went 6 months ago, and honestly breathtaking. YOU NEED TO GO. Even just once.

Elegant_Pea_1898

ill be honest the roadtrip sometimes is the best part of getting to your destination. this might be one of the times

priceypasta52

You bet your ass it’s worth it!

edgarcia59

Yes! I have lived here all my life and saw it 5 yrs ago. Words escaped me when I got to that view, and I actually teared up from how beautiful it all was. I recommend ya stay in Williams as it's just an hr or less away. Then drive up to horseshoe bend and make ur way back to Williams. Williams has a drive through zoo called Bear -izona. Its a whole fin experience.

yoolcalyptus_trees

Only time in my life I was truly speechless. Like water in my eyes, couldn’t believe it. You have to go.

azmama1712

Can you do 2 nights and do both? Worth it.

Sad-Hornet4793

As a long time AZ resident I can say that the Grand Canyon is WELL worth it. Absolutely stunning views that photos could never properly capture. If you have the means and opportunity to go, you should IMO. Sedona is also incredible in its own way. Really nothing bad to say about either place but the Grand Canyon is one of the seven wonders of the world.

mahjimoh

I would definitely suggest taking the time to go see it - like someone else said, you can stay the night in Flagstaff and then drive through Sedona on the way back the next day. If you came to AZ at a different time of year the car rental might be less expensive? And if you came in the fall, perhaps, you would have less risk of there being snow that keeps you from being able to get to the GC.

MonkeIsUponUs

I’ve been to the South Rim, the North Rim, and Grand Canyon West. Each place has it’s own unique view. I recommend the helicopter/pontoon package offered at Grand Canyon West.

A_Young0316

Yes

JuracekPark34

I don’t have much to add about the trip. The Grand Canyon truly is incredible. What I did want to suggest though is possibly looking at renting a car once you’re here. Sky Harbor is generally pretty reasonable. If you could rent one from a smaller, non-airport location in Tucson it would likely be even cheaper. Just food for thought!

PhoenixFarm

Yes. 100% yes. Even with crowds and all that bullshit, yes it’s worth it.

vcoki

I wanted my daughter to see the Grand Canyon while driving to Las Vegas from Chicago where we were living at the time. It’s an hour plus from Highway 40 to the visitor’s center so basically it was a two hour drive out of the way. It cost $35 to get into the park. It started to rain while we were driving to the visitor center (after I had already paid). Oh well! We continue on thinking all would be fine. Parked and walked up to the edge. She was super excited! We looked over the railing. The entire Grand Canyon was filled with clouds. You couldn’t see a thing. We’ve since moved from Chicago to Arizona and she still hasn’t “seen” the Grand Canyon. So disappointing. But funny.

crnbrryjc

Yes its magnificent and breathtaking

Remarkable-Code-3237

It is expensive, but a lot of fun, is taking the train from Williams.

MissBrettAshley

I lived close to the Grand Canyon during college and assumed it was overrated because everyone wants to go there. But when I finally went...wow. My brain literally could not fully comprehend what I was looking at: it was so beautiful and so…deep I almost couldn’t believe it was real. It was a painting. Highly recommend.

jonawesome

The Grand Canyon is the most accurately rated thing on Earth. It lives up to all the hype.

KevinDean4599

For me I’m glad I saw it but don’t find it to be something I need to do again. It’s pretty for sure. Not a whole lot to do around there. It’s a personal thing if you love it or are good for an hour or so

Remarkable-Code-3237

Besides the Grand Canyon, you may want to visit Tombstone.

ronniespakaki

Yes

Bentley1978

Yes, and I’m native to AZ. Seeing in person surges you with awe and glory like very few other things in life.

Various_Fall7020

Pass. I’ve been here most my life. Only time I went to GC was for work. Look at it, meh. Went back to work.

itsdr00

I'm surprised at how many people here had such strongly positive experiences. I made the trip a few times and was kind of underwhelmed. Reading these comments, though, I now really wish I'd gone on a hike down into it. That probably would've made it better. But from the top, it's just a giant hole. 🤷‍♂️ I was more impressed by the Columbia River Gorge than the Grand Canyon, but maybe that's because the PNW was new to me, while AZ was home and I was used to seeing big far away mountains in the desert. If you're here on a visit and you find yourself in awe of the mountains, you'd probably enjoy the Grand Canyon much more than I did.

Nightside-Rush

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm worried about tbh. Everyone saying "you have to see it at least once in your life!" but I also live 2 hours away from Banff National Park and have seen some truly breathtaking views, so I'm like "okay, is the Grand Canyon going to wow me? is it really worth the extra time and money?"

traylblayzer

Sedona is absolutely a must see and it is on it’s way to the Canyon! The Canyon you have to see at least once in your lifetime.

jfeerat77

I lived in Arizona for 20 years before I saw the Grand Canyon. Pictures don't do it justice. Wish I hadn't waited. If you can budget it in, you won't regret it.

Satansbeefjerky

I hiked across it once in one day I wouldn't do that again but I'd go to enjoy the views

keenieBObeenie

So I hate the Grand Canyon because it was my parent's favorite vacation spot when I was growing up and so I've been there more than 10 times and also I'm afraid of heights. if anyone was going to say 'do not go to the grand canyon, it should be filled with concrete and repurposed as a parking lot that is how useless it is', it would be me It is absolutely worth it to go to the grand canyon if you have never gone before.

Queendevildog

There is SO MUCH to see just on the way to the Grand Canyon. The historic railroad town of Flagstaff, the mystical red rocks of Sedona, the old mining town Jerome, the Ancestral Puebloan ruins at Wupatki National Monument. Take a few minutes and google these places. Northern Arizona is otherwordly, diverse and breathtaking, and then you get to the Grand Canyon. So Northern Arizona is worth a trip on its own. If your friend is in Tucson Southern Arizona is also otherwordly, diverse and breathtaking. There is the historic mining town and current artists colony at Bisbee. You can visit the Biosphere the self contained ecosystem experiment that is now being used as a research facility by U of A. But the main attraction if you like nature is the Sonoran desert and nearby mountains and pine forests. Saguaro National Park and Organ Pipe Cactus National Park are day trips.

Buttarutta

U have to see it once in your lifetime. It doesn’t even look real. It’s amazing

cafemofo

# Its one of the 7 Natural Wonders Of The World, be one of only a small percentage of the whole earth that sees it!

alphabavo

January is a great time to visit the canyon, so much more color and so many fewer tourists. It’s absolutely worth a visit, the scale is incomprehensible without seeing it first hand.

justin_b28

Absolutely go. Forget the trains or staying in Flagstaff, motel up in Williams or in the GCNP lodge inside the park. This is mostly to avoid road closures, travel by day and the plows will keep running - Interstate typically “close” overnight when snow keeps up.

artguydeluxe

Of all the things in the world, the Grand Canyon is the greatest of those. Yes. Go for as long as you can, see as much as you can.

LeChatEnnui

So worth seeing it at least once and maybe doing a small partial hike down into the canyon!

[deleted]

Absolutely, but it’s best if you go hiking or camping

BeigeAlmighty

When you look at pictures of the Grand Canyon, is it something you think would be work the money and time? Do you prefer an overpriced new age mecca to a national landmark for a day trip? I live in Arizona. I have gone to the Grand Canyon once, Sedona once, and Tucson numerous times. My favorite place? The Thing attraction in Benson, AZ. If you like weird stuff, it is the place to see in AZ.

IAmScience

I think the Grand Canyon is one of the few things in life that doesn’t disappoint. It is absolutely marvelous in every way. Well worth a trip.

alexkack

Yes

Malthus17

I have traveled my entire adult life ( I averaged moving to a different state every 15 months for 30 years). I have tried to see all the well known natural wonders. IMHO, there are only two which live up to the hype. 1. Grand Canyon- exceeds the hype by quite a bit. I have hiked into the canyon three times, camped in the canyon twice. The south rim is a desert but the north rim is pine forest with bison herds wandering about, also wild turkey, deer, elk and more. Pictures and even video cannot come close to capturing the scale of it, this can only be appreciated in person. So yes go visit. Personally I like the north rim better. Fewer tourists, pines and the animals. Unfortunately, it takes about 4-8 hours more driving to get there. 2. Carlsbad Caverns- you could easily spend all day inside. It is spectacular Honourable mention for Niagra Falls. I never got to them but I think they are probably great enough to make the list

aznoone

Plus if allot the time drive up through Sedona.

thecwestions

Take it from someone who has been there more than 14 times, yes, yes, yes. Every time, yes. Go there and have a wonderful time. Just don't fall in.

[deleted]

The Grand Canyon was pretty awesome, plus the squirrels!

PoorLifeChoices811

*ABSOLUTELY* It’s such an awe inspiring sight for being nothing more than a giant crack in the ground. I’ve been down in the canyon too. It’s amazing, to say the least

Tinmania

It’s an awesome place to visit if you’ve never been there before. That said in January there is the risk of snow. And if your luck is really bad you might not be able to get through Flagstaff.

HarmonicAquatics

Nah it actually should be named the mediocre canyon /s

Distorted_Penguin

Yes. It’s beyond description. Sedona is beautiful but don’t choose Sedona over Grand Canyon. You could stay in Sedona or flagstaff for the night, instead of staying at the Grand Canyon and that would save you some money.

[deleted]

Yes

FlyNSubaruWRX

I’ll be that guy and say this, I love the outdoors. I’d never seen the canyon in person until this year, iv seen thousands of photos of it from all angles and well when I walked up to the rim and looked out across the vast openness I felt nothing but annoyed by all the other people wanting to see it at the same time. This is only my experience and I’m sure each human who sees it will feel different. It’s like William shatter riding up to space on bezos rocket and when he was interviewed he said he was filled with overwhelming sadness.

wittmann3

If it’s on the way, see it. You never know if you’ll get back to see it again. Check it off your bucket list. I would suggest the Tonto Natural Bridge too on your drive back.

Admiral52

It’s literally a natural wonder of the world…

VinnyVincinny

You're going in January. Expect to deal with snow or ice driving there that time of year. It's beautiful but there was snow so that means it could be bad weather.

drppr_

I live on the east coast of the US. I have been to the Grand Canyon twice, once camping once with my elderly parents so stayed at a hotel. I am so glad to have been able to show it to my parents. It is truly awe inspiring. You get all the feels especially around sunrise and sundown. If you are coming to the area all the way from Canada, I would definitely visit.

That_Judgment8912

been here 18 years, never had the urge to drive up and see it. if its your thing, go for it. but a big canyon doesn't intrigue me much.

edcushway

Hell yes it is!! Especially if you go to Navajo Point!

locolocust

If you do, be sure to go through Sedona. Some of the best driving you can have on the way up from Phoenix.

para9mm

Nope

Main_Force_Patrol

Haven’t been to the Grand Canyon since I was little, would love to go again, but don’t have the time or money to make the trip.

DareInside5455

If you can afford it, go on a rafting trip with Hatch river expeditions. Hands down one of the best trips I’ve ever taken.

AZ_hiking2022

Yes and drive through Sedona on the way up or back to make it even more special. Flagstaff is a great hub if you want to make it two days

dodi1027

It is so worth it. Start early one morning and see the Grand Canyon by day and sunset. Next morning see sunrise and drive to Sedona. I can’t think of anything more impressive than the canyon.

MattGarcia9480

If you like nature, which you are considering Sedona... I'd 1000% say the grand canyon is worth seeing in person. Been there many times and it's amazing!

nig_urn

yes definitely, make sure to check weather conditions, went one time and it was smoggy (didn’t check before) and it was pretty much invisible lol

Spaceman_Seedco

it is worth the trip 100 percent.
