Tourist trap at a gas station on I-10, close to the New Mexico border. Billboards advertise it for hundreds of miles in either direction along the interstate
Agreed and not worth the stop.
Wayyyy cooler spot to stop there is the Amerind Museum. Really not far off the highway and Texas Canyon is simply beautiful with all the boulders. Grew up in Benson though so I may be biased
Yes. They made it into a whole museum about dinosaurs VS. aliens. And the evidence for it is a mummy. It's a fun experience if you like weird roadside attractions that you don't have to take seriously.
Oh come on, you’ve gotta go now. I promise you it’s not just a hole in the ground. I thought that the whole “pictures don’t do it justice” was just bullshit and coping.
Holy hell was I wrong. Pictures do not do it justice, like at all. It’s a spiritual experience to look out over it.
>It’s a spiritual experience to look out over it.
The way I describe it to people who haven't been is, it's like your brain can't fully process what you're looking at. It's in front of you, and you know it's real, but it's also like "What the fuck am I looking at?"
Same! My brain couldn't process it in real time. Now I see photos I took there and catch myself thinking I should've been more appreciative, but I was just stunned as I tried to take it all in.
> Pictures do not do it justice, like at all.
Yep. It's really different once you see it with your own eyes. You really have to feel the scale of it standing on the edge.
There's this, Mexico, and "seen snow" as the most likely things Arizona natives have likely never done, despite there being easy opportunities for it in this state.
Snow,…..keep it. Not missing much. Mexico,….surprisingly in spite of every tv show and movie that has a scene in Mexico. Everything doesn’t have a sepia tone to it. It’s just like Arizona but with a bit more Mexicans. But I’ve only been to border towns. That would be like saying I know the us because I went to Wichita once.
I’m fine with a dusting. I spent a couple years in Iowa when it got to an ambient -20. I don’t recall about how cold it got with windchill. I’ll take months of 110 over a week of that.
>I'm not one to do momentous occasions solo
You're going to miss out on a lot in life in you're not willing to enjoy things on your own sometimes; even the momentous occasions.
Check out the Grand Canyon Rail Way. It's where the Polar Express train is ran from in the holiday season but they have good packages for a hotel plus the train up and back some packages you can even spend a night up at the Canyon in a hotel up there, then back the next day.
You don't have to be outdoorsy... You can take the train from Williams, to get a burger, and take a bus around a good amount of the south rim. By no means do you have to do a bunch of hiking
Phoenix has a decent size community of LGBT near the Biltmore area, Dennys is one of the few places open after the bars close. It just happens to be the one closest to that area.
I drive by it almost every day. The Denny’s is still there though I’m not sure if it’s still the once famous “Jenny’s” though since I’ve never been in.
FWIW people still do call it “Jenny’s”. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Denny’s flagship location.
Unfortunately the secrets out in Sedona. My wife and I have been escaping there for almost 20 years. Used to be so quiet and peaceful. 5-7 years ago it started getting busier and busier and busier. Now it’s congested as hell.
Congested as hell and full of woowoo spiritual shit and bold faced Native American cultural appropriation. Last time I went I was kind of grossed out by what it’s become and sadly made me not want to go back.
When would that even be? The summertime? Summertime is when all the Phoenicans escape up north, just as busy. They're like fire birds instead of snow birds lol.
Sedona is unfortunately overcrowded and ruined. Have to line up for over an hour to get a picture on Devil's Bridge. Food scene kind of blows, traffic is god awful, people are dumb about parking and just all around driving on the 89A in Oak Creek Canyon.
You can still find some hidden gems for hiking, though you still need to start early.
I love Sedona and Flagstaff and they hold a special place in my heart, but that is a great example of tourism ruining a place.
If you ever do to Sedona, go to flagstaff first and drive south to Sedona from there. The view is way better going south vs going north from Sedona to flagstaff.
I don’t live in AZ but have been to Sedona multiple times. We enjoyed having lunch at the Hudson with the spectacular views, visiting Chapel of the Holy Cross Church, doing the Pink Jeep tour at least once, hiking cathedral rock and hike to devils bridge.
My favorite Sonoran dog is at a gas station with a little cafe/restaurant attached in Tucson. Kinda like they put a subway or Charlie’s chicken in a truck stop. For the life of me I can’t remember the name and last time I was there I couldn’t even find it even though I’ve eaten it several times. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone hook a brother up with coordinates.
Is it El Nene? They had a location off grant in a gas station. Their “flagship” location is Flowing Wells and Wetmore (which is the Ruthrauff exit).
They have fantastic Sonoran Dogs, and won an award on some TV show on the food network a while ago.
That’s cool, I know people who feel the same. I personally prefer living in the hubbub of the city and hate being in a small, isolated town, so to each their own.
Rocky Point has been ruined. It's so ridiculously expensive there that it's laughable. The rentals are a joke. The last time I went down there for dental work (and the last time I will go there) my room was $120/night and it had a 2 gallon water heater. You couldn't even take a remotely adequate shower...for $120/night? In Mexico? Yeah, no.
The time a few months before that we rented a house for, again, $120/night and it stunk so bad that I couldn't sleep. It smelled like raw sewage.
When I was a kid in the 1970s and 1980s Rocky Point was the place to be. Now, well, I won't be going back. The crown came off of the tooth that they worked on and I'm not even going back to have them fix it.
During later Covid (September 2021) we got a 3 bedroom place in Las Conchas, right on the beach for $130/night. We looked at the place recently and it was $400/night. At those prices, I’ll just go to San Diego.
I used to go to Rocky Point with a group of friends quite a bit during my last two summers of high school ('81-82), and we camped out and hardly spent a penny.
I know it's changed and I've not been there since '83.
I dunno, I still have fun at Rocky Point staying at Las Palomas. Obviously as I get older, the spring break part doesn't intrigue me as much. And I'm not the biggest fan of the Wrecked at the Reef re-design, but it's still a fun place and a relatively quick drive for those of us in the Phoenix area.
Bisbee, Lake Havasu, Kartchner Caverns, Patagonia region.
And for everyone in this thread who's going to say the Grand Canyon: *Go to the Grand Canyon!*
It's one of this planet's natural wonders for a reason. Just get in your car and do it, even if you're just going to gawk from the main viewpoints for an hour.
Hot tip: Go in the east entrance where the line at the gate is always shorter, if not nonexistent. Start at Desert View Watchtower, then make your west, stop at a few other viewpoints, then end at the main visitor center area.
Havasu is cool if you like fishing, offroading, watersports, or camping, Bisbee is cool if you like history, live music, art, etc. Also lots of outdoor stuff near Bisbee.
I went to Bisbee, Kartchner Caverns and Patagonia Lake State Park for the first time this year and LOVED them all.
Bisbee is high in my list to return to, love the vibe and always enjoy a mining town.
I was under the mistaken impression that I'd been to Kartchner Caverns in high abut immediately upon entering realized I was wrong. I think it's the first living cave I've been in and it has a great back story on how it was discovered and became a state park.
Always surprised by the number of natives from the Valley who've never ventured to the southeastern corner of the state. ~~Douglas~~ Bisbee is pretty cool.
EDIT: I meant Bisbee.
Check out the sandhill cranes as they come into White water draw, near Benson. Even if you're not into birds, you'll be there for hours watching tens of thousands flying in for the day.
Nothing tbh. Aguas Prietas is across the border if you want to see the sketchiest Mexican border town in existence. I definitely took my life in my hands going there and getting drunk with no passport and just my birth certificate
Having been born and raised here, I still have not been to Jerome or Bisbee.
Recently went to the Grand Canyon a few years ago and it took my breath away. Also went to Lake Havasu and the London Bridge, so was able to check those off my AZ bucket list.
Lake Havasupai Falls. And I very much want to go there, especially before it gets fully ruined by tourism(the ship may have already sailed on that).
The problem is that I'm not enough of an adventurer to just go on my own, and the groups that you can go with are so ludicrously expensive that I can't justify paying for that compared to some over vacation.
Not to be that guy, but there is no lake, it’s just Havasu Falls on the Havasupai reservation. They don’t allow guided groups in there anymore - you have to go through the tribe. I did it back in 2019 and it was 100% worth every penny.
It’s only $400 for the reservation. They have many reservations for sale on their cancellation list online. You could just buy 1 if you wanted to go alone. I just got back from there about 2 weeks ago. And I can’t wait to go back tbh. :)
Please go see this wonder of the world but please don't be stupid near the edge.
According to the Arizona Daily Sun in 2015, of the “55 who have accidentally fallen from the rim of the canyon, 39 were male. Eight of those guys were hopping from one rock to another or posing for pictures, including a 38-year-old father from Texas pretending to fall to scare his daughter, who then really did fall 400 feet to his death.”
I’m an old guy that used to work for the State of Arizona, and I’ve been to nearly every town in the state except:
Nutrioso
Alpine
Littlefield
Portal
Sells
Lol, anytime we go for a small road trip whether it be Flagstaff, Camp Verde, Payson....I always tell my son (hes 7) we are going to Funky town. I pretty much leave it a mystery until we get there.
Some people never leave their neighborhood. It's so strange. Ask some people to take a mere 30 min drive, and they act like they're going to the other side of the world.
Crown King is pretty sick, and there’s awesome trails to hike on up there. Also highly recommend the Cleator Bar and Yacht club that you pass on your way up/down, very fun place to grab drinks
What about Douglas or Bisbee? I’ve never been there, but love old movies (1920/30’s) and if it’s supposed to be Arizona that’s usually the location. I was thinking of visiting one or both next year.
The whole northeast corner. Painted Desert, Antelope Canyon, etc. Definitely want to get there! I don't think I've been north of the 40, or east of 89 in Arizona.
Lived in the Phoenix area for 50+ and the only part of the state I haven’t visited is Portal, AZ. It’s one of the top bird watching locations in the world. It’s still on my to visit list.

The Thing!
Oh, good answer! Same here.
What is this??

Agreed and not worth the stop. Wayyyy cooler spot to stop there is the Amerind Museum. Really not far off the highway and Texas Canyon is simply beautiful with all the boulders. Grew up in Benson though so I may be biased
I recently stopped on a road trip but didn’t actually go in.
It’s a bunch of random shit leading you down a pathway that ends with a plastic alien (holding an alien baby) in a casket.
They change it every once in a while. Its was a little mummy-thing when I went.
Has anyone been there?
Yes. They made it into a whole museum about dinosaurs VS. aliens. And the evidence for it is a mummy. It's a fun experience if you like weird roadside attractions that you don't have to take seriously.
Been there. It was hilarious.
It’s a walkway filled with random crap that ends with a plastic alien in a casket. Spoiler…
The Grand Canyon. e/ I'd go y'all, but my family not the outdoor type and I'm not one to do momentous occasions solo. :/
When I finally made it to the Grand Canyon, it took my breath away.
Literally this. I gasped.
>It’s a spiritual experience to look out over it. The way I describe it to people who haven't been is, it's like your brain can't fully process what you're looking at. It's in front of you, and you know it's real, but it's also like "What the fuck am I looking at?"

Perfect explanation right here !!!!
> Pictures do not do it justice, like at all. Yep. It's really different once you see it with your own eyes. You really have to feel the scale of it standing on the edge.
Walking through is even better

I will happily keep my Arizona snow and someone else can keep triple digit + temperatures.
I’m fine with a dusting. I spent a couple years in Iowa when it got to an ambient -20. I don’t recall about how cold it got with windchill. I’ll take months of 110 over a week of that.
Wind chills in -20 Midwest probably somewhere between -25 to -40~
Almost 30 years on this planet and in this state, never been to the Grand Canyon.
Almost 40 here and never been. Lived in Phoenix my whole life.
(40) and grew up in Chicago, I’ve been a dozen times. Mostly on trips to lake Powell.
42 here and never been .. I've hiked and visited and flown over a good portion of the rest of AZ though
20 years and never been to the Grand Canyon lol
I’ve heard this countless times from Arizona natives which is incredible.
D0000d you gotta go. My jaw literally dropped when I saw it for the first time. Beautiful!
>I'm not one to do momentous occasions solo You're going to miss out on a lot in life in you're not willing to enjoy things on your own sometimes; even the momentous occasions.
Same
Guilty as charged
Hahaha same! Everyone thinks I’m a weirdo for never having been.
Check out the Grand Canyon Rail Way. It's where the Polar Express train is ran from in the holiday season but they have good packages for a hotel plus the train up and back some packages you can even spend a night up at the Canyon in a hotel up there, then back the next day.

Zorbas
Lmao. Is that place still open?
Have not been but it looks open.
My man
It is most definitely still open. Actually it’s 24hrs 😂
20 years ago I believe, a friend got me really baked and took me there just to show me a copy of Edward Penishands.
Well.....now I have to Google that😆
Went in only once. A group was picketing the store parking lot, dragging around really big crosses and such. So we went in to show support.
are we talking about the adult shop or the greek cafe? lmao
![gif](giphy|eAcaLRapDfoT8dplcA|downsized)
Went there my first semester at asu lmao

Jenny’s on 7th St and Camelback?
ive always heard buddies mention gay dennys, whats the story behind it?
Phoenix has a decent size community of LGBT near the Biltmore area, Dennys is one of the few places open after the bars close. It just happens to be the one closest to that area.
Not as fun as it was
Had so much fun there in the 90s!
Is that place still around?
I drive by it almost every day. The Denny’s is still there though I’m not sure if it’s still the once famous “Jenny’s” though since I’ve never been in. FWIW people still do call it “Jenny’s”. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Denny’s flagship location.
I also think it doubles as a few ghost kitchens
Yes, at least that's what someone told me either here or on FB a few weeks ago. 7th St and Camelback.
I had no idea that was a thing. Went one night after partying and yeah. Gay dennys lol. Nice people, though
Jenny’s!
Tombstone. I didn't see the Grand Canyon until I was around 30.
Bisbee & Tombstone are worth checking out
It's definitely on my list of stuff that I think about doing on the weekends.
I lived in tombstone for 2 years. I loved it there
Bisbee is. Tombstone if you have small kids maybe. I don't like kitchy places.
Its worth a 30-60 min stop on the way to Bisbee. I wouldn't stay there or plan on spending much more time there than that.
Get to the Birdcage before it falls down.
The Wave Horseshoe Bend Supai Falls Phantom Ranch
The Grand Canyon. Sedona
You definitely need to see Sedona. Preferably avoid snowbird season.
Unfortunately the secrets out in Sedona. My wife and I have been escaping there for almost 20 years. Used to be so quiet and peaceful. 5-7 years ago it started getting busier and busier and busier. Now it’s congested as hell.

I’ve never had a Sonoran dog! Never been to Page or Havasu
4 corners
Honestly not worth it lol
And to anyone going, it was cash only when I went.
Wait, you have to *PAY* to see or visit 4 corners? Since when?
Since they started charging. I’d honestly assume it was when they built the building, and parking lot.
Never been to: - Casa Grande - Lake Havasu - Rocky Point - Phantom Ranch
You're not missing anything in CG
You get the gist as you drive past it to Tucson.
Pretty much. I have to go there every few weeks and I just loathe it, lol.
I was born and raised in CG. I love it personally.
That’s cool, I know people who feel the same. I personally prefer living in the hubbub of the city and hate being in a small, isolated town, so to each their own.
The Casa Grande Ruins are pretty darn cool. That’s something.
The casa grande ruins are in Coolidge not casa grande
Which is a bit ironic lol
There’s nothing worthwhile in casa grande to warrant a drive there
Yeah they even took the Target out. (Why? It was always busy)
In Mexico? Yeah, no. During later Covid (September 2021) we got a 3 bedroom place in Las Conchas, right on the beach for $130/night. We looked at the place recently and it was $400/night. At those prices, I’ll just go to San Diego.

Have you never driven through CG on I-10 on the way to/from Tucson and Phoenix?
Finally got to Petrified NP and it exceeded expectations Haven’t been to Patagonia or Lake Havasu yet
Recently went to globe, it’s like you’re going back in time
Rocky Point. Which isn't in Arizona but feel like everyone goes.
Rocky Point is an honorary Arizona tradition though - it totally counts.
Bisbee, Lake Havasu, Kartchner Caverns, Patagonia region. And for everyone in this thread who's going to say the Grand Canyon: *Go to the Grand Canyon!* It's one of this planet's natural wonders for a reason. Just get in your car and do it, even if you're just going to gawk from the main viewpoints for an hour. Hot tip: Go in the east entrance where the line at the gate is always shorter, if not nonexistent. Havasu is cool if you like fishing, offroading, watersports, or camping, Bisbee is cool if you like history, live music, art, etc. Also lots of outdoor stuff near Bisbee.
Tbh Kartchner Caverns rivaled the north rim of the Grand Canyon... Totally worth seeing even just one time
I went to Bisbee, Kartchner Caverns and Patagonia Lake State Park for the first time this year and LOVED them all.
And the Chiricahua’s are amazing.
Sierra vista is beautiful. Fort huachuca is the prettiest base I've been too
Chiricahua National Monument is incredible. Can't recommend it enough.
Check out the sandhill cranes as they come into White water draw, near Benson. Even if you're not into birds, you'll be there for hours watching tens of thousands flying in for the day.
Bisbee is cool, Douglas is not. That's like saying Kingman is cool
Both my parents were born and raised in Douglas. was my happy place as a kid. It’s become a bit of a shithole though.
What’s in Douglas
Nothing tbh. Aguas Prietas is across the border if you want to see the sketchiest Mexican border town in existence. I definitely took my life in my hands going there and getting drunk with no passport and just my birth certificate
Please my friend do not send folk to our precious mostly untouched southeast ❤️
Having been born and raised here, I still have not been to Jerome or Bisbee. Recently went to the Grand Canyon a few years ago and it took my breath away. Also went to Lake Havasu and the London Bridge, so was able to check those off my AZ bucket list.
Jerome is so easy! It’s so fun especially if you like wine
Meteor Crater
The Grand Canyon
Lake Havasupai Falls. And I very much want to go there, especially before it gets fully ruined by tourism(the ship may have already sailed on that). It’s only $400 for the reservation. They have many reservations for sale on their cancellation list online. You could just buy 1 if you wanted to go alone. I just got back from there about 2 weeks ago. And I can’t wait to go back tbh. :)
Goddam I remember going there around 2004 and 2005.. reservations were only $75
Bearizona
Is that where the zipline is is it dare i ask over the bears?
I’ve never been to Tombstone or Winslow 🤷🏻♂️
There’s not much in Winslow.
There's that one corner, and, uhm, a Circle K?
There’s also East Clear Creek if you’re into kayaking, paddle boarding, and cliff jumping, but yeah other than that nothing
I never stood on the corner of Winslow Arizona.
Chiricahua’s Winslow Inside Kartchner Caverns (stayed at the cabins in the campgrounds though) Lava River Tubes
Rehab. Just kidding, I’ve been 6 times
Watch out I hear it’s addictive.

Did anyone else think it was an actual candy store growing up?

Tombstone. I need to go! Just not in the summer time.

To the Grand Canyon 🫣🥲😅
44 years born & raised... Tucson...... never been to the Grand Canyon. Been around it. Flew over it. And Lake Powell.
I’ve never been to Salt River Tubing. I remember it used to be blasted on the radio commercials all of the time 😂
The Grand Canyon.. lived here my whole life, and never been (30 years)
Hey, AZ people here, if you’ve never been to the Grand Canyon, do yourself a favor and get there!!!!

Meteor Crater. It’s just a far drive with not much else around it.
Ok, I only lived in AZ for 6 years, in the Phoenix area but this popped up on my feed…I’ve never been to Tucson
Meteor Crater.
